The Kanowna Belle gold mine in Western Australia has reached a depth of 1000 m on the way to 1300 m. A feasibility study undertaken in 2006 identified the mining of E-Block as both technically and commercially feasible. One of the major risks identified in the study was the ventilation capacity, as the existing primary ventilation system would not support the production schedule for mining and a major system upgrade would be required. Failure to provide the necessary airflow would put the project at risk. A review of the airflow requirements and infrastructure options detailed in the feasibility study was undertaken to ensure that the assumptions and design were optimised. This review recommended a minimum airflow of 206 m3/s, but by acknowledging the necessary constraints imposed by mining at depth and re-engineering the mine layout to optimise the primary ventilation circuit, this requirement was reduced to 160 m3/s. This represents a 22 per cent reduction in airflow and a reduction in capital cost that will see mining at depth become economically feasible at Kanowna Belle. This paper discusses the processes that led to a redesign of the mining layout and highlights the importance of including the ventilation network in the optimisation process.

A simple gravimetric procedure was developed for the rapid determination of carbon dioxide in coal mine roadway dust samples and the result is used for the subsequent calculation of incombustible matter contentaccording to the requirements of the Queensland Coal Mining Act. The carbon dioxide is determined through loss of mass by a semi-enclosed apparatus, following room-temper.ature hydrochloric acid attack on the sample.With a sample containing 36 per cent carbon dioxide, the achieved standard deviation (ls) of 0·3 per cent CO. is adequate for coal mine roadway dust analysis.This simple procedure enables relatively unskilled labour in mine laboratories, to analyze coal mine roadway dust samples in accordance with the Act. Some 50 analyses can be achieved per day compared with 8 by the Australian Standard Method for coal.

"The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Coal burst is defined as a dynamic release of energy within the rock or coal mass in underground coalmines that causes violent rock or coal ejection in the vicinity of mine excavations. It poses one of the highest safety and productivity risks in the mining industry as coal bursts have the potential to cause multiple fatalities. As Australian coalmines go deeper, the likelihood of coal burst increases. Thus, it is critical to assess the ground support requirements in coal burst-prone conditions. A previous study conducted by the authors (Wei et al, 2022) reviewed the support capacities of a wide range of ground support elements in laboratory tests. This study aims to examine the role and effects of the ground support elements and systems for Australian underground coalmines to minimise the damage caused by catastrophic dynamic failures (ie coal and rock burst) and enhance the safety of mine workers.

