The precipitation of Fe(III) to form ferrihydrite in the presence of arsenic is the United States EPA's Best Demonstrated Available Technology for treating arsenic-containing hydrometallurgical solutions and waste streams. This technology has been widely adopted throughout the world and developments have been well reviewed. The adsorption and long-term stability of ferrihydrite can be improved by co-precipitating Fe(III) and Al(III) together to form an aluminum-modified ferrihydrite. Arsenate adsorption into ferrihydrite and modified ferrihydrite as a function of pH, Fe/As or (Al+Fe)/As mole ratio, and the initial As(V) concentration is presented and compared. The results of long-term aging of both adsorbents at 70°C for over a year are also summarized.

High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of nickel laterites has received considerable attention in recent years. High paymetals extraction, good selectivity, and advances in pressure hydrometallurgical technology are some of the reasons for this interest. Falconbridge Limited (Sudbury. Ontario) investigated the HPAL process using both fresh water and seawater for ore processing. The use of seawater resulted in a chloride concentration of 7.8 g/L in the autoclave feed. A test program was developed to study the effect of process water and leach temperature on the leaching behaviour of different ore compositions from the Koniambo deposit in New Caledonia. The work showed that salinity has a major effect on autoclave chemistry. This paper explores the results.

THE plains of southern Alberta constitute one of the classic areas of geological investigation in Canada, for it was here in 1874, and in 1881 to 1883, that George Mercer Dawson (1, 2, 3) made the pioneer observations that are basic to all subsequent work on the interior plains of Canada. Dawson's work was extended eastward by R. G. McConnell ( 4) and northward by J. B. Tyrrell( 5) , but it remained. for D. B. Dowling to re-examine Dawson's Bow and Belly River Area and to make certain necessary revisions in the stratigraphical system of his predecessor. In 1917, Dowling published his memoir, The Southern Plains of Alberta( 6) , which remained for over ten years the last word on the stratigraphy and structure of the area described. It is generally conceded that Dowling's work made known the existence of a great artesian basin beneath the semi-arid plains of southeastern Alberta. In addition, his structural studies greatly stimulated the search for natural gas and petroleum. The most recent general publications on this area by the Geological Survey are based on the field work of M. Y. Williams, E. J. Whittaker, W. S. Dyer, and P. S. Warren, between the years 1923 and 1926. Their results were embodied in the Calgary Sheet (7) and the memoir, Geology of Southern Alberta and Southwestern Saskatchewan (8). By this time, the number of geologists working in Alberta in the development of the petroleum and natural gas industries had become large, and in 1931 the Alberta Association of Petroleum Geologist~ offered the Donaldson Bogart Dowling Memorial Symposium on Stratigraphy of Southern Alberta( 9) , a most valuable series of papers descriptive both of the ,surface stratigraphy and that observed in the well records.

The production of ferronickel and matte from nickel laterite ores is dominated by the Rotary Kiln, Electric Furnace (RKEF) process. Over time, major improvements have been made to kiln operation. In particular, kilns are now required to perform substantial amounts of reduction of the metallic oxides, thereby reducing the load on the electric furnace and substituting less expensive fossil fuel for electrical energy. To the basic refractory lined cylinder have been added: internal features such as dams and lifters, aimed at changing residence times in different sections of the kiln and enhancing gas/solids interaction, on-board fans to introduce tertiary air and on-board scoop mechanisms to allow reductant coal additions to be made at advantageous locations along the kiln. Many of these advances in design have been made on a trial and error basis and by 'borrowing' technology from related kiln processes, supplemented by proprietary modeling to various levels of sophistication. This paper presents a conceptual review of modeling components for the development of a computational model for granular material flow, combustion and heat and mass transfer in a nickel laterite kiln. These components include: granular material flow and segregation models for the simulation of bed motion, heat transfer models that simulate heat transfer by turbulent diffusion and radiation and the distribution of this thermal energy within the bed, and fluid flow models for the prediction of combustion aerodynamics.

