In the past 40 years substantial changes have occurred in flotation machines. This has included increases in mechanical cell size to 630 m3 , significant changes to flotation column aeration design and widespread use of the Jameson cell and other pneumatic flotation cells. Over the corresponding period there has been increased used of machine characterisation measurements to benchmark and optimise flotation circuit performance. JKTech maintains a database of industrial flotation machine characterisation measurements. The database contains over 4000 entries and includes gas dispersion measurements, such as bubble size, gas hold-up and superficial gas velocity, cell dimensions and impeller tip speeds. Data comes from numerous operating sites and commodity groups, including gold, copper, molybdenum, nickel, palladium, lead-zinc, platinum, silica, phosphate, coal and iron ore. Flotation duties registered include flash flotation, preflotation, roughing, scavenging and cleaner circuits. Measurements have been conducted on a wide range of flotation machines from different manufacturers. This includes forced air machines, such as Outotec and Dorr Oliver, and self-aerated machines, such as Denver and Wemco. The database also includes substantial flotation column entries, such as the Microcel, Eriez/CMT Slamjet and Jameson cell. This paper describes the flotation machine characterisation database and discusses the variation between different types of industrial flotation machines, in operating production circuits.

Production of oic at BHP Minerals Pty Ltd's Cannington Mine commenced in May 1997. The initial sloping blocks at the [nine are located in the upper part of the Footwall Lead lode, and the Hangingwall Lead and Glenholme Breccia lodes. This paper discusses the geological investigations, interpretation and modelling that was undertaken for the Footwall Lead lode production block at Cannington Mine, as well as providing a basic geological introduction to the Cannington deposit.

Blasting is the most commonly used excavation technique in mining and civil engineering applications. Blasting induces strong ground motions and fracturing of rock mass in rock excavations. Particularly, high ground motions may also induce some instability problems of rock mass and structures nearby. Furthermore, it may cause some environmental problems due to noise as well as vibrations of structures near the populated areas. Furthermore, flyrocks is another major issue for the safety of people and damage to machinery and equipments when blasting is employed. In this study, the authors explore the ways how to estimate the ground motions as a function of distance, amount of explosive, number of holes. The ground motions were measured by stand-alone accelerometers developed by the first author and some empirical relations are developed. The effect of ground motions on the instability issues of benches such as sliding, toppling and rockfalls were investigated. Furthermore, the flyrock issue is investigated and some empirical relations to estimate the maximum distance of flyrocks from the blasting relations are compared and discussed. The Bellambi Coal Company Limited com menced longwall mining at South Bulli Colliery in 1965. At present it operates three long- wall units in two seams. Although results to date have been less successful than planned, it is apparent that this type of mining has tremendous potential in the particular conditions at South Bulli. Massive sandstone strata above the Bulli seam is the controlling influence on face conditions. The earliest equipment proved to be inadequate and the Company has progress- ively replaced and upgraded the roof supports and ancillary equipment so that the present units are capable of producing high and consistent outputs.

Planning for a circular economy allows for previously untapped market opportunities to be explored, resulting in new, innovative revenue generating opportunities, while also reducing environmental impacts. In particular, rare earth elements (REE) are in rising demand as they are key components of over 200 products across a wide range of applications (Xie et al, 2023) including renewable energy technologies. There is a geographical disparity in deposits, with China being the top producer, generating 70 per cent of global production in 2022 (Laboure, 2023). This single dominating source has created supply chain concentration and hence supply risks for other nations, providing a driver for finding alternative sources, such as mine-influenced water (MIW) and tailings. In this study, Isle presents a robust due diligence methodology for undertaking a global horizon scan into REE recovery technology, for a large mining company, from tailings decant water on a specific site. Previous studies of the tailings decant water at this site had shown potentially significant concentrations of both heavy and light REE, but challenges such as high flow, very low pH and high concentrations of iron had previously made recovery unfeasible. Due to these challenges, the horizon scan focused on technologies that had the potential for selective recovery, despite the challenges with water quality, and considered a range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This included an adsorption-based process that has the potential to selectively separate individual REE, and a polymer based selective flocculation technology.

COPING WITH COMPLEXITY In every industry, and mining is no exception, plant and processes increase in complexity over time and managers and operators need correspondingly more knowledge. The mine manager has to delegate details to operators, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, safety specialists, personnel officers and the rest. Is it reasonable then, to expect the Mines Inspector to be competent to judge the conduct of all these operations against the criterion of the regulations? Obviously not, but what are the alternatives? One is a superficial inspection where the inspector goes on a hazard hunt for broken steps and missing handrails. Another is one in which an army of specialist inspectors marches on a mine, sometimes outnumbering the staff. Each is competent to assess some part of the operation and if he or she can find an opposite number among the mine staff, they can discuss details. But what good does it achieve? The system acts to remedy present defects and to make recommendations which, if only they were followed, would prevent the same things happening again. Given that this process has been going on since the first Factory Act of about 1840, how is it that there are any more defects left to put right? The answer of course is that defects keep appearing, and new defects arise as fast as the old ones are found and corrected. Further progress can only be made by preventing defects at their source.

