"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. "To provide an indication of expected performance of the mine and mill, feasibility studies should include an assessment of the expected day-to-day variability in process plant feed. Attempts to do this based on conventional resource models will be flawed as such studies fail to consider and account for the in-built smoothing (averaging) of input data.This can lead to one of two situations: an expensive, over-engineered process plant that can cope with every possible situation, or operational strategies that fail to manage the natural variability within the orebody and the impact of day-to-day operational decision-making.In both cases the value of the project diminishes through excessive capital costs or reduced throughput or recovery during operations.Unlike conventional estimation techniques, the geostatistical method of conditional simulation can reproduce the inherent variability of the deposit. Once a valid model has been developed, it is possible to analyse the model using a transfer function that simulates the proposed mining processes and provides a representation of the likely variation of mill feed characteristics at any time scale.The case study demonstrates how the proposed mining strategy would result in mill feed being considerably more variable than expected, resulting in poor recovery, low throughput and potential breaches of environmental conditions. "Large-scale mine reclamation has taken place recently in response to the implementation of mining regulations in China. Effective monitoring of the progress of reclaimed land is a critical procedure to assess the quality of reclamation program and to ensure that mining enterprises fulfill their reclamation responsibilities. The present paper reports a preliminary study that examines the situation of mine land reclamation monitoring. Based on the monitoring, some general requirements for mined land reclamation have been proposed, including: the monitoring should be systematic and comprehensive the monitoring should be adapted to specific local conditions the monitoring should be reasonably optimised via scientific methods and technology the monitoring should stick to a variety of national technical criteria.The aim of land reclamation monitoring is to evaluate changes of critical indicators closely reflecting the development trend of the reclaimed mined land, to develop or improve the criteria and technical parameters specific to the site, and to prevent secondary environmental degradation. Based on these requirements and aim, the monitoring should cover the progress of reclamation, establishment of vegetation and plant community development; and recovery of land and water quality in the reclamation area. Blastholes fired in a pattern with a constant initiation delay create a frequency in the ground vibration similar to that from a percussion instrument, such as a drum, in the air. A constant firing delay generates a prime or forcing frequency into the ground motion. The forcing frequency may then be modified by ground transmission characteristics into subharmonics of the forcing frequency. The moving vibration source between blastholes also creates a frequency shift because of a Doppler effect. Other wave interactions may form beats. The effects are exacerbated by the accurate firing times of electronic detonators. This paper demonstrates how observations of wavetraces and frequency spectral analysis were used to recognise:Doppler effect and frequency ellipsoidssubharmonics (and sub-subharmonics) of the forcing frequencybeat formation that may double or triple peak particle velocity (PPV) levels.Recognition of beats permitted techniques to be used to control ground vibration from coal overburden blasting to limits deemed to cause no further instability in a slip failure. Barra Bonita reservoir, located in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil, has been mainly used for local navigation and electricity generation to supply a prosper region in the country. Sand mining activities in that area have an important social and economic meaning for the local community. In this reservoir there are several sand mines that produce around 45 000 m3 of sand a month. These deposits were rich in material used as concrete aggregate in the civil construction. However, nowadays a significant increase in the demand of gravel can be observed, representing a serious productive problem. This material hasnÆt been well accepted by the market and, through the years, it was disposed at open sky in piles as waste deposits. This deposits have caused environmental problems like visual impact, reduction of free spaces outside and inside the mine, source of material to erosion and sedimentation processes in lower areas, flooding as a result of the filling up process in the drainage system, among others. For a lack of an appropriate technological characterisation, this material have been mainly used to pavement internal and external areas in the mine, with lower cost associated. With the purpose of evaluate the usefulness of this material in the conventional concrete, there were conducted several tests in the disposed residue including petrographical, physical, and chemical characterisation. The petrographical analysis and the preliminary results of the study showed that the material reacts with the alkalis that are present in the conventional cement (CP-II-E-32). In order to make the application technical and economically possible a research was developed seeking forms to correct this characteristic by adding special cements with high pozzolana content. The results of the technological, physical and chemical characterisation of the products indicated the technical viability of the use of that material. The study also allowed projecting environmental improvements resulting in the elimination of the waste piles.

