Tin-polymetallic vein type deposits are one of the major source of metal producers in the Circum Pacific Belt. This type of deposit is of great importance for the modem electronics and medical industries because of their high content of rare metals (especially indium and bismuth). We have studied two representatives, Tosham of India (Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W-Ag-Au), and Mount Pleasant of Canada (Zn-Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W), using proton and electron microprobes in order to delineate the distribution of medicallhigh-tech rare metals. The electron microprobe study showed that major indium carrier in such type of deposit are roquesite (CulnS2), sphalerite, stannite and a Cu-Zn-Fe-In-Sn-S mineral; and that indium is incorporated in sulfides by coupled substitution like Cu + In = 2(Zn + Fe). The proton microprobe showed that indium at trace levels is also present in chalcopyrite and pyrite. In addition, zinc, copper, arsenic, antimony, selenium, tin, and bismuth are common in chalcopyrite and pyrite. Arsenopyrite contains nickel, copper, zinc, silver, tin, antimony and bismuth. In chalcopyrite and pyrite, zinc, arsenic, indium, bismuth and lead are higher in Mount Pleasant ore, but silver is higher at Tosham. Also thallium and gold were found only in Tosham pyrite. The Tosham deposit is genetically related to S-type magma, while the Mount Pleasant deposit is related to A-type granite. Tosham ore contains zinc-bearing biotites that coexist with chalcopyrite in ore bodies but Mount Pleasant ore lacks such biotite. We propose that the difference in elemental abundance between the two deposits are caused by the different character of source magma and different mineral associations of the ore body.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

The transition to more sustainable metal production is receiving much attention at present, and the iron and steel industry is at the centre of the conversation. New, more environmentally friendly production technologies, such as direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnaces, need to be developed in a short period of time. This necessitates increased use of computational modelling that incorporates more accurate material descriptions. The combination of large-scale multiphysics models of high-temperature processes with CALPHAD material descriptions leads to infeasible computation times. This can be resolved with the previously reported RapidThermo framework, which has been demonstrated to make equilibrium calculations orders of magnitude faster, within controllable limits of accuracy. In this paper, we explain how further material properties, which are important to modelling hightemperature reactors, can be added to the RapidThermo framework. This can improve the accuracy and usefulness of process and multiphysics models in the development of new technologies, which can significantly accelerate development cycles.

Atlas Copco, a leading supplier of equipment and services to the mining and construction industries, is consistently pursuing its strategy to offer the most productive and economical solutions by continuously offering new innovative products. These are, in most cases, developed and tested in close cooperation with demanding end users before being officially launched on the international market. The demands for higher productivity and improved overall economy have resulted in systems for automation of the drilling cycle and also tools for integrating the drilling equipment to the production control system used by the customer. In terms of improving the blasted material quality, the company has placed emphasis on accuracy in the drilling process and documenting what has been drilled. By applying state of the art technology to the common automation platform, developed for the surface drilling market, major steps in improving overall drilling productivity and blasting performance have been achieved. Since sintered ore is the primary source for producing molten iron in the blast furnace process, maintaining stable quality despite the utilisation of low-grade iron ore is crucial. However, conventional analysis methods, such as chemical composition, ore size distribution and types of iron ore, have limitations in developing the utilisation of new low-grade iron ore and predicting sintered ore properties. Sintered ores are formed through a complex melting process of granule particles consisting of iron ore, flux and fuel. Consequently, it has been investigated that analysis methods which apply the reactive properties of iron ore to predict sintered ore characteristics. In this study, we estimated the properties of iron ore by simulating the assimilation process of coarse ore, which influences the bonding strength of sintered ores and quantifying the degree of assimilation reaction. Pseudo particles were formed by granulating coarse ore (1–3 mm) with adhering fines, which act as primary melts and sintered at 1623 K. The bonding strength of individual sintered ores, formed from 11 different types of iron ore, was measured using a simplified Tumbler Index (TI) test and each value was indexed as the Iron ore Reactivity Index (IRI). By investigating the relationship between the degree of assimilation depending on iron ore properties and the characteristics of sintered ore, we demonstrated that sintered ores formed from more reactive iron ore exhibited stronger bonding strength. Moreover, when blending conditions resulted in a higher Iron Blending ore Reactivity Index (IBRI), the physical properties of sintered ore improved. The development of this analysis method is expected to not only enable careful consideration of iron ore usability but also allow for the advance prediction of sintered ore qualities by deriving the IBRI.