The steel industry of the entire OECD is briefly described before proceeding to a more detailed discussion of various aspects of the steel industries of European OECD members, emphasizing practices and conditions that differ from those in North America. "A significant area of Outotec’s business involves fluidized bed roasting. With several decades of experience, more than 300 reference plants and strong R&D capabilities, the company provides several industries with optimum processing solutions. Applications include oxidation and sulfation of sulfides found in copper, pyrite and zinc concentrates. Gold production and de-arsenifying roasting are also within this scope. This paper describes the latest furnace developments and includes novel trends. Moreover, hot and wet gas cleaning systems are examined focusing on unit operations related to the removal of components such as dust, SO2 for sulfuric acid production, fumes, halides, Hg, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and metals.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, when defining roasting processes, it can be stated that the respective primary pyrometallurgical reaction is exothermic, of gas-solid nature and relates to a value solid product. These processes are a key focus within Outotec’s scope and include: (i) dead roasting (ii) sulfating roasting (iii) partial de-arsenifying roasting and (iv) two-stage, de-arsenifying roasting.Dead roasting involves the oxidation of a given sulfide, thus allowing for a subsequent leaching process, and has been applied to producing ZnO. Dead roasting of pyrite has also been extensively utilized with a primary goal of producing sulfuric acid. In contrast, sulfating roasting involves converting a sulfide to its sulfate, enabling a selective sulfation of components, such as Cu or Co, and their separation from ferrous components during leaching (produced sulfates are soluble). Partial roasting involves partially oxidating the metal sulfide to its oxide with the simultaneous production of gaseous As4O6, which is handled during gas cleaning. The solid product, containing hardly any As, is rich in S and can be fed to a respective smelter (e.g. in the case of Cu). Alternatively, if the production of oxide is required, a dead roasting step is added after the partial roasting step, with the overall process considered as two-stage roasting."

All resources are controlled and kept to the minimum. The various phases are properly planned and strategically determined. The method must be fully understood and implemented with positive data and continuous feedback to obtain the best results. This paper covers the various aspects of the Critical Path Method and mentions some of its applications in the mining and metallurgical fields. "The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals.The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. It is shown here that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. However, the theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are unlikely to experience growth in crystal particle size through heterogeneous nucleation and are more likely to grow through aggregation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process."

"This paper was' prepared to emphasize the part that coal washing tables can play in the development of many of the reserves of coking coals in Western Canada_ It covers a brief history of the development of the coal washing table through the present third-generation unit, which suspends from overhead steel beams and is driven by a counter-rotating gear mechanism. The design and operation of this unique table are covered in detail.An analysis of actual operating data is included, with explicit statistical breakdowns of the table products. The data used were actually produced by operating coal companies, and also produced by the United States Bureau of Mines while gathering data for a research investigation. Table feed capacity is discussed, as well as performance criteria and the parameters of relative table performance. Several typical table flowsheets are described, emphasizing the specific reasons for their use. The paper covers the past and present value of the table to the United States coal industry, and makes mention of the newest addition to the family of suspended, multiple-deck, counter-rotating, gear-driven, coal washing tables, the CONCENCO ""88"" Deister table."

AGNICO-EAGLE started sinking the Penna Shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1,800 tonnes per day from a 2,240 metre deep shaft. Exploration success lead to the installation of a hoisting plant capable of extracting 4,500 tonnes of ore and 1,800 tonnes of waste per day from a depth of 2,210 metres. The introduction of a new rope selection factor, permitting a safety factor of 4.0, represented the breakthrough required for a cost-effective project. This paper describes the process taken to introduce the new rope selection factor and its impact on the original plant.

THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission's development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

Newmont USA Limited owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006 (House, 2010). Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix had no process option to treat transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore would be mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a runof- mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/ electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the eight years of successes and challenges with developing the copper L-SX/EW plant and achieving commercial production of copper cathode.

