When studying minerals degrees at university, all the emphasis is towards sending the graduates into the bush to work at a remote mine; however, that is not the only option available to new graduates. There are positions in equipment supply companies, commercial laboratories, research organisations, engineering companies and contractors of many types. The aim of this paper is to show metallurgy graduates that there are non-mine site based career options available to them that offer outstanding career development. This is illustrated by outlining the research being undertaken by Magotteaux Australia and by telling the story of a graduate metallurgist working in MagotteauxÆs small research group. Magotteaux is an international supplier of grinding media and wear resistant components for the mining industry. The Australian research group is focused on determining the effects that the choice of grinding media has on subsequent processing, for example flotation and leaching, by using newly developed tools and techniques.

"One of the major environmental impacts of mining is the destruction of habitat. The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an iconic Australian marsupial that has been severely affected by land clearing and its decline is continuing. This has placed pressure upon mining companies and government agencies to ensure koalas are managed throughout the life-of-mines - from land clearing through to rehabilitation of post-mining landscapes. This paper reports on the æKoala VentureÆ research partnership between The University of Queensland and Rio Tinto. As part of the Koala Venture program we examined koala use of two types of restored environments: rehabilitated mined land (20 sites) natural regrowth forests (six sites), at Blair Athol Coal Mine in Central Queensland, Australia. Searches for koala scats revealed evidence of koalas in ten per cent of rehabilitated sites (2/20) and 33 per cent of natural regrowth sites (2/6). Two factors were identified as being of greatest importance in facilitating koala recolonisation of restored habitats. Firstly, all recolonised sites were located close to native forest occupied by koalas (mean 135 m ¦ 52). Proximity to source animals is considered crucial to recolonisation of suitably restored habitats. Secondly, three of the four recolonised sites were dominated by koala food trees, most of which were large enough to be utilised by koalas. Availability of suitably abundant food resources is, therefore, also considered crucial. The requirement for these two factors, in combination, is highlighted by the absence of koalas at several sites that contained abundant food trees, but that were distal to areas with source animals, and vice-versa.Our research demonstrates the enormous potential for restoration of wildlife habitat on post-mining lands, even for species with specific requirements such as the koala. Physically-based landform evolution models (LEM) provide a spatial framework to forecast the long-term geomorphic stability of post-mining landscapes. When used to test the relative stability of different landform designs, LEMs may assist with the development of optimal closure designs for rehabilitated mines. However, in order to reduce prediction error, factors controlling landscape evolution must also be accurately represented by models. This requires that the correct sets of processes are represented and that driving parameters used in LEMs are, if necessary, calibrated to the landscape of interest.Vegetation exerts strong controls on the hydrologic and geomorphic processes that drive landscape evolution. Hence, the spatial and temporal scales over which typical patterns in vegetation are represented in different landscapes are important considerations in LEM calibration. However, vegetation is rarely accounted for in LEMs and even when integrated is often represented simply, without representing spatial dynamics of vegetation cover that may impact landform development.This study focuses on characterising vegetation patterns to calibrate a new vegetation module of the The Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR)-Lisflood LEM to be applied to a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger uranium mine located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) of northern Australia. In the ARR the spatial dynamics of vegetation over time are largely driven by monsoonal rains and topography. Extensive dry season fires are also common in the region, temporarily reducing vegetation cover where they occur. Hence, hydrology, topography and fire disturbance interact to shape a distinct, yet dynamic, mosaic of different vegetation types of varying cover density. Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

A new engine family has been developed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. for application in off-highway trucks. This family, the 3500 Series is available in three configurations, covering a 600-1200 kilowatt range. This engine series incorporates the latest in design technology, stringent functional specifications for servicing ease, fuel economy, reliability, optimum performance and parts interchangeability. Linear kriging methods fail to estimate local grades and local reserves for highly skewed variables due to three reasons: it uses only part of the available data information, it has no physical principles associated with the mathematical proceedings to minimise the problems, and it works with continuous variables while data are discrete because of the limited precision of any equipment. The techniques commonly used up to now to solve the highly skewed variables estimation problems were unsuccessful, unless mathematical rigor is abandoned. Even the method of multiple indicator kriging is not satisfactory. This paper presents a new framework, the field parametric geostatistics (FPG) that transforms noisy variograms into well-behaved variograms and justifies mathematically empirical procedures commonly used, as trimming or capping arbitrarily very high values. The method, when applied to non-skewed variables, yields similar results to classic kriging. The methodology is illustrated in a case study at a gold deposit in Brazil, and compared to results obtained by usual techniques.

Owing to their complexity, many metallurgical processes are difficult to model fundamentally, and as a result more attention has been focused on the use of artificial intelligence techniques to simulate these processes. In this paper recent advances in the use of neural nets to model processes not amenable to conventional methods are discussed. These include the application of a new modelling methodology based on the use of neural nets for the dynamic simulation of metallurgical processes, the use of conventional techniques in conjunction with neural nets to simulate gravity separation circuits, as well as the detection of gross errors in variable measurements by means of a neural net representation of the relation between measurement and constraint residuals.

