"FLEX 31 is a chemically enhanced sodium isopropyl xanthate. Developed by Charles Tennant & Co (Canada) Ltd and has shown improved collection properties over SIPX for sulphide minerals flotation. Improvement of recoveries, grades, faster kinetics, lower dosages, high pyrite and pyrrhotite rejection capabilities have all been exhibited by FLEX 31. Recent plant trial carried out in the copper circuit at one of the largest copper mine in Zambia shown over US $ 2.00 Million annual improvement on the bottom line over SIPX at current copper prices. Data produced also showed superior grade and recoveries from rougher concentrates that previously had not been attainable with other reagents effectively. Flex 31 has also shown positive outcomes with zinc, Copper/Zinc, arsenopyrite and copper/molybdenum ores.IntroductionSodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) is one of the most popular flotation chemicals on the market today. Somewhat more specific than amyl xanthate, SIPX is used in a variety of ores like copper/zinc, lead/zinc, arsenopyrite/pyrite, and many others (Melis et al., 1991). An investigation carried out by the research division of Charles Tennant & Company (Canada) Limited has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX. This product has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries of copper and copper activated minerals. The product was named “FLEX 31”."

The energy required to fragment a rock is proportional to the increase in the fracture surface area and hence is proportional to the rock?s surface area. In comminution, the slope of the linear relationship between size reduction ratio and specific energy is usually defined as grindability. Another definition of grindability based on newly created specific surface area and specific energy is introduced. The two definitions for grindability reflect the grindability properties of rocks and can be used to measure of the efficiency of mills or crushers. The feed particle size distribution influences the energy needed to comminute the rock. For a given ratio of average feed size to product size, the smaller feed size requires more energy.

FROM AN OLD MANUSCRIPT THE text for this contribution to the history of the Patio process is a page taken from a Spanish manuscript of Bartholomé Arzaj Sanches y Uela, now in the possession of the library of Brown University (see Figure 1). I owe the photographic print to the courtesy of the librarian. The date, as will be seen, is 1577. The subject is the treatment of silver ores at Potosi, in old Peru, but in modern Bolivia. The group of drawings (see Figure 1) is entitled "Arrangement of the machines in which the ores of silver are ground on the bank of Potosi, the one of two batteries and the other of one". First, top-left, we have the sketch of a "machine of one battery" operated by a water-wheel. From this mill the water runs in part along an aqueduct supported by pillars to the two-battery mill and in part down the hillside, where men are at work with "tubs, which are called cochas, in which are washed the charges of ore and amalgam". Along the top of the page are shown the "various offices in which are stored the copper, the salt, the ucha [llama dung, used for fuel], the lime, and other materials for the re-duction of the ores". To the right of these are "apartments and warehouses in which is stored the ore brought down from the mountain"?the cerro de Potosi. Through the arched portal come the "sheep [llamas] on which is brought down the ore". To this is added a reference to "the second gate, which closes the whole works". On the level above the aqueduct are seen six men carrying skin-bags that contain water. This is being sprinkled on the ore. On the extreme right are six more of these water-carriers. Next comes the two-battery mill. The mortero, or mortar, is marked on the right. Another description says, "Stone, on which the stamps crush the ore, which is called a mortar". To the left of these are indicated "screens of wire in which the ore is sifted after it has been crushed". Farther to the left, near the ore-washers, is a "shed, in which is placed the metallurgist to test the ore of the boxes". Along the left side of the page are sundry buildings, one of which is labelled a "shed in which are placed the cones of silver". Near it, lower, to the right, is the "furnace, in which are roasted the sulphides to facilitate treatment". Farther to the right is the "place where the Indians mix the charges of sulphide ore, which is called a buitron". Alongside is a "buitron in which the charges are prepared for reduction". Inside is a container, to which are attached the words "measure, called topo" On the extreme right is "another buitron in which the Indians mix the ores with their feet, as well as the heaps for the preparation of the reduction". Near the bottom, on the extreme left, is the "chapel where the holy sacri¬fice of the mass is celebrated". Under the first buitron is the "place where they dry the moist ores, called pãpear".

The Lac des Iles Mine (LDI) is located approximately 100 km northwest of Thunder Bay, ON. The mine has been in operation since 1993. The initial mine production was 2,300 mtpd and increased to 15,000 mtpd following a mine expansion project that was completed in 2001. Effective Oct. 29, 2008, LDI was shut-down under care and maintenance due to low metal prices. Prior to shutting down, LDI was the only primary PGM deposit in operation in Canada and of the few found globally. The complex geology and physical properties of the deposit causes several challenges for the concentrator. This paper will discuss the solutions to the main challenges of attaining nameplate tonnage and achieve satisfactory Pd recovery and concentrate grades.