In today’s mining environment the use of heavy mechanical devices and other high-tech electronic devices like two-way radios, cellular phones and even automated mining systems, form a vital part of the daily operations of a mining site. These human-made devices and some of the naturally occurring events, like lightning and gamma radiation, can have negative effects on electronic detonators and the associated control equipment.On larger mining operations the necessity to move the point of safety for blasting further away from the blast area, introduced remote firing via radio frequencies for electronic detonator systems. Other influences on electronic detonators can be abuse or ignorance. To ensure the safety of the end-user, an electronic detonator must be resistant to some common mistakes that users can make. One of main concerns here is resistance to static discharge or incorrect wiring. Despite the daily use of electronic detonator solutions, scepticism and concern still exists amongst those who believe the system raises the risk of a premature initiation of the blast through some form of interference trigger.This paper will help users understand how electronic detonators and the associated control equipment protects itself from external influences. Focus will be on protection schemes to counter static and over-voltage discharge and methods to ensure protection of secure wireless radio links and detonator communications. With well engineered communication systems and solid static and over-voltage protection, an electronic detonator system can be more reliable and safer than other detonator systems. The following main points will be discussed:what makes a detonator an electronic detonator,static electricity and over-voltage protection,the general influence of electromagnetic energy on the detonator,the influence of lightning on detonators,the protection of radio communication’s links as used by remote firing equipment, andthe safety protection features built into remote firing equipment.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the basic policy problems for good community relations programmes in the resource extraction industries of Papua New Guinea. The main focus of the paper will be on defining and analysing those problems which lie on the landowner side and which are still not widely understood within the resource extraction industries despite several decades of turbulent experience. Many of the companies operating in the resource extraction industries of mining and petroleum and gas have in recent decades adopted, by choice or necessity, 'good corporate citizen' policies. Some of these companies now pursue ethical business, environmental and community relations policies. Some have adequately funded and well-trained staff in their community relations departments. Although different industry sites scattered over Papua New Guinea show significant differences in their experience of social conflict, I argue here that a good deal of this variation has less to do with the differences between the companies' public relations policies and their effectiveness and more to do with the conflict causing features of indigenous society. Experience suggests that even a company well-equipped with good intentions, good policies and good staff may experience serious difficulties in maintaining good community relations in Papua New Guinea. Many of these difficulties, I argue, can be traced to causes that lie, essentially, within the structure of Papua New Guinean communities and in the customs and social relations of Papua New Guinean peoples. Accordingly the attention of this paper is focussed on the conflict causing aspects of Papua New Guinean society. It is true, to the point of being a cliche, that Papua New Guinean societies are oriented very strongly towards achieving consensus and social harmony. In this regard Papua New Guinean communities differ significantly from, say, Australian communities. My purpose here is not to denigrate this aspect of Papua New Guinean societies but, rather, to point out that the drive for consensus is driven by the desire to avoid its opposite, dissensus. This paper sets out to define the dissensual aspects of Papua New Guinean societies and my special interest is in those conflict producing aspects of Papua New Guinean societies that are most resistant to the mechanisms that are designed to create social harmony. A survey of the recent history of industry and community relations in Papua New Guinea indicates that there are three main factors present on the landowner side which are liable, separately or through their interaction, to cause difficulties. These factors are respectively generational challenge, social boundaries and custom variability and I shall discuss each of these in turn.

This paper presents a phenomena-based model for investigating the possibility of scrap melting in an Open Slag Bath Furnace (OSBF) for green ironmaking. The goal of this study is to enhance the circularity of the steelmaking process by utilising scrap as a green source of iron in OSBFs. The model takes into account the fundamental differences between OSBFs and traditional processes such as Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOFs). The model considers three primary regions where scrap heating and melting occur: the solid feed pile, slag and hot metal. It accounts for factors such as the furnace geometry, scrap charging mechanism and specific heat and mass transfer properties of the reactor. The model was validated using literature data and was used to investigate the heating and melting behaviour of individual scrap particles under various process parameters. The study finds that the scrap melting process in OSBFs involves three stages: shell formation, shell remelting and subsequent melting of the parent scrap. The carbon content of the scrap and the liquid hot metal plays a critical role in determining the melting behaviour. Depending on the carbon concentration and temperature, the melting process can be heat transfer controlled or mass transfer controlled. The paper also examines the scrap feeding methods in OSBFs, including direct charging into the slag or charging through a feed pile. The model provides insights into the melting rate of scrap compared to Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in OSBFs and highlights the role of carbon in this process. Overall, this phenomena-based model contributes to the understanding of scrap melting behaviour in OSBFs and provides valuable insights for optimising the circularity and efficiency of green ironmaking processes. The findings of this study can inform the design and operation of OSBFs, paving the way for increased utilisation of scrap as a sustainable feedstock in the steel industry.

