A rationale is presented for the use of vegetation on mine dumps to minimise runoff and infiltration which become vehicles for potential pollution. The unique topography of mine dumps promotes high atmospheric advection which leads to extraordinary energy levels for evaporation discharge - the driving force of vegetation "pumps". This effectiveness is mainly a function of how well the vegetation will grow on a given site. Recent advances in technology allow water discharge by vegetation to be measured semi-automatically, accurately and cost effectively. As a result the basis now exists for a thorough evaluation of the optimum mine dump vegetation cover. This paper presents the current status of dump rehabilitation as seen by the mining industry. The significant prospects for use of vegetation to minimise mine water related problems with subsequent savings in capital and operational cost are also outlined. However, to examine the crucial questions of optimum hydrological ability, suitability and cost effectiveness of various types of dump vegetation a proposition is made to interested parties in the mining industry: The CSIRO needs potential study sites to evaluate the hydrological ability of vegetation under mine dump conditions.

Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014. PIP is regularly engaged in businesses where Greenfield Capital Projects are under- delivering on the expected business case. In most of these projects, we can identify that rigorous review has been carried out on the design and financial cost elements and substantial reporting is maintained to Boards on progress versus plan of project completion and cost. However, in all sites of this nature that we have worked at, the planning, design and execution of the operational elements or æwiringÆ of the organisation have fallen short and resulted in significant extra cost or opportunity cost (lost tonnage or quality) during start-up. When compared to the amount of planning and resources that have been poured into the capital side, the ledger on the æwiringÆ side is typically fairly sparse. This presentation outlines the importance of running a disciplined, rigorous process to prepare the human and wiring side of a start-up to ensure rapid start-ups and put the site on the pathway to high performance. It gives an outline of the rigorous process PIP has used with projects to ensure excellent start-ups.

Overcoring is a common technique to measure in situ rock stress using the concept of stress relief. The strains measured during overcoring are used to calculate the stress tensor assuming continuous, homogeneous, isotropic and linear elastic behaviour. This approach does not recognise any effect of the thickness of the rock annulus produced during overcoring instead assuming that the stresses are entirely a function of the difference in strain between the start of the overcoring and the end with no regard to the transient strains produced. Three-dimensional numerical modelling was used to simulate the overcoring process and investigate the impact of core diameter on the transient stresses and strains during overcoring. This study showed that in thicker core, maximum transient axial stresses and strains occur when the drill bit approaches the measuring point and greater tensile axial stresses were produced when the annulus was thinner. Leaders have invested heavily in traditional safety management to improve safety performance over the years. This primarily involved: • fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard) • improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc) • making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). These approaches have helped improve safety performance significantly during the last 50 years and will continue to play a role in the future. Although these approaches may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. A group of stratabound-stratiform Fe-Ba-Zn-Pb-Ag deposits within the La Minita mining district of Michoacan, southwest Mexico have been investigated. The results of the study show that these deposits were generated around submarine hot-springs issuing in a Cretaceous island-arc environment. The exhalative mineralization, which is both epigenetic and syngenetic in character, was developed above fault-systems which constituted the loci of both volcanism and subsequent hydrothermal systems.Fluid inclusion data suggest two hydrothermal events during ore mineralization, one at 240¦C and the other at 161 to 205¦C, with salinities between 2.1 and 12.8 wt.% NaCl equivalent. Stable isotope data support a marine origin for the ore-fluids, as well as, for carbon and sulfur. Strontium isotope data suggest that Sr in the barites was extracted from the volcanics and limestones by circulating seawater. The ore-depositional environment was one of shallow, sub-tropical marine character, where mineralization was in part geochemically controlled by carbonate reefal facies within the volcanic/pyroclastic suite.

