Yuanjing processing plant is a scheelite and wolframite plant in southern China. Water shortages and recent environmental regulations mean that the plant must reuse the wastewater that comes from the mining operation. This paper describes the efforts to reuse the mining and ore washing wastewater (MOW) in the processing plant. Initial attempts to reuse the MOW in the strong magnetic separation were unsuccessful because the magnetic media pack was seriously fouled by the micro-fine precipitate generated. The focus changed to reuse the MOW in the scheelite flotation circuit, which includes one roughing, one cleaning and three scavenging steps. Laboratory batch tests showed this would likely be successful because using MOW reliably improved the flotation performance in the laboratory tests. Then a 20 day industrial trial was run in the plant. The trial was very successful with the enrichment ratio of WO3 increasing from 17.4 to 23.6, while the recovery remained around 79.2 per cent. The industrial trial was so successful the company immediately adopted the new scheme, which has remained in use ever since. This technical solution not only alleviated serious water shortages, and satisfied environmental regulations but also improved the plant performance.

Gold at the Harbour Lights Mine (HLM), WA occurs principally in pyrite (Py) and arsenopyrite (AsPy) minerals rendering it inaccessible to direct cyanidation. Froth flotation produces a concentrate with low mass recovery and with high recoveries of sulfides. After investigating several alternatives, a novel flotation process has been developed to separate the concentrate into pyrite and arsenopyrite rich fractions. The pyrite fraction is finely ground and cyanide leached, while the arsenopyrite is treated off-site. This paper describes the separation process from laboratory bench scale through to commercial operation at the HLM gold plant.

There are four main types of base metal and gold mineralisation recognised in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. These are stratiform, polymetallic veins, stockwork/concordant gold-quartz veins and unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation. The stratigraphy of the central Palaeoproterozoic Pine Creek Geosyncline has been simplified into three groups comprising the Batchelor, Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups in ascending order. Stratiform mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek Group. The earliest mineralisation is found adjacent to circular faults ringing basement highs. Higher in the stratigraphy, stratiform mineralisation is often associated with zones of high compression in the vicinity of basement highs. A synsedimentary-diagenetic origin for stratiform mineralisation is proposed. Polymetallic vein mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. Its composition changes systematically through the stratigraphy similar to the stratiform mineralisation. The mineralisation is structurally controlled and usually occurs in the vicinity of basement highs. Stockwork-concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is hosted by the upper Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. It occurs within compressional zones and along the Pine Creek Structure corridor around, above and particularly between basement highs. Mineable reserves occur in thick continuous semi concordant quartz-sulphide veins and/or stockworks. Unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation shows a close spatial relationship with the Palaeoproterozoic/Mesoproterozoic unconformity. The mineralisation is localised by structures formed during Mesoproterozoic deposition and is commonly adjacent to Archaean basement or its remobilised equivalents. The type of mineralisation (stratifom/polymetallic vein) is a reflection of local stress regimes, structure and physio-chemical conditions. An initial phase of stratiform mineralisation is postulated to have occurred with the first significant marine transgression in a tensional regime. A second phase occurred later during a compressive regime. "Ihermochemical sulphate reduction of mineralising fluids by hydrocarbons is invoked as the precipitation mechanism for the polymetallic vein type of mineralisation. Hydrocarbon generation is postulated to have occurred within the Frances Creek Group, in many places contemporaneously with the movement of mineralising fluids and basin compression. Polymetallic veins formed from the interaction of mineralising fluids and hydrocarbons which were trapped in suitable structures. An abundant, continuing supply of hydrocarbons was necessary to form significant deposits. Where these conditions were not net, the mineralising fluids largely continued their ascent to the near surface environment to form stratiform deposits. The stockwork/concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is a later event and occurred during the relaxation of compressional defonnation after deposition of the 1-inniss River Group.