"The Red-Chris porphyry Cu-Au deposit is located between Ealue and Kluea lakes, southeast of the village of Iskut on the Stewart Cassiar highway in northwestern British Columbia. It was explored by Texasgulf Inc., in a joint venture with Great Plains Development Company of Canada, Ltd. and Silver Standard Mines Ltd., during the period 1973 to 1980. Exploration resumed in 1994, following acquisition of the interests originally held by Texasgulf and Great Plains Development by American Bullion Minerals Ltd.Prospectors were first drawn to the area by prominent limonitic stain zones exposed in creek gullies in the western part of the property. These zones are developed on the alteration halo at the western periphery of the deposit. The potential ore zones do not crop out and were first exposed in a bulldozer trench excavated in 1971. Subsequent exploration was by percussion and diamond drilling, guided to some extent by induced polarization surveys. In 1976, estimated resources contained within two crudely designed open pits were 41 million tonnes with an average grade of 0.56% Cu and 0.34 g/t Au, with a cutoff grade of0.25% Cu. New resource estimates based on a major drilling program completed by American Bullion in 1994 were released as this paper goes to press. These estimates were calculated using various copper cutoff grades; at the 0.4% Cu cutoff, the ""in-situ geological reserve"" is given as 100 million tonnes grading 0.58% Cu and 0.46 g! t Au (American Bullion Minerals Ltd., 1995).The deposit consists mainly of pyrite, chalcopyrite and increasing bornite at depth, in zones of quartz-vein stockwork hosted by an elongate body of altered monzonite porphyry of latest Triassic or earliest Jurassic age. The stock intruded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of probable Stuhini Group affinity and is in faulted contact with sedimentary rocks of the Jurassic Bowser Lake Group. Gypsum stockworks are developed in the higher levels of the subvolcanic porphyry system. Late-stage quartz-carbonate veins carry small amounts of galena and sphalerite. Complex faulting within the deposit makes drill-hole correlations difficult. Alteration assemblages include an early potassic phase, almost completely destroyed by later phyllic alteration, and surrounded by a propylitic assemblage dominated by ankeritic carbonates in altered sedimentary rocks.The deposit has characteristics of bath the alkalic and calc-alkalic classes of porphyry copper deposits. The development of quartzvein stockwork suggests a calc-alkalic affinity, but the hostrocks contain little or no free quartz, molybdenum is present in trace amounts only and gold values are significant. Copper grades vary between wide extremes with unusually high grades in some sections of the deposit. The weight of evidence available in the 1970s led us to place the Red-Chris deposit firmly in the alkalic family. The quartz-sericite alteration assemblage was attributed to breakdown of potassium feldspar in a near-surface alteration environment in which seawater may have had a significant role. These interpretalions are retained here, but preliminary conclusions from the most recent work suggest that they may require some modification."

Canada ranks second in the list of world consumers of natural gas. In 1923 our production was nearly fifteen million thousand cubic feet valued at $5,800,000. Our output, however, appears very small compared with that of the United States, which in 1923 totalled over one thousand and eight million cubic feet, valued at $240,000,000. Natural gas is found in commercial quantities in three? provinces in Canada. New Brunswick: Natural gas in New Brunswick has been utilized commercially only since 1912,although the investigation of oil and gas possibilities of the province commenced as early as 1859. The annual production is a little more than one-twentieth of the total Canadian production and remains fairly constant from year to year. Ontario: In Ontario the earliest gas wells were drilled in Essex and Welland counties between the years 1885 and 1890. On account of the small demand in Canada the cities of Detroit and Buffalo were supplied with large quantities of gas from these wells, but this export was curtailed in 1898 and finally ceased in 1900. The production of natural gas in Ontario, mainly from fields in Lambton, Kent, Essex, Norfolk, Haldimand and Welland counties, increased rapidly from 1900 until the peak was reached in 1917, when over nineteen million thousand cubic feet valued at $3,641,587 was consumed.

Radar Technologies are successful implemented in the military industry since decades and recently found their way in the mining industry as level gauge radars for bin applications. The latest generation of microwave radar sensors are capable to provide geometrical data of the surrounding area of mining machines, too. Radar sensors are an improvement to laser scanners as they are more robust and able to penetrate dust and mist. Radar sensors will be the key source for operator assistance systems. indurad and RWTH Aachen University conducted a large series of tests at open pit mines and underground coal mines to determine the potential of the new two dimensional Dual Range Radar iDRR. Several applications were determined as highly feasible and are now completed respectively in the implementation stage. The authors are giving an insight in the experimental results, the implementation and an outlook of future applications for this technology.