Ok Tedi is in a period of transition. By 2008 mill feed will consist of higher levels of high-grade but metallurgically challenging skarn ores. Additionally, the Taranaki pit will start production in 2008 along with the start-up of a new pyrite concentrator. Taranaki ores are very high in sulfur. Sulfur is captured in a pyrite concentrate prior to tailing entering the Ok Tedi River. These and other complex scheduling issues will need to be resolved over a critical three-year period. With these requirements in mind, Ok Tedi contracted AMC Consultants to develop a custom version of the Life of Business Optimisation System (LOBOS¬) to assist medium-term production scheduling at Ok Tedi. LOBOS utilities enable Ok Tedi planning engineers to:import polygon-based reserve data (Blast Masters) from MineSightÆs Interactive Planning Tools (IP Tools); graphically construct block sequencing and material flow constraints; edit constraints defining standard scheduling, processing and financial relationships; define dump and stockpile attributes; and assign capacities to production systems, plants, dumps and stockpiles. LOBOS converts Ok TediÆs production scenario into a mixed integer program (MIP) and submits the resulting model to IlogÆs Cplex MIP Solver. The Solver seeks an optimal production schedule that maximises net revenue per mill hour while meeting all constraints. This paper introduces Ok Tedi and its production requirements and relates these requirements to the facilities developed for an Ok Tedi version of LOBOS.

The total cost of horizontal development can be minimised by optimising the cost of each of the component operations (eg drilling, blasting, etc). Component costs should not be minimised. To optimise blasting results (ie the mean advance per round, muckpile characteristics and overbreak), operators need to optimise the blast design and drilling and blasting procedures. The costs of pulling extremely long (say >6 m) rounds, producing unnecessarily fine fragmentation, and minimising overbreak are excessively high. Operators should continually consider how they can shorten the cycle period by saving time at the face. To enable it to be matched to the pertinent rock properties, the blast design needs to be based on as much relevant experience as possible. To develop the most valid correlation between blasting results and blast design, the latter must be implemented carefully and accurately, but without sacrificing speed excessively. The total cost can often be reduced by using: 1. computer-controlled jumbos (to reduce the period and cost of drilling and to increase drilling accuracy); 2. larger diameter (51 mm to 64 mm) and longer (4.5 m to 6 m) blastholes; 3. at least three large diameter ( ¦89 mm) relief holes that are 0.2 m to 0.3 m longer than the blastholes; 4. explosive products that are selected on the basis of proven reliability and overall cost efficiency rather than price; and5. stemming (to increase the amount of effective work done by each kilogram of explosive and, hence, to reduce the powder factor and possibly the number of blastholes and the costs of drilling and initiation). Non-perimeter blastholes should be charged with ANFO or a bulk emulsion of established performance. Upper perimeter blastholes should be charged with a bulk explosive with a much lower effective density. But where geology varies considerably, greatest control over overbreak could possibly be achieved with the versatile pre-assembled charge shown in Figure 1. This paper presents numerous potential ways in which the total cost of development can be minimised. It concentrates on recommending blast design features and the safe, rapid, cost-effective implementation of designs.

