Not so many years ago the reason for an inadequate result from a geophysical survey was insufficient data or poor quality data. In many instances such as gravity, magnetic and radiometric surveys, both these constraints are vanishing or have vanished. High quality sensors, improved data storage, accurate differential GPS and top quality interpretive software now enable the interpreter to understand not just the cause of the anomaly but the host environment in which it resides. Examples of potential field data and also data provided by the more complex electromagnetic systems, from Australia Ghana, West Africa, are used as illustrations.

Oaky Creek Coal (OCC) has embarked on an ambitious program to fast track the introduction of Trench Mining into its current mining operations. The project has the capacity to allow the extraction of reserves at stripping ratios, uneconomical by conventional mining methods.Trench mining using Continuous Highwall Mining (CHM) technology reduces the in-situ stripping ratio to 4:3; compared with a stripping ratio of 20:1 using conventional mining techniques.

A viable flow sheet of the sorption-flotation technology for gold recovery from low-grade ores and concentrates using powdered activated carbon modified by organic compounds as the sorbent-bearer has been developed. The powdered activated carbon, with high kinetic ability and sufficient specific area, was selected as the all-purpose gold cyanide complex-bearing sorbent which is active during flotation. To improve carbon adsorption capacity and to provide the required floatability its porous structure was filled with a quaternary ammonium compound which can extract gold cyanide complexes and render additional flotation properties to the carbon. To optimise the process and to simplify the layout, adsorption and flotation processes were carried out simultaneously in a mechanical flotation cell. The proposed technology was used for extended and pilot-plant tests of sorption-flotation gold recovery from 0.6 g/t Au final tailings and 2.0 g/t Au gravity tailings. The extended tests were carried out on Taseevskaya (Chita Region) flotation tailings, whereas pilot-plant tests were conducted on Kommunarovskaya (Krasnoyarsk Region) gravity tailings passing to cyanidation, followed by processing with filtration technology. Additional gold recovery from Taseevskaya final flotation tailings was 50.8 per cent. Gold recovery from Kommunarovskaya final gravity tailings was 92.5 per cent. Compared to the complete sludge process conventionally used at the plant, gold recovery was increased by 7.5 per cent due to lower gold losses in the liquid phase and conversion of the refractory non-cyanided metal into a carbon concentrate. This paper presents the experimental results of gold adsorption onto powdered activated carbon modified with quaternary ammonium compounds (sorbent-bearer) as well as sorbent-bearer flotation with various collectors from cyanide solutions and pulps.

Century is a shale hosted zinc, lead, silver deposit developed within gently folded, Proterozoic Lawn Hill Formation shales and siltstones, approximately 250 kilometres north-northwest of Mount Isa, comprising 118 million tonnes of stratiform mineralisation, averaging 10.2 per cent ,,inc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. The deposit is largely overlain by Cambrian limestone and younger Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, outcropping at only two places. Small discordant lode lead-silver deposits formed the basis of relatively small scale mining activity in the area for almost 100 years, exploration tenement covering the deposit being granted to CRAE exactly 100 years after the first mining leases were pegged in the area in 1887.Stratiform mineralisation occurs within three distinct blocks, bounded by normal faults and the unconformity between Lawn Hill Formation and overlying Cambrian limestones. The Termite Range Fault, a major northwest trending, regional scale fault system occurs adjacent to the northeast deposit boundary, while the Magazine Hill Fault, possibly a component of the east trending Little Range Fault system, forms the southern boundary of the deposit.

BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A better location for a cement works could not well have been chosen. On the east side of the island there is a deep channel, which never shows less than 18 ft. of water alongside the company's...

This paper presents a quantitative assessment model for the assessment of environmental load in gold production, which is based on environmental ecology, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and artificial neural network. In LCA evaluation indexes include resource consumption, energy consumption, gas waste, liquid waste, solid waste and so on. Each item represents an aspect in gold production while their combination reflects the relationship between gold production and environment. In this paper an utility function of evolution index on environmental load is given by linear or non-linear transformation, which changes evaluation indexes with different dimension into an equivalent value in range of [-1, 1]. This paper also provides a new approach to make decision on the weight for quantitative assessment with the help of a three-layered artificial neural network. The proposed approach in this paper has been successfully used to a real synthetic assessment for the environmental load in gold production, which include seven kinds of different operational technologies in China. The applications prove that the new approach is successful and reliable. It provides a new tool for the assessment of environmental load of the gold production.

The process of excavating and mining coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata. The fractures provide pathways for gas released from coal seams and other gas-bearing strata to flow into the mine workings. Coal seam gas typically contains high concentrations of methane with lesser concentrations of carbon dioxide. Low concentrations of other gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and ethane may also be present in some coal seams. In certain geological settings, particularly in close proximity to geological structures, such as faults and dykes, the concentration of gases contained in a coal seam can vary significantly between methane-rich to carbon dioxide-rich.In mine design and planning it is vital that mining engineers gather sufficient information to accurately determine the content and composition of the gas present in the coal seam and develop an understanding of changes in these parameters within the planned mining area.The longwall method of mining coal causes fracturing of the overlying and underlying strata behind the retreating longwall face. Where coal seams and other gas-bearing strata are present within the caving zone, gas will be released from the strata leading to contamination of the mine workings. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the mine ventilation, the concentration of gas in the mine may exceed the statutory limit, resulting in production delays and potentially unsafe conditions.CITATION:Black, D J, 2016. The Dachang tin field with more than one hundred million tonnes of ore at 1% tin and 3% Zn is one of the largest tin fields in the world. It comprises five carbonate replacement tin deposits, of which the Changpo deposit containing about 80 million tonnes of ore at about 1% tin is the largest deposit. The deposit, hosted by middle Devonian limestone, argillaceous limestone and black shale, is genetically related to the Longxianggei granite.The oxygen, hydrogen and carbon isotope data of minerals, rocks and fluids suggest a magmatic fluid which evolved during the crystallization of the Longxianggei granite. Mass balance calculations show that the depletions observed in 180 and 13C values of calcites from the ore bodies to the country rocks were due to continous isotopic exchange reactions between the magmatic fluid and the marine limestones at different W/R ratios and between 300 and 600¦C.