This study assessed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composites with different height ratios. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted using an acoustic emission monitoring system and XTDIC three-dimensional full-field strain measurement system. The results showed that with the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the uniaxial compressive strength of composite samples increased from 5.26 MPa to 14.61 MPa. The evolution of the deformation localisation zone of the composite samples is closely related to the initiation and propagation of the primary cracks in the coal samples. At the moment when the main fracture of the coal samples occurs, there is a large drop after the peak of the stress-strain curve of the composite samples, and the height of the rock samples increased to varying degrees, which indicated that the failure of the coal samples induced the rebound deformation of the rock samples. With the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the rebound deformation amount of the rock samples decreased from 0.042 mm to 0.008 mm, and the rebound deformation rate decreased from 0.210 per cent to 0.010 per cent. Meanwhile, the rock samples’ rebound deformation releases part of the elastic energy to act on the coal sample, further contributing to the destruction of the coal samples. Compared with single composite coal samples, the coal samples of the composite samples have much more failures. In addition, with the increase in rock-coal height ratio, the input energy density, elastic energy density, post-peak release energy density, and residual elastic energy density of the composite samples increased, the dissipation energy density decreased, and the percentage of pre-peak elastic energy density increased from 98.56 per cent to 99.86 per cent. These results revealed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composite with different height ratios and provided a theoretical reference for understanding the underground dynamic rock failures.

Destress blasting techniques have been widely employed in underground mines for the purpose of preconditioning highly stressed rock mass. Appropriate applications of the technique successfully contribute to increasing mine safety (eg mitigating the risks for rock bursts). This paper presents a simulation technique to estimate the extent of damage zones induced by destress blasting. A 3D numerical model with a single blasthole is constructed with FLAC3D code, whereby static analysis is carried out in which horizontal and vertical stresses are applied to the model in order to simulate stress conditions in a deep underground mine. Afterwards, dynamic analysis is performed whilst applying time-varying blast pressure along the blasthole. The blast pressure profile takes into consideration an instantaneous increase and gradual decrease in blast pressure as well as the propagation of detonation along the blasthole. In this paper, constitutive models allowing for shear and tensile strengths of rock mass that are dependent upon strain rate are newly implemented into FLAC3D code with C++ programming language, whereby blast-induced damage is assessed by the extent of tensile and shear failure zones. The results obtained from the dynamic analysis show significant decrease in the extent of yielding zones induced by destress blasting with increasing the magnitude of in situ stress. They indicate that considering in situ stress state is indispensable in order to propose proper blast design for each level in underground mines. Based on these results, the relationship between the extent of the damage zone and depth at which destress blasting is performed is established. Furthermore, stress dissipation induced by destress blasting is examined with static analyses, in which the modulus of elasticity is decreased according to a rock fragmentation factor, a, only for the area where tensile and shear failures takes place during the dynamic analyses. A model parametrical study with respect to a is undertaken. The relationship between the rock fragmentation factor and the stress dissipation in the yielding zones is developed from the parametrical study. The rocks of New Zealand can be grouped into three main elements: the Early to Mid Paleozoic Western Province, Late Paleozoic to Early Cretaceous Eastern Province, and several overlying Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins. The Western and Eastern provinces were formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland, whereas the Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins developed after the separation of New Zealand from Gondwanaland in the Late Cretaceous.   The Early to Mid Paleozoic Western Province rocks are exposed in Nelson, Westland and Fiordland and include metamorphosed sandstone, mudstone, limestone, and volcanic rocks, intruded by granite batholiths and maficultramafic igneous complexes. The main associated mineral deposits are gold-quartz lodes hosted by Paleozoic greywacke and argillite. Other type of deposits present include: volcanogenic massive sulphide lead-zinc; vein and greisen tungsten and tin; and magmatic nickel-copper sulphide, platinum group element, and magnetiteilmenite deposits. Granite stocks and batholiths, intruded during the Cretaceous, have associated porphyry molybdenum deposits.   The Late Paleozoic to Early Cretaceous Eastern Province includes the greywacke rocks forming the axial ranges of the North and South islands, and a belt of schists in Marlborough, the Southern Alps and Otago. The schists host many shear-zone related, gold-quartz lodes and, in the Southern Alps, lenses of serpentinite with talcmagnesite and nephrite jade. Volcanogenic massive sulphide copper deposits and volcanogenic manganesechert deposits, occur in both the schist and greywacke, and a belt of Permian age ultramafic rocks (Dun Mountain Ophiolite) has associated copper, chromite and chrysotile asbestos deposits.   The Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic rocks are found in a number of sedimentary basins onshore and offshore of the North and South Islands. Many of these basins developed during the rifting of New Zealand from Gondwanaland in the Late Cretaceous. They contain New Zealand's economic petroleum, coal and limestone deposits. Uplift and erosion of the mountain ranges shed gold into rich placer deposits in the South Island.   From the Miocene, volcanic rocks feature prominently on the eastern South Island (e.g. Banks Peninsula southeast of Christchurch and the Otago Peninsula northeast of Dunedin) and northern North Island (Northland and Hauraki), and volcanism continues today in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The North Island volcanic rocks have associated epithermal mineralisation, mainly gold and silver, but also copper, lead, zinc, mercury, and antimony, as well as deposits of sulphur, perlite, pumice and zeolite. Porphyry copper style mineralisation is associated with subvolcanic intrusive rocks. Erosion of the volcanic rocks has shed titanomagnetite onto the west coast of the North Island forming significant coastal placer deposits. Similarly, erosion of the Alpine schists in the South Island has resulted in placer ilmenite deposits on the coast of Westland.