The Tennant Creek goldfield is one of the largest gold producing districts in Australia, and major deposits, including Gecko, Juno, Orlando, Peko, Warrego, Nobles Nob, Golden Forty, Argo, TC 8 and White Devil have produced more than four million ounces of gold over the past two decades. Gold-copper-bismuth mineralisation at Tennant Creek occurs in lenticular, ellipsoidal or pipe-like bodies of magnetite-hematite ironstones which are hosted in turbiditic sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic age (Large, 1975; Wedekind, Large and Williams, 1989; Le Messurier, Williams and Blake, 1990; Morrison, Donnellan and Hussey, 1992).

Gaseous desulphurization from hot metal- lurgical slags containing sulphur mainly as sulphide and(or) sulphate was measured under `low at four different oxygen pressures. The total gas rate was from 1.7 to 2,8 litre/min. Crushed slag samples weighing 2 to 12 g were used for the experiments. The amount of SO2 gas evolved from samples kept at 15500 was rieasured over tires ranging from 20 to 300 min. The gaseous desulphurization rate of sul- phide sulphur becomes high as the oxygen part- ial pressure is increased, while that of sul- phate sulphur is high under low oxygen pressure. The effect of basicity on the desulphurization rate of sulphide sulphur in oxygen atmospheres is not obvious in the range of basicity from one to three. Changes in the ratio of sulphide to sulphate sulphur during the run in oxygen axe analysed. Desulphurization reactions and the rate controlling steps are discussed. The Mount Morgan mine occupies a unique place in the mining history of Australia and although not as glamorous during the second phase of its existence, it made a significant contribution to the technical and financial history of the nation throughout its life. The stories of the intrigue surrounding its discovery and early operation, the enormous return received by its original investors in its first five years as a public company, its influence on the local, national and international scene to its final closure have been documented in many publications, the most recent and authoritative being by John Kerr (1982). Institute publications as far back as 1911 have documented details of the mining, metallurgical and engineering practices of the two companies which worked the 100 or so acres which were alleged to be `the richest single gold mine in the world'. Within the Institute records appear the names of Presidents, Institute Medal recipients and others connected with Mount Morgan who have played an important part in the Institute history.

Geometallurgy is often a misunderstood and poorly defined concept. The first thing the paper will attempt is to provide a definition of geometallurgy. Ultimately this paper has been written to provide guidance to geologists, mining engineers and processing professionals as to what geometallurgy means in the crucial early phases of a potential mining project between the time of discovery and the time of commencing construction, should this occur. The paper covers the options available for conducting a geometallurgical study of a resource or orebody, appropriate to the level of definition required in the projectÆs development cycle. The paper will then describe how the geometallurgical information generated is subsequently used in calculations, planning and preparation of reports designed to inform and reassure stakeholders, such as the market. Ultimately in a successful project, appropriate options adopted in the development phase will form the basis of an ongoing geometallurgical program that links the major site disciplines for the good of the operation.CITATION:David, D, 2013. Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised. In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations: Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits. Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant. Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation. Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early-1980s. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill? projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product. JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. JKTech was established in 1986 to commercialise and market the most promising outcomes and thus ensure their continuing availability to the mineral industry. These include: commercial software (JKSimMet, JKSimBlast and JKMetAccount); monographs (Comminution and Blasting); technologies (Mine-to-Mill? and flotation optimisation); and hardware products (JKFrothCam, JKJetLift? and the Mineral Liberation Analyser). This paper summarises these technologies and their benefits.

While the haematite concentrates produced in Eastern Canada and the magnetite concentrates that Australia will soon be producing are different feed materials, the pellets they produce have similar physical and metallurgical properties. This paper will examine the similarities and differences in the evolution of pellet microstructure for pellets produced from magnetite and haematite. The molten slag phase generated at high temperatures has a lower melting point when in contact with magnetite compared with haematite due to the higher divalent iron content. The presence of some slag is beneficial for bonding but too much can inhibit oxidation of magnetite, although slag generation at lower temperatures reduces energy usage. In pellets produced from haematite, magnetite is generated artificially from the combustion of the carbon particles added to the pellet feed as a source of energy. Maintaining the optimum production level and mineralogy of such æsecondaryÆ magnetite, allowing for its subsequent reoxidation, is important for the quality of haematite pellets. In both magnetite and haematite pellets, balancing the slag formation and oxidation (re-oxidation for haematite pellets) of the magnetite (secondary magnetite for haematite pellets) is necessary.

