"The Donalda gold deposit is located in the southern part of the Noranda camp, approximately 2 /em east of the Horne deposit. Combined past production and current reserves total over 1.5 Mt grading 6.9 grams of gold per tonne.The deposit consists of two main veins which are both narrow but persistent structures. The No 1 Vein, hosting about 80% of the gold ore, consists of an EW-striking banded quartz vein dipping on average 25° to the south. Although variable in thickness, it averages lessthan1 metre. TheNo2 Vein, located 300 m below the No 1 Vein, is similar to it except that it dips 50° south. Gold occurs mostly as fine native gold disseminated in quartz, with 2-3% pyrite and trace amounts of various sulphides and tellurides. The wall rocks are only weakly altered and mineralized with pyrite, hematite and sericite.Structurally, the Donalda deposit is centered on the Horne Creek fault (HCF) where the HCF is intersected by the ENE-trending DonaldaandCentralfaults.NorthoftheHCF,theNo1Veinishosted by the Quemont Rhyolite, whereas south of the HCF the vein is hosted by magnetic basalts and diorites of the Wilco Andesite Formation. The No 1 Vein extends across the HCF with only minor displacement, whereas the No 2 Vein has not yet been traced south of the HCF.A preliminary structural analysis of the mine shows that the HCF, which strikes 275° and dips 70° north in the mine area, has a reverse movement a lid that the flat dipping No 1 Vein is a tension vein. Both probably developed in response to the same stress conditions. Although the absolute age of the Donalda veins is not known, structural relationships indicate that they formed during the latest movements of the HCF, but prior to the intrusion of the Proterozoic D' Eldona Diabase. The occurrence along the HCF of gold-rich synvolcanic massive sulphides and much younger vein-type gold deposits (such as Donalda) indicates that the HCF was a very long-lived, deep-seated (?)structure which has controlled the circulation of gold-rich fluids over a long period of time."

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. The gemological properties that allow natural emeralds and blue sapphires to be distinguished from other gemstones are summarized in this paper. A variety of synthetic and laboratory-treated emeralds and blue sapphires are also encountered in the jewelry industry today. Gemologists distinguish these latter materials from their natural counterparts based primarily upon features seen with magnification, such as inclusions and/or growth zoning. In some cases, however, these observations and standard gem-testing methods are insufficient, and the use of non-destructive analytical methods, such as optical spectroscopy and chemical analysis, are required for positive identification. The commercial value of synthetic and treated gems are much less, and can be insignificant in comparison to that of an important untreated natural gemstone. Identification of synthetic and treated gem material is essential to maintaining integrity in the jewelry industry. Loss of consumer confidence in the gemstones sold at the jewelry counter could have a negative impact on the exploration and mining of natural emerald and blue sapphire.

As an occupational culture, mining comes with its own set of rules, agendas and values. Yet mines often also operate in the traditional territories of indigenous communities, with whom specific agreements are negotiated that commit to respect culture, economy and environment. Mines in these locations employ extremely diverse workforces whose value systems often come into conflict in on-the-job relationships. Adaptation of individual worker attitudes and industrial operating culture thus both need to occur if there is to be the negotiation of a workable relationship. This paper will discuss ways that NWT diamond mines have adapted to their workforce, to ensure that rights and cultures of their diverse workforce can be respected. Historically, the concept of culture has been dealt with solely through the forum of ?cross-cultural? workshops. Gibson presents a model of a new type of ?cultural-engagement? workshop based on the top ten cross-cultural conflicts that actually arise at a remote mine-site. This model helps managers, team leaders, and workers to tackle in-mine conflicts that arise based on differing value systems of aboriginal and non-aboriginal workers and management. In addition, Gibson suggests that the concept of culture must be more rigorously applied throughout the mine structure and not discussed only in the forum of the cross-cultural workshop.

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.