"The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. Some measures, rejected in the past largely on the grounds of capj.tal. expenditure, now make economic sense in the light of future escalating energy costs."

Magnetic, electromagnetic and gravimetric surveys have played an important role in the mineral exploration leading to the discovery of three major massive sulphide deposits in the Anvil-Vangorda area of the Yukon Territory. During 1964 and 1965 a saturation prospecting program, relying heavily on the integrated use of airborne and ground geophysical survey techniques, led to the discovery of the Faro deposit, which was subsequently proven to be a 63-millionton lead-zinc orebody. Locating the Faro deposit, the largest found to date in this overburden-covered region, involved an exploration sequence requiring the selection of a favourable geologic environment, aeromagnetic and electromagnetic surveys, property acquisition of anomalous areas and detailed ground geophysical surveys, followed by rotary drill testing, detailed gravimetric surveys and diamond core drilling.

"SummaryBritish Petroleum plc is developing a new gold recovery process known as coal gold agglomeration (CGA) for the recovery of gold from its ores. Liberated gold grains are recovered with high efficiency by adhering to agglomerates of coal and oil. The process is simple, can recover gold grains down to very fine sizes, avoids the large scale use of cyanide and provides the industry with an important new process option.A technical appraisal of the process has been performed on an extensive range of gold bearing materials. Ore types have been identified from which high gold recoveries can be achieved. A spreadsheet based computer program has been used to estimate the preliminary capital and operating costs of the process. Comparison with established gold production costs shows that the process costs of CGA, on the appropriate ore types, are potentially very attractive, which will enable economic treatment of lower grade ores than is currently possible using conventional cyanidation. Treatment of known placer deposits or gravity concentration plant tailings may be the most rapid means of demonstrating the process at a commercial scale prior to more widespread applications.1. INTRODUCTIONWestern world gold production for the 1980s has shown rapid growth sustained by a demand for gold at a favourable price (Fig. 1). Heap leaching and CIP/CIL operations have been responsible for the major part of new production during the 1970s and 1980s with present overall production costs averaging US$200/oz in Canada, USA and Australia and US$265/oz in South Africa [l]. A great deal of research and process development effort in the 1980s has been towards the treatment of refractory ores. Operating costs for the economic processing of these ore types by currently available routes are around US$300/oz [2]."

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. "This paper describes the benefits and disadvantages of fully autogenous grinding when compared to grinding with steel grinding media. The study is a real case study based on a low tonnage, high grade mining project in a remote location in a developing country. The study compares the capital and operating costs of using either SAG mill, Ball mill, Crusher (SABC) or fully autogenous (AG) grinding circuits and produces an economical analysis of the project for both options. The economics have been developed for the overall project, including mining, processing, environmental and the infrastructure as well as for the additional cost of constructing a fully autogenous grinding circuit instead of the original plan of a SAG Mill, Ball Mill circuit.The paper also describes the development of the autogenous grinding circuit at Outokumpu Oy, Pyhäsalmi mine. This experience was used to design the autogenous grinding circuit for the case study. Pyhäsalmi Concentrator has over 30 years of experience in operating autogenous grinding circuits and therefore provides a sound base for the new circuit design.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ore using steel grinding media is currently the most commonly used method in the mining industry. Autogenous grinding, ore replaces iron media, is also common especially in Europe and Africa. Iron ore industry in North America uses autogenous grinding in primary and/or secondary stages extensively. In gold, copper and other base metal industries, autogenous grinding is not as common, although there are operations where pebble grinding is or has been used in the secondary grinding stage. There are many variations of autogenous grinding in use in the mining industry. These variations include different mill sizes, mill length to diameter ratios, ore lump sizes, screening and pebble crushing configurations."

