Data Metallogenica (DM) is unique as a global mineral sample collection and deposit database with over 70 000 rock samples and a wide range of descriptive, photographic and measurement data. Subscribers have access to approximately four gigabytes of on-line data with many examples included on the public pages. DM commenced its life on the Pacific rim in 1971 and much recent growth has focused on countries of the Pacific margin, particularly Australia, Fiji, Chile, Indonesia and Peru. Approximately 600 separate deposits and mineral occurrences in this region are represented in DM. The sets of rock samples have been photographed at high resolution and included on the web site, together with unpublished descriptions, deposit cross-sections, bibliographies, field and mine photographs, petrology and reflectance mineralogy. Figures and abstracts from PhD theses are a new addition and the donation of proprietary databases by companies and individuals is an encouraging trend. DM increasingly is being viewed as an acceptable and important repository for æfragileÆ and irreplaceable personal and company data, it is also being recognised in its true light as a high level information system, not solely a collection of rock samples. Data Metallogenica is a not-for-profit venture of AMIRA International that requires self-funding from December 2004. Growth and development must be funded entirely out of subscription and sponsorship revenues because no government subsidy is provided. The Pacific rim is in the mainstream of mining and exploration activities worldwide and those involved have much to gain from a dynamically sustaining DM. Electron paramagnetic resonance provides a fast method to characterise quartz. Quartz from veins associated with the Cambrian massive sulphide deposits in the Mt Read Volcanics of western Tasmania and from Devonian reefs associated with gold mineralisa- tion at various localities in Tasmania exhibit specific EPR patterns, different from quartz from common veins. The intensity of the EPR spectra of the quartz can be used as a statistical guide to gold mineralisation at Beaconsfield.

As a part of Solid Energy's progressive rehabilitation of the Stockton Mine, it was determined that significant rehabilitation of the existing Mt Frederick Sidecast would be required to ensure the long-term stability of the sidecast. The goal of this rehabilitation is to reshape the existing stockpile into a more stable slope configuration, and the construction of a comprehensive stormwater collection and discharge system. The reconfigured slopes will facilitate the final revegetation of the exposed surfaces and the management of surface and groundwater discharges from the area. This paper briefly describes the specific details of the project and the significance of seismic conditions on the long-term stability of the reconfigured stockpile.

Over the last five years Mt Leyshon has matured into a sizeable gold mine by Australian Standards. In the later part of 1990, after commissioning of the 3.5 mtpa CIP Plant upgrade, experience indicated there was potentially additional Mill capacity beyond that being utilised at the 3.5 mtpa rate. Overall throughput was limited by crushing plant performance and high operating costs resulting from the age and condition of the main crushing plant.In addition, mining was being carried out using a mining contractor who utilised relatively small, high cost mining equipment, and on-going exploration success was also indicating that the then current mine plan would result in only a portion of the available resource being exploited.

The leaching of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide solutions may be reduced significantly by the passivation of the gold by a surface layer of polymeric aurocyanide. This passivation of the gold is typically countered by the presence of Pb(+2) species in solution, which may be present as an impurity in the solution, or specifically added for this purpose. The speciation and availability of Pb(+2) in typical cyanide leach solutions is illustrated as a function of pH, and the presence of S(-2), S(+6), Cu(+1) and Ag(+1) species. The probable role of the Pb(+2) species in efficient gold leaching is discussed.

The United States Steel Mining Co., Inc. recently experienced a major mine fire at the Cumberland Mine. This mine is located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is mining a high volatile bituminous coal seam (Pittsburgh Seam). The mine fire was success- fully controlled and extinguished without loss of life or serious injury to any miner or mine rescue personnel and finally reopened within 40 days of its inception.

