One of the biggest drawbacks of deciding upon a heap leach method of treating gold ore is the risk associated with the full-scale production heaps not performing as predicted by the testwork. This paper examines the key decisions that are taken in the design of a heap leach project, and suggests ways in which exposure to these risks can be minimised. It also looks at monitoring techniques to give early warning of problems and possible remedial actions.

When the human eye fails in the evaluation of quality parameters in the extraction of minerals the use of laser-induced fluorescence analysis (LIF) can supply more detailed information on the composition of rocks. On the basis of measurements of selected raw materials engineering concepts for the use of this method in the mining industry as an innovative system for horizon control of mining machines will be described and the most important analysis parameters, influencing factors and interference variables are presented.

Underground mining in the West Moreton coal field started in the 1870's. Subsidence related to coal mining activities is an ongoing problem facing planners and developers in the Ipswich area in South Eastern Queensland. The history of coal mining in the area over the last 110 years has left the legacy of periodic surface instability in several areas. In general, modern engineering analysis with current mining methods combine to create predicatable analysis of surface stability and movement. Where old workings using several variations of the bord and pillar system are affected by current activity, the predictibility of the surface movement is greatly reduced. Geological complexities further complicate the analysis. Mining and the related dewatering affects the stresses on pillars in old workings. This is caused by reducing buoyancy effects caused by changes in the water levels in old workings. Of particular relevance is the depth of workings and strength of the coal and overburden. The type of subsidence affecting the surface can range from localised pillar failure, to roof failure and potholing and the likelihood of the particular form of subsidence can be assessed from studying the workings in relation to the stratigraphy and structure of the coal measure Formations.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989.Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90% of the gold in the bottom 7 metres.The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below.Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced; Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken.While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

The problems facing the metallurgical industry from the viewpoint of the range of unacceptable residues, flue dusts and slags currently produced from the electrolytic zinc process, electric arc furnace scrap treatment, and blast furnace operation in lead smelting and the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are addressed. The application of the Ausmelt technology is discussed and analysed for the pyrometallurgical treatment of zinc plant residues, steel plant flue dusts and lead blast furnace and ISP slags, as well as the more complex issue of smelter modernisation to avoid production of zinc plant residues in the future. Processes developed from pilot work are described and indications of the economics of treatment of electrolytic zinc plant neutral residue and jarosite are given.

Time-dependent deformation occurs when geo-materials are under an applied load; this may lead to additional deflection of a tunnel structure and the stress redistribution in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolt support system over time. A better understanding of this creep behaviour can improve the reliability of design, construction and maintenance of tunnels. Hence, the present investigation was carried out on the time-dependent properties of rock, shotcrete and the combined tunnel support system. Tunnels constructed in different ground conditions were modelled. The closure changes of the tunnel with time and the redistribution of stress in the surrounding rock, shotcrete lining and rock bolts due to the creep deformation were analysed. Results of the present analysis were compared with the results from the commercial program ABAQUS.

Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

Accounts of their activities are hazy and debatable. A broad brush account is all that I can hope to accomplish under these circumstances. It is fitting that a picture be painted and possible lessons learnt from the achievements of our pre- Decessors.

The technology applied by lonex Pty Ltd provides an important breakthrough in geochemical exploration, enabling the discovery of concealed mineral deposits to great depths below surface. Most mineral discoveries have been made in areas of outcrop or relatively shallow cover; deposits at greater depth have been beyond the range of conventional geophysical and geochemical methods. Quite apart from the need to explore to greater depths in regions of major current or past production, most continents have vast areas where prospective host rocks are concealed by more recent material. There are numerous case studies where Ionex methods have located deeply-buried metal deposits, up to 500 m below surface, beneath thick younger sedimentary, volcanic, or transported cover. Research leading to the development of this technology was initiated by Dr I S Goldberg at the Rudgeofizika Institute in St Petersburg (CIS), and the methods have been employed there - and in other countries - for many years. Ionex technology became available in Australia in 1993. It comprises: ò geochemical and geoelectrochemical sampling and ultra-high-sensitivity analysis for mobile and weakly-bonded elements (I S Goldberg); ò the delineation and interpretation of regional zones of enrichment and depletion of the prime elements within geoelectrochemical systems (GES) (I S Goldberg); ò the investigation and interpretation of the three-dimensional geochemical zoning within geochemical anomalies (G J Abramson); and ò multi-variate computer modelling of the geochemical fields and systems (V L Los). lonex technology has been adapted to the environmental conditions in Australia with the participation of C 0 Haslam.

