"The Detour Lake Mine is located in northeastern, Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane. The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 60,000 mtpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill. This paper will highlight the impact of a pre-detox thickener on the cyanide consumption in a gold leach/CIP circuit. While the pre-detox thickener was built with the intention to reduce the cyanide consumption, the opposite effect was observed when the thickener was put temporarily offline. It will show how the re-circulation of a dilute stream of cyanide into the grinding circuit, increases the overall slurry temperature and by the same effect, increases the dissolved copper concentration in the leaching circuit which subsequently increases the cyanide consumption.INTRODUCTION The processing plant is using a conventional gravity, cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp processing facility currently operating at approximately 60,000 mtpd. The comminution process is based on two parallel SABC lines, each fed from an individual reclaim tunnel. Cyclone overflow from the two ball mill circuits is directed to the pre-leach thickener. The thickener underflow is distributed to two (4) parallel leach trains of 5 tanks each, each leach train providing 29 hours of leaching retention time. After leaching, the gold in solution is recovered in a carrousel CIP circuit consisting of two (2) parallel leach trains. Tails from each CIP circuit are combined and sent to a pre-detox thickener to recover as much cyanide solution as is economically practical before being diluted and fed to a cyanide destruction system. The detoxified tailings are sent to the Tailing Management Area (TMA) for settling and retention. The excess water from the TMA is reclaimed and recycled back to the processing plant. The pre-detox thickener is designed to thicken the leach tails slurry to 64% solids with the overflow being recycled to the grinding circuit. It is estimated that the pre-detox thickener will recover 60% of the cyanide in the CIP discharge solution. It is also designed to reduce the SO2 consumption by diluting the thickener U/F to 50% solid using the tailing pond reclaim water which has very little cyanide content."

Gold recovery from refractory ores can be very difficult and complicated depending on the causes of the refractoriness. Typically, a fine wind and/or the oxidation of the gold-bearing sulfide minerals are required to liberate gold from the host rock matrix. Mineral separation techniques, particularly surface¬wettability based separation (i.e., flotation) and magnetic separation, can be used to pre-concentrate the gold and sulfide minerals, or to remove mineral species that are harmful either to the oxidation of the gold-bearing sulfides or to the cyanidation following the oxidation. In this paper, several processes are described, including oil-agglomeration flotation recovery of fine-grained gold and sulfide, reverse flotation of carbonate minerals prior to pressure or bio oxidation, reverse flotation of elemental sulfur after pressure or bio oxidation but prior to cyanide leaching, and magnetic concentration of gold-bearing iron oxides. The integration of these techniques with gold hydrometallurgical processes may make the economic recovery of gold from an otherwise uneconomic refractory ore possible.

A continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based constitutive model has been developed to describe elastic, plastic and damage behavior of rock during drilling. In addition to inelastic deformations, this model incorporates rock anisotropies like toughness anisotropy due to the bedding planes orientation that is a common observation in soft Shales. The pressure sensitive inelastic deformation of porous rocks together with their damage mechanisms are studied for drained and undrained conditions. Fracture mechanics of microcrack and micro-void nucleation and their coalescence are incorporated into the formulation of the CDM models to accurately capture different rock failure modes. The performance of the developed elastoplastic and CDM models are compared with the available single cutter test data of a specific shale play and then the models are introduced into a commercial finite element package through user-defined subroutines. A workflow to derive the required model parameters is presented through inverse modelling of the single cutter test data. The developed CDM model outperforms the traditional discrete element and fracture mechanics approaches by removing stress singularities at the fracture tips and simulation of progressive fractures like formation of the cuttings ribbon without any essential need for remeshing. This model would provide a robust tool for modeling bit performance and rate of penetration using conventional elements of FEA with a reliable results and a computational cost less than similar computational techniques like discrete element methods.

The kinetics of the oxidation of uranium(IV) by oxygen gas in aqueous systems is dependent on acid concentration, oxygen partial pressure, and temperature. In order to better understand the relationship between these variables and the speed of oxidation, a series of experiments have been conducted where each parameter has been varied in turn. Data were collected continuously using UVVis spectroscopy, allowing for a detailed examination of the reaction rate over the course of each experiment. The data fit an overall apparent rate law that is 1.5order in uranium(IV), -2order in H+, first order in oxygen, and unaffected by uranium(VI). This relationship does not appear to hold for solutions with <0.2 mol/L initial acid, where a different kinetic mechanism appears to be dominant.

