Having provided basic data in the main paper I would now like to move on to discuss these areas in broader terms and to examine the various coalfields in terms of their tectonic setting and depositional environment and ultimately to make some brief comments on the factors which may have controlled deposition.

The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag, the main system formed in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser, was measured at 1873 K to understand the effect of slag compositions on the carbon contamination in the ultra-low carbon (ULC) steels. The stable form of carbon was demonstrated to be carbonate by plotting the log [(wt%C)/aC] ratio against the log p(O2) which ranged -11 < log p(O2,atm) < -9. The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be estimated using thermodynamic model. The distribution ratio of carbon increased with increasing concentration of FeO due to the FeO reduction reaction and increased basicity of slag. The carbonate capacity of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be expressed as a linear function of the activity of lime and the optical basicity.

A contract for three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans of the same aerodynamic design, was placed by Mount ]sa Mines Limited in 1963. The hydraulic blade pitch changing mechanism, the method of blade fabrication, and the roll out centre casings are features of these fans. Protection devices and fan control are designed for unattended operation and remote control. The erection and commissioning of the fans during 1964-65 is described.

MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) committed to a long-term future in copper in the Carpentaria Mineral Province in 1996 with the development of the Enterprise and Ernest Henry mines, and an upgrade of MIMsÆ copper smelter in Mount Isa, and copper refinery in Townsville. The upgrade of the copper smelter will enable the smelter to produce 250 000 tpa of copper with a single primary smelting unit, the copper Isasmelt furnace installed in 1992. The copper Isasmelt furnace currently smelts concentrate containing 145 000 tpa copper. To reduce the risk associated with the copper smelter upgrade, and shorten the ramp up time of the upgraded smelter, two high-rate trials were undertaken in 1997 to demonstrate that the copper Isasmelt furnace could, with an additional 525 tpd of tonnage oxygen, treat concentrates containing 250 000 tpa copper. During the trials the concentrate feed rate to the Isasmelt furnace was increased from its average rate of 100 tph of concentrate to 150 tph of concentrate. The increase in the capacity of the furnace was achieved by: supplementing the installed tonnage oxygen capacity of 595 tpd with an additional 300 tpd supply; reducing variability in the furnace feed rate from ¦25 per cent to less than ¦5 per cent; and reducing tramp air. The Isasmelt furnace smelted concentrate at a rate of 140 to 150 tph for four hours 25 minutes during Trial 1, and at a rate of 150 tph of concentrate for five hours and 30 minutes during Trial 2. The oxygen utilisation was 100 per cent during the trials with the process remaining under control. As a result of the development work for the trials the average treatment rate of the furnace under normal conditions increased by ten per cent.

This study presents the procedure of mine modelling and reserve evaluation by means of statistics, computer interpolation methods and aerophotography interpretation. All data are from Carbonifera Treviso, Laura Muller City, Santa Catarina State, southernmost Brazil. From 22 bore holes and nine trenches opened in the coal seam outcrops, a data base including level references and thickness of all rock formations was created.Using this information, basic statistic analysis was carried out, showing that there are three different populations (three modal distribution). These populations defined three geological blocks with different characteristics of overburden removal and mining methodology. This mathematical approach for analysing geological data is very important for correct mine planning and complementary prospection.

THE filter-press, which has done so much for the successful-treatment of the sulpho-telluride ores of Kalgoorlie, has a serious rival in the vacuum process, and this paper is written with a view to arousing more interest in the cheaper working of the press, it being doubtful whether its efficiency in extraction can be improved upon. Before proceeding with the actual working of the press, it may be as well to make brief mention of the character of the ore treated at the Associated Northern Blocks, where these notes were compiled. This paper, one of two written about the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling Conference, 1993, describes the design and monitoring aspects of the railway tunnels built between Central Station and Brunswick Street Station.The design was mainly influenced by the need to minimise settlement of buildings above the route. Geotechnical models developed during the open pit mine planning stage are generally three-dimensional (3D) in component to capture the spatial variation in geological, structural, hydrogeological and geomechanical conditions. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the 3D geological, hydrogeological and structural models are simplified to two-dimensions (2D). This paper demonstrates this simplification, through referenced case studies, can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being analysed and/or a conservative Factor of Safety (FOS), or Strength Reduction Factor (SRF), being calculated, leading to a false sense of stability. There exists a paradigm that the FOS calculated using 2D limit equilibrium (LE), or the Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) calculated using 2D finite element (FE), modelling methods is generally conservative, ie lower, than the true FOS. However, this assumption that 3D FOS, or 3D SRF, is always higher than 2D FOS, or 2D SRF, is not always correct (Chen and Chameau, 1983; Bromhead and Martin, 2004; Herza et al, 2017; Pyke, 2017; Dana et al, 2018).