In April 2003 plant upgrades in the æLow GradeÆ Cadia Hill circuit were undertaken in order to improve concentrate quality and metal recoveries from the flotation circuit. The major changes involved: circuit reconfiguration to allow all concentrates to be reground to less than 38 ¦m prior to final cleaning; increasing ball charge in the regrind mill to fully utilise all of the installed power; desliming of the cleaner scavenger concentrate to improve the circuit water balance; and the inclusion of a gravity concentrator in the regrind circuit to recover more free gold to bullion.Once the flotation circuit had stabilised under the new operating conditions concentrate launder modifications and increased froth crowding on the scavenger flotation cells permitted the introduction of stronger collectors without compromising concentrate quality or circuit stability.Twelve months on, the copper concentrate grade has increased by two per cent and metal recoveries increased by three per cent and seven per cent for copper and gold respectively. The project capital outlay of approximately $2.0 million has been repaid in less than three months. This paper will review the project from the design, construction and commissioning perspective as well as the subsequent debottlenecking exercise that was required to eventually yield the full benefits of this upgrade.

The Mt Keith Mining Alliance operates a fleet of large capacity hydraulic face shovels and more than 40 X 240 t capacity haul trucks to deliver annual production in excess of 40 Mbcm per annum. The Mt Keith Nickel mine is currently operating at a depth to 300 m below surface with a planned final depth of the order of 500 m. As is the case with any large open pit managing the health of the workforce on continuous shift operations is of critical importance to achieving outstanding safety and production outcomes. Fatigue management at Mt Keith is effectively managed by the personnel operating the mining equipment, with assistance and understanding of the management team and supervisors. The program has been driven through the introduction of Fatigue Champions and a comprehensive management plan that includes education, individual health plans and the use of new technologies. Mt Keith has been instrumental in trialling new technology which assists in monitoring fatigue in operations personnel. Insight into these developments is provided in the context of the overall fatigue management plan. The field trials of the OptAlert(TM) system and how it assists in measuring fatigue is explained. The implications for individual operators and the context for a fleet wide approach to fatigue management is also discussed. Mt Keith has recently completed the second phase of trials with the result that this new and exciting technology is being considered for adoption globally across BHP BillitonÆs open pit mining operations.

Management requires up-to-date information on the activities of an enterprise in order to maintain control and to assist in decision-making and planning. In today's environment it is essential that this information is immediately available and in an easily assimilated format. If this is not the case, management is forced to make decisions based on intuition and past experience. At Mt Newman Mining Co, a computer application has been developed and implemented with the objective of providing this type of information to management. The Key Parameter Reporting System (as the application is known) allows for daily (constant) on-line capture of selected production statistics, safety statistics and free format textual comments relating to topics such as industrial relations, major maintenance and other pertinent news. Information can be retrieved,'and displayed or printed in either a tabular or graphical format. All senior managers have colour visual display units in their offices for immediate access to the system. Access to selected sensitive information is controlled. All company staff are able to retrieve unsecured information from the system via visual display units installed in all company Locations.

The Newmont Waihi Operations are centred on the Martha mine at Waihi, New Zealand. The mine has produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold from both openpit and underground sources since operations began in 1878. The current open pit operations commenced in 1988 and in the year to 30 June 2002 produced 129,790 ounces of gold at a cash cost of USD122 per ounce. This paper provides an overview of current operations and future directions.

In Colombia, northeast of Antioquia, there is a gold deposit that has produced continuously since the middle of the XIX century, located within mining title RPP-140, property of Gran Colombia Gold Segovia (GCGS) since 2010. Mining materials are taken to the “María Dama” Processing Plant where 1500 tonnes of materials are processed daily. Before 2010, the previous owner of the mining title processed about 600 tpd and directly discharged almost all tailings, given that they had no capacity to put them into final deposits. El Chocho was conceived as a final tailings deposit to store the pulp produced by the processing plant; it was divided into two phases with two dams (upper dam and lower dam) given that the presence of illegal miners at the lower phase impeded a single dam design. A squatter impeded construction of the upper dam; so afterwards, starting at the higher end was necessary (owned by GCGS), building dam 1B to store tailings in pulp; after the squatter returned the lands to the owner (GCGS), construction of tailings dam 1A was required and thus complete construction of dam 1C or the upper dam. While all of this was happening, GCGS decided to acquire a 1500 tpd filter press which currently dehydrates tailings in order to take them to the valley controlled by dam 1A. Construction of dam 1A was designed following the containment wall model, made with geotextile tubes. These improvements generated reduced pressure on renewable natural resources because water is recirculated and less fresh water contributions are required; less pressure is placed on soil, flora and fauna because the area intervened for tailings storage will have a higher storage capacity and, as such, a longer useful life.