"IntroductionAlthough iron formations were recognized in western New Brunswick about 1820, commercial production was not achieved until 1848. The Jacksonville deposits near Wood stock were developed first, and ore was treated at a blast furnace constructed 5 km to the southeast on the Saint John River. Several charcoal burners were also constructed. Pig iron was produced sporadically until 1884, when operations were finally suspended. There was little further interest in the area until 1953, when Stratmat Ltd. initiated an ambitious exploration program. At the same time, the company carried out research on an electric-reduction process to produce metallic iron and ferromanganese. The technical feasibility of this process (Udy process) was confirmed, however the high energy costs were prohibitive and work ceased in 1957. Some metallurgical research was carried out by Mandate Refining Ltd. about 1970 and more recently by the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council.The Years Prior to 1848New Brunswick became a separate province in 1784, shortly after the influx of a large number of Loyalists from the United States. Man y of these people sett led along the Saint John River, including the area of excellent farmland near the present town of Woodstock.There were indication s that some of these earl y settlers recognized iron formations in the vicinity of Woodstock about 1820, however the nature of the deposits was not known until 836 when Dr. C.T. Jackson, a geologist commissioned by the Stat e of Maine, investigated the mineral potential of the area. Jackson (1836) described the ""ore"" as compact red hematite yielding 44 per cent pure metallic iron, and suggested that sizable tonnages may be present. It was about this time that an extensive limonite deposit was found in north-central Maine, near Mt. Katahdin. Other iron deposits were found in the Nictaux area of Nova Scotia, and a few years later at Londonderry."

Adaptive processing is often related to the mineral composition of the mining block currently processed. The portions of waste, ore and secondary product minerals considered are always positive and typically sum to 100% (i.e. a composition). A typical solution to predict block averages of spatially dependent quantities would be block kriging. However, kriging is based on spatial correlations and it has been repeatedly shown that correlations of compositional data are spurious and blurred by the constant sum constraint. Aitchison (1982) proposed a general solution for compositional problems, based on transforming the compositional data to a set of logarithms of ratios of components, and analysing the transformed scores. The transform is chosen to be invertible to ensure that no information is lost in the process. This methodology avoids spurious correlation problems and ensures coherence between results obtained with different subcompositions. Pawlowsky-Glahn and Olea (2004) adapted the approach for point-support geostatistics, allowing the prediction of point compositions from spatially neighbouring data, without the artefacts induced by standard multivariate cokriging. Unfortunately upscaling the results of this approach with block cokriging is not straightforward, because of the nonlinearity of logratio transforms. Furthermore, we have to consider those nonlinearities created by the dependence on the block composition of extraction efficiency and processing costs of the possible processing choices. This paper proposes a solution for predicting the conditional expectations of the benefit of processing the block with each processing choice using geostatistical simulations of the local values of the composition and the resulting block integrals. The computation for a large number of blocks can be done efficiently using Cholesky decomposition. The approach also allows the calculation of prediction errors for expected compositions and expected benefit at almost no additional computational cost. Such compositional approach is necessary, for example when processing choices depend on proportions of certain minerals after other components have been removed; or if processing alters the composition in a multiplicative way, by partially removing a portion of some components.

Ammoniacal solutions are an effective lixiviant for the oxidative dissolution of some mineral sulphides. A detailed study of the anodic dissolution of chalcopyrite in ammonium sulphate-ammonium hydroxide solutions has been carried out using cyclic voltammetry, chrono-amperometry and rest potential measurements. The role of the copper(II)/copper(I) redox couple in the oxidation process has been evaluated. Rest potentials have been found not to be affected by oxygen but to increase with an increase in initial copper(II) concentration. Pseudo-steady-state anodic current densities measured in the absence of copper(II) ions at the rest potentials obtained in the presence of copper(II) ions increase with increasing concentration of copper(II) ions, confirming the positive effect of copper(II) ions on the rate of dissolution of the mineral. Cyclic voltametric and chrono-amperometric data show that in the absence of initial copper(II) ions, the rate of dissolution in the presence of dissolved oxygen is significantly lower. These results confirm that the effective oxidant for the mineral under the conditions of the study is copper(II) and not dissolved oxygen. Coulometric measurements have been used to establish the stoichiometry of the anodic reaction at different potentials.

This paper describes the behaviour of iron and the methods used for iron control in the nickel matte leaching process. OMG Harjavalta Nickel Oy processes approximately 10 000 t/y of iron, which enters the process with the nickel matte raw material. Iron dissolves and precipitates in several different stages of the leaching process. Compounds like ferric hydroxide, parabutlerite, goethite, hematite and jarosite are found. Iron removal is done within the leaching process, and this means that the dissolution of nickel sets the limiting conditions for iron precipitation. A leach residue consisting mainly of the iron precipitates is neutralized and stacked in the waste pond. When iron is precipitated from concentrated nickel sulphate solution, some nickel is lost by co-precipitation. Recent studies have shown that Ni-Fe ratios less than 1%, attributed to co-precipitation, can be obtained with jarosite precipitates, compared to 2-3% ratios typically found with hematite precipitates. Iron can be precipitated as jarosite under the optimal nickel leaching conditions by adding ammonium sulphate to the feed slurry of the autoclave.