The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

A distinct zonation occurs in the nature of submarine volcanic activity associated with westwards propagation of the Woodlark spreading system into continental crust. Olivine tholeiites (Type I MORB) flooring one spreading segment in the Eastern Sector of the Western Woodlark Basin are accompanied by more evolved "ferrobasalts". Basaltic andesites and Mg-poor andesite-dacites occur on axial and flanking seamounts respectively. In the Western Sector, Mg- and K-rich olivine andesites occur in a rift valley and on an axial seamount near the tip of the propMr/8 tig rift. Observed correlations between 6Sr ratios (0.7028-0.7041), REE patterns and K contents imply a complex petro- genesis with the relative importance of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination difficult to resolve.

At Bulong, the mineralised (>0.8 per cent nickel) ore exists within numerous lithologies, which can and do occur coincidently. It is very important to discriminate between the different host units for estimation purposes, stockpiling and scheduling. This allocation of host unit has relied upon visual interpretation by the geologist recording the information, which can be very subjective by its nature. By using quantified constraints, such as assayed magnesium oxide and iron, the subjectivity of describing the host material of nickel laterite ore is reduced. The constraints permit consistent identification of the various host units, which improves the confidence in the overall estimation and scheduling of the ore.

The objective of this paper is to present the potential applications of geostatistical analyses in planning CPTu investigations, as well as interpolation of CPTu data. The paper presents a case study of a geostatistical analysis of CPTu data undertaken between 2004 and 2017 for an upstreamraised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. An initial model is developed using the 2004, 2009 and 2017 CPTu data. The model is used to predict in situ cone tip resistance (qc) measurements, as the interested primary variable, at the selected locations where 2019 CPTu were undertaken, and the results of the prediction and the actual data are compared.

It is well documented that drill and blast outcomes affect the downstream mining processes of loading, hauling, crushing and grinding but it can also significantly impact on mine profitability via dilution, recovery percentage, lump generation (iron ore), fines generation (coal, iron ore), coal loss and final wall stability. Drill and blast must therefore be optimised to improve the overall profitability via positively impacting on productivity and saleable product generation. It is however, difficult to achieve this because of the complexity of the number of parameters that must be integrated and managed across the entire mine value chain, ie the concept of æMine to MillÆ. This paper highlights, via a simple case study, the need to have a mineÆs drill and blast system both in control (so that it is predictable to a high degree) and with minimal variability (so the design actually makes it into the field). This type of management control is essential prior to optimisation work being undertaken. The æTeam ApproachÆ is discussed to illustrate the methodology of achieving drill and blast optimisation. A case study is presented to illustrate the potential benefits of this approach which in this mine represented a 27 per cent reduction in powder factor with the downstream functions achieving higher productivity with the same or reduced maintenance costs. It is essential for Australian mineÆs to implement the appropriate management strategies and experienced personnel placement to ensure that their mineÆs drill and blast system is correctly managed to facilitate the optimisation of profit. Without this, the Australian mining sector will become increasingly uncompetitive.

East Nelson and Marlborough, in the northeast of the South Island, contain a wide variety of metallic minerals, including gold, silver, copper, chromite, antimony and scheelite, but no sustained metallic mining industry has evolved. Gold was the most sought-after mineral during the first century of European settlement and numerous discoveries were made but these failed to live up to expectations. While traces of gold are widespread in east Nelson, including in quartz veins in Nelson City, no payable deposits were found. In Marlborough the probability of a gold discovery had initially seemed remote but all this changed with the finding of rich deposits in the bed of the Wakamarina River in 1864, which provided a much-needed boost to the provincial economy. However, the decline of gold mining in Marlborough began virtually as soon as it had commenced. Extensive floods in 1865 hastened the exodus of miners to the profitable new fields of the West Coast.