Following the recent tailings tragedy in Brumadinho, the Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative was formed representing institutional investors in the mining industry. This Initiative, led by The Church of England (CoE), requested data from 726 mining companies on each of their Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). What this exercise confirmed was that there was no public database of TSFs, and that there was a clear gap in tailings management systems within the disclosing companies. We present an approach using technology to support best practice TSF management, governance and disclosure which was originally submitted as part of University of Cambridge Post-graduate studies in Sustainability Leadership in January 2020. The aim of the paper is to discuss how technology could be used to deliver a Tailings Management Solution (TMS) that is aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), and supports rigorous governance leading to disclosure. Subsequently the goals of the plan are aligned with that of the co-conveners of the GISTM (the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)) which is to facilitate operators’ trajectory towards zero harm to people and the environment. Most of the focus to date around tailings management post Brumadinho has been on monitoring technologies, of which there are many. It is obviously important to acknowledge the critical role of monitoring technologies; however, our approach is agnostic to monitoring technologies and assumes that all of them are relevant. Our focus is on the data management, reporting and governance leading to disclosure of the information. Critical components of developing the TMS include adapting existing software products and solutions, recognising a system thinking approach is needed, strategic partnerships to deliver an accessible solution faster and more cost effectively, and, new ways of collaborating. The TMS should also accommodate relevant regional geotechnical codes and standards. The industry need for a TMS is well established and urgent, with significant pressure from regulators and civil society for the industry to address this significant issue.

Reconciliation involves the collection of tonnage, grade (quality) and contained metal (product) data from disparate and hopefully independent sources. Examples are exploration data, production sampling data from blastholes or drawpoints, and process plant data. These data may be compared by means of ratios (factors). The F1 factor usually relates short-term (ore control) model tonnages, grades and metal content to ore reserves depleted. The F2 factor usually relates received-at-mill tonnages, grades and metal content to delivered-to-mill = production tonnages, grade and metal content. The F3 factor is F1 × F2 and enables a comparison of a mineÆs ability to recover the tonnage, grade and metal content estimated in ore reserves. The F1 factor measures the accuracy of orebody knowledge in the ore reserves to the demarcation of ore and waste by ore control (short-term model). The F1 factor may be used to check and calibrate the selectivity of mineral resource models and/or planned dilution assumed in transfer from mineral resources to ore reserves. The F2 factor enables a check on unplanned dilution entering the ore stream between ore control and the mill. Using the factors it is possible to calculate a monetary value on improvements in the accuracy of orebody knowledge, selectivity and the effects of dilution and ore loss. Reconciliation should be an implicit part of the mining process, and reconciliation targets should be a key performance indicator for well-run mines.

This paper describes a new methodology that can be applied to compare several bench extraction strategies requiring backfill. The method is applicable at the planning or operational stages and can be used to maintain dilution within design parameters and improve the overall economics of bench stoping operations. The parameters influencing bench performance have been empirically rated based on economical, geomechanical, operational and backfill properties. Four different extraction strategies have been considered and rated from most preferred to less preferred using an integrated approach to bench extraction.

Of the energy resources present in Australia, coal and uranium are by far the largest. These two resources ap- pear sufficient to satisfy Australia's energy needs beyond the immediately foreseeable future and long after the natural petroleum resources are exhausted or have ceased to play a significant role. By that time, coal could be converted in plants of very large size to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels which will be used as substitutes for pet- roleum fuels, particularly for transport. The basic role of uranium will be to supply electricity from nuclear power stations for heat and power requirements, thereby freeing non-coking coal largely for conversion purposes. The establishment of these enterprises will require a massive national effort and a high degree of co-ordination at the planning stage.

The portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was trialled to determine the extent and intensity of any hydrothermal alteration halo associated with gold mineralisation in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) of the Otago Schist.   Twelve diamond drillholes through the HMSZ were analysed with the PIMA at a sample spacing of 1 m. The drillholes were selected on two traverses along the line of strike and down-dip of the mineralisation in and around Panel 2 of the Frasers underground development.   The study showed that the Hangingwall shear of the HMSZ has a more distinctive infrared signature in intersections with high grades. The Hangingwall shear in these drill holes is defined by a shift in the wavelength of the Al-OH absorption feature from ~2220 nm to <2210 nm. This shift is attributed to a change in the mineralogy from phengite to muscovite. Overprinting this trend in some of the drillholes is the presence of the 2210 nm Al-OH absorption feature, ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite also tends to be present in numerous other regions of the schist above the Hangingwall shear associated with steeply dipping faults and foliation parallel joints. In drill holes with low grades the Hangingwall shear does not exhibit any obvious infrared signature.   At the scale of study, the PIMA does not provide evidence for an alteration halo associated with hydrothermal mineralisation above the Hangingwall shear. Possible tectonic movement may have displaced any alteration halo that once existed, away from the zone of mineralisation. For this reason, PIMA apparently cannot be used for predicting the location of the Hangingwall shear during exploration drilling. However, the study did show that the PIMA could define the Hangingwall shear when the rocks were sufficiently altered and mineralised.

In the non-codified realm of tunnel design there are issues which are sure-fire instigators of controversy. This paper presents a discussion regarding one particular issue which in the authors’ experience often results in comment and debate. This issue only forms part of the rock load assessment process, but it is specifically addressed with the intention of presenting a rational basis for design, which may result in broader acceptance within the tunnel design community.The issue considered relates to the characterisation of in situ rock stresses for the design of tunnel support in the Sydney Basin. A summary is given of the literature on the topic, with emphasis on the main sources of uncertainty and contention. A design approach is proposed, with particular focus given to the numerical modelling of in situ ground stresses and the approach used to ensure that the adopted stress regime is consistent with the assumed ground model. Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

The appraisal of mineral reserves by a lender is carried out at the initial stages in developing a loan for a mine. The depth of investigations is influenced by the competence of the explorer, the type of commodity and knowledge of the geological environment. The lender looks for a reserve life which exceeds the term of the loan plus contingencies for events such as cost over-runs, adverse markets and production difficulties. The physical features of importance are discussed. Factors with direct financial implications are considered for their incorp- oration in sensitivity analyses to allow risk appraisal. When satisfied, the lender can then proceed to review cash flow forecasts, the basic strength of the project, then determine with the borrower the components and alternat- ives of a loan package.

In the spectrum of mining-related disciplines, geometallurgy sits between resource geology and metallurgical engineering. Unlike its neighbours, it is a relatively young discipline and its concepts, procedures and techniques are still evolving. Relevant geometallurgical issues differ from one deposit to the next so there is no single template that can be used in all situations, meaning that geometallurgy programs are nearly always customised and tailored to the deposit and the situation.Over time, a number of key mistakes are seen to emerge regularly. The eventual impact of these mistakes can vary from suboptimal performance of mine and plant to complete failure of the operation. For instance, poor characterisation of ore lithologies and their spatial distribution can have negative impacts on processing plant throughput. However, when combined with failure to identify critical blending constraints it can result in a totally inoperable plant.A number of common mistakes committed during geometallurgical programs are discussed and some preferred alternative approaches are suggested