"Problematic issues in materials handling applications are often amplified in the iron ore industry due to the relatively high density of the ore as well as the abrasive nature of the product. One of the main issues arising from the handling of iron ore is excessive wear, with two applications typically suffering accelerated wear issues being transfer chutes and conveyor belts. These wear issues are problematic due to additional capital costs, but mainly due to the associated downtimes resulting in the accelerated wear. In order to improve the cutting blasting effect of dimension stone mining, the water coupling directional cutting blasting technology was put forward. Based on the test apparatus and special charge configuration, the mechanism of directional cutting blasting was analysed. Directional device changes the initial equilibrium of the total energy of shock wave effect on blasthole wall. The initial directional crack first appears in the blasthole wall that makes contact with the directional device. Then, two cracks are connected along the direction of the blasthole centre line under the action of detonation pressure and water wedge. The plexiglass tests showed that water coupling directional cutting blasting technology produced cracks along with the predetermined direction completely. The completion of the $1.1 B Cape Lambert Upgrade project is the second ‘pillar’ in Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s expansion program that has enabled Rio Tinto Iron Ore to effectively double iron ore shipping capacity from the Pilbara between 2003 and 2009 to 220 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a), following the successful completion of the Dampier Port upgrade project two years earlier.The Cape Lambert Upgrade has built on and enhanced many of the engineering achievements of the Dampier Port upgrade project, as well as developing innovative and unique engineering solutions for this complex ‘brownfields’ project that presented its own challenges, particularly in this distinctive open-water port environment.The project was implemented in two phases to achieve an increase in port shipping capacity from 55 to 80 Mt/a – an enhancement phase and an expansion phase.The initial enhancement phase, which provided an increase to shipping capacity from 55 to 60 Mt/a, focused on increasing the utilisation and effi ciency of existing plant and equipment with a relatively small capital expenditure.The expansion phase, which provided the increase in shipping capacity to 80 Mt/a, included extending the existing iron ore wharf by 256 m to create four shipping berths, a new shiploader, an expanded stockyard (including a new fourth bucket wheel reclaimer) and a new surge bin facility to maximise outloading tonnage rates.The Cape Lambert Upgrade project was implemented whilst the port remained fully operational and continued to ship record tonnages of iron ore throughout the project duration. This achievement required signifi cant upfront planning and sequencing of construction activities to support the operation of the port. Innovative design and construction techniques were used to mitigate the impact and enable construction activities in and around the operating plant.Throughout the project, new benchmarks in engineering design and construction practices were established, which have since been adopted for new iron ore port facilities currently in planning phases.

The ironmaking industry consumes a large amount of fossil fuel derived carbon as heat source, reducing agent of iron ores and carburising agent of reduced iron. Although the demand for drastic decrease of carbon dioxide emission, carbon is an essential element for smelting process of molten iron. The carbon recycling ironmaking process by circulating CO has been already proposed to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the production of molten hot metal is not considered in this process because sufficient amount of carbon does not dissolve in reduced iron by CO. Therefore, our group has suggested a new carbon recycling ironmaking process which can produce hot metal. In this process, free carbon and iron carbides produced by carbon deposition reaction using metallic iron as a catalyst are used. It is known that only Fe3C is obtained as iron carbide by using CO gas, however, Fe5C2 is also produced by adding H2 gas. The composite agglomerated with these carbonaceous materials and fine iron ore (Deposited Carbon-Iron oxide Composite: DCIC) is reduced and melted in a furnace. It is reported that Fe3C in DCIC accelerates the reduction reaction and melting of the composite. In this study, the effects of iron carbides and free carbon on the melting behaviour of DCIC are investigated. Fe3C, Fe5C2 and free carbon were produced by vapour deposition using porous iron whiskers and CO-CO2-H2 gas. These were agglomerated with hematite reagent at a certain ratio to prepare DCIC samples with and without Fe5C2. The samples were heated up to 1300°C in inert atmosphere. The DCIC containing Fe5C2 completely melted and iron nuggets were obtained after the experiment. This behaviour was not observed in the composite without Fe5C2. This indicates that using Fe5C2 is more preferable than Fe3C for molten iron production using DCIC.

Many young mining engineers do not consider consulting as a possible job, believing that many years of working on-site is required to achieve practical experience, develop expertise and acquire industry contacts. However, mining consultancies employ engineers with varying levels of experience, including part-time university students, graduates and engineers who are relatively new to the industry. This paper outlines the role of a young engineer in a large mining consultancy and the benefits to both the consultancy and the client of having a mix of consultants with a diverse range of experience. From the authorÆs perspective, the work experience, lifestyle and rewards of mine consulting are compared to site based work, including a discussion on whether consulting is able to offer the professional development that a young engineer needs.