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to address this yearÆs New Zealand Minerals Conference.   As you have already heard from the Associate Minister of Energy, the Government believes that the minerals industry is an important part of our economy. In particular, our coal and lignite resources have the potential to play an important role in New ZealandÆs energy sector as both a primary fuel and as a means to produce electricity.   The Government has taken a keen interest in the primary fuel sector given the declining reserves of natural gas sector. The energy sector is a key driver of economic growth and it is therefore critical that we have a reliable supply of primary fuel as part of the energy mix.   In a global sense, New Zealand is like many other countries regarding the need to secure energy for the future. Natural gas will be a key bridging fuel in the transition from an energy market based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables over the next century.   However, natural gas as a solution to this energy transition has some pragmatic limitations for New Zealand. There is uncertainty as to when new domestic reserves of gas can be discovered and developed. And the alternative of imported LNG poses a number of costs and risks to the economy.   New ZealandÆs coal resources are vast-estimated to be enough to last hundreds of years at the current rate of extraction. The main question is can extraction be increased and sustained to meet the demand of domestic power producers and at the same time meet commitments to lucrative international markets?   At this point it is appropriate for me to place coal into context with Governments overarching policy objectives for energy. The Government has stated objectives for the energy sector emphasising energy efficiency and an increased focus of renewable energy, while still ensuring security of supply and certainty as to energy costs and risk. Coal certainly can make a contribution to these objectives going forward.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

Slags are the most voluminous solid by-products generated in pyrometallurgical operations, and, as such, finding an application for these oxidic materials is pertinent to maintaining resource efficiency. In particular, pyrometallurgical copper production is associated with high slag rates, typically ranging from 2.2 to 3.0 tons of slag per ton produced copper, which necessitates slag valourisation. A possible application for these iron silicate slags is as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), which effectively lowers the CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious material. Although utilising iron silicate slags as SCMs has been studied in previous work, the scientific literature has limited data on the effect of composition on the inherent reactivity in cementitious systems. More specifically, no reports on the impact of FeO/SiO2 ratio have been presented in previous publications. Therefore, the present study aimed to isolate this parameter in a synthetic FeO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-Cr2O3 system. Since the amorphous content is a pertinent parameter for SCMs, a high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) was utilised to assess the crystallisation behaviour at continuous cooling conditions. Furthermore, high-temperature rheological experiments were conducted to measure the viscosities of the slags in relation to the crystallisation behaviour. The experiments showed that depolymerising the slag by increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio generated a less viscous slag, which showed higher tendencies for crystallisation. Furthermore, experiments assessing the inherent reactivity as an SCM showed that depolymerising the slag by increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio as the sole independent parameter generated an initially more reactive slag. However, replacing SiO2 with FeO was found to negatively affect the reactivity as measured over seven days within the tested compositional range.

The fragmentation of whole rock by blasting has an influence on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. However, no method of calculating the frag- mentation has yet been developed. This paper gives a method of calculating the fragmen- tation for the simplest form of blasting, i.e. cratering. Cratering consists of the detonation of a spherical charge of explosive in a blasthole breaking to one free surface. This paper gives a method of calculating the extent of the system of radial cracks generated by the explosive in the rock. This system of radial cracks is then used to calculate the fragment size distribution curve from blasting. The calculated curves are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

The paper studies the flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as: bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, respectively, using the new effective collector - H205 which has been developed by Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earth, and describes their flotation properties. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH values, Rare Earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium and calcium bearing intergrowth minerals (barite and calcite) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be successfully obtained by H205 as collector with water glass as depressant. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and reagent dosage on the flotation were investigated in the test. Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation separation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for H205 and RE cations by theorical analysis shows that H205 formed chelate complex with RE cations and adsorbed on the surfaces of RE minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by water glass can be explained as: H2Si03, HSi03 and gummy SiO2 hydrolised from water glass are selectively adsorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, under pulp pH value 8.5 to 9.5.

Two drill core samples of haematite/goethite from the Robe River (Western Australia) channel iron ore deposits (CID) were dated using (U-Th)/He methods in order to constrain the timing of iron oxide formation and thereby provide a temporal context for CID genesis. (U-Th)/He ages (He ages) from these samples range from the late Oligocene to Late Miocene and despite a high degree of scatter, they corroborate relationships expected from the internal ooidal stratigraphy: For individual ooids, the ages from haematitic core are older than or indistinguishable from the ages of the surrounding goethitic cortex. The goethitic cortices are, in turn, older than the ferruginised wood fragments recovered from the cementing goethitic matrix.The data suggest the following succession of ore formation phases:• Haematitic cores in ooids of both samples formed in the Early to Middle Miocene.• Goethitic cortices of both samples formed in the late Middle to early Late Miocene. This appears to be the age of goethite cortex formation regardless of depth in the core, which does not support the top-down infill model, genetic model proposed by Heim et al (2006).• Wood fragments form a prominent component of the matrix and were ferruginised during the Late Miocene. Thus the data suggest that the unique environmental conditions for the CID formation existed during the Miocene.A methodological implication of this study is that the temperature utilised for He-extraction from iron oxides has a critical impact on the mobility of parent nuclides. The typical ~1100°C laser heating used for crystalline minerals like apatite or zircon induces loss of U and Th and results in erroneously old ages.