The solubility of nickel in matte smelt- ing slags, both as oxide and in the metallic form, is predicted using the results of a recent experimental work carried out with lime- free iron silicate slags as well as slags containing lime. Predicted solubilities are much lower than the nickel content of smelting slags, indicating that entrapped and possibly dissolved matte could be the major cause of nickel losses in such slags.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator has an extensive history of reagent trials, with different reagents coming in and out of favour over the years. The research and use of carbon depressants is particularly prevalent, as carbonaceous pyrite is a major source of concentrate dilution. Years of research led to the use of naphthalene sulphonate due to its excellent carbon depression properties. However, due to rising reagent costs carbon depression ceased in the late 1990s. This led to the loss of knowledge about the use and value of naphthalene sulphonate. Cyanide is used at the Copper Concentrator for the sole purpose of pyrite depression and over the years multiple projects have been devoted to finding alternatives to it. In 2012 the neighbouring MIM Lead-Zinc Concentrator replaced cyanide with naphthalene sulphonate which resulted in cost savings and the elimination of a hazardous reagent. In 2013, plant trials were conducted at the Copper Concentrator in hopes to replicate the outcomes obtained at the Lead-Zinc Concentrator. The results of the trials conducted at the Copper Concentrator showed that naphthalene sulphonate could not replace cyanide and this work was set aside to pursue more promising projects. Further research conducted in 2014 found that mineralogy and a better understanding of the depressing mechanism of naphthalene sulphonate held the key to improved pyrite depression at the Copper Concentrator. The findings showed that Mount Isa copper ore contains two forms of pyrite; euhedral pyrite (cubic pyrite) and framboidal pyrite (carbon rimmed spheres of pyrite), both of which require different reagents to sufficiently depress them. Naphthalene sulphonate was found to be an excellent carbon depressant, suitable for depressing graphite and framboidal pyrite, whilst cyanide specifically targets euhedral pyrite.In 2015 laboratory test work was conducted to examine the use of naphthalene sulphonate in conjunction with cyanide to selectively target both forms of pyrite. This work led to a full plant trial, the results of which showed a significant increase in plant performance, with higher copper concentrate grades and recoveries being achieved. The world is becoming an increasingly complex environment to operate within. Adoption and evolution of technology is occurring at a rapid pace and operating spaces are growing in interconnectedness and interdependency. In mining this is evidenced by the large-scale adoption of autonomous machinery, intelligent systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and robotics to realise benefits in optimisation, productivity, and safety. To enable continual delivery and growth in operational performance, and to realise the aforementioned benefits, a new approach for managing mining and metals is required (Mining Review Africa, 2023). This means that an already talent constrained workforce must learn to manage the complexity inherent, evolving, and growing in the environment (Abenov et al, 2023). A key skill that needs to be further developed and deployed to combat these challenges and to enable robust problem solving is that of systems thinking, which is already practiced in pockets within the mining industry. Experience and learning can be leveraged from other industries and their application of systems thinking to ensure that focus is maintained on areas where the benefits from which will be optimised. With targeted application, a workforce capable of effective systems thinking can be the catalyst to optimisation across mining organisations.

The use of compressive crushing equipment such as gyratory crushers within minerals processing plants can potentially generate large quantities of dust. Remedies to this problem include the retrofitting of shrouds, enclosures, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems and water suppression systems. The single or combined application of these systems must be optimised to ensure they operate efficiently. It is desirable that the future design planning of such facilities include integrated dust suppression and/or removal systems to ensure material delivery rates are maintained and the welfare of the workforce is protected. The characteristic release of dust and the disturbance to the surrounding ventilation airflow is investigated by the construction and solution of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models validated by data obtained from scale experiments. A 3D computational model was constructed using the FluentTM CFD software to represent the background ventilation regime within an underground crushing installation. The falling ore is represented as a continuum granular fluid falling under gravity from the raised bed of the dump truck. Transient path lines are computed to simulate the updraft airflow generated by the tipping process and indicate the dispersion path of any entrained dust. The relationships between the falling ore material, the displaced air and the shear induced flow are determined by an analysis of the computed volume/mass flow rates predicted across the crusher opening. An analysis of the airflow patterns predicted by the CFD simulation models indicates strong shear flows induced between the tipped material and the surrounding airflow in the vicinity of the crusher during tipping, and a strong influence of the background ventilation regime on the path taken by this shear flow. Scale experimental studies were conducted to characterise the induced shear flow and visualise the potential entrainment and transport of dust. An analysis of these experiments is presented.

"Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important.