New structural studies in the Walker Fault Zone of eastern Arnhem Land are integrated with basin-wide reconnaissance observations, made to refine models for the structural evolution of the McArthur Basin and provide new insights into the nature of metal logenetical ly important pre-inversion phases of the basin's evolution. At least five principal events may be identified during the Proterozoic: The Tawallah Group and equivalents were deposited throughout the McArthur Basin during an extensional event. Rifting of an incipient Batten Trough occurred at this time, in a terrain characterised by orthogonal, linked extensional faults. Uplift and erosion of the Tawallah Group accompanied continuing extension and was penecontemporaneous with continuing deposition of the overlying Parsons Range Group, within a precursor to the Walker Trough. Dt (of the Walker Fault Zone) relates to a new rifting event, penecontemporaneous with deposition of the McArthur Group and its equivalents in the Walker and Batten Troughs. This rifting accompanied dextral strike-slip faulting along northerly-trending bounding faults, as a result of northwesterly-directed oblique extension, leading to pull-apart basins. D2 inversion of the Batten and Walker Fault Zones pre-dates deposition of the Roper Group. In the proposed model WNW-ESE directed shortening (D2.), accompanied by folding and thrusting, and by local development of cleavage in the Walker Fault Zone, is seen to be followed by northerly-trending sinistral faulting (D2b), about a SE to ESE-directed compression. D3 is basin-wide and post-dates the Roper Group. It is characterised by conjugate faulting and folding about ENE to NE-directed compression. The latest Proterozoic event to be identified (D4) comprises widespread north-trending strike-slip dextral faulting of Roper Group, coupled with N-S directed thrusting across the Urapunga Fault Zone and Murphy Inlier This is accompanied by late dextral reactivation of NNW to NNE-trending faults in the Walker and Batten Fault Zones.

Trojan Nickel Mine is the largest producer of Ni, Cu and Co in Zimbabwe. The mine has operated a nickel flotation concentrator and base metal refinery continuously since 1969, creating 28 million tonnes of sulfide bearing tailings, five million tonnes of permanent waste rock and about seven million tonnes of smelter slag. Exposure of the sulfide bearing minerals renders them susceptible to oxidation in the presence of water and oxygen, resulting in acidic solutions with elevated concentrations of total dissolved solids, sulfate, metals and residual flotation chemicals in various waters draining from the mine site. These pollutants pose a direct threat to the environment and human health, and understanding their deportment and behaviour in the various waste streams is essential in the mineÆs environmental objectives to prevent or minimise adverse impacts arising from its operations. A geochemical assessment of the pollutants was carried out to compute a mass balance between the major sources of pollution and the distribution and fate of pollutants in waste streams from the mine site. Waste rock, tailings, surface water, ground water and sediments were sampled, tested and analysed. Mineral composition and water chemistry data show that geochemical reactions are responsible for the release of pollutants from waste rock, tailings and plant spills. Drainage from the mine area is near neutral due to buffering by magnesium carbonates in the fine fraction of the tailings. The natural wetlands that exist downstream of the waste rock and tailings dams are effective in reducing metal loadings to water courses. However, solutes and heavy metals are occasionally released to surface and ground water, when their concentrations peak during the dry season. The results demonstrate the necessity to understand the natural chemical processes that characterise the distribution of pollutants in nature and how such knowledge can be used to develop cost effective methods to remediate pollution in the natural environment.