"It has been recognised that the presence of clay minerals in ores adversely affect flotation performance. In this study, changes in rheological properties of the flotation pulps under normal operating conditions were studied with additions of bentonite and kaolinite clays at various concentrations. Zeta potential measurements were also carried out to determine the changes in surface charge due to adsorption of clay particles. The results showed that bentonite clay adversely affects floatability of pyrite while kaolinite clay had a lesser influence on flotation of pyrite. The addition of Ca2+ ions to the pulp containing bentonite modified the rheological characteristics and in turn improved the pyrite flotation. It was also observed Ca2+ ions suppressed the swelling properties of bentonite and altered surface charge properties of bentonite clay particles. It has been shown that the flow index affected the ultimate recovery and it may provide a means to monitor flotation performance in routine plant operations.Citation:Basnayaka, L, Subasinghe, N and Albijanic, B, 2016. Since 2005 BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been working with the consulting company Runge to implement the software XPAC Advanced Destination Scheduler (ADS) in life-of-mine studies. The Mt Whaleback mine, being the single biggest open cut iron ore mine in the world, presents some special challenges in scheduling. The biggest challenge has been the slow run time and difficulty in targeting all ore and waste requirements. The high waste to ore strip ratio means that much of the cost of mining is tied up in waste dumping. It is therefore very important to schedule waste efficiently. At Mt Whaleback there is an additional challenge of managing two types of waste: inert and environmentally sensitive pyritic material. This paper shows how the XPAC destination scheduler is configured to achieve efficient and repeatable waste scheduling results at the Mt Whaleback mine. It also discusses proposed improvements to the process. The overall ore and waste schedule is configured to target mining parameters, crusher feed and grades. The schedule is run in two stages. The first stage is ore mining. The waste that needs to be mined is locked in a sequence. The second stage is the waste scheduling. The waste destination scheduler uses three inputs: source waste parcels locked in a sequence, a haul road and a waste dump block model. The process involves setting some rules for dump progression and haul path selection. These can be validated. The schedule is then run to target the shortest travel time. The results of scheduling are graphical and numeric and can be transferred into many different formats for reporting. The graphical result shows face positions in time that can be used for detailed dump design. The numeric results are used to estimate truck fleet size, fuel consumption, labour and equipment financials. The process has been successful in reducing the project time line, increasing the ability to do more scenarios and increasing schedule accuracy, transferability and repeatability.

Many changes have occurred in the world market for manganese over the last five years. Among these, the emergence of divided steel processes for the hot metal refining of pig iron is affecting the use of both ferruginous manganese ore and ferro manganese, at this stage particularly in the Japanese steel industry. Subsequent demand for higher quality manganese materials is promoting the use of thermally beneficiated products such as sinter. In addition, many processes are being developed for the direct smelting of fine manganese ores, of which plasma technology is the most advanced. Cost pressures and product quality requirements are encouraging pre- viously self sufficient countries such as The People's Republic of China and the USSR to import high grade manganese ores to supplement indigenous lower quality supplies. At the same time, Brazil has been provided with the impetus to convert its substantial reserves of ore to value added products.

Downhole survey uncertainties observed at various De Beers operations prompted an investigation into their possible effect on deposit shape and volume. An accurately surveyed artificial æboreholeÆ was constructed and different downhole survey instruments tested. In this way an empirically determined error range of 0.1 per cent to ten per cent was derived for downhole survey data. These survey errors were applied to an orebody model at an existing mine. Visualising the sphere of uncertainty associated with a borehole trace using a general mining package (GMP) gives an indication of possible volume variance. The resulting orebody maximum and minimum volume scenarios for three different depths (200 m, 500 m and 800 m) are presented. For certain instruments and borehole angles, the 3D positional error can be as high as 100 m at 1000 m down the hole. At depths below 200 m the resulting volume deviations can become significant for borehole survey errors exceeding 0.35 per cent. At 800 m depth the volume difference can approach 25 per cent. These figures assume that the error is compounded. The impact of these downhole survey errors is greatest for pipe-like orebodies such as porphyries and kimberlite pipes. Subhorizontal sill-like orebodies (and coal seams) will not be significantly affected by these errors. The impact of this type of survey error needs to be stated (and quantified) and is significant in JORC classification.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