I offer some comments which might complement the valuable recent paper by De Angelis et al (1987), on the newly discovered nickel-copper deposit at Radio Hill.The authors have accepted subdivisions and correlations by Hickman (1977, 1983) although they are disputed (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986).Also, in my opinion, more plausible correlations of the Sholl Belt with Whim Creek Belt have been shown, but not discussed, in Hudson and Horwitz (1986, Figure 1). Our suggested correlations and subdivisions have appeared in publications and reports which are not readily available, but it is gratifying to note that many of the observations and conclusions of De Angelis et al are consistent with our conclusions of the Whim Creek Belt.The units of the Sholl Belt (of Hickman, 1983), between the Sholl Fault (Shear Zone) and the overlying Mt Bruce Supergroup to the south, equate well with units of the Whim Creek Belt. A basalt, characterised by an abundance of vesicles and similar in many ways to the Wararnbi Basalt of Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (I975), is well developed at the base of the succession, particularly in the southern part of the area (Figure 1). It is overlain by acid tuffs (locally metamorphosed, such as at Whundoo Mine) and associated acid and mafic lavas, similar to those of the Mons Cupri area. The mafics in the succession are marked by the absence of the numerous cherty sedimentary intercalations, such as the Marble Bar Chert, which occur in the Warrawoona Group; and they also lack the intense chertification that is prevalent in all parts of the proven areas of Warrawoona Group rocks.The Whim Creek Group is overlain, locally unconformably (two to three km east of Mount Negri), by the Negri Volcanics which include here the Louden Volcanics (unit Abu of Hickman, 1977), (Horwitz, 1979). The negri volcanics are an alternating sequence of variolitic and quench textured lavas not dissimilar to the highest units of the Sholl Belt (Figure 1). They range from high-Mg basalt to tholeitic andesites (Glikson et al, 1986, pp 79 and 84). The whole succession of the Sholl Belt is estimated to be of the order of four km in thickness, more consistent with the two km thick (Horwitz, 1979, Figure 1) Whim Creek area sequence than with the much thicker Warrawoona Group sequences. The Whim Creek Group (including the Negri Volcanics) is considered to be a widespread grouping (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1976; Horwitz, 1979; Horwitz and Guj, 1986) which is prevalent in the northern part of the Pilbara Craton. It is considered by these authors to include the Mallina Formation turbidites of the trough area of Ryan (1965). One component, the Mons Cupri Volcanic, is about 2.95 Ga (Richards and Blockley, 1984). Between the Sholl Fault and Egina, the Whim Creek Group is intruded by large ultrarnafic to granophyric ills of the Millindinna Complex (Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester, 1975), dated at 2.860 ± 002 Ga by Gulson and Korsh (1983) near the Sherlock River (south side of Caines Well Granite area). The Millindinna Complex has been equated to the same magmatic episode as the layered complexes of the Sholl Belt by Fitton, Horwitz and Sylvester (1975, p 20).

Gekko Systems has developed an underground pre-concentration plant (Python) to reduce mine operating costs. Many ores liberate favourably using either high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical shaft impactors (VSI). Using these comminution circuits for mineral liberation; rather than for the final recovery process and by utilising a high mass pull, high recovery process route (gravity/flotation), a narrow, low head, compact processing plant was developed that can sensibly be operated underground. The Python underground processing plant can provide a number of advantages for narrow vein mines including lower haulage costs, improved mine call factor and lower operating costs. The focus on fine crushing reduces the power requirement of the plant to approximately 8 kWh/tonne. The Python underground processing plant has been designed to be towed down the decline or lowered down a shaft, and is capable of being installed in sloping, non-linear drives for placement close to the working face. The overall benefit to mining companies of this concept has been estimated to be a saving in mining costs and a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake, The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18.6 lb xÇ20 per 100 lb dry coal), additions of 0.045 lb magnesium ion, 0.0026 lb separan A.P. 30, and 0.098 lb aerosol O.T., per 100 lb dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

