The moisture content of iron ore is important in handling, stockpiling, transport and further processing operations. Typically these ores contain both `free' and `bound' moisture, the latter being moisture that is not removed in a conventional laboratory determination of moisture by air drying at 105¦C, and it is the free moisture that is important in dust control and ore handling. The CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering has previously developed and commercialised gauges, based on capacitance and microwave techniques, for the on-belt determination of moisture in coal and minerals. However, these gauges determine total moisture, and have a different sensitivity to free and bound moisture in the material analysed. Consequently, the accuracy of determining total or free moisture alone may be significantly affected by variations in the bound moisture content. The requirement for secondary egress from underground workings has long been regulated in Australia. Escape way systems have evolved from simple airleg rising ladders and timber ladders to steel galvanised ladders and more recently fully enclosed polyethylene ladders.The polyethylene ladder, Safescape Laddertube, was introduced to the underground mining industry in 2010. It is an enclosed cylindrical modular plastic ladder designed for use in underground escape ways and access ways. Since its first installation in May 2010, the Laddertube has been installed in 43 mines across four countries, totalling 8800 m of ladders installed to December 2013.The Cracow Gold mine is one operation using Laddertube, located 500 km north-west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Upon discovering and developing both the Empire and Roses Pride orebodies, a safe and economically viable secondary egress system and surface primary ventilation exhaust shafts were necessary to support development and production activities to these workings. The need arose to merge these two critical requirements together between surface and underground mine workings some 200 m and 400 m respectively for each orebody. Neither egress has intermediate access points within their full service length from top to bottom. Several options were considered, the preferable and most feasible method adopted was Laddertube.The longest egress length requiring Laddertube within the two vertical surface exhaust shafts was 400 m long, within a 3.5 m diameter shaft. Due to the length of the vertical Laddertube system in both egresses, personnel are to be assisted by mechanical means using the Extended Ladder Climb Assist system.The Gossan Hill mine also uses Laddertube for their escape ways. Part of the Golden Grove operation, Gossan Hill is an underground sublevel open stoping mine located in the mid-west of Western Australia.With a considerable mine life remaining and a history of acidic water and stress related deterioration in vertical openings, the mine operators sought an escape way solution that would provide for the long-term needs of Gossan Hill. Laddertube was selected due to its non-corrosive properties and the ability to fill in around the ladder way to provide stability to the raise opening.Laddertube is a recent development in escape way systems, and is effectively being applied in a variety of operations, meeting the specific needs of underground mines.CITATION:Durkin, S, Hawkins, B and Lawrence, V, 2014. The increasing exhaustion of raw materials entails the exploitation of poorer orebodies where the target mineral occurs frequently in a very fine dissemination. Consequently it is necessary to grind more and more fine to achieve an adequate mineral liberation. In other words, it is of fundamental importance to know what size one should grind in order to avoid the following detrimental situations: 1. Excessive grinding - giving rise to the generation of ultra-fine slime particles which may be lost in the ulterior concentration process and simultaneously leading to higher energy consumption. 2. Incomplete grinding - giving rise to insufficient liberation and consequently leading to considerable losses of the valuable components in the tailings. Although this issue constitutes one of the most important steps in mineral processing, little research has been done compared to other processes, mainly due to the fastidious experimental work required. This paper describes a complete and integrated system of image analysis, where some algorithms to determine automatically the degree of li beration, for different levels of grinding, are proposed. These algorithms, mainly based on mathematical morphology theory were tested with images obtained from polished sections of different grain size fractions. Cases studies on a complex sulphide ore from an important copper and tin deposit located in the South of Portugal are discussed. Samples of the unbroken ore are also studied by image analysis to predict the degree of liberation obtained according to the fineness of grinding.