The term geometallurgy (or geometallurgical) first appeared in the literature some 40 years ago and has a wide range of definitions and perspectives which increases the barriers of communication between practitioners and across functional groups and management levels within organisations. However the consistent theme running through the diversity of definitions and perspectives is the requirement for close collaboration between the relevant disciplines. This concept of geometallurgy arguably goes back to the earliest days of the exploitation of mineral deposits, through the mid-1500s to the beginning of the 20th century.This holistic and integrated view was diminished during the 20th century due to a number of factors which included the commencement and continuing upward trend of large-scale mining and the expansion in production, the rise of scientific and classical management theories and methodologies, increase in specialisation and the development of traditional project planning. The re-emergence of geometallurgy in the late 20th century required the relevant functional units and disciplines to collaborate as a team. This necessitates a common understanding that the geometallurgical program’s goals must be obtained, which requires clear and consistent communication, particularly with the modern trend of virtual teams.A multi-dimensional construct is proposed to assist in providing a consistent approach in the communication of the context and purpose of both general and specific geometallurgical programs, thus simplifying communication. This geometallurgical construct consists of the dimensions of process span, response knowledge, variability knowledge, spatial knowledge, application and project phase in relation to extraction process(es) applied to geological materials from a mineral deposit. These dimensions are then linked to the phase of mineral project development in which the geometallurgical program is being applied, which ranges from advanced exploration through to operational execution. This paper outlines the multi-dimensional construct with examples of how the context, purpose and scope of geometallurgical programs can be clearly delineated and communicated.

This paper describes measures taken by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) to minimise the risk of acid rock drainage (ARD) resulting from mining operations at its Mt Fubilan porphyry copper-gold mine in the remote Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea. The risk of acid generation and metal leaching as a result of oxidation of these sulfidic deposits has long been recognised by OTML. In 1998, OTML instigated the ARD Management Program to fully evaluate these risks and to formulate, if necessary, trial and implement appropriate management strategies. In implementing the ARD Management Program, OTML has adopted a risk management approach consisting of five stages: risk identification, risk analysis, risk assessment, risk treatment, and review and monitor. Significant progress has been made in relation to risk identification, analysis and assessment. The work currently underway to put in place a comprehensive risk treatment and review process will ultimately determine the success or otherwise of this approach.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

Alternative processes for converting coal to liquid products and their stage of development are outlined. The merits of hydrogenationprocesses in general, and the solvent refined coal process in particular, are stressed. Bench scale experimental hydrogenation procedures used by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (ACIRL) to study the liquefaction of Australian coals and correlations between properties of such coals and their conversion to liquid products are described. Factors involved in assessing investment and operating costs for modern hydrogenation based coal refineries of different capacities are described with reference to a recent study undertaken in N.S.W. The significance of coal properties such as yield and yield structure of total liquid products and how they and other factors can influence the economics of the coal refining operations are discussed.

Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

Lead concentrate from the Isa and Hilton lead-zinc concentrators of Mount lsa Mines Limited is smelted at Mount Isa to produce a lead-silver bullion. This bullion is cast into four tonne blocks and shipped to Britannia Refined Metals Co Ltd, NorthDeet, England and to plants in Asia for refining and marketing. The traditional treatment stages at Mount lsa are sintering, smelting, and drossing and casting, with some of the sinter plant feed being pre-treated through an Isasmelt plant.A commercial scale lsasmelt based lead smelter was commissioned in early 1991.