The Noranda concentrator was placed in operation in October, 1928, and the object of this paper is to outline operations during the twelve months which have elapsed since that time. The ores milled are massive sulphides carrying copper and gold, and, in certain cases, zinc. These ores have a specific gravity of about 3.8. The average assay of the copper-gold ore so far treated has been 2.0 - 3.5 percent Cu; 0.10 - 0.20 oz. Au; 40 - 51 percent Fe; and 6 - 15 percent SiO2. In this ore the copper occurs almost entirely as chalcopyrite, and the iron which is not combined with the copper is present mainly as pyrite and pyrrhotite. ?some iron is also combined with the silica, the ratio being about 1 to 4, and a small percentage is present as magnetite. The occurrence of the gold has been shown by microscopic work carried out by Prof. L. C. Graton, of Harvard University, to be very variable. Some of it is free, and is included within the base-metal sulphides or occurs at their boundaries. A similar distribution also holds for a portion of the gold which is combined as a telluride. Little is so far known of the occurrence of the silver other than that some of it may be combined with the gold in the telluride, petzite. The copper-zinc ore contains up to 6 percent copper, and has a very variable zinc content. The copper in such ore is present as chalcopyrite, and the zinc as sphalerite. In starting the mill we had three conditions to face; the first of these was climatic, the second was the lack of skilled flotation operators, and the third was the ore itself." The last of these three proved much more difficult to contend with than the other two combined.

Introduction The last two or three decades have been marked by striking developments in methods of mining and tunnelling. In view .of increased competition and various economic factors, intensive ' mining has been largely practised, and no effort seems to have been spared to increase outputs and lower the cost of production. In metalliferous mining, the compressed-air rock-drill has effected marked savings in this direction, while in coal mining, the coal-cutting machine has revolutionized mining methods and materially contributed to economical working. Yet, for many years, little or no advance was made in methods of handling the rock, or coal, once it had been successfully broken. Loading by hand is, undoubtedly, the most laborious occupation in the whole of mining operations, and it is also the greatest single item that enters into the cost of production. In view of this, the lag of improved handling methods behind the process of winning the rock or coal is rather surprising. The point, however, was appreciated by mining men, and the introduction of various forms of conveyors and loaders is the result. The belt conveyor, the chain conveyor, the shaker conveyor, and the mechanical shovel entered various parts of the field, but it was left to scraping to provide a method of both conveying and loading. From the pure loading point of view, the choice lies between mechanical shovels and scraper loaders. While it is realised that each of these machines has applications peculiar to itself, yet it should be realised that much work which has hitherto been done by mechanical shovels can be done equally effectively with scraper loaders and at a considerable saving both from the point of view of initial outlay and upkeep.

This paper presents an overview of passive, engineered, biologically-based anaerobic bioreactor (ABR) treatment systems of the sort that can be used to remove dissolved copper from mine wastewaters. The paper begins with a brief history of the origins of this treatment technology and continues with a discussion of principles of engineered wetlands (EWs, advanced kinds of constructed wetlands, CWs) and the use of vertical sub-surface flow (VSSF) varieties that contain pulp & paper biosolids as the reactive medium for EW cells. A brief outline of a procedural methodology used in evaluating the potential for biological treatment on a site-specific basis is also included. An introduction to the microbiology of passive biologically-based treatment systems is followed by some recent research results in the general area of wetlands and ABR research. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of several sites known by the authors to have successfully (or not) demonstrated the potential of this treatment option.

Mineralogical studies and concentration tests were conducted on samples from an oolitic iron deposit from the Peace River district in Alberta to determine what concentrate grades and metal recoveries could be obtained. The samples assayed 32 to 37 wt. % Fe, and consisted of goethite, nontronite, ferruginous opal, siderite , quartz, amorphous phosphate and illite . Flotation with fatty acids yielded the best over-all results. A flotation concentrate from a composite sample of the iron horizon assayed, by weight, 43.0% Fe, 12.3% SiO2 , 1.9% CaD, 0.9% MgO, 4.5% Al2O3 and 2.0% P2O5 and lost 17.2% on ignition, for an iron recovery of 48.8% and a silica rejection of 80%. When heated to drive off the water, the concentrate assayed 52 w t. % Fe and 14. 8% w t. % SiO2
