The Prestea Goldfields Ltd of Ghana, West Africa has produced over 170 t of gold with average grade of 11 g/t since 1912. The deposits occur in a wide shear zone which closely follow the Birimian-Tarkwaian contact. Both the Birimian and Tarkwaian systems are of Precambrian age. Underground exploration is carried out to delineate ore bodies by means of AX size diamond drilling at 50 m sampling intervals. After the orebody has been delineated, development work is carried out by exposing the gold reef. Channel sampling is then carried out at about 3 m intervals in both the stope and stope drives. A channel sample length is commonly 0.6 in, but may vary depending on physical characteristics of the reef. The values of channel samples are linearly combined to obtain the average reef or slope values and/or widths of the exposed sections. The sampling practice and methods of improving the efficacy of sampling at the mine are described.

This paper explores options worthy of consideration in the management of S02 produced from the gold roasting operations at Kalgoorlie. Some of the options have relevance to other sources of SO2 in the region, eminating from nickel smelting operations. The paper considers the following options: 1. Capture of SO2 within the roaster where sulphur-containing reaction products are mixed with the calcine. 2. Processes in which the sulphur-containing products are bled separately from the stack for further treatment or for dumping as a waste. These include: Seawater-based scrubbing of SO2; Sulphuric acid manufacture as a feedstock for fertiliser production or for leaching of bauxite; its use as Caro's acid: and the production of value-added sulphur-containing reagents eg liquid S02 and sulphonic acid.

Ore reserve categories used by Pancontinental Mining fall into one of three fundamental groupings: Geological In Situ Reserves Mining Reserves Production Estimates The first of these describes the total reserve within stated parameters without implication as to its mineability. The second is that part of the Geological In Situ Reserve which is considered mineable under a specific mining plan. The third is the Mining Reserve adjusted with appropriate dilution and recovery factors and thus represents the best estimate of the tonnage and grade of production. This practical three category system mirrors the standard steps traditionally taken in ore reserve estimation and readily conveys the basis of the estimates. An important, but secondary classification can be added to qualify the level of confidence in these estimates using the terms: Proved (or Measured) Probable (or Indicated) Possible (or Inferred) These terms can be applied to any of the fundamental groupings, but it is generally implicit that the level of detail required to produce meaningful Mining Reserves or Production Estimates would require the basic Geological Reserve to be at a Proved or at least Probable level of confidence. The application of these classification systems by Pancontinental is illustrated by reference to the Paddington Gold Project. The methods of calculation are described including the use of geostatistics. Reconciliations of actual production with predictions from reserves are carried out monthly and annually. To date there has been an excellent correlation with Production Estimates, based on both manual and geostatistical calculations.

An outburst is the spontaneous ejection of pulverized coal and gas from the working face in an underground mine. It is caused by overstressing the rock, due predominantly to the influence of geological structures on in situ stresses, stress concentration from the excavation and overburden load on mine openings, and large volumes of gas sorbed in the rock. The spontaneous release of high pressure gas creates intense shock waves which may cause damage to the mine ven- tilation system and the pulverized rock/coal ejected may cause injury or death to miners. The gases emitted pollute the mine air and may also result in death to miners.

This paper outlines the manner in which legislative control for tunnelling and allied operations has evolved, detailing Victorian experience. It examines the concept of mine managers as it relates to the industry and attemps to illustrate its benefits. The Victorian experience in relation to fatal and serious accidents is examined in detail, particularly in the allied art of trenching and examines the Krings system of trench lining support which is hoped will catalyse an increase of engineering expertise in this area. The paper concludes by demonstrating that safety awareness is not incompatible with production efficiency or economic viability.

Mine ventilation control is one of the most important techniques to suppress the disastrous region within a limited area, to have enough time of emergencies (ignitions, fires and so on) for underground workers. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the simultaneous controlling of mine ventilation by using, micro computer connected to various kinds of sensors. In this study, basic of mine ventilation and graph theory are used for making computer programs when the characteristic curves of fans and temperature distribution in an underground roadway network are given.