Online monitoring of particles cumulative percent passing (PCPP) for a target size at hydrocyclone overflow, compared with traditional offline methods, provides PCPP feedback in real time, and is advantageous in enabling energy-efficient comminution, increasing downstream flotation efficiency, and improving upstream resource knowledge. However, existing online approaches are generally costly and bespoke, and some are sensitive to operational changes. Therefore, this study proposes a new low-cost alternative based on accelerometer measurement for online PCPP monitoring in the overflow of hydrocyclones and provides a preliminary experimental investigation under dry condition. The proposed method uses a sensing probe inserted into the overflow pipe of a hydrocyclone to receive particle impact from the incoming slurry, with accelerometers attached to the probe and mounting frame outside the pipe for particle-probe impact detection. As a preliminary investigation before studying particle-probe impact events in slurry, tests under dry condition without fluids were conducted using dry sand particles in free fall from a fixed height. Accelerometer measurements are analysed in both time and frequency domains through root-mean-square (RMS) and fast Fourier transform (FFT). Results show that accelerometer measurements are useful in estimating mass flow rates, which are correlated to the accelerometer output amplitude RMS values in time domain, in a non-linear mapping. Different particle size classes can be identified by examining the accelerometer output amplitude at a known mass flow rate. Different particle size classes feature their distinct signature frequencies (SFs) that can be examined via FFT and the SF is found to be independent of the mass flow rate. The results imply that any PCPP changes can be detected by the change in the accelerometer output amplitude as well as a shift in SF, which demonstrates the effectiveness of using accelerometers to gauge changes in PCPP. Based on the current findings in dry condition, future work will investigate particle-probe impact events in slurry.

Understanding and quantifying residual risk is the key to the successful closure and rehabilitation of mines. An important aspect of residual risk is predicting the long-term chemistry of mine water and the long-term geochemical stability of mining wastes. This requires updating the characterisation data for mine wastes and monitoring mine drainage throughout the life-of-mine. The intrinsic properties of waste materials (ie the geology, mineralogy and the weathering processes, which in turn depend on the local climate and water balance in a waste storage facility) are the fundamental controlling factors of residual risk. In this paper, case studies of coal and metalliferous mines are used to discuss the definition of residual risk for a range of waste storage facilities and to highlight the benefits and limitations of current geochemical methods in predicting and quantifying residual risk. Mining activity has been an integral component in the New Zealand economy since the early days of European settlement. Recently in common with other Pacific Rim countries there has been a resurgence of investment in gold. A sustained and increasing exploration effort has resulted in the rapid development of alluvial gold mining operations, a number of hard rock gold discoveries, and a general optimism about New Zealand's prospectivity. New Zealand's attitude to mining development, in particular hard rock gold mining is influenced by high environmental values and a concern, largely through absence of examples, that modern mining may not perform to community standards. While these environmental concerns are wide spread there is a growing realisation that gold mining, if properly managed, can take place within acceptable environmental standards and that it has the potential to contribute significantly to New Zealand's economy. New mining developments have an important role to play in this process. The mining industry in New Zealand is now at a crossroads. Having invested substantially and confirmed the potential for gold mining developments it has found itself in a rapidly changing economic environment as the Labour Government puts in place a number of fundamental economic reforms. The reforms are intended to free up the economy removing the rafts of subsidies and protective measures which have stultified initiative and growth. A fundamental reform of the public service has been initiated including corporatisation of trading activities and the establishment of a Department of Conservation to administer estensive areas of Crown land. Both petroleum and mining taxation are being reviewed with the intention of creating a more neutral competitive environment. Mining legislation is also being re-examined with both efficiency and equity objectives. While the current environment is characterised by uncertainty and rapid change, the outcome will be a more market-oriented stable policy environment, to the mutual benefit of the industry itself and the New Zealand Community.

Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

Secondary microplaty haematite in its variety of styles and generations is the defining component of the high-grade banded iron-formation (BIF)-hosted iron ores of the world that are dominated by martite (M; - haematite pseudomorphs after magnetite). The term microplaty haematite (mplH) was introduced during the CSIRO-AMIRA 1976-1994 iron ore program, and was used to differentiate the then main export martite-microplaty haematite (M-mpl H) ore types of Tom Price-Whaleback and Paraburdoo (Paleoproterozoic), from the newly exploited, more prolific supergene martite-goethite (M-G) ores (Mesozoic-Paleocene) of the Hamersley Province that are now the major Hamersley iron ore exports.Morris (1980, 1985) suggested that the most important genetic factor that distinguishes the two main ore types was regional metamorphism of Paleoproterozoic M-G ores at temperatures normally related to diagenesis (ca 80 - 100°C). As temperatures increased, mplH grew in goethite both spontaneously as well as by nucleating on martite and other pre-existing haematite. Because the conversion of goethite to haematite involves a ~27 per cent reduction in volume, the crystals probably grew within microvoids of their own creation, with iron transfer through water resulting from the process itself, a local hydrothermal process requiring no introduced hypogene fluids.Barley et al (1999) and Taylor et al (2001) concluded instead that oxidation of introduced siderite in hydrothermally metasomatised BIF ‘protore’ resulted in mplH + ankerite by reaction with heated meteoric fl uids. This postulated ‘protore’, still preserved locally at Mt Tom Price, was described during the CSIRO-AMIRA program as local post-ore BIF metasomatic residuals. These new hypogene-meteoric concepts for M-mpl H genesis have formed the basis for a range of varying local and international models that currently dominate the literature of iron ore.No valid petrographic data supporting the hypogene-supergene modelling was found but petrographic images of goethite-related mplH growth in a range of different environments are shown.