"Construction of mountain roads at north westerly Saudi Arabia is a difficult task in rugged terrains, where the rock masses are steep slopes, and full of geomorphological constraints.Werka descent lies at the north west region of Saudi Arabia. The Werka descent, constructed four years ago harmed due to rainstorm. The rock masses are metabasalt and metaryolite tuff rocks. The road is eight m-wide, surround by unsupported sharp manmade slope cuts, reaches up to 15 to 40 m height on both sides. Failures took place at both sides of the road, and blocked it. The road of almost 2 km long subjected to all modes of slope instability such as rockfalls, manmade slope failures and debris flows in the absence of the remedial measures. The very precipitous 40 m-high rock slope-cut along the road has no benches, backed by a natural slope of almost 80 m height. Both types of slopes suffer from rockfalls and slope failure’s incidents, frequently took place mainly in rainy seasons. The steep manmade rock slope cut is less than 1 m close to the road, with no ditches, form a potentially source area for rockfall’s hazards.Intensive geotechnical study includes utilization of the RMR and GSI rock masses classifications indicates that the rocks are fair to poor quality. The DIPS, RocFall, Swedge, RocTopple, RocPlane computer program, in addition to GIS and DEM image utilized to perform modeling and deterministic analysis, in order to suggest the mitigation measures for the natural and manmade slope cuts and rockfalls. The seismic coefficients of 0.1 to 0.4 taken into consideration in modeling processes. Input parameters to model the rockfalls and slope failure’s characteristics were studied such as GSI, block size; seeder points, locations of fallen blocks; slope angle, restitution coefficients, and slope roughness. The programs modeled the proposed location, height and energy of the rockfall barriers, collectors, and rock bolts. Two manmade slope cuts studied and modeled utilizing the integrated techniques were to eliminate the risk of slope failures and rockfalls through the construction of remedial measures, this is the study objectives."

"The Cordilleran tin belt extends from the Seward Peninsula in westernmost Alaska to Mexico. Throughout the Canadian section, tin occurrences are mainly confined to a belt along the northeastern fringe of the Western Cordilleran sub-region; the boundary of this sub-region with the Eastern Cordilleran sub-region is most simply defined as the practical eastern limit of granitic and metamorphic rocks. The stratified rocks underlying this restricted belt are mainly late Precambrian and early Paleozoic miogeosynclinal sedimentary rocks, which are more or less metamorphosed but otherwise are generally equivalent to the less severely deformed rocks underlying the Eastern Cordilleran sub-region. They contrast with Late Paleozoic - Mesozoic eugeosynclinal volcanic-sedimentary assemblages farther west, but the granitic intrusions throughout are mainly of Late Mesozoic age. Thus, narrowly defined, the tin belt largely coincides with a lead-zinc-silver metallogenic province, whereas copper deposits characterize the eugeosynclinal regions to the west. In addition to the tin occurrences, which include the Sullivan lead-zinc-silver mine, Canada's only significant producer, the belt contains all the beryllium, most of the tungsten and many Iithophile-type molybdenum occurrences. Several types of occurrences of each metal are represented. Lithium occurrences in the Canadian Cordillera are notably rare, and these few are insignificant."

"Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. Le SES est bien défini sur la carte aéromagnétique en couleurs du gradient vertical par des zonages concentriques, où quatre linéaments structuraux ont été reconnus: 035°-55°, 320°-300°, est-ouest, et nord-sud. Les principales zones minéralisées spatialement associées au stock sont généralement situées soit près des linéaments magnétiques est-ouest, soit le long de ceux-ci.Le SES semble s’être mis en place le long d’une structure majeure, développée tardivement dans l’évolution de la Sous-province abitibienne, comme les autres plutons alcalins felsiques. Porous copper and porous copper based alloys with controllable pore structure have been manufactured successfully by sintering evaporation process. This process consisted of mixing copper or copper based alloys with NaCl powders, hot pressing and final high-temperature sintering to evaporate the filler material of NaCl powders. NaCl was eliminated completely during vacuum sintering, and strong metallurgical bonding in the walls was achieved. The pores’ structural parameter (pore size, shape, and direction) and porosity can be controlled effectively. These porous copper and porous copper based alloys with controllable pore structure have great potential in many fields. Including heat dissipating materials, heat absorbing materials, chemical catalyst carriers, electromagnetic shielding materials, filtering materials, damping materials, silencing materials, battery electrode materials. INTRODUCTION The development of porous materials began in the 1960s. The research of activated carbon with high specific surface area made porous materials enter the stage of material research (Belyakov et al., 2008; Ferey et al., 2008). With the rapid development of science and technology, porous materials play an important role in material research, and gradually become an indispensable part of the material research field (Wu et al., 2012). The research of porous materials has gradually extended to metal, ceramics, plastics and glass and other fields. It has been successfully applied in many fields, such as functional materials, industrial production, aviation, medical materials, biochemistry and electronics, which fully shows that porous materials have considerable development prospects. Porous silicon, plastic porous materials and glass porous materials are the most widely used in the field of non-metallic porous materials (Capelle et al., 2012). Compared with non-metallic porous materials, metal porous materials have developed rapidly in the late 1980s and become new materials with good mechanical properties and excellent physical properties. Porous metal materials have many advantages, such as large specific surface, small specific gravity, good silencing effect, high stiffness, high electromagnetic shielding performance, good shock absorption performance, etc (Li et al., 1999; Ferey et al., 2008). Among its many applications, metal porous materials can be used as both functional materials and structural materials. In some cases, metal porous materials have dual functions and structures. It is a multi-purpose engineering material with excellent performance. At present, porous copper, porous aluminium and porous nickel are the most concerned materials (Chen et al., 2002; Yang et al., 2017; Liu et al., 2018). The preparation methods of porous copper and copper-based alloys mainly include self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS), capsule-free hot isostatic pressing (CF-HIP), spark plasma sintering (SPS) (Kvanin et al., 2008; Takahashi et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2014). However, these methods can not accurately control pore structure parameters (including pore size, shape, orientation, distribution, etc.). In porous materials, pore structure plays an important role in the overall performance of materials. In order to control pore structure parameters accurately and optimize material performance, it is necessary to explore and develop new preparation technology. In this paper, the sintering evaporation process (SEP) was introduced for the preparation of porous copper and copper-based alloys. The core process of the preparation method is hot pressing and evaporative desalination. Hot pressing can make the pore orientation consistent. Evaporative desalination can ensure the complete removal of NaCl in the form of vapor in a short time, thus eliminating the corrosion of residual NaCl on the matrix metal (Gong et al., 2011).

"Echo Bay&apos;s Lupin Operation has produced more than 2.15 million ounces of gold since start-up in 1982. The mining method used to the£ present time has been longhole open stoping using trackless equipment. Because direct measurement of the open stopes has not been possible until recently determining the exact quantity of unplanned dilution in previously mined stopes has not been possible. Estimates of dilution hove been mode using comparisons between production tons and grades against ore reserve tons and grades.This paper discusses tracking of grade and tonnage measurements from reserve estimation through production. Comparisons between estimated and actual tons and grade are presented~ along with a brief description of methods used at the Lupin operation to control dilution."

Abstract Some Canadian geologists believe chat, in the Grenville sub-province of Eastern Canada, there is no granitic intrusion older than the anorthosite. The writers are among those who hold the contrary view. They suggest a new means to distinguish between rocks belonging to intrusions respectively older (Laurentian) or younger (Pine Hill) than the anorthosite. This new method is based on microscopical observations which demonstrate that the Pine Hill intrusives contain a large amount of exsolution perthite, whereas the Laurentian intrusives are completely devoid of exsolution perthite. Where perthite is present in Laurentian rocks, it is the result of lacer hydrothermal replacement. Introduction The present paper is the result of a systematic study of some acidic intrusive rocks in the Grenville sub-province. These rocks underlie large areas of the Canadian shield in the Province of Quebec, mostly along the southern border of the shield.

Gold/iron oxide catalysts have been prepared and their catalytic performance evaluated for low temperature CO oxidation. The method and temperature used to dry the sample has a significant effect on their catalytic activity. Analysis by TEM revealed the catalysts contained Au particles, although catalysts with high and low activity did not always differ in their microstructure as evidenced by TEM. Catalysts were characterised using XPS and the difference between the Au(4d) and C(1s) binding energies measured; in general the greater the difference, the higher the catalytic activity of the material.

Abstract- The Ashele Cu-Zn deposit is a recently discovered volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit in Xinjiang, China, hosted by Lower to Middle Devonian submarine bimodal volcanic rocks. The primary ores of this polygenetic deposit are represented by massive syn-depositional pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, and were formed by submarine exhalation. Hydrothermal alteration consists of strong sericitization, chloritization, silicification, and carbonatization of the metavolcanic rocks beneath the massive orebodies. Depletion of Na2O is an obvious chemical change in the hydrothermal halo. Geological and geochemical evidence suggest that the Ashele Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposit was formed by submarine exhalation related to bimodal volcanic rocks, trapped in a rifting basin, then deformed by shearing, and thermally metamorphosed by the intrusion of dacitic porphyry. Sulfur and lead isotopic studies indicate that metals such as copper and zinc may have originated from spilites, but that volatile components, especially sulfur, were derived directly from submarine volcanic magmas.