Situated in north-west Queensland, Australia, the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) has been producing copper and gold since 1996. Owned and operated by Glencore Xstrata, ore is currently sourced from a newly developed underground sublevel cave (SLC) mine below the old EHM open pit (the pit). Ore feed to the concentrator is supplemented by satellite open pits comprising the Mount Margaret operation.The transition from open pit to a producing underground mine involved a complex extraction sequence for the first two production sublevels on RL1650 and RL1625. Underground mining during cave initiation was further complicated when south wall instability prevented completion of the final open pit shell. The transition mining phase included mass firing of an inclined crown pillar between the initial SLC void and the pit followed by a combination of transverse and longitudinal SLC mining.The inclined crown pillar mass firing was the first significant milestone in the extraction of the transition ore block. Comprising approximately 890 000 t of in situ material; 70 000 m of drilling was charged with 351 t of emulsion and 6026 electronic detonators to initiate the single mass firing. The firing contained five direction changes over 19 seconds making it one of the largest and most complex underground blasts ever conducted in Australia.Risk management was integrated into every facet of the technical and operational planning and execution of the transition mining phase, whilst maintaining daily mine construction and production commitments. hortly after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, the words ‘social distancing’ entered the global lexicon. The effects on the public of social distancing, lockdowns and travel bans are well documented. They also present unique challenges to the mining industry. For Hexagon’s Mining division, this posed a significant challenge. We have built our business – our reputation – on regional, customer-focused service and support. True to Hexagon’s values of being professional, engaged and customer-focused, we innovated to overcome the distance dilemma. Making automation a reality for our customers by implementing and supporting technology projects from a distance has helped deepen partnerships by making it easier to tap into our global experts’ knowledge. For example: • Body cameras were at the heart of a successful safety installation at a mine in Ghana. Despite the pandemic lockdown preventing travel by our South Africa staff into Ghana, the project was completed with minimal delays. • Traditionally, implementation and training for our Blast Movement Technology solution is done physically at the mine site. With COVID-19 travel restrictions in place, we have developed and successfully employed a remote deployment methodology. • Using RealWearTM headsets in the field and utilising the knowledge management platform from HINDSITE, Hexagon workshop technicians have been able to support hardware repairs in local offices, which once would have been undertaken in our overseas offices. • The same headset is being utilised to provide clients with remote mentoring sessions by our skilled team members who are based in our regional locations and unable to travel to their site without extensive quarantine commitments. • In instances where our team members have had to travel to site, we have provided consumer technology such as VR headsets to help them cope with long periods of quarantine to and from site. Post-pandemic, Hexagon will continue to refine and improve this method of working. When executing a ventilation change the mine ventilation circuit is in a state of flux throughout the entire change period with discrete mine areas both under ventilated and/or over ventilated during the change process. Whilst routine risk reduction strategies such as removing electrical power and people from the mine are commonly deployed it is wise to complete the change in the shortest practical time frame. This not only minimises the chance of unacceptable concentrations of contaminants accumulating around the mine but reduces the impedance on production activities which are routinely suspended during these change periods. This paper firstly highlights the importance of the maintenance of an accurate ventilation model and discusses issues which should be considered to assist to maintain in it a suitable state of health. Further it provides some tips on how to monitor that your model is in an acceptable state of tune so that it can be confidently deployed in the change process. Finally, it details the sequential process how a finely tuned and accurate ventilation model can be utilised to carry out major ventilation changes according to appliance pressure adjustments only and without the need to constantly measure and check resultant branch flows throughout the whole change process. Also discussed are some simple practical tips which will help ensure that the ventilation change process will go according to the devised plan on the day and in the most appropriate order including checking the efficiency and accuracy of the change, after it is completed.

This paper presents an overview of a program PC-BC developed for application to the design and evaluation of block cave operations. Conventional mine planning software tools are not well suited to the evaluation of this type of deposit. The paper looks at the modelling approach as applied to a block cave mining project. The following steps are described:Initial preparation of data including block models, draw point footprint geometry and draw cone geometry. Computation of individual draw point reserves. Procedure for modelling of vertical mixing of material within each draw point and subsequent determination of the best height of draw for each draw point based upon an economic cut-off value. Smoothing of draw heights amongst neighbouring draw points to produce a realistic draw envelope. Mineable reserves within the envelope are then computed. Tools for preparation and evaluation of various production schedules. This includes definition of draw rates, and rates for commissioning new draw points. In an operating mine, the capture and analysis of daily draw tonnages is important. How PC-BC accommodates this is described as well as the processes for depleting the draw column reserves. In the 12 years since the program was first developed, it has been used on a number of projects for feasibility studies and operating mines. Some practical examples of the use of the program in these projects are presented. Finally, some commentary on the sensitivity of various parameters is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the overall footprint design.

The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.