Experimental work is described in which extremely dilute aurocyanide liquors are treated with novel surface-active complexing agents to produce a hydrophobic aurocyanide species. Subsequent aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of such species at the air-water interface and the aurocyanide complex is transferred to a froth concentrate. A detailed performance assessment of this process is made and this knowledge used in the design of a pilot plant facility. Early results indicate the feasibility of the selective recovery of aurocyanide ions from reclaimed residue dam water (approximately 0.2ppm Au) with upgrade ratios of the order 180:1. A further study was made applying ion flotation to the recovery of gold from a carbon-in-pulp (CIL) feed liquor (approximately 1.0ppm Au). The probable economics of this process compared to conventional CIL processing is also described. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The particular underground operation relating to this paper is a gold producer and has an orebody predominately consisting of rhyolite and marcasites pyrite. The ore has been identified as being reactive to nitrates.Operations currently utilise two twin boom Tamrock™ Super-Drill Jumbos for development mining. Capital (waste) headings have a nominal size of 7 m wide × 6 m high, while ore headings are designed at 5 m wide × 5 m high, with the lower reaches of the mine narrowing down to a 4.5 m × 5 m design. Production drilling is currently undertaken with an Atlas-Copco L6 Solo. Due to the reactivity of the ore, inhibited emulsion phase bulk explosives are used for all blasting activities, with electronic detonators utilised in the production sequence.Sublevel shrinkage stoping is utilised when the orebody is stronger than the host rock. After blasting the ore, and during extraction, the surrounding host rock cannot maintain integrity and it ‘collapses’ on top of the ore. Gravity forces this collapsing rock to follow the blasted ore through the drawpoints.The highest risk involved with sublevel shrinkage stoping is the necessity for charge crews to work upon ‘rills’ at the drawpoints, which are occasionally unstable, to charge the next blast ring to be fired. To overcome this issue a loading technique called ‘precharging’ is used whereby two to three rings are charged, but only the first ring is fired. This technique can minimise risks by taking the charge crew away from the rill and brow.As this mine contains hot and reactive ground, strict guidelines from the Australian Explosives Industry and Safety Group Inc (AEISG) are adhered to. The Lihir deposit in Papua New Guinea (PNG) contains an estimated mineable reserve of 454t (14.6M oz) of gold in refractory sulphide ore. The Lihir Joint Venture has submitted a proposal to the PNG Government to develop an open pit mine and to install a process plant and associated infrastructure facilities on Lihir Island. The proposed process plant will employ whole-ore pressure oxidation technology, has a design capacity of 2.825Mt/a of ore containing 7.20 sulphide sulphur, and is expected to average 19.3t/a (620,000 oz/a) in gold production during its first 12 years of operation.An extensive program of process development testwork and feasibility engineering was completed to establish the process plant design for the Lihir Project. Summary results of this test-work as well as key design criteria, the process flowsheet, and major equipment selected for the commercial plant are presented and discussed.

Tailings dam failures continue to occur worldwide at an unacceptable rate, averaging two events annually over the last 100 years. Furthermore, tailings dams continue to grow in size, increasing the potential release of tailings and water should they fail. Tailings are generally deposited in a slurry state, with the potential to flow if containment is lost. Understanding the generation and propagation of excess pore water pressure on failure is critical to predicting the flow and run-out of tailings. This paper presents numerical modelling using the material point method indicating that tailings run-out processes may be self-enhanced by the excess pore water pressure induced during the collapse of the containment. Moreover, it is shown that geomorphological features, such as the slope and its surface roughness downstream of the tailings dam, influence the pore water pressure dynamics upstream of the advancing toe.CITATION:Llano-Serna, M A, Bu, L and Williams, D J, 2018. The sustainability of mining projects is linked to informed investment decisions based on public reporting of exploration and mineral resource estimation results. In Australia, public reporting guidelines are established by the Joint Ore Reserves Committee reporting code through the JORC Code (2012). Although the assessment of uncertainty in the results reported is a requirement, this is often communicated qualitatively and evaluated subjectively. This can become a liability particularly in the early stages of mining projects when spatial domains of geological interpretation and mineralisation envelopes inform resource estimations’ reliability. A recent review of JORC reports found no reports used quantitative assessments of the geological interpretation or mineral resource estimation envelopes, and 27 per cent of reports did not address the question of quality of geological interpretation. Reports that did address the quality used 19 different terms to communicate quality. This work presents methodologies for quantitative uncertainty assessment and communication and explores how they could be applied in public reporting practice. Quantitative uncertainty reporting would benefit mine planning and financial modelling as they normally assume the geology is 100 per cent right (since no error is reported or only a single deterministic model is provided). The complexity, cost, and additional work of doing a quantitative assessment could hinder a straightforward implementation. This could be overcome if mining companies budget for quantitative uncertainty assessment and associated professional development. A compulsory requirement for the inclusion of uncertainty assessments in public reporting or adopting standardised subjective language would improve industry practice.

