A simulation of the fluid flow, minera- logical and chemical aspects of in situ leaching is being developed for application to the recovery of metals from unbroken, naturally jointed rock. The fluid flow aspect has been developed. The rock is assumed to have a double-fracture property. A major joint set is responsible for bulk flow of solution, while a minor joint set, intersecting with the major set, allows the solution to contact the reactive minerals. The two-dimensional fluid flow through the major joint set is analysed by a streamline model for a particular well pattern. The other important components of the model are described briefly.

Before presentIng my address I wish to acknowledge the honour which has been conferred on me by my appointment to the position of President of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.It is a matter of great concern to us all to find our Empire at war. I am confident that, as was the case in the war of 1914-1918, members of this Institute and of kindred Institutes and Associations will contribute in full to the Empire's needs and that in the end our cause shall triumph.I think it appropriate that I should take as the subject of my address that of the Broken Hill Lead-Silver-Zinc Industry. The subject matter of this address has been confined to the operations of Mining, Ore Dressing, Lead Smelting and Refining and production of Electrolytic Zinc in Australasia. The review of the Broken Hill Lead-SilverZinc Industry would not, of course, be complete without reference to those Australian industries which trace their origin to the Broken Hill field, but· it is thought that an outline of these industries would make thIs review too extensive.HISTORICALMany efforts have been made to translate the early history of Broken Hill and its subsequent growth throughout the years into one of the wor~d's most famous mining fields in the form of a simple story.

The most appropriate technology needs to be applied to premining geological investigations to achieve reliable data for predictions of geological conditions ahead of mining. The paper describes the application of various investigatory techniques in BHP's Illawarra Collieries which are used to provide reliable assessments of structure, the nature of the coal and surrounding strata,, and the fluids contained in the strata. The techniques used include surface seismic, in-seam seismic, borehole drilling, electromagnetic and aeromagnetic surveys, hydrogeological investigations and in-mine mapping. The results of various case studies are presented as examples of the application of techniques.

Traditionally, operators on mineral flotation plants have relied on visual inspection of the froth surface when making adjustments to process set-points. Machine vision systems are being developed to relate froth surface descriptors, which can be consistently measured in real time, to flotation performance. By investigating the impact of various selected operating variables on both froth surface characteristics and metallurgical performance it is possible to develop a management strategy for the control and optimisation of the process. This paper presents the results of testwork conducted at Kennecott copper mine which investigates the relationship between the froth colour and the concentrate grade and discusses the factors which affect the froth colour. This work shows that the main factors that influence the froth colour in this system are molybdenum, copper and iron concentrate grade, pulp and concentrate per cent solids and pulp iron grade.It goes on to develop models to predict the concentrate grade based on colour information and velocity and stability information. It also shows that the most accurate prediction is made with combined colour and stability information.

When an iron orebody nears its end of life, the extracted material can become increasingly problematic to handle. Higher moisture content occurs as larger portions of originally-below-water-table material is mined, which in some deposits is accompanied by further changes in physical and/or chemical properties present along the edges of the orebody. Plant delays related to problematic material have affected all of BHP’s mining hubs to various degrees. Following the recent successful work in Yandi, where the development of an index to quantify the handleability of channel iron ore deposits resulted in an increase in extracted volumes and an extension to the expected life-of-mine, the value of implementing similar indices for bedrock iron ore deposits has been recognised. A materials handling index has been developed by combining observed empirical relationships between material properties and processing plant performance. Indices for each deposit were further refined and optimised by implementing a back-testing strategy which facilitated an understanding of what weighting or scaling each of the contributing components should carry to yield the highest success rate of predicting actual delays at a given plant. Currently materials handling indices are deployed to all mine sites and are made available in block models as well as calculated for individual blasthole and production samples. Values in block models are obtained by predicting the required properties using machine learning models, whereas hyperspectral data is used to ‘measure’ some of those properties on a sample level. This paper discusses the work that has been undertaken to obtain materials handling indices, the testing that has been done to optimise them, and what processes have been developed to ensure the best metrics are being used in the different planning and scheduling horizons to optimise extraction.

The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia Limited (ER&S) operates a copper smelting and refining plant and is situated close to the heart of the highly industrialised area of Port Kembla. In March, 1982 the Company entered into an undertaking with the State Pollution Control Commission (SPCC) to monitor ambient levels of sulphur dioxide (S02) gases present in the atmosphere in the surrounding urban area. Despite the use of a 200 metre high stack for dispersal of the smelter waste gas stream at ER&S, two local suburbs, Warrawong and Primbee were experiencing on occasions high ambient concentrations of S02 resulting in discomfort to local residents. In late March 1982, ER&S installed a highly advanced S02 monitoring system to continuously monitor the levels at Warrawong. The system was extended to include S02 monitoring at Primbee in November 1982, and further extended in June 1983, to include an input of meteorological data. Initially the system was designed to monitor and react to high concentrations of S02 at either of the two monitoring stations. Currently however, refinement is taking place to allow a predictive nature to be built into the system such that it not only reacts to an adverse situation but can predict weather patterns likely to cause high concentrations and thus avoid these events. The entire system is still undergoing a growth and development period, however the results obtained to date are pleasing to both the Company and the SPCC.