"The mining of coal in thick and inclined seams is difficult, and there are only a few countries in the world that are really interested in the problems associated with their exploitation. In France a considerable amount of investment has been made in the mechanization of systems appropriate for such conditions.For seams inclined up to 50 degrees, of normal thickness, a new system was introduced in 1967. It consists of a longwall advancing to the rise with walking props, a shearer and hydraulic backfill. During the first two years the panel productivity was an average of 25 TN/MS, and they foresee the possibility of reaching an average of 30 TN/MS.A system for thick beds, both horizontal and inclined, is in p•rocess of being mechanized. In 1969 they started with a method consisting of a longwall in a footwall slice, or sub-level drifts with walking props, and caving and drawing up to a height of 20 m of coal. Recent experiments with a shearer have produced panel productivities between 9 and 11 TN /MS, and there is hope that with experience an average of 16 TN/MS will be obtained.In 1964 a method was initiated for beds inclined from 60 to 90 degrees, based on a mechanical cutter designed by the collieries in Lorraine. An overhand slice of 4.2 m in height is taken with a drum cutter mounted on the end of a boom. Hydraulic fill is placed at the completion of a slice. The face productivity, which has been from 13-20 TN /MS, can be perhaps increased to an average of 22 TN/MS. For those companies with important reserves in inclined and thick seams, these French systems may be worth the trouble of examining in some detail."

"The 2010/11 Canterbury earthquakes triggered many mass movements in the Port Hills including rockfalls, rock and debris avalanches, slides and slumps and associated cliff-top cracking. The most abundant mass movements with the highest risk to people and buildings were rockfalls and rock/debris avalanches. Over 100 residential homes were impacted by landslides, leading to the evacuation of several hundred residents.Volumes of rock leaving several of the larger cliffs during the earthquake sequence were determined from terrestrial laser scan change models. There were no seismically instrumented cliff sites and there was some distance between the cliffs and nearest strong-motion sites. Therefore, we synthesised free-field rock-outcrop seismograms by employing a stochastic approach controlled by source models and regional parameters derived using spectral inversion of the extensive strong motion data set. Relationships between volumes leaving cliffs during the earthquakes and site peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and Arias intensity were compared for different sites. Multiple linear regression was used to analyse the variables that best predict the volumes of debris that fell from the slopes during the main earthquakes. The best correlation between the volume of debris falling per square metre of slope face and the seismic forcing parameters was for vertical PGV. The results from the multiple linear regression incorporating slope height, inclination, PGV horizontal and PGV vertical, improved the statistical relationship.Field data and results from the 2D seismic site response assessment indicate that the following factors affect dynamic performance of the modelled cliffs: 1) cliff geology—mainly material modulus, shear strength and shear wave velocity; 2) slope geometry—ridge-scale versus site-scale effects; and 3) the temporal aspects of the earthquake shaking (i.e., single acceleration peaks of large amplitude versus multiple peaks of smaller amplitude). Model results show that amplification of shaking does not increase linearly with increasing height, but instead reflects changes in the cliff geology where material strength, modulus and shear-wave velocity contrasts lead to acceleration contrasts.These factors show that the use of well documented case histories provide the basis for more certainty in seismic landslide assessments compared to those that are only empirically based."

"An unparalleled growth in the Canadian coal industry in 1970 coincided with increasing awareness by Canadians of their environment and their geography with its accompanying transportation factors. R and D on coal moved with greater emphasis toward solving problems in these areas as well as continuing with strong interest in coal preparation, carbonization, combustion, ""weathering'', spontaneous ignition, storage, exploration and geology. Long-range ""basic"" research was not forgotten in that work continued on coal-based carbons, coal chemistry and agrobiological uses for coal. This paper reviews the status of these many areas of coal research at the beginning of the seventies and takes note of some of the more significant legislation and projects brought to the author's attention. No attempt is made to itemize or to describe in detail all the worthwhile projects, many of which are reported elsewhere."

"Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a unique class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu- Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. They are known to exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive HSE profile. Historically, for most reagents used in flotation, practical methods of chemical usage have preceded detailed scientific understanding of how they work; this applies also to dithiophosphinates. Recently, however, the research community has shown significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamentals of interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions of dithiophosphinates and dithiophosphate analogues with various minerals and metals is also made throughout. We believe that such a critical analysis/overview will be invaluable in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important set of compounds, which in turn may provide a basis for the design of studies that can advance understanding of their flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. Recently, there have been numerous fundamental and application studies designed to develop a better understanding of its interaction with sulfide minerals and precious metals. The paper presents a study on the oxidation of polymetallic gold ore by oxygen in an autoclave. It presents optimum parameters of autoclave leaching of sulphide refractory ore in self-generated sulphuric acid solutions aiming to get products with favourable technological characteristics from which precious and other useful metals can be recovered. A high partial oxygen pressure (1.5 MPa to 2 MPa), high leaching temperature (190°C to 200°C), pulp density 80 g/L to 240 g/L, ore fraction size 76 µm and leaching time up to 4 hours yield good results in rich ores. The full extent of copper and zinc conversion as well as a high extent of iron conversion has been achieved, while lead, gold and silver and a minor part of iron remain as a solid residue among gangue minerals.

This paper describes two micro-beam analytical techniques(Dynamic SIMS and TOF-SIMS) which have become an intricate part of a comprehensive analytical approach for precious metal (PM) ore characterization and process mineralogy or deportment studies. The value of the D-SIMS technique is its capacity for accurate analysis in the sub ppm range along with the ability to produce high resolution elemental maps. The TOF-SIMS is significant for speciating and quantifying preg-robbed Au on the surface of carbonaceous material. In combination with traditional assays, the two techniques can provide invaluable information regarding the distribution of PMs within an ore along with providing insight into potential sources of PM loss in processing or where losses have occurred in process streams.

"Mount Polley is an alkalic porphyry copper-gold deposit of Lower Jurassic age within the Quesnel terrane in south-central British Columbia. The silica-saturated Mount Polley intmsive complex is assumed to be coeval with volcanic rocks of similar composition in the Nicola Group in which it was emplaced. Other intmsions and some of the volcanic rocks in the Mount Polley area are silicaundersaturated and contain feldspathoids.The Mount Polley deposit is characterized by multiple intrusions that vary from diorite to crowded plagioclase porphyry to monzonite. Intmsion breccias are associated with some of the intmsive phases. Abundant hydrothermal breccias occur on the margins and above plagioclase porphyry intmsions. These breccias provide the main host for mineralization and are associated with the highest concentrations of copper and gold. The breccias are subdivided into four distinct types based on the dominant hydrothermal mineral in the matrix. Actinolite breccia is developed in an elongate zone within the core of the Central zone and grades laterally and vertically into biotite breccia to the southeast. Magnetite breccia is irregularly distributed and is relatively sparse throughout the deposit and albite breccia is dominant in the West zone. Pervasive and vein-related alteration correlates with the breccia types. The core of the hydrothermal system at Mount Polley is subdivided into three zones: actinolite, biotite and K-feldspar-albite. The margins of the core zone are overprinted by a discontinuous zone of calc-silicate minerals. This intermediate zone passes outward into propylitic alteration. Mineralization is most prominent within hydrothermal breccias and is generally present as disseminations, blebs within the matrix and abundant veins. Mineralization is associated with a chalcopyrite-magnetite-bornite assemblage in the core of the deposit passing out into magnetite-pyrite-chalcopyrite. Relatively constant copper to gold ratios suggest that both metals were precipitated under similar conditions.Hydrothermal breccias are genetically related to the emplacement of the crowded plagioclase porphyry melt. Crystallization of the melt was probably accompanied by volatile/aqueous exsolution, forming a water saturated carapace. Decompression of the chamber in response to magma withdrawal, fracture propagation and possible fault movement allowed hydrothermal brecciation to occur at the apex and margins of the intmsion. Alteration and mineralization appears to have been controlled by fluids migrating away from the plagioclase porphyry."