Studies were carried out on dissolution and oxidation of iron powder in ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution using oxygen over pressures. Cobalt and nickel losses during iron oxidation under different conditions were investigated. Regression equations were derived for percent cobalt loss and percent iron oxidation using ammonia, ammonium carbonate and oxygen partial pressure as the variables. The equations were tested for adequacy using Fisher&apos;s test. Cobalt losses increased with the increase of initial cobalt concentration and about 400 mg/l of cobalt was lost from a solution containing 500 mg/l cobalt. A maximum of about 80 mg/l nickel was lost from 1 g/l nickel containing solution, and this loss remained the same even when the nickel concentration was increased to 7.5 g/l.

The Que River Mine is a small under-ground base and precious metals mine located in north-western Tasmania. Current production rate is 220,000 tonne/yr from reserves grading 0.37% copper, 7.1% lead, 12.2% zinc, 195 g/tonne silver and 3.4 g/tonne gold.Ore is mined using longhole open stoping techniques. Cemented fill is placed in primary stopes to permit safe and efficient recovery of pillars. The operation is trackless with both shaft and decline access from surface.Ore produced is trucked 40 km by road to be sold to the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Ltd., for treatment at their Rosebery concentrator.

Arsenic is classified chemically as a metalloid. That is, it has properties intermediate between those of metals and non-metals. Like non-metals, it combines with many metals to form arsenides (eg arsenopyrite FeAsS, niccolite NiAs, sperrylite PtAs2), but like metals it forms sulphides and oxides (eg realgar AsS, arsenolite As203). Arsenic is distributed widely in the Earth&apos;s crust at an average concentration of 1.5 mg/kg and is present in more than 150 minerals.

Traditional in situ fan flow test methods under accepted standards require determinations to be made of both static pressures and total pressures during testing. This is to determine the resultant velocity pressures, which are vital in the accurate determination of the final fan airflow. These crucial velocity pressure (Vp) determinations are normally determined using simple manometric instrumentation such as an electronic manometer or an inclined liquid filled manometer. There is relatively little noise or fluctuation in the static pressure determinations and they can be quite easily and accurately recorded. There is almost always considerable fluctuation in the velocity pressure determinations though due to the highly turbulent and irregular velocity profile normally found in such in situ installations. This velocity turbulence means that the recording of such data is subject to random human error as the observer tries to average such fluctuations mentally during the observation period. Worse than this, and in the extreme, the recording of such velocity pressure data could actually easily be misreported if, for some reason, persons chose to do so.The author has devised a field method using highly accurate quartz crystal logging barometers to objectively record these velocity pressures. The method eliminates the ability to either mistakenly or intentionally misreport these crucial velocity pressures and is carried out in parallel with the recognised methodology, so result comparisons can be drawn. As such, a far greater level of confidence can be achieved in the final flow performance results than using the traditional more subjective method. Further to this it is difficult and almost impossible to refute the results using this ancillary substantiation method.The accurate determination of fan flows due to the impost of the carbon tax has taken on much more significance given the financial impacts in Australia at this time. The methodology detailed herein can be applied equally for both fan flow compliance testing and the verification of mine airflow data for greenhouse gas emission evaluations.The paper utilises the results of one 24-point pitot traverse to demonstrate the various findings. These include the very wide range of velocity pressures, which were logged at most of the measuring stations. It also illustrates how the method is utilised and compares the results derived from both this method and the more subjective traditional method along with the benefits of logging the velocity pressure results during the testing process.CITATION:Rowland, J A, 2013. In June 1992, the High Court of Australia recognised native title of the Meriam people over parts of the Mer Island in the Torres Strait as a form of common law. The Court also indicated that native title may have survived European settlement of the mainland Australia where it had not been extinguished by Governments and Aboriginal people have maintained their traditional connection with the land. The decision meant that two systems of land law were seen as existing side by side in Australia: ò one which derived from grants from the Crown under laws passed by Parliament; ò another which derived from the diverse laws and customs of the many Aboriginal groups in Australia.