The radiolarian biostratigraphy of the western part of the Gympie Province, north of Brisbane, has been examined. This part of the province comprises mainly the Amamoor beds and the Gympie Group, which have been assigned Permian ages on the basis of localised marine macrofossils. This study has shown that the Amamoor beds and the Gympie Group include older strata than previously supposed.The Amamoor beds consist of at least two tectonic units, namely a melange unit (unit A) and a well stratified sequence of sedimentary rocks (unit B). The former unit, regarded as an accretionary subduction complex, contains chert blocks ranging from Late Devonian to Earliest Carboniferous, while the latter unit yields Permian radiolarians. Latest Devonian to Earliest Carboniferous bedded cherts occur in sequence previously mapped as Amamoor beds and Gympie Group.

A prediction technique for support perfor- mance of hydraulic backfill in narrow stopes is applied to two stopes separated vertically by a sill pillar. Predicted stope wall closures and fill pressures compare favorably with field measurements taken over a period of several years at two mines in the Coeur d'Alene dis- trict. Stope wall closure and peak pillar stress can be substantially reduced by improved fill quality within a practicable range of fill and rock properties.

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a copper-gold mine located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Currently, the district produces about 240 000 tonnes per day (tpd) of which about 45 000 tpd come from the DOZ Block Cave and the rest is mined from the Grasberg Open Pit. Over the next ten years, ore production from large block caves in the area is expected to reach about 200 000 tpd, replacing a large part of the production from the Grasberg Pit. Block cave mining alters the hydrological characteristics of the area being mined and when the cave expresses itself at the surface in the form of subsidence, it increases the entrapment area for surface water. Operating a large block cave mine in a region with an average annual rainfall of 5500 mm in steep mountainous terrain and complex geological and hydrological features presents a challenging scenario for dewatering or depressurisation of the area. The high rainfall infiltration and entrapment in stacked mines operating within an essentially single orebody, coupled with the presence of fine-grained and clayey material within the draw points of the block cave, creates mud rushes or wet muck spills, which can endanger the personnel and interrupt production. This paper outlines the problems caused by high water inflow into the DOZ Block Cave and the efforts undertaken to ensure the safety of the miners and continued achievement of desired production rates from underground mining in the district.

Uncertainty in prediction and modelling of geological (physical) ore continuity in geometrically complex ore deposits is a key risk factor in mining. Reducing geometric uncertainty of hard-boundary ore/waste contacts and related geological features improves the efficiency of local mineral resource estimation and reserve calculation, mine/stope planning, ore control and in-mine exploration. Detailed underground mapping of serial-level drives provides a continuous record of the characteristics and contact configuration of ore, as well as crucial ore-related geological features that are required to resolve geometrical variability when closely spaced drilling proves inadequate or is cost-prohibitive. The mapping-based approach described in this paper re-establishes the focus on the geology of the orebody by incorporating high-value, detailed geologic mine mapping information. Mapped ore-related configurations and relationships, recorded on a succession of faces or on a series of levels, provide the basis for 3D interpolation and extrapolation of the local geologic continuity of an orebody. Correlative points representing locations of key ore-related geologic features on each face or level are linked by 3D polylines or trajectories forming a coherent geometrical framework. The coherent progression of geometric changes mapped by these trajectories reveals the overall ‘dynamic’ of the geometrical framework, as well as the spatial tendencies of its geological constituents. Distinct sets of ore control trajectories are selected from within the framework and are used in the construction of alternative geological ore continuity models. As mining proceeds, alternative models are evaluated, and are then either refined or rejected. The geometrical framework is used to evaluate theoretical models and practical heuristics, focus exploration targeting and inform and guide all aspects of mine geology in active mines. This approach also lends itself to analysis of global ore continuity in the re-evaluation of mature or abandoned mines. Its use is particularly effective in geometrically complex orebodies such as the West Branch orebody and the orebodies of No 2 mine of the Balmat-Edwards-Pierrepont zinc district, which are used to illustrate the method. The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.

This paper is a preliminary report of research on the Mount Morgan gold-copper deposit being done at the Division of Mineralogy, CSIRO. Fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope measurements were made on a suite of 11 samples collected by the staff of Geopeko Ltd. This suite contained representatives of the main ore and rock types of the deposit. Homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions measured on quartz from 8 of the 11 samples, ranged from 172¦C to 276¦C and to this must be added a pressure correction (in this case, up to 50¦C) to obtain the formation temperature of the mineral. Sulphur isotope measurements were made on 34 sulphides from 8 of the 11 samples. The 6S values form a well defined group ranging from -0.5%oto +3.6%owith a mean of +2.4%c. Although the preliminary data do not indicate unequivocally the origin of the deposit they do impose restraints on the wide ranging suggestions that have been put forward. This work is complementary to the paper of Dr G. Gibbons who has described other mineralogical aspects of the Mount Morgan deposit, based on a more extensive suite of Samples.