"This paper presents the second part of a study of the assessment of rock stress inputs on the performance of various new mining designs at the Ok Tedi large open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. Over the years, four programs of rock stress measurement have been completed at Ok Tedi, each providing different interpretations of the in situ field stresses. Details of three of these programs and interpretations are provided in the precursor to this paper, entitled ‘Rock Stresses at Ok Tedi, Papua New Guinea’ (Lee et al, 2014).This paper explains how the various stress interpretations were utilised in the modelling of the proposed new open pit and underground mining excavations, comparing where possible their expected effects on stability. The modelled performance of three specific mine components have been discussed here as case studies, including: the below-pit drainage tunnel, as the floor of the open pit workings is mined down from 350?m above, to within just 75?m above the crown of the tunnel the stability of the 1000?m high slope of the proposed West Wall cutback the proposed sublevel open stoping extraction sequence in the Gold Coast orebody beneath the East Wall, for which only the likely ‘worst-case’ stress regime was used to assess sequencing and stability issues.The benefits of scheduling the collection of detailed rock stress measurements and other input data from a range of different sources at various stages of the projects are discussed.Alternative in situ stress models have less stability impact on open pit slopes than on underground mine excavations.CITATION:de Bruyn, I A, Baczynski, N R P, Lee, M F, Mills, K W, Mylvaganam, J, and Prado, D A, 2014. The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

Significant coal reserves in New South Wales lie underneath major bodies of natural and stored surface waters. In order that mining can occur safely and without any adverse effect on the surface, various statutory provisions and administrative guidelines have been framed for regulating the surface and sub-surface strata disturbance. There are particular bases for the existing guidelines and the assumptions which were made in their choice. Evaluation of the guidelines in the light of the knowledge gained during the last ten years indicates that they are conservative in some cases and can be made less restrictive without lowering the safety standards. The suggested changes include reduced width for pillars in both bord and pillar first workings and panel and pillar workings, and increased level of extraction for a given degree of subsidence. Changes, if implemented, would lead to increased coal recovery.

Didipio gold-copper mine operation is situated in the island of Luzon, approximately 270 km north of Manila in the Philippines, in an area of high seasonal rainfall. The hydrogeological water flow model implied that there would be high connectivity between regional structures and underground operations. This model predicted that underground mine groundwater inflows were expected to quickly rise as the decline progressed to a peak of 510 L/s. Designing a capital pump station to deal with 510 L/s has its own challenges, however developing the decline down to the required level, always dealing with 300 L/s of water and constructing the pump station is extremely challenging and required a robust water management plan and mine design. When dealing with expected high volumes of water, underground mine design and scheduling plays a key role in protecting electrical infrastructure, equipment, secondary pumps, and the decline from flooding. A good drainage system and controlled dewatering plan is essential for safety and progress. This paper details the dewatering techniques and mine designs required to accomplish decline development with high water inflows as used in the Didipio project. It will describe the learnings and outcomes that are achievable with a flexible design, as new structures are mapped, and water intersections are increased. It also highlights the potential for adaptability in mine planning to provide evolving improvements or to evade problems that are expected from the constant reconciliation of data recorded during development.