Start-up of a Hall-Heroult cell is a delicate task that can affect pot performance and pot life. Modem practices for high amperage cells involve preheating the lining before the molten electrolyte is poured in. Different preheating methods and heat-up schedules are used throughout the industry, and the optimum between a short start-up and damage minimization to the cell is elusive. Direct electrical coke-bed preheating is one of the most common techniques. This practice typically results in a non-uniform surface temperature distribution and can generate detrimental thermal gradients in the cathode blocks. Numerical modeling is an invaluable tool to study this complex problem and can help improve the preheating procedures. The modeling of the mechanical response of the lining is critical to detect risks of cathode block cracking or the development of gaps where liquids could leak into. Taking into account the baking of ramming paste, the quasi-brittle nature of carbon and the contact interfaces between different materials are examples of key elements to consider. A finite element slice model of a cell was built and simulations of different electrical preheating scenarios were performed using the inhouse code FESh++ to demonstrate what can be learned through thermo-chemomechanical modeling. The potential industrial application of the model is discussed.

"After a short introduction to the history of the semi-conductor theory, the paper describes the principles of electron and hole flow in the semiconducting materials, the operation of the PN junction, and the rectification process in multi-layer devices (diodes and SCR's). The various methods of purification and zone-refining of the silicon are illustrated prior to the discussion on the most commonly used junction-forming processes (alloying, diffusing, etc.). Modern device fabrication and packaging operations are illustrated. Factory testing, evaluation, electrical parameters and guaranteed rating characteristics are listed. It is explained in this paper how the various device parameters affect the electrical performance of the finished unit and how the finished unit characteristics (turn-on, turn-off time, etc.) will influence the equipment rating. In concluding, some typical items of equipment are highlighted, and the applications of these semiconductor rectifiers in the chemical, mining, pulp and paper, and steel industries, etc., are dealt with."

"A field trial was conducted at an underground gold mine to evaluate diesel fuel derived from soybean oil (soy-methyl-esters or “biodiesel”) as an alternative to commercial, low-sulphur, number 2 diesel fuel (D2). A 2.7 m3, 18-ton load-haul-dump (LHD) unit, powered by a naturally aspirated, indirect injection (pre-chamber), 100 kW diesel engine was used as the test vehicle. The LHD was equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst. The LHD operated satisfactorily on the biodiesel fuel. Operators observed a slight decrease in power and an absence of black smoke.Diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations were monitored for a six-week period while the LHD was operated with either the biodiesel fuel or the D2 fuel. DPM concentrations were measured in the mining section’s clean air intake, exhaust and on the LHD. Reduction in DPM emissions was determined from the measured difference in DPM concentrations between the clean air intake and the exhaust. The biodiesel fuel reduced energyspecific DPM emissions approximately 75%, from 3.6 ± 1.8 g/kW-hr to 0.86 ± 0.27 g/kWhr. Time-weighted average DPM exposure, measured near the LHD operator, was reduced from 0.67 ± 0.13 mg/sm3 to 0.28 ± 0.12 mg/sm3, or approximately 58%, when the biodiesel fuel was used. IntroductionDiesel exhaust consists of noxious gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent attention has focussed on the potential carcinogenicity of DPM and the potential health impact on miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a “potential occupational carcinogen”, and that reductions in workplace exposure would reduce cancer risks (NIOSH, 1988). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared that “diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans” (IARC, 1989)."

The last three decades have seen significant mining development in northern regions of Canada, where the freeze and thaw cycle of permafrost and the corresponding surface subsidence and heave represent a significant challenge to the design and maintenance of infrastructures. Identifying areas at risk is of great assistance to reduce the impact of this issue. Over the past ten years, Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has been widely used to monitor ground surface deformation. With this technique, changes in phase between two SAR acquisitions are used to detect centimeter to millimeter surface displacements over a large area and with high spatial resolution. InSAR can be used as a tool to assist the siting and design of new infrastructure as well as highlighting the risk to existing structures in areas of unstable terrain. This paper presents the results of a project carried out by Effigis, which made use of SAR interferometry in the context of monitoring terrain and infrastructure stability in a northern mining environment that is affected by permafrost seasonal and long term changes. TerraSAR-X images acquired during two periods, August to November 2012 and March to October 2013, were used to measure the deformations and/or movement of ground surface, infrastructure and stockpiles caused by seasonal changes in permafrost extent in and around a mining site located in Nunavik, Quebec. The results showed that spatial and temporal distributions of surface displacements are in accordance with scientific and terrain knowledge. Some displacements were observed in loose soil areas while, as expected, none were detected in bedrock and rock outcrop areas. The areas most affected by active layer changes showed surface subsidence in the thaw settlement period. This study confirms that SAR interferometry has a great potential for operational applications related to risks induced by surface deformation in mining environments. It shows that this technique can be used to produce reliable maps of surface movement and monitor the vertical displacement of important infrastructure.

After pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, bio(hydro)metallurgy is the latest development in the ongoing search for efficient and economic metal winning processes. In addition to bioleaching, other biotechnology-based applications are getting more and more accepted. In this paper a number of proven and commercial processes will be presented that can be applied for nickel and cobalt recovery and refining. These processes are based on the ability of biomass to convert the redox state of sulphur compounds under ambient conditions. They can be applied to recover sulphate from effluents or SOx from off gases and convert it to H2S or dissolved sulphide that can be reused in production or effluent treatment. Not only does this minimize the costs on resources but it also reduces waste production and improves the quality of discharges even to the point where reuse becomes feasible.

When roasting started at Giant Yellowknife Mines in 1949, it became apparent that, to prevent air and water pollution in the surrounding district, it would be necessary to collect the arsenic that was contained in the exit gases of the roaster. The arsenic collection problem was finally solved by the installation of both electrostatic and baghouse collectors. It was realized that a considerable quantity of gold-bearing dust was leaving the roaster with the exit gases. When the collection problem was solved, it was possible to measure this loss. The loss proved to be considerable and it became evident that a substantial quantity of gold could be recovered. Research programs on dust treatment began in 1958, and by May, 1960, the treatment process which is currently being followed was started in the plant. At present, the two electrostatic preci11itators, Operated at temperatures above 600°F, collect the gold-bearing dust.

Several reviews of mineral project performance in the past 35 years indicate a pattern of occasional, but recurrent, mining project failures due to shortcomings in geological information and estimation, mineral processing and metallurgical testing, feasibility study objectives and requirements, and project start-up methods. A commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement methods and to obtaining “ENOUGH DATA, OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY” is essential. Recent international and Canadian proposals for mineral resource and ore reserve definitions have taken a nonprescriptive stance that will undermine the formulation of requirements, guidelines and industry standards for efficient deposit delineation and estimation, and for the determination of project feasibility. To help reduce problems, every feasibility study supporting a mine development and production decision should be based on objectives and methods adequate to reach completion targets similar to the bankers’, as a good business target for a profitable project. In a resource/reserve system, the use of reserve should be restricted to a project that meets required technical, economic and legal feasibility requirements for successful project implementation, and the definitions of these categories should provide explicit limits. Current shortcomings will limit the ability of the Qualified Person to provide “adequate professional practice,” fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to his employer or client and provide adequate information to the investing public. We must take advantage of present opportunities for Setting New Standards for the new Millennium.

Peat/ands distribution in Canada is widely spread thoughout the country and corresponds to a wide spectrum of wetland habitats which overlay peat deposits. The development and the evolution ofpeat/ands and peat deposits are closely linked together, since the vegetal remains of the peat deposits originate from the peatland habitats, and the peatland habitats constitute a response to many factors, including the properties of the substrate, which are the peat deposits. Peat/ands are defined as waterlogged terrains where the production of plant materials usually exceeds the rate of decomposition. The underlying peat deposits consists of organic residues associated to peatland vegetation, more or less decomposed, built up and kept under anaerobic conditions. Peat/ands evolution and distribution are determined primarily by climatic factors, but also by the geomorphology and edaphic conditions. All of these create particular hydrodynamical environments which will vary according to different regional settings, and sequentially to an evolutive time frame.