It is generally acknowledged that bulk ore sorting is an attractive prospect for the mining industry. However, uncertainties relating to the operational performance of sensor technologies, the grade heterogeneity present in analysed material and the physical separation performance of the coupled system complicate the evaluation and deployment of bulk ore sorting strategies at operations. To assist in the quantification of these uncertainties, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and Anglo American have implemented a systematic methodology to evaluate the deployment of sensor technologies for bulk ore sorting. This methodology was implemented at a bulk ore sorting demonstration plant using penetrative prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) and surface x-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements of base metals, as a proxy for precious metals, at Mogalakwena PGE Mine. The methodology comprises of three phases. The initial phase involves the preliminary investigation of sensor technologies and analysis to reduce identified risks prior to commissioning of the bulk ore sorting plant. The second phase executes a series of experiments to prove the sensing technologies in the operational environment and provide confidence the sensors can drive separation. The final phase demonstrates the production scale bulk ore sorting performance of the plant and validates its performance by campaign of the sorted products at the processing plant. Throughout the operational deployment and evaluation of bulk ore sorting at Mogalakwena, several key lessons were learned. These learnings relate to the calibration requirements of the sensor technologies, the application of surface vs penetrative sensor techniques and the preservation of grade heterogeneity delivered to the sensors. This paper presents the methodology used, and lessons learned, in the operational deployment and evaluation of PGNAA and XRF sensors for bulk ore sorting at Mogalakwena PGE Mine.

Mobile robots have been making impressive inroads in a variety of domains. Within the Mining-RoX project, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is exploring a further frontier for mobile and autonomous robots: underground mines. The potential benefits of mobile robots in underground mining are plentiful as underground mines are strenuous and potentially dangerous working environments for humans. A higher degree of automation, with robots either acting as helpers for human miners or even replacing all human personnel deployed underground, could help to significantly reduce mining costs. In disaster cases, rescue robots could help to find missing personnel. Unmanned mines operated by robots alone would not endanger human lives at all. Further use cases, and a particular focus of the Mining-RoX project, are mobile robots that gather sensory information of the underground mine (eg for the purpose of creating detailed 2D and 3D maps) as well as monitoring environmental conditions such as air and water quality. This paper presents the design of a prototypical mobile robot for mapping and monitoring underground mines. A generic robotic platform was extended with various 2D and 3D imaging devices as well as other sensors. First results from test runs in an underground mine are reported. The Iron Bridge magnetite mine and infrastructure project is currently in development as a joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group, Formosa and Baosteel. It is supported by an extensive database of reverse circulation drill hole samples analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), with a large subset tested for concentrate mass recovery, concentrate and tail grades by Davis tube recovery (DTR) testing. A limited number of rock physical testing results, including unconfined/uniaxial compressive strength and crushing work index, completes the database.By combining all available information – assays, DTR results, geology, stratigraphy, mineralogy and rock physical results – and using multivariate statistical analysis techniques, the impact of the critical factors that control concentrate quality, mass recovery and grindability characteristics have been outlined. A set of geochemical groups was created by using a cluster analysis technique from the combined XRF-DTR data. These groups allow optimal separation of material with consistently high concentrate Fe grades and mass recovery. This approach is superior to domaining based on stratigraphic logging or mass recovery as it is commonly used in standard magnetite estimation models. Using the results of a normative mineralogy study, the main geochemical groups were given a mineralogical profile fitting their geochemical characteristics. These findings further refined the understanding of the link between the process characteristics of the samples and their geochemical signature and mineralogy.The geochemical grouping defined on head grades and DTR concentrate mass recovery was generalised into a ‘geomet’ code based solely on the routinely assayed head grades, thus bypassing the need for systematic DTR testing. The geomet code identifies spatial domains with homogeneous geochemistry, mineralogy and process characteristics in both oxide and fresh material that form the basis of the current Iron Bridge resource model. The allocation of geometallurgical characteristics in terms of concentration amenability and concentrate characteristics on a block-by-block basis over the whole project allows for an optimum mine schedule and plant feed. This ensures that the desired concentrate characteristics and mass recovery can be better predicted over the life-of-mine, thereby improving the mine’s economics and stability by derisking the mine schedule and optimising the performance of the concentrators. A key benefit of the geomet code devised for the Iron Bridge mine is that it can be attributed in an automated manner to all samples analysed for a routine XRF analytical suite, from exploration to blasthole drilling. This allows each sample to be allocated to a geometallurgical material type with predictable process response in terms of concentrate mass recovery and concentrate quality without the need to complete systematic DTR testing.A standard multivariate analysis coupled with a cluster analysis has allowed the linking of interdisciplinary results between geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, process and metallurgy to better understand, predict and ultimately mine and process the Iron Bridge deposits. The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