The ever increasing demand for metals and minerals is putting significant pressure on current mining companies to find more ore. As these companies explore and mine, the future appears to be to go deeper and deeper underground. With depth, however, comes ever increasing costs as infrastructure such as hoisting, ventilation, the movement of workers and materials increase in size and scope. Further, the actual rock mass becomes prone to destruction through rock bursts and the heat generated becomes a major issue resulting in extreme expenditures in cooling plants and some of the biggest air movers in the world. All these issues result in dramatic changes in both capital and operating costs, subsequently making cut-off grades rise. As this trend continues there is an economic limit to how deep one can go, resulting therefore in a severe shortage of accessible ore deposits to mine. This paper discusses the need for larger marine robotics technology and presents the state-of-the-art in current research in underwater tele-autonomy, specifically the development of high bandwidth optical communication networks critical to any future activities (mining, construction, etc) underwater. The Upper Robe (Robe Gorge) deposits occur in Kumina Creek and the Robe River, some 20-40 km upstream from mining operations at Pannawonica. The Gorge Deposits were rec- ognised, mapped and sampled in 1962-3 and re- examined in detail in 1971. Approximately 180 mineralized occurrences were mapped in 1971 on 1:4800 scale and 50 of these were remapped in detail at 1:1200 scale. Eighty cross sections were measured and sampled and 300 geological maps prepared. In addition 88 holes totalling 7388 feet were drilled in three occurrences considered to have the greatest potential. The Gorge Deposits occur in the Robe Pisolite unit which forms thin remnant crusts, bay fillings and occasional cut-off meanders along the edge of the present streams. Less than 50 of the deposits have tonnage potential of one million or more. Consequently exploit- ation of the Gorge reserves must be considered as a very uncertain, long range possibility because the deposits are small and scattered throughout the gorges in the area, thereby necessitating costly railroad spur lines to gain mining access. Engineering availability of the 120/200 tonne Wabco haulpak fleet at Mt. Whaleback was in the mid fifties and unstable. The project to achieve a reliable 66% during 1980 highlighted "plannable" maintenance, short cycle scheduling, condition monitoring, backlog control, and, above all, the importance of involving all affected people. It is not sufficient for consultants to design systems and make them work. The people who use the system must understand it, support it and "own" it. In this way, they will develop it and improve results after the outside help has been withdrawn INTRODUCTION In early 1979, PA proposed a programme to improve engineering availability of the Mt. Newman Mining fleet of 70 Wabco haulpak trucks of which 53 were 120 tonne and 17 were 200 tonne units. (Subsequently five 200 tonne trucks from Hamersley Iron were added to the fleet). The ore truck workshop was also responsible for 75 tonne trucks used as water trucks and general purpose vehicles. The need for action was clear. SomincorÆs Neves Corvo Mine, one of the largest copper producers in Europe, is currently constructing a paste backfill plant in order to replace cemented rockfill in its bench and fill stopes and possibly replace hydraulic sandfill in the drift and fill stopes. A 250 m flow loop was constructed at the mine and the flow properties of various paste blends were investigated. Cycloned tailings and total tailings were both pumped successfully as pastes and were also combined with waste rock for additional testing. The pressure losses in 102 mm and 154 mm diameter pipeline were recorded at flowrates up to 60 m3/hr and are presented at slumps from 120 mm to 250 mm. The data showed the sensitivity of paste mixtures to slight changes in consistency, confirming the need for accurate control during paste production and distribution. The flow results clearly showed the different paste behaviour between cycloned and total tailings pastes and the change in properties at low and high slumps. In addition to pressure loss data, strength testing was done on 38 mm and 82 mm diameter samples. Further strength testing is ongoing at the mine using fly ash as a supplement to cement, reducing the overall binder cost. Preliminary engineering for the underground distribution system is briefly discussed, with reference to the siting of the plant. The Neves Corvo Mine is particularly shallow and alternative methods to pumping were sought in order to ensure sufficient hydraulic head for underground distribution. The comparison of options had to take into account the capital and operating costs, the operation of the plant and the impact on the future expansion of paste fill utilisation at Neves Corvo.

It is hypothesised that increasing the number of loading passes will produce a reduced range of truck payload outcomes compared with four-pass loading. The paper provides analysis to support this hypothesis. It is shown that, hypothetically, loading trucks with five or more passes will result in reduced tendency for overloading and reduced confidence interval for truck payloads that increase the confidence level of containing high end payloads within safe and commercially acceptable limits. Furthermore, increased number of passes provides for more precise bucket load spotting and so improves distribution of payloads within truck bodies. Truck-loading issues examined by the paper include: Improvement in life of driveline components and tyres. Generally tyre costs are relatively moderate; but tyres tend to become an increasingly sensitive performance/cost component as truck scale increases; Reduction of site severity fects flowing on to suspensions, truck frames and structural components generally with potential for reduced long-term repair costs; Less physical body damage due to smaller load increments; Reduced risk of non-compliance with payload limitations for safe braking standards; Increase in loading cycle times tend to increase with scale of loading machinery within the limits of a specific type of equipment (ie rope shovels or hydraulic shovels). Production increase with increased bucket capacity is, to a degree, offset by slower loading cycle times. This is particularly pronounced with front-end loaders but tends to be less noticeable with hydraulic excavators/shovels and electric rope shovels. Decrease in loading time, as a proportion of total truck-cycle time as open pits deepen and dump reaches increase. The production and cost benefits of four-pass loading tend to diminish as truck cycle times increase. The paper also discusses the implications for loading-equipment philosophy to satisfy the future needs of the industry. Cost benefits from upscaling tend to diminish as truck scale increases, so increasing management diligence and close monitoring are required to ensure that expected outcomes are realised. These truck-loading issues have been researched to assess the benefits positive or negative) of four-pass loading in practical scenarios. An attempt is made to determine whether four-pass loading is a æmust-haveÆ or merely a æmythÆ.