Drilling has disclosed a sequence of Cainozoic sediments immediately to the west of the Ediacara mineral field containing little or no dolomitic debris in the lower and middle sections, but with gravel beds of dolomite derived from local rocks in the upper part. It is suggested that the lower and middle sequence of Cainozoic strata was deposited over the area of the Ediacara Range, and that this range was uplifted, probably as a horst block, during Quaternary times and was first exposed to subaerial erosion during the upper Pleistocene epoch.Lower Cambrian dolomites with associated stratiform lead mineralization, which formed the target of drilling on the western downthrown block of the Ediacara Fault, were eroded before deposition of Cainozoic sediments.Intense leaching of basal Cambrian dolomites around the periphery of the Ediacara Basin took place during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. This leaching process has resulted in enrichment of copper and lead mineralization in a thick marginal zone of residual clayey material overlain by dolomitic collapse breccia. These zones of leaching and enrichment were preserved under Cainozoic sediments which have subsequently been eroded. The Ediacara Fault appears to have been a major conduit for mineralizing fluids and is the main lineament of the Torrens Hinge Zone. Contemporaneous movements on this fault have controlled rates of depositionand thickness of sediments across the fault during Adelaidean and Cainozoic times. Though latest movements of this fault have been west block down, the predominant movement has been east block down with associated thickening of sediments to the east in the Adelaide Geosync1ine.

Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no 'contract' payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The 'proof of the pudding' is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of 'production' means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard 'Toro' loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.

Hydro-economics is a field of research that analyses water resources from a multi-disciplinary approach (Harou et al., 2009). These models generally include one component that describes the water resources of the catchment being analysed (e.g. the physical behaviour of water), an economic component that describes users’ water demand function (changes of willingness to pay relative to availability) and a coupling methodology. These models go beyond calculating cash flows for water investments and analyse the economic behaviour of users when facing water shortages or surplus. In other words, water demand curves are defined for each water user (e.g. urban, agriculture, mining, environmental and hydropower), and they are used to retrofit the water resources component. As a result, the model approximates the catchment scale response to droughts and wet periods, including the effects of water markets, restrictions, recycling, water sharing and any cooperative efforts by users to adjust to changing climate conditions.These models are usually focused on agriculture and urban users, the main water consumers in most catchments, but they have sometimes included environmental, industrial and hydropower users (Bekchanov, Sood, & Jeuland, 2015). Nevertheless, although a relevant user of water in several catchments, the mining industry has been rarely included. This paper is part of an ongoing project that addresses this gap by developing a hydro-economic model in the upper section of the Aconcagua River in Chile. Static attachment of bubbles to solids is contrasted with dynamic attachment in flotation cells. The times of contact during particle-bubble collisions in dynamic attachment are compared with the induction time determinations and the kinetics of thinning of the liquid films separating solids and bubbles. The thinning is examined mainly in terms of electrostatic and dispersion (van der Waals) contributions to the disjoining pressure existing in the films. The local heterogeneity (on a molecular scale) of charge distribution invariably present at all interfaces (even at conditions of zero zeta potential) calls for some means to minimize possible electrostatic repulsions which arise when the electrical double layer at the air-bubble interface begins to overlap that present at the solid surface, on encounter between particles and bubbles. It is postulated that dipoles of frother molecules, owing to their ability to "flip over" (polarise), replace localized electrostatic repulsion by attraction within fractions of a milli- second, as long as the structure of the frother molecules is sufficiently "bulky" to maintain diffuse films (of mixed collector-frother) at the air/liquid interface of bubbles. The relaxation times of dipoles (signifying their "flipping over" ability) have to be shorter than the collision times between particles and bubbles for particle-bubble attachment to be facilitated under dynamic Conditions.

Diamond bearing deposits are extremely low grade and require large bulk samples to be tested to determine the grade and quality of the stones. The semi portable plants, for treatment of these bulk samples, have followed the development of commercial processes for diamond concentration. These processes included jigs and diamond pans, which have been largely supplanted by heavy media processes for primary concentration, due to the higher efficiencies in all size ranges. A number'of flowsheets including these processes are presented. The final recovery of diamonds from the bulk sample concentrates can be accomplished by rejigging, adherance to grease or by X-ray sorting. Flowsheets incorporating all the processes are presented. Two plants are described; one incorporating jigging, rejigging and hand sorting; the other using heavy media separation, and wet X-ray sorting.