Base metal ores contain low levels of toxic/hazardous elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, cadmium, lead and mercury. Given the large tonnage of base metal ores mined and processed each year globally, the accumulated mass of minor elements introduced into the biosphere is large and could be expected to have a significant environmental impact. Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a methodology that has been developed to assess the environmental impacts of material supply chains over their entire life cycle. Assessing the toxicity impacts of metallic wastes and incorporating these impacts into LCA methodology is not a simple task given the complexity of the issue. However, research and methodology development is in progress internationally to address this. Despite limitations concerning the lack of a coherent framework for characterising the toxicity impacts of metals, including issues such as bioavailability, a study was carried out to give first estimates of the relative toxicity impacts of various waste streams from metal production processes. The wastes considered were: red mud; sulfide tailings (copper, nickel, lead/zinc); lead/zinc slags; synthetic rutile residue; iron oxide residue; and copper slags and anode slimes. These toxicity estimates can be considered the æworst caseÆ scenario for these wastes, where all the metals present are bioavailable. Combining estimates of the amounts of the various waste streams produced in Australia each year with the toxicity results showed that despite their relatively low human toxicity impact per unit mass compared to some other waste streams, red mud and the various sulphide tailings had the highest annual human toxicity load on the environment, along with copper smelting slag and dust. Data from the pH dependent leaching test reported in the literature were assumed to represent first approximations of metal bioavailability and used to compare the two approaches to estimating the toxicity impacts of red mud.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

The knowledge in the field has been reviewed by literature studies, and using experience from personal research in sublevel caving. There is a lot of material regarding gravity flow of fine grained materials in bins, but the theory of flow for these materials are normally not applicable for coarse blasted rock. This study was therefore concentrated towards coarse rock fragments created after blasting in orebodies. The goal for this study was to make a report of known knowledge, and identify what we have to learn more about. The Bergmark-Roos theory, which was a paradigm shift in the science of gravity flow, is today the best mathematical theory for calculation of the drawbody for a homogenous material or when we wish to simulate the mean drawbody for a large number of draws. The Bergmark-Roos theory must however be improved, so it can take into account the flow pipe effect. When this is done it will be possible to construct a 3D computer model for calculation of ore extraction versus amount of loaded ore and waste. It is also necessary to find the 3D shape of the flow cone to be able to calculate the 3D ore rest that normally develops on footwalls. Calculations should be done for the draw on several sublevels including determination of the ore losses and temporary ore rests. First when this computer model is developed optimisation of ore recovery and waste rock dilution can start for a given orebody. The author points out the importance for international co-operation and standardisation of methods for determination of material properties. More field tests and model blasting tests should also be done. When enough knowledge is gathered, a handbook of the optimisation of sublevel and block caving should be written.

The rediscovery and recognition of the magnetite potential of the iron mineralisation at the Hawsons Project area 60 km south of Broken Hill has the potential for the development of a new series of magnetite iron-ore operations across the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia. Despite the low-grade of 16 per cent magnetite, the Hawsons project feasibility studies are indicating a positive business case for a large-scale 20 Mt/a of magnetite project for the following reasons:• The mineralisation is on a huge scale, with a major potential for increases beyond the already very large established resource of 1.4 Bt.• The mineralisation is particularly soft for crushing and grinding, with a Bond work index of 6.3 and an overall comminution power requirement of 6.7 kWh/t of ore. This equates to 39 kWh/t of concentrate which is significantly less than for similar projects.• The mineralisation fractures easily, preferentially along grain boundaries.• Location is close to mining infrastructure and a skilled workforce at Broken Hill, 60 km to the northeast.• It is close to road and rail infrastructure for access to the resource.• A high-grade, clean magnetic concentrate can be produced, with the only contaminant being silica.The deposit is a sedimentary siltstone which is considerably different to other known magnetite deposits. This caused significant differences in Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) results between laboratories so that the softness of the ore has required a close focus on, and changes to the laboratory procedures. A DTR procedure has been developed to provide consistent results across the deposit.Crushing and grinding test work has established a clear advantage in the use of the high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing and grinding circuit for this particular ore. The power required for comminution using the HPGR crushing circuit is about half the power required for the Autogenous milling circuit.Therefore, despite the low magnetite grades, the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia has the potential be a new magnetite iron ore province.