Design and operating conditions of large size mechanical flotation cells were evaluated by comparing them with actual operating conditions in a plant. The objective was to determine the time scale-up factor, typically based on empirical rules. Experiments were conducted on the rougher flotation circuit at Minera Escondida Ltd. The circuit consisted of self-aerated mechanical cells of 160 m3, arranged in six parallel banks with nine cells each. The rougher circuit flotation kinetics were evaluated from direct sampling and local mass balances around each cell of the bank. Adjusted overall mass balances were also developed. This information was used to fit different kinetic flotation models, and it was found that the rectangular distribution function was the most appropriate to describe the distributed rate constant for industrial operation. Then, a rougher flotation simulator was developed to describe the actual operation in terms of the operating variables (mass flowrate, solid percentage, feed grade) and the actual volumetric flowrate entering to each cell. In this study feed pulp samples were taken in parallel from the rougher circuit and were simultaneously floated in the laboratory. The kinetic behaviour was then modelled at a laboratory batch scale in order to determine the time scale-up factor between laboratory batch flotation data and industrial size flotation. The time scale-up factor observed for large sized cells, 160 m3, was found to be reasonably similar to those previously determined for self-aerated mechanical cells, but of lower size, operating at similar recoveries. In addition, the relative effect of mixing, between laboratory batch and an industrial flotation bank, was quantified by the parameter, separating the impact that kinetic and mixing changes have on the time scale-up factor. In general, the rougher flotation operation was found to reach the predicted metallurgical target, and the optimal separability criterion was also respected. The diagnostic generates information about the internal state of the process and helps to identify potential improvements for design, operation and control of the circuit.

Current climate change projections suggest both an increase in the intensity of significant rainfall events and an increase in the variability of rainfall in some regions of Australia. It is necessary for mine site owners and operators to understand the effects that this potential shift in climate may have on their operations. The ability to maintain compliance with discharge regulations and operational security for those sites that rely on surface water run-off harvesting may be negatively impacted if some current climate change projections are realised. Although current regulations require the preparation of water management plans, these are generally developed using historical climate records for the site in question and as such do not give any indication of a siteÆs resilience to the influences of climate change.This study compares design and operational considerations for a case study mine site using historical rainfall records and modified records representing climate change projections. The future climate models are invariably broad scale and are limited in their capacity to be downscaled to a reasonable resolution for developing a site water balance. Instead the local historical data set has been modified to concentrate precipitation to peak periods and propagated through the model. The study looks at the siteÆs response to the potential changes in climate.It is shown that if current climate change projections are realised, this will have a significant effect on both the necessary size of designed surface water infrastructure and operational considerations on-site. A discussion is presented on the potential risks that climate change presents to mine sites and the range of options that could be considered to mitigate these risks. Controlling the access of equipment, and people, has become more critical over the last few years for improving productivity and to meet safety responsibilities imposed by legislated obligations to have safety management systems. Hence Mine Site Technologies (MST) has spent the last three years completing the development of the tagging system to meet the mining industryÆs requirements, particularly streamlining access control. The basic tagging system tracks active Tags carried by personnel, or attached to vehicles and equipment, within underground zones. These Tags are detected (read) by Beacons placed strategically throughout the mine. As a Tag, or Tags, go past a Beacon they are read and the information transmitted back to the main database PC. This allows the current whereabouts of personnel and equipment to be known, as well as the history of their movements. The objectives of implementing the TRACKER Tagging System at Oaky No 1 Coal Mine were to: maintain a count of personnel inbye a particular point, and can alarm when a pre-set number is reached (eg the limit imposed by availability of SCSRÆs, etc); maintain a count of vehicles (and vehicle type) inbye a point, and can alarm if when a pre-set number is reached (eg when rated diesel units exceeds the limit for the ventilation present in that zone); manage the vehicle fleet, by keeping track of various vehicles underground better control and dispatch management of the equipment is achieved; keep track of equipment, knowing the location of equipment (such as forks, baskets, pumps, fans, etc) where last used or stored will minimise the risk of losing gear and assist in keeping inventory to a minimum; and locate personnel in emergency situations, by placing read Beacons throughout the mine the location of all personnel can be known in real time so that in the event of an emergency, their withdrawal can be monitored.