Seeking to reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled personnel entry into the operating footprint of a dragline, Coronado Global Resources initiated a review of proximity detection systems currently available and equipment interactions in and around dragline operational areas. At the time of the assessment, there were no established personnel proximity detection systems in compliance with functional safety standards for large machinery in Australia. Our primary objective was to guarantee a functionally safe outcome, particularly by implementing a performance-level-rated system in accordance with AS4024 (Safety of Machinery series of Australian Standards). Applying appropriate detection technologies, the goal was to reduce the residual operating risk for machine-to-machine and machine-to-personnel interactions. A comprehensive analysis of available or in-development technologies was conducted, and a layered approach (demonstrated in Figure 1) was adopted to achieve the desired risk reduction by segregating the sensing zones into distinct areas using diverse and disparate technologies consisting of radar (short); light detection and ranging (LiDAR) (medium); and optical (long). To address the potential limitations of each technology, overlapping layered sensing zones were designed. With LIDAR and optical using two distinct artificial intelligence (AI) systems to classify detections, these were specifically trained to handle the unique environments of a mining operation.

Mining has long been an important activity for the people of Australia. The Aboriginals used rocks and minerals in their culture many thousand years before European settlement. It was not until 1840 that silver-lead ore was discovered in the Mount Lofty Ranges, and developed as Australia's first metalliferous mine.

Fleet management systems have been adopted by many open pit mines throughout the world and the resulting improvement in truck cycle times has been one of the most significant contributors to mine efficiency. Ongoing enhancements to fleet management systems such as interfaces for vital signs monitoring have given incremental efficiency gains. Each incremental improvement is another step towards a grand vision of a totally automated mine. A relatively new fleet management system is being integrated with two other technologies to provide a highly reliable platform for a networked information system which monitors mine machinery and production. The paper reviews the integration project, the features of the new mine site information network platform and the contribution to productivity and safety. The new fleet management system has a predictive truck dispatch algorithm. It also has a distributed database that replicates rapidly so that each machine in the fleet has an identical database, thereby making each machine aware of other machinesÆ locations on the site. High precision systems for navigating and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels provide individual machine operators with cockpit style real-time information to increase their operational efficiency. The integration of the new fleet management systems capabilities with the high precision systems that provide production information, machine vital signs data and operator information means that the mine operations and maintenance managers have real-time access to the whole mine siteÆs production data. Such a mine monitoring and reporting system is dependent on reliable wireless communications and reliable positions. Positions in fleet management and high precision systems for open pit mines are usually provided by global positioning system (GPS). Other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as Glonass, and in the future Galileo, will provide additional satellite cover; however, some parts of open pit mines do not have enough sky visibility for reliable GNSS positioning and so a new centimetre level wireless positioning system called Locata is being integrated with the fleet and high precision systems to augment and backup the GNSS positions. The final integrated system will provide the highest levels of reliable position-based information to all stakeholders in a mineÆs operation, ensuring gains in productivity and safety.

The goal of the life-of-mine plan is to ensure that while the site is left safe, stable and non-polluting, the landscape is such that optimal use can be made of the site post-mining and closure. However, in the face of evolving shareholder expectations and the current international economic climate, numerous mines are ceasing operations and moving into a care and maintenance phase. These changes bring with them a high degree of community concern, not only about the potential legacy of closed operations, but also those mines that continue to operate.While mines across Australia are committed from the earliest planning stage to develop clearly defined post-mining land use and landform objectives, broader expectations related to these objectives may change and evolve during the life of the operation. This is especially the case where a mining operation has a project approval where the land use objectives are aligned to land capability and land use commensurate to that which occurred premining.
