Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

The phenomena of nature cannot present themselves to any thinking wild without claiming from it some solution. The earth, as it has often been observed, is laid out like a well ordered cabinet, presenting to us, in measure, some means of judging how the laws of nature and the essential properties of matter have worked out all we see before us. "That there have been depositions of strata gradually laid down aud stocked with the remains of the living objects, vegetable and animal, that flourished when they were being imposed, is an universally acknowledged fact. It speaks of a constantly maintained series of operations whereby the globe has been brought to its present condition, and which are ever advancing it to stages that are still before it. That immeasurable ages have been consumed in effecting these developments is also conceded. We witness the very graduated rate of the existing advances and can see that the past action must have been conducted in the same slow deliberate manner. There are many questions, however, upon which inquirers are not agreed, hence they are still within the domains of fair discussion.What has led to those great climatic changes whereby the same portions of the earth have had at various times climates that were glacial, temperate, and tropical? What causes the constant contortions and dislocations of strata and the upheaval and depression of land levels, and that there is a tendency to alternation in the parallel areas undergoing opposite kinds of movement as if the sinking of one area balanced the rIsing of another? What is the reason that the centres of volcanic action are continually shifting, and that the line of greatest activity is always upon the rising areas? That portions of the earth have been subjected to intense alid long continued volcanic action, and again to long periods of repose, and that the periods of activity and repose are·recurrent at long intervals of time? What the mountain chains of the world are in broadly parallel bands? What has caused the stratified rocks to be tilted from their original?

The Patawarta Diapir, located in the northern Flinders Ranges (South Australia), has intruded into late Proterozoic Wilpena Group sedimentary rocks. The diapir contains disrupted blocks of a wide variety of rock types, most of which can be correlated with the Lower Callanna Beds of Willouran age, in a matrix of predominantly carbonate and siltstone breccia. Mafic rocks in the diapir appear to predate intrusion of the diapir. As with many other diapirs in the Flinders Ranges, copper mineralization is present in the diapir and occurs as narrow veins consisting essentially of carbonate with chalcopyrite and pyrite that formed after diapiric intrusion.Fluid inclusion studies demonstrate that the mineralizing fluid was a Na-Ca-K-Cl brine; probably derived by expulsion of interstitial water following emplacement of the diapir, with dissolution of evaporites within the Callanna Beds sediments and enrichment in copper by reaction with these sediments and associated basic igneous rocks. Mineral assemblages combined with fluid inclusion and geochemical data indicate a possible environment of vein formation of T ÿ 165°C, pH ÿ 4.3 ± 0.9 and log fO2 ÿ -47.3 ± 0.5. Sulphur isotope analyses indicate d34Sfluid ÿ 10 per mil, suggesting evaporites in the Proterozoic sediments as the major source of the sulphur but with some additional sulphur from an igneous source, possibly leached from the malic rocks of the diapir.

In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

This paper discusses the impacts that advances in metallurgy and process engineering have on minerals project execution. Ausenco's business is focused on integrating minerals processing technology and the delivery of cost effective processing plants that exceed client performance expectations. The metallurgical development is a small but critical part of this process. Metallurgical development and innovation outcomes need to be transformed into an engineered solution and that solution converted into an operating plant in a cost conscious and competitive environment. Including new or innovative processes in a project flow sheet increases a project's technical and commercial risk. However, it also gives the project, and/or the engineering company, a potential advantage over projects using mainline practices. Managing the balance between risk and opportunity has been a cornerstone of Ausenco's success in recent years. Some advances in "technology" that are discussed in the paper include: larger capacity equipment new flow sheet concepts simplification of process interfaces, and more effective project strategies The common theme is that having a new idea can be the easy bit, putting it into operation effectively involves numerous people, many interfaces and strong project management.

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

This paper reviews the gold mining history and recent exploration activities on a number of beaches in the Catlins area of coastal South Otago. Past mining history and recent sampling indicate the presence of economically significant concentrations of placer gold, as well as anomalous PGM, and various heavy mineral species. A local source for this placer mineralisation is considered a strong possibility, along with a contribution from the Waiau River catchment via longshore drift. Blacksand beds in Jurassic sandstones of the Southland Synclinorium may represent this local source of mineralisation on the modern beaches. The possibility of placer mineralisation extending onto the inner continental shelf is also considered. Further exploratory work is justified, both for in situ Jurassic blacksand deposits, and to delineate mineralisation in the modern beach and inner shelf environment.

A certain amount of "give and take" must be adopted in the treatment of small local cavities and mounds.In all cases it is desirable that the surveys made should be tied on to the lease surveys for the purpose of location, and that all levels should be reduced to the mine datum. There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

Experiments conducted at Tahmoor Colliery, Sydney Basin, have demonstrated the variability in chemical and isotopic composition of seam gases issuing from boreholes in the Bulli seam and desorbing from lump coal from the same source.From this work it appears that an immediate preferential release of methane accompanies the physical disturbance of the coal seam by penetration with development or drilling or by detachment. In addition, both early released methane and carbon dioxide are depleted in 13C relative to later desorbed gases, therefore the analyses of gas samples taken after such events may not reflect the true bulk composition of the undisturbed seam gas in situ. A method for overcoming this problem by taking gas samples at depth in the "steady state" is proposed.

In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The comprehensive strength index YT developed can predict the tumble index of the sinter product quite well, but the comprehensive productivity index YP cannot be used to evaluate the productivity effectively.CITATION:Zhu, D Q, Xue, Y X, Pan, J and Shi, B J, 2017. The Hidden Valley Gold Project is located in a remote and mountainous area of the Morobe Province approximately 30 km south of the township of Bulolo and approximately 90 km south-southwest of the provincial capital, Lae. The Hidden Valley deposit was discovered in 1984 with the nearby Hamata and Kaveroi deposits discovered in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Reserves (Harmony, 2009) at these three deposits are 42.1 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 2.9 million ounces of gold and 45 million ounces of silver. A further 5.4 million ounces of gold and 84 million ounces of silver are in the resources category. The process plant is designed to treat 4.2 million tonnes per year of gold/silver ore extracted by open cut mining methods. Ore is classified into three ore types according to oxidation state: oxide, transition and primary. The silver to gold grade ratio is high for the Hidden Valley and Kaveroi ores, generally in the range 15 - 20:1, and much lower for Hamata, typically 1 - 2:1: Primary ore is the dominant ore type at Hidden Valley with sulfur grades up to about two per cent sulfur. Oxide and transition ores are more prevalent at the Hamata deposit, but its primary ore has up to five per cent sulfur grades. Variable ore types, particularly in the initial years of operation, high silver to gold ratios and limited plant site area, due to the challenging terrain, present the main processing challenges for this project. This paper describes the operating strategies and process development for the main areas of this circuit, highlighting selections of processes and equipment that achieve cost effective, yet flexible solutions to the treatment of ores from these deposits.

Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. They weigh 240 lb. and 170 lb. respectively.One compartment of the winze is decked over, and the bedpieces, which are 8 ft. 9 in. lengths of 6 in. pipe with three short lengths of plate welded to the underside, are placed over the sinking compartment, either transversely or parallel to the winze. Three 3 inch pipes act as spreaders between them.Welded to the top of each bedpiece is a 6-in. by iHn. plate 3 ft. 0 in. long with four 4-in. by 1.5-in. slots cut longitudinally at 10 in. centres. Two 10 in. by 4-in. timbers are bolted to these plates, the distance between them being adjusted to suit the holes in the winch bedplate, which is bolted to the 10-in. by 4-in. timbers.Two short lengths of 3 in. pipe are welded to each bedpiece at 4 ft. 4 in. centres.