Magnetite ore blending has yielded signifi cant performance improvements in OneSteel’s magnetite concentrator. The magnetite concentrator beneficiates magnetite ore from the Iron Magnet Deposit and produces concentrate, which is pelletised, then fed to the OneSteel Whyalla blast furnace. Concentrator feed variability severely detracts from the concentrator’s performance, affecting both concentrate yield and grade, which impacts on all downstream processing costs.A coordinated approach has integrated mine planning, geological modelling and grade control, to minimise concentrator feed variability, through effective ore blending throughout the mining and stockpiling process.Mine planning personnel design shots that extend the full width of the orebody and hence across the stratigraphic profi le. Based on geological information contained in block-outs and in consultation with Geology, the Grade Control team allocates material to each primary stockpile, potentially from every stratigraphic domane in the orebody. This ensures primary stockpiles are designed with maximum practical homogeneity and consistency.Using only primary movement, the allocated ore is stockpiled in a layer-cake fashion. The ore is pimple dumped across the width of the stockpile footprint and on completion of a layer, it is dozed flat with an access ramp that allows dumping to commence on the next lift. The primary stockpiles are reclaimed normal to build direction and the magnetite is crushed, all in, to a concentrator feed stockpile.The ore is sampled at the crusher from a falling stream cut. These assay data, are used for benchmarking and control charting the grade and variability of concentrator feed stockpiles. The concentrator feed stockpiles have demonstrated a statistically signifi cant reduction of within pile variation, between pile variation and pile to pile variation, primarily attributable to the development of ore blending. The concentrator has seen sustained, improved performance as a direct result, which translates into lower concentrate cost per tonne and improved yield and quality.

Bulk ore sorting technologies, whether surfaced based or penetrative, have seen an increased uptake by the mining industry for preconcentration application. As with all technologies, going through the technology validation process is key to de-risking the operationalisation of the technologies and to demonstrate and confirm predicted value propositions. The ability to laboratory calibrate cross-belt bulk sensors is standard practise for sensor vendors, however transitioning the technology from laboratory to real-world application is a non-trivial process. The industry has taken two main approaches to trialling and validating bulk sensing technologies in operational environments, namely:  Construct an off-line pilot facility at scale, or  Install bulk sensing systems on production conveyors Each of these two approaches have significant advantages and disadvantages and require different experimental design programs and analysis methodologies. Consideration of material movement, heterogeneity degradation, logistical requirements, and financial investment all factor into which approach is most suitable for an evaluation scenario. CRC ORE in partnership with mining companies, have conducted several bulk sensor pilot trials utilising different sensor technologies employing each of the two main approaches outlined above. This paper describes the challenges faced, learnings obtained and outlines a position on how to transition bulk sensing technologies from the laboratory into the operating environment. The case studies presented cover a range of commodity types in both open pit and underground operations.

The need for the hydraulic transportation of coal in the New South Wales coal industry, both from the coal face to the surface and from the coal mine to the consumer or the port for export, is explained. Details of research projects currently in progress and involving the hydraulic transportation of New South Wales coals are given together with information on the hydraulic transportation of coal in the United States of America. The potential of hydraulic transportation as a viable alternative to the proposed expansion and upgrading of the New South Wales railway system to meet the projected New South Wales coal production to the year 2000 is described.