Recent studies carried out to support the development of a strategy for the New Zealand mineral industry by the NZ Minerals Industry Association have included investigations of mineral potential, and the development of scenarios for realising this countryÆs mineral potential by 2010. New economic research is applying a general equilibrium model to quantify the opportunity cost of this potential. The model analyses separately four categories of land (private land and three categories of Crown land) and identifies four distinct mineral classes û precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and aggregate. It investigates the economic effect of the increased availability of mineral resources on the mining industry itself, on other industry sectors and on the NZ economy generally, including its impact on unemployment, GDP and household welfare.The analyses suggest that increases in the level of GDP of between 1.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent may be obtained by utilising New ZealandÆs mineral wealth to varying degrees. The mineral industry sectors are significant beneficiaries under all scenarios; mineral output increases by between two and five times its current level. However, the flow-on effects to the rest of the economy, and to households, are also significant. The analyses show that household income, adjusted for changes in consumer prices, can be expected to increase by between 1.6 per cent and 2.7 per cent. This results largely from increased employment.

It has been observed in several Jameson cell installations where the source for flotation feed is deslime screens, that the recovery of coal particles greater than 0.5 m is not as great as that of finer material. Consequently, a research project was undertaken at a CHPP in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, to assess the possibility of increasing the recovery of coarser particles (+0.5 mm) within the downcomer of the Jameson Cell. The effect of decreasing turbulence and agitation in a commercial-scale downcomer was investigated to assess the effect on the recovery of both coarse and fine coal particles. This paper details the findings of the testwork, summarising the results relating to differences in the operating parameters within the downcomer.

The æMountain Camp reefÆ at Alford's mine, Wakamarina,Marlborough, had no recorded gold production although assays of 5 - 26 g/t were reported, but it did produce c. l000 kg of scheelite. The lode consists of a lower massive quartz layer, and upper, cm-banded, ribboned quartz layers, and has a very low sulphide content. Within the massive layer, relict early fine-grained mosaic quartz with idioblastic scheelite is surrounded by recrystallised granoblastic coarse-grained quartz with calcite and plagioclase, in which an original ribbon banding texture is mimiced by strings of tiny inclusions. In both the banded and massive layers, rounded quartz grains, created by cataclastic milling of grain margins and along syn-vein fractures, have been partially annealed within later quartz overgrowths. Late fibrous quartz and calcite fill brittle cross fractures.   Deformation events D1 and D2 are associated with mid-late Jurassic metamorphism of the Pelorus Group, D2 producing the main regional schistosity (S2, and the earliest scheelite. D3 is an extensional mylonitic shear event that formed the dominant schistosity in Alford's mine (S3). The quartz lode was emplaced within the mylonite by a series of individual dilation pulses (D4). The D5 event caused crenulation of the S3 mylonite, kink banding and chevron folding of the S2 schist and S3 mylonite, and reverse faulting, rodding and cross-fracturing with late fibrous quartz-calcite veining of the D4 quartz lode.   Fluid influxes during successive dilations of D4 fractures progressively caused recrystallisation of earlier quartz bands on the footwall, annealing and recrystallisation of quartz along milled crystal margins and fractures, and deposition of minor sulphides. There was thus a dynamic interplay between fault dilation, lode fracture, fluid influx, lode band deposition, and lode recrystallisation. Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks. This paper describes the technical development of the Newman beneficiation plant over its 23 years of operation and how this development relates to the mine ore reserves of high-grade and low-grade ore. It also discusses the importance of the beneficiation product grades in the overall blending of shippable products from a range of mines to optimise overall ore resource utilisation. Also discussed is the importance of the ore reserve reconciliations in resource utilisation. Data is provided on the capacity and quality improvement results of the plant upgrade, carried out in 1999. This shows how the original capacity upgrade targets have been exceeded and the additional quality benefits that have been obtained from this capacity.

"Mining geology as a defined profession is only about 100 years old. The successful modern mine geologist needs to be a multidisciplinarian, but also needs to maintain a focus on the key outputs of the role. The technical skills needed in the role have increased as mining methods move to increasingly mechanised techniques. As well as being the guardian of the orebody and ensuring minimal dilution to expected ore grades, the mine geologist should be competent in the 12-point mine geology process. Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.