In the hard rocks of the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden and Finland underground works have a long tradition. Today the subsurface has been taken into use for a wide variety of purposes. In this paper only the more uncon- ventional examples are described such as caverns for drinking water, sand bunkers, molasses silos, wine and liquor stores, cold stores, heat storage, waste disposal and state archives. The particular use of unlined high pressure tunnels and socalled air-cushions for hydropower schemes is discussed. The dual use of subsurface air-raid shelters for sports activities seems to be a special Nordic tradition. Some cost figures are given and the advantages of using the underground is Discussed.

Mine closure planning integrated into life-of-mine (LOM) planning during the operational phase consists of many subcategories. One of these subcategories that needs to be fully integrated into the LOM planning is that of water management planning. Issues arise when mine water management infrastructure, which is required post-mine closure, is only considered closer to the end of LOM. Once the mine is closed monitoring is focused on water quality as an indicator of closure performance, hence inadequate upfront post-mining water management planning or integration into operations will result in environmental harm. The lack of considering post-mining water management is not uncommon in LOM planning. Poor mine site water management and planning are a wide reaching problem for the mining industry. Numerous active mines have been issued with environmental notices and penalties for contaminated water discharge; including issues with abandoned mines now being cared for by governments all over the world.Mitigating sources of water contamination caused by existing and closed mine sites that are leaching pollutants might be impractical, due to inaccessibility to the contaminants or final landform topography. The opportunity to consider and introduce post-closure required mine water management infrastructure is lost once the waste facilities are constructed. Mitigating contamination is made more problematic with mines located in remote areas, serviced by dedicated roads, water supply, electrical supply, etc. It is expected that these services will be decommissioned or drastically reduced, once closure is reached making remedial work much harder. Inadequate planning, to ensure access and easily maintainable water management infrastructure, could lead to erosion and contamination going unnoticed. There are numerous examples of poor mine water management practices in Africa, Asia, Australia, South and North America. In the United States more than 23 000 km of streams are affected by pollution sourced from some 50 000 abandoned or mature mine sites (DeGraff, 2007).CITATION:Boshoff, H J J, ?2014. The Wiluna mining operations are centred near the township of Wiluna 750 kilometres north-east of Perth and 600 kilometres east of Geraldton.The Wiluna gold mines produced over two million ounces of gold, predominantly by roasting the refractory sulphide ores, before closing in 1947. In the period 1984 to 1992, 668 000 ounces of gold has been produced from free milling oxide ores and the retreatment of tailing. A plant capable of treating the refractory sulphide ores using the bacterial oxidation, Biox technique was commissioned in March, 1993.The Wiluna lode deposits are hosted by a sequence of very low grade metamorphosed mafic flows at the northern end of the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt. A strike slip fault system provided conduits for fluid migration; ore deposition occurred at favourable sites along the faults. Satellite mines at Gourdis and Wiluna South provide laterite and lode style oxide ores.The different styles of deposit and ore types at the Wiluna mining operations require a flexible approach to resource estimation and grade control practices.

The Charters Towers goldfield in northeastern Queensland produced over 206 tonnes of gold from gold-quartz veins hosted by Mid-Palaeozoic granodiorite, tonalite, diorite and to a lesser extent amphibolite-grade meta-sedimentary schist and meta-igneous rock. Mineralisation occurs in grouped, moderately dipping shear zones with altered wallrock rafts and a complex network of quartz veins.Over 75 per cent of the production came from three main vein systems in the central goldfield: the Brilliant, Day Dawn and Towers Hill vein systems.The Brilliant vein system is hosted by undeformed tonalite and contains north-plunging oreshoots on a north-dipping main fissure and on shorter east-dripping hangingwall fissures. The Day Dawn vein system is localised along a north-dipping dyke at the contact of two deformed granitoids in a brittly reactivated mylonite, where horizontal oreshoot plunges may be related to the original megascopic undulations in that structure. The Towers Hill vein system is hosted in two granodiorite types and has multiple ore controls.Structural analysis indicates that the distribution of the oreshoots within the vein systems is variously controlled by the primary fabric and igneous contacts of the granitoid host rocks. Splaying, changes in dip, and fissure intersections are the main controls. The largest vein systems are both in reactivated shallow-dipping mylonite, or in fissures in younger undeformed granitoids. Each vein system lies in a separate structural domain, usually where older east-striking structures are preserved.

Over the past five years, commodity prices have been high and the focus of many plants has been æthe more metal the better, at whatever costÆ. In the recent economic crisis, the focus has shifted more to reducing the cost of production and operating at higher efficiency. Since 2002, JKTech has partnered with the Century mine in north-west Queensland to transfer technology and understanding through the good, bad and ugly economic environments, using methodology and techniques arising from research at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and other research institutions around the world as part of the AMIRA International P9 Project. The JKTech studies were concentrated around the primary zinc circuit. During this period, Century expanded the primary zinc regrind capacity, installed additional scavenging capacity, installed and commissioned a Jameson cell for concentrate cleaning in the carbon preflotation circuit, and installed additional primary grinding capacity. Flotation circuit models were developed for each of the survey campaigns and enabled opportunities for further improvement to be identified, implemented and tested in the subsequent campaign.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.