This research project came about as a result of ICI Australia offering a scholarship to a final-year mining engineering student at the Western Australian School of Mines. A signifi-cant part of this year of study is devoted to an industrial project and consequently one of the conditions of the award is that the successful applicant pursue a research project of interest to the donor company.Having selected the project and the most appropriate final year student, a steering committee composed of representatives of ICI Australia, Kalgoorlie Mining Associates, the Mines Department and the WA School of Mines was set up. This committee is largely responsible for planning the main thrust of the research work whilst the detailed planning and day-to-day activities have been largely the responsi-bility of the research student, his academic supervisor and senior staff at the Mt Charlotte Mine.

Dugald River Mine (DRM) is located approximately 85 km north-east of Mount Isa, and 65 km northwest of Cloncurry, in the north-west Queensland Minerals Province of Australia. DRM is an underground operation and includes an above ground processing area, a 200 ha tailings facility, two waste rock dumps and associated infrastructure. The mining method is conventional underground longhole open stoping and downhole benching of a lead/zinc deposit within a black slate environment. The deposit is estimated to contain ~53 Mt of zinc and lead, which will be mined over a 30-year period. During operations, waste rock is segregated into either Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) or Non-Acid Forming (NAF) based primarily on the sulfide concentration of the rock. In particular, the NAF waste rock is an asset and is used for various small construction projects during operation; however, its primary use is for rehabilitation work at closure. Since beginning operations in 2017, DRM has generated more NAF than was originally anticipated. Whilst this is an excellent asset to DRM, it did pose a logistical problem of where to store the additional NAF for the life-of-mine and how to manage the run-off. DRM experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot conditions and periods of rainfall between November to April, and relatively dry and mild conditions between May to October. Majority of rainfall is received between January and February with an annual average rainfall of 501.1 mm. Short and intense rainfall events are common. DRM’s above ground infrastructure is land-locked between two large ephemeral watercourses, making the significant expansion of any assets challenging from a permitting/regulation and cost perspective. MMG is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and is committed to adapting to a changing climate through operations and closure. Following extensive studies DRM opted to store the additional NAF material into the adjoining NAF Dam and concurrently upgrade a previously minor sediment basin into a highly engineered sediment basin which relies on automatic flocculant dosing to meet the required discharge quality limits. This basin is climate-resilient in that the dosing system can be adjusted to counter high intensity extended rainfall events which produce highly variable inflow water quality. This abstract broadly describes how DRM designed and implemented an engineering innovation to enable the site to meet the changing climatic challenges. The abstract then describes the process to design the sediment basin and how the dosing rate was established and validated. Finally, the abstract comments on the effectiveness of the sediment basin and how it has revolutionised DRM’s approach to water treatment and management; all whilst minimising the disturbance footprint of the operation

The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

Over years of exploration the massive and tabular orebodies in the area to the South West of Western Areas Gold Mine had been assessed as containing about 50 million ounces of gold û a world class orebody. Planning initially was for a surface and subvertical shaft system to exploit this area but because of cost, a single lift shaft to an area which could be accessed ex Western Areas was planned to intersect the reef at 2760 metres. It was also planned to mine out the shaft pillar area long before the deep shafts would reach that position. This is not the normal practice in South African Gold Mines. The stoped out shaft pillar was backfilled to minimise movement in the shaft sites. The result of a competitive tender/adjudication process was that Cementation Mining û Skanska won and was awarded the R192 million contract to sink the Main and Ventilation Shafts on 15 June 1995. On 1 April 1999 Western Areas and Placer Dome SA formed a Joint Venture, which now owns and operates the mine on which the South Deep Shafts are situated. This situation prevails today.

The prospect of utilization of phosphate ores which contain high P205 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilization of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs.This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaA13(PO4)2(OH)5.3H20 and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H20. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt. Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.