Detailed knowledge of velocity-depth trends is essential for constructing well-to seismic ties, determining background velocity and generating synthetic seismic traces for interpreting seismic amplitudes in terms of porosity, lithology and pore fluid type. The acoustic properties of shales are of particular importance in the exploration setting as shales constitute more than 80% of sediments and rocks in siliclastic environments. Seismic and sonic log data may be used for estimating overpressure in shales in order to maintain borehole stability during drilling. In addition, velocities in shales can be used for predicting its mechanical properties and hence, borehole collapse. Despite of the apparent importance of understanding shale acoustics, sonic logs in shales are frequently unavailable or unreliable especially for older wells. Hence, it is essential to compute pseudo-velocity logs from other available information. This can be accomplished by using empirical relationships or rock physics transforms. In this study we have compared the predictive power of resistivity (Faust 1951, Hubert 2008) and porosity based models (Wyllie 1956, Holt & Fjær 2003) for computing synthetic P-wave velocity logs using wireline log data from mudstone intervals at three North Sea wells. The wells 6507/2-1, 6507/2-2 and 6507/2-1 are located at the Haltenbanken area at the Norwegian Sea. The wells targeted hydrocarbon potential at the upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary sandstone sequences. The sandstone beds are overlain by thick Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences of mudstones. Since our primary goal is to model acoustic velocities in shale, we used wireline data from the Nordland (NL), Rogaland (RL) and Hordaland (HL) groups that are mainly composed of mudstone. The mudstone beds were identified from the well log data by using natural gamma log, sonic and resistivity data as well as information from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate website. The volume of shale was estimated from the natural gamma log and the data points with values higher than 0.65 were discarded. Similarly, the data points with shale volume less than 40 % were discarded. Furthermore, exceptionally high resistivity values amounting to more than 6 Ohm m were not included in the analysis. Porosities were determined from the density log assuming 2.7 and 1.05 g/cm3 for matrix and fluid densities, respectively. The depth that was used for calculating Vp from Faust (1953) was the depth below mudline in order to the compare of well data from wells that have been drilled at different depths (Hubert 2008).

"Alumina is the main source of aluminium and it is extracted almost exclusively from bauxite ores found in the Southern hemisphere. Clays are abundant minerals that contain from 15 to 40% w/w of alumina from which it can be extracted by various processes. This paper reviews the processes used for the extraction of alumina from clays and discusses results obtained with a clay sample from the Murdochville area in the Quebec Province. The application of a conventional process to this clay did not yield an acceptable recovery although smelter grade alumina was produced. A modification to the process allows increasing alumina recovery from 85% to more than 92%. The application of the improved flow sheet to other alumina carriers failed to yield comparable recovery, showing that an optimum processing path for the recovery of alumina should be found for individual clay materials.INTRODUCTIONMost of the aluminium smelters are fed with alumina extracted from bauxite found in the Southern hemisphere. Bauxite is processed by the Bayer process that uses a caustic leach of the ore. In the middle of the century, the US Bureau of mines, motivated by the fear of an alumina delivery disruption, conducted several research projects aiming at producing alumina from non bauxitic ores. These projects led to the development of various acid leaching processes (Habashi, 1993). The sulphuric and hydrochloric acid leaching processes were brought to pilot plant evaluation (Bengtson, 1979), while nitric and other leach liquors were tested in the laboratory (Phillips and Wills, 1982; Habashi, 1983). Although clays are abundant and inexpensive minerals, the studied processes remained uncompetitive with the alumina extraction from bauxite (Hudson, 1987 page 42; Peters et al., 1962) for which reserves are estimated to support alumina production for the next 50 years (Oye et al., 1999). On the other hand, the local extraction of alumina from clays could significantly reduce the transportation costs of alumina to smelters and provide an alternative source of alumina supply from the Southern hemisphere countries. Also, the extraction of secondary products for some types of clay (Nasyrov et al., 1999) containing significant amounts of potassium and sodium could provide an additional return that may improve the economics of alumina production from clays."

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development. At the Vale Inco Ontario Operations, the working environment is rapidly evolving with organizational changes, new business systems and software tools. These changes are required in order to meet today?s challenging business environment. Mining professionals are focusing on the development of safe and achievable mine plans to maximize mining value while reducing the potential of project delays and production shortfalls. This paper explores how new design tools, techniques and system designs in mine planning are being developed to optimize the value of every ton of ore mined and processed. To differentiate from other papers on long-term planning, this paper focuses on the concept of business planning at the mines. Business planning is the understanding and optimization of the relationship between mine plans and the value it adds in the overall process. The management and key stakeholders of Vale Inco have recognized that the development of a robust mine planning system and programs are essential for the long-term sustainability of the operations.