Surface oxidation of sulfide minerals, such as that found in the regions of a sulfide ore body near the water table, can have a significant impact upon flotation. This theme has been explored for Merensky ore type sulfides where an ore containing pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite was thermally oxidised and the role of potential remedies investigated. Back-scattered scanning electron microscope images are presented showing the oxidation layer which formed in the mineral surfaces. These oxidation layers were depleted in both sulfur and iron with incorporated oxygen. Flotation recovery rapidly decreased with increasing oxidation, particularly after 27 days and reached a plateau after 50 days. Up to 27 days, this effect could be partially overcome with higher collector additions. Oxidation had more impact upon the finer size fractions, particularly for pyrrhotite. For more heavily surface oxidised samples, ultrasonic treatment prior to collector conditioning was found to improve flotation recoveries. This treatment had the greatest effect upon chalcopyrite particles. Sulfidisation was successful in restoring the flotation recovery of the heavily oxidised sulfide minerals. Longer sulfidisation conditioning times were not conducive to good flotation recoveries of both oxidised pyrrhotite and pentlandite due to oxidation of the freshly formed sulfide surfaces. For maximum flotation recoveries of oxidised pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, different sulfidisation conditions are indicated. It appears likely that in a mineral processing operation treating oxidised Merensky type ores, two stages of sulfidisation employing different conditions would be required.

Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Current control practice is reviewed for agglomeration processes, including pelletising, sintering and induration; and for smelting processes, including blast and reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting, the intensive bath smelting processes together with converting. The importance of sensors for on-line control and the status of mathematical modelling is discussed.Future progress in automatic control will require improved component specific sensors and the use of validated mathematical models running in parallel with the process. The possibilities in both these areas are reviewed in light of the trends towards more intensive smelting processes.

The magmatic arcs of SE Asia and SW Pacific contain some of the worldÆs major magmatic-hydrothermal gold deposits. Most gold deposits in SE Asian and SW Pacific arcs formed during periods of plate reorganisation rather than during periods of normal or steady state subduction. These plate reorganisations were caused initially by the collisions of the Australian Craton with the Philippines-Halmahera Arc and the Ontong Java Plateau with the Melanesian Arc at ~25 Ma. A second Mid-Miocene period of mineralisation accompanied plate reorganisation following maximum rotation or extrusion of Indochina and cessation of spreading in the South China Sea at ~17 Ma. However, the vast majority of deposits from New Zealand to Taiwan formed since 7 Ma during an important period of tectonic reorganisation that accompanied and followed changes in the relative motion between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates between ~8 and 3.5 Ma. Magmatism in unusual tectonic settings produced the most abundant and largest deposits with many deposits associated with high-K calc-alkaline, shoshonite, adakite and alkaline magmatism. In particular peak mineralisation appears related to melting of sub-arc lithosphere that has been previously modified by subduction. During large-scale plate reorganisation this can occur towards or at the end of a period of normal subduction, following arc collision or accompanying subduction reversal at approximately the same time in different parts of a complex system of arcs such as in SE Asia and the SW Pacific.

A research project to better understand the rock mass behaviour and the seismic response has been conducted during the design and construction of the 9215 level at the E-Block sector of the Northern Star Kanowna Belle Mine. The research program was undertaken at a tunnel located 1100 m below the surface with the results applicable to feasibility studies on underground mining projects in highstress conditions, where failure can occur very soon after tunnel construction. Semi-circular excavation shapes coupled with the use of de-stress blasting techniques were designed to monitor the excavation in conditions of very high stress. The ground support was designed considering high energy dissipation ground support schemes (HED) as described by Arcaro et al (2021). The results indicate a decreased rock mass demand due to the change of excavation shape. Also, localised reduction in rock mass stiffness was achieved due to the implementation of de-stress blasting. Finally, increased ground support capacity was gained by the implementation of the high energy dissipation ground support schemes. The Kanowna Belle Mine has significant ore reserves at depths exceeding 1000 m below the surface. The results of this research will be used to optimise the extraction of the remaining E Stoping Block at depths exceeding 1350 m.