Elastoplastic parameter is a parameter that describe how much materials behave elastically up to certain stress states and plastically thereafter (Hudson and Harrison, 1997). In the continuum analysis, two main parameters of the elastoplastic parameter are modulus elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. In the slope, elastoplastic parameter holds the main role for stability related to deformation in ductile type of rock. There’s a limitation to determine elastic or plastic deformation at the field for ductile rock type. Field manifestation commonly showed that there was no accumulation zone during and after the sliding failure mechanism, in other hand, at the research area, manifestation of deformation at the toe of slope only indicated by bulging shape. This paper will focus at the sliding failure occurred at Coal mining Pit Y owned by Arutmin Indonesia, which according to failure investigation report similar with the condition described above. This paper also will be based on two hypotheses, first hypothesis is claystone rock mass has not been reached plastic deformation yet and the second hypothesis is there is a chance that elastoplastic parameter of the rock mass has been changed during the deformation/sliding failure process. Research method of this paper are back analysis using probabilistic analysis in Finite Element Method (FEM), which conducted before and after failure. Then, the result of the displacement or deformation of the analysis will be checked with the actual deformation shape. Meanwhile, the change of the elastoplastic parameter will be analysed and interpreted. This paper hopefully able to be developed to study about elastoplastic behaviour of rock mass in actual condition and the influence of another uncertainty factor which determine the slope stability.

"Mines around the world are inherently and operationally diverse. Current methodologies for the design of mine ventilation and cooling infrastructure involve controlling major safety and health hazards. Globally, it can be estimated that mine ventilation systems from various commoditiescirculate over 150 000 m3/s of exhaust air through shafts. Additionally, over 2 000 000 workersare transported every day through shafts in labour-intensive mining countries like China, India,Southern Africa, and the Americas. A key objective of this paper is to share experiences and provide a case for the revision of ætime-honouredÆ ventilation design parameters based on a benchmarking exercise on design exhaust shaft velocity from various global operations (gold, diamond, platinum, coal and base metals). An active fi eld observation on exhaust shaft velocity has indicated that, regardless of the commodity or continent where the mine operates, almost all life-of-mine (LOM) design parameters provided are in the same range of 20 m/s to 22 m/s, which is not convincing considering signifi cant variations exist in shaft depths, geography, commodity, operating and capital costs. From a due diligence perspective, there are no documented views that are available on the most widely used design exhaust air velocity. Based on the global exhaust shaft velocity data, it is noted that a significant portion of shaft velocities are outside the current design velocity of 20 m/s (some operating up to 30 m/s) and other signifi cant portions of the exhaust shafts operate in the critical velocity range. In the case of Australian coal mines, limited data suggests that none of the mines have ever reached the LOM design exhaust shaft velocity. It is self-evident that when the shafts are not operating at their design quantities either the mine system resistance is low or the ventilation and main fan is operating ineffi ciently. The most common reasons given for not reviewing the shaft system were, ætime-honouredÆ design parameter are being used and cannot be changed, mine fan pressure limits, possible fan blade damage, possible spontaneous combustion risks, leakage or simply did not consider such a possibility. In conclusion, the study has reiterated the historic lessons that a safe and expensive airway should not be utilised uneconomically by circulating too litt le air through it."

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). U-Pb dating by ion microprobe on magmatic zircons from the vicinity of the Goonumbla and Gidginbung deposits gives ages of 438 ¦ 3.5 Ma (2 6), and 435 ¦ 2.5 Ma (2 (7) respectimly, W a minimum age of 435 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of magmatic phases from volcanic rocks adjacent to the Browns Creek skarn deposit. Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.