"Sphalerite flotation in the absence of copper activation at moderately alkaline pH has been observed in laboratory studies. An in-plant test of this observation was conducted at Kidd Creek Mine LTD. using a portable minicell flotation circuit. The results confirm that raising the pH causes sphalerite flotation.The testwork with the minicell circuit is described. The circuit, built around 2, 51 cells donated by the Noranda Technology Centre, was funded by Air Liquide and NSERC. It includes a data acquisition system to monitor continuously dissolved oxygen, pH and Pulp potential.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of sphalerite is normally practised by adding CuSO4 as an activator under alkaline pH. Recently there have been a number of laboratory and plant examples of sphalerite flotation without deliberate addition of cu++ ions (Girczys, 1972; Mukherjee, 1976; McTavish, 1980; Marouf et al., 1986; Mielczarski, 1986; Leroux et al., 1987; Palsson and Forssberg, 1989; Sandoval-Caballero et al., 1990; Zhang et al., 1991).In batch tests, with a sample of Pb/Zn ore from Polaris, Leroux et al. (1987) found that sphalerite became floatable after adjusting pH to 9. 5-11: they ruled out natural floatability or the formation of elemental sulphur on the surface but suspected iron hydroxy compounds were responsible. Sandoval-Caballero (1990) conducted a continuous minicell test at Brunswick Mining and obtained a 44 % Zn recovery and 40.5 % Zn grade concentrate without deliberately adding CuS04 at pH= 10.5. With single mineral studies, Zhang et al. (1991) revealed good sphalerite floatability (over 80% recovery) in pH range 8 to 11 and found that this floatability was related to pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) level and Fe++ species present in the system.To explore further the conditions under which sphalerite can float without addition of CuSO4 , a continuous pilot test using minicells was performed at Falconbridge Ltd., Kidd Creek division. The set-up is briefly described (a more detailed description is given elsewhere in these proceedings) with emphasis on the data acquisition system - dissolved oxygen, pulp potential and pH were monitored continuously. Results of testwork investigating pH, CuS04 addition and gas composition are presented."

"Microflotation, laboratory batch, and in-plant minicell continuous tests were conducted to determine if copper ions not only activate sphalerite but also depress pyrite when the minerals are together. Microflotation tests showed that pyrite recovery increased with addition of copper ions in the pH range of 5-10 when alone, but decreased when sphalerite was also present. Batch flotation tests (Red Dog ore) showed that upon addition of copper, pyrite recovery decreased significantly. The continuous tests (Louvicourt Mine) confirmed this and indicated that with excess copper pyrite recovery can increase. The results suggest there is competition for copper and xanthate in favour of sphalerite. To take advantage of this competition it may be necessary to control the sequence and rate of copper, collector, and lime addition. INTRODUCTIONFlotation, in common with all physical separations, is an imperfect process that results in misplacement of minerals. One source of this imperfection is accidental activation by contaminating metal ions. An important practical example is the misplacement of pyrite to zinc concentrates. Flotation of sphalerite generally requires activation by copper ions, added as copper sulphate. Copper ions are also used to activate pyrite [l] hence there is the suspicion that accidental activation contributes to the recovery of pyrite (Py) with the sphalerite (Sp). However, recent literature has shown that copper ions may make Py less floatable if Sp is also present. Xu et al. [2] conducted continuous minicell tests in-plant at Kidd Creek Operations (division of Falconbridge Ltd.) and showed that while the addition of copper sulphate improved zinc/iron selectivity, it did so as much by reducing the recovery of pyrite as increasing zinc recovery (Figure 1)."

The technology of percussion drilling is well mastered. The lower cost of percussion drilling allows more holes to be drilled for the same budget. However significant differences are often observed between percussion and diamond drill assay data. This is due to the increased level of contamination associated with the percussion drilling process. Statistical studies on twinned drillholes show that diamond and percussion assays cannot simply be merged in a traditional kriging approach. The question then arises on how to use both types of data to produce reliable resource estimates. To take into account the lower reliability of the percussion assays, a noise characterized by a variance is added to these data. The methodology consists of two steps: 1. Cokriging of the equivalent diamond value at the percussion assay locations. 2. Block kriging using diamond assays and equivalent diamond values, calculated previously, adding to these data a noise, whose variance is the cokriging variance of step 1. This particular way of achieving kriging is called kriging with variance of measurement error. The paper illustrates this innovative methodology with an application on an iron deposit. The results of this method is compared to block kriging using only diamond assays and the gain in precision is quantified. An extension of that approach to multi-element cokriging is also presented.