A background characterisation study was carried out in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, New Mexico, to: quantify naturally occurring contaminant loads from mineralised areas; define site-specific background concentrations; and to determine key factors controlling spatial and temporal variations in contaminant concentrations. The study included a comprehensive sampling and testing program (paste pH/EC, ABA, leach extraction tests) of soil/bedrock from mineralised areas (including erosional scars), and a ground water and surface water quality monitoring program in selected mineralised watersheds. Results demonstrate that high concentrations of contaminants occur naturally in ground and surface water draining the mineralised area of the Red River basin. The erosional scars were found to represent the major source of acid rock drainage (ARD) (~66 per cent) in this area due to: high rates of weathering and erosion, which continually exposes sulfide-bearing outcrops; and high rates of run-off as a result of high elevation and lack of vegetation. The scar material is generally very acidic (paste pH ranges from 8.5 to 1.5; average = 3.6) with highly elevated concentrations of sulfate and leachable metals. The composition and concentration of leachable metals vary significantly, not only between scars but also within a given scar. While all streams draining the various scar watersheds are highly acidic, each has a characteristic æfingerprintÆ of sulfate and metal concentrations. Most of the run-off from the scars infiltrates into alluvial debris flow aprons and reaches the Red River via groundwater flow.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

It has always been a challenge to accelerate the underground development progress by increasing the advance rate of each development round. Surveys have shown that most of the development rounds have only been pulled 84 per cent to 94 per cent of the drilled length. Where bare detonators have been used as primers, less advance rate is expected. In order to obtain a good understanding of the influence of priming upon the advance rate in underground development, a series of high energy primer trials has been conducted by Orica Explosives in the goldfields using various types of Orica high energy Anzomex « primers. It has been shown that development face has been pulled an extra 140 mm to 420 mm by priming with Anzomex « K primers compared with conventional primers. From all the trials at different sites, we have seen that the face pulled using K primers was more square than that pulled using conventional primers. Virtually, no butts and toe were left on the face developed using K primers. Computer simulation has been conducted using either a conventional primer, a bare detonator or a K primer as initiator. The study compared the predicted crack patterns developed around the toe of the hole and it was deducted that a detonator-initiated hole would leave a butt some 200 mm longer than that from a conventional primer-initiated hole, and a K primer-initiated blasthole would give rise to stronger initial p-wave, promoting crack development around the toe and increasing the ability to pull close to the full depth.

Teller Underground Mine was established to extract ore from the Middle Vale Reef located on the eastern flank of Telfer Main Dome.The mine is located below a 150 m deep open pit operation. The ore body is shallow dipping highly structured, and is a main aquifer in quite difficult ground conditions.In respect of these conditions it was determined to access the orebody using an adaptation of coal mining and hard rock mining methods, with support being achieved using a combination of island pillars, rock bolts and timber stalls.The paper will describe these methods in more detail, then discuss the successes and failures of these methods when put into practice. As well, it will detail several factors whose influences were found to be greater than previously expected and stress the importance of good geotechnical advice.

This paper describes the technical aspects of plant operating and reagent practices employed, with particular emphasis on the large scale milling of this product and the effect through the use of reagent hydroxy ethyl cellulose on chalcocite grade and recovery.

Copper-gold deposits associated with iron oxide rich rocks (ironstones) form a distinctive and significant ore association which occurs widely, but not exclusively, in the Proterozoic. The ironstone association is geochemically distinct from the BIF-hosted gold association (Phillips and Groves, 1983). Not only is the former association higher in its copper and commonly uranium, FEE, ¦bismuth, molybdenum contents, but also the ironstones in many cases do not originate as chemical sediments. Although both associations form in metamorphic environs, they reflect differing tectonostratigraphic settings and with consequent differences in ore-forming fluids and ore-forming mechanisms. This paper discusses the nature and origin of the ironstone-related copper-gold association, with particular reference to the Tennant Creek district in northern Australia, and emphasises the two stage origin of mineralisation. The genetic model developed has significant implications for other ore-bearing environments.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. This paper describes the effects of physical variables in dewatering of mineral slurries with air as the filtrate displacing medium. Using a mathematical model with material related constants measured in laboratory dewatering curves are simulated for vacuum and pressure filtration. Four different mineral slurries are studied. Basic dewatering curves with variation in air-pressure are shown with iso-energy lines. Variables such as air pressure, feed concentration, cake thickness and cake formation pressure are discussed.

The paper summarises the theoretical and experimental studies which led to the development of new industrial equipment designed to recover liberated gold from placer gravity concentrates. The new technology is based on environmentally clean magnetic methods, which avoids use of mercury in the production process and obtains higher gold recoveries compared to the amalgamation technique, and which can reach 98.6 - 99.5 per cent. The complex of equipment thus developed is now commercially used at nine Russian gold mining operations. Six more such complexes are due to come on stream in 1993, some of them outside the CIS. The new technology appears to hold much promise for the recovery of precious stones (diamonds, rubies etc) semi-precious stones (pyropes, chrysolites etc) and also artificial diamonds, for which case there are encouraging laboratory results.