"Open pit mines today have more technology and data available. The challenge is to effectively use resources to analyse and identify mine productivity improvements. AMC Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) has completed more than 100 benchmarking studies worldwide. In the process of gathering cost and productivity data, insights have been gained on how mines are using data to drive productivity. This paper aims to share good practice on using data, what benchmarks operations should be aiming for, where mines are currently sitting, high value areas to target, and how to best prioritise improvement to meet operational goals.A key purpose of data is to assist in managing and improving operations. Key information is used to drive meetings, decisions, budget estimates and reports. Safety, equipment productivity, available stocks, grade and spatial reconciliation are examples of where data is important for management systems. The key is to keep reporting simple whilst maintaining access to source data for troubleshooting and analysis.Some operations still have paper-based reporting systems. Some operations collect data directly off machines and instruments, use cameras and have off-site control centres. The level of technology is a fit-for-purpose choice.Comparisons of productivity assumptions commonly used in feasibility studies with good practice productivity numbers sourced from AMC’s benchmarking database will be shared in this paper. A typical activity mining cost breakdown will highlight where the high value areas for productivity improvement sit.In addition to examining the productivity of each mining step it is also important to examine the impact on the mine plan. Equipment numbers, strip ratio, grade and material hardness can impact the results of bottleneck analysis. A bottleneck example case study will highlight how productivity and other factors can be used to identify and prioritise improvement opportunities.Keep it simple. Use only the critical data for meetings, decision-making, reports and plans. Reduction of Iron Content from Silica by Gravitational Processes In this research work, it was attempted to reduce the iron contents (Fe2O3) in silica sample which was provided from Shenin silica mine using gravitational processes including jig machine, multi gravity separator (MGS), shaking table and spiral. The silica sample contains 93.75 per cent SiO2, 0.44 per cent Fe2O3, 2.78 per cent Al2O3, and 0.08 per cent TiO2 and the Fe2O3 has to be reduced to about 0.1 per cent or less than 0.02 per cent. Mineralogical studies and XRD analysis indicated the presence of haematite, pyrite and goethite as the major iron impurity phases. Mineralogical studies of polished and thin sections yielded that the degree of freedom of silica is more than 80 per cent in the range of -300 +212 mm. After elimination of fine particles, at first nine tests were carried out on crusher product (in two size fractions), wet rod mil product and scrubber product by means of Jig Machine. The best results were obtained with about 0.15 per cent Fe2O3 on rod mill and scrubber product which was not desirable. Thereafter 7 tests were carried out using shaking table; the best results were obtained with about 0.14 per cent Fe2O3 on rod mill and scrubber product which was not desirable. MGS showed the worst result in order to iron removal from silica which was not desirable. Finally 9 testes were carried out using spiral whish is the best gravitational separator for elimination of iron impurities from silica. The best result of spiral tests were achieved on scrubber product. In this test concentrate weight percent and its Fe2O3 grade were 82.32 per cent and 0.085 per cent respectively. Finally a test was carried out using 2 stages of spiral in order to develop flow sheet. In this test concentrate weight percent and its Fe2O3 grade were 78.8 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively. This product can be used to produce float (clear flat) glass.

City Resources Limited selected Vanuatu as a target area for epithermal gold mineralization because of its relatively unexplored character and its location on the southwest Pacific rim. During 1985 a systematic program of reconnaissance prospecting was completed on six islands within the Vanuatu group, using a helicopter and a specially designed exploration support vessel with on-board assay laboratory. Within a period of 4 months, reconnaissance prospecting of all six islands was completed, two previously unknown epithermal gold provinces had been discovered, and six major prospects warranting detailed exploration had been identified. Factors which contributed to the success of the program include (i) a flexible management approach, (ii) the mobility and access provided by the support vessel/helicopter combination, (iii) rapid assay turn-around, and (iv) adherence to basic prospecting techniques. The relative merits of various sampling media are discussed.

Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.

Renison Limited produces high and low grade tin concentrates at an annual rate of 5000 tonnes of contained tin metal. In spite of the fine average cassiterite grain size, emphasis is placed on gravity concentration methods to produce a high grade final product. Cassiterite flotation is considered and operated as a gravity circuit scavenger responsible for approximately 15 percent of recovered tin metal as a fine grained low grade concentrate. Metallurgical problems mainly result from ore-type variations which may be aggravated by a number of circulating loads. The rationalisation of circuitry is being studied to provide more effective control by operators and to allow exploitation of current control and modelling techniques.

A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.