The demands of the economy require larger manufacturing facilities using greater quantit- ies of raw materials which must be mined, handl- ed, stockpiled and recovered with efficiency and dependability. All over the world, mining com- panies, steel manufacturers, power stations and process plants are not only seeking but finding methods of increasing outputs and'reducing costs in the field of materials handling. In mining bigger continuous mining machines and shovels, larger trucks and crushers are digging and processing greater quantities of differing materials which have to be handled and shipped at rates once thought to be impossible. To implement such schemes demands the blending of a lot of diverse-equipment, mining machinery, bins, feeders, reclaimers and it is here that the belt conveyor assumes a role of ever increas- ing importance. Significant developments have taken place in the seventies with respect to conveyor belt transportation; not only in the systems but also in the components which combine to make such systems work efficiently.

Commencing in 1956, Rio TInto Australian Exploration Pty Limited in association with Electrolytic Zinc Co of Australasia, Limited, has been carrying out a mineral prospecting program in North-West Tasmania over an area of about 4000 square miles.The program has comprised extensive airborne geophysical surveys, detailed geological mapping, ground geophysical and geochemical investigations. Out of the wealth of new data, and the examination of previous records, has emerged a new structural concept of regional ore control and distribution in North-West Tasmania. This roncept stems from the discovery of an ancient 'fossil' rift valley (graben), named the Owen Rift Valley, along which are located the major mines of the area and numerous well-known prospects. The known mines and prospects from north to south include Mt Bischoff (tin); the Pinnacles (zinc, lead, ropper); the Chester (pyrites); Rosebery-Hercules (lead, zinc, ropper, silver, gold); Mt Tyndall (lead, ropper, zinc); Comstock and Tasman (copper, lead, zinc); Mt Lyell (copper, pyrites, gold); Mt Jukes and Mt Darwin (ropper). The identification of the West Coast (Owen Conglomerate) Range as a fossil rift valley is due to Or B Campana, who carried out extensive geological mapping and interpretation work, and who, with S B Dickinson, are the senior authors of this paper.S B Dickinson, who introduced B Campana to the geological problems of West Tasmania, had previously investigated the Mt Lyell and Rosebery mining fIeld, to which reference is made in this work.D King assisted in the regional mapping and in providing numerous data on the mineral distribution of the area.R S Matheson rontributed to the fmdings on ore emplacement and rontrol in the discussions held on this subject. The pellet qualities primarily depend upon the thermal profile and gaseous environment during induration. During the induration of the pellet, it undergoes physical as well as chemical changes. Physical changes are mostly due to sintering and chemical changes are due to carbon burning inside the pellet. The effect of carbon on sintering is investigated on a single pellet scale using an optical dilatometer. Sintering is a complex process that involves transportation through various mechanisms. Sintering is quantified in terms of sintering ratio and the kinetic parameter, exponent ‘n’, under isothermal conditions is deduced using the power law equation. The value of n can be used to estimate the sintering mechanism at different isothermal temperatures. Also, the activation energy is calculated using the empirical Arrhenius equation. The activation energy of 0 per cent coke and 1 per cent coke-containing pellets are 531.0 kJ/mole and 552.6 kJ/mole respectively. The order of magnitude of activation energy suggests the same mechanism in both cases. Although the mechanism of sintering is the same, 1 per cent coke-containing pellet sinters more at any isothermal temperature.

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: 1. a minimum filling rate of 250 ma/h, 2. a curing time of 28 days, and 3. minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

The Macraes gold deposit is located in a low angle NE dipping (~15¦) shear zone, the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) cutting greenschist facies metasediments of the Otago Schist. The shear zone is host to large volumes of mineralised schist and relatively sparse quartz veins. Early in the development of this through going shear the schist experienced an episode of hydro fracturing and fluid redistribution. As a result, presently exposed schists within the Intrashear sequence are pervaded by localised swarms of quartz filled pure extension and extensional shear fractures hosting goldscheelite mineralization. The swarms comprise networks or æstockworksÆ of veins that strike NE, are subvertical and form subperpendicular to the shear zone fabric. Vein frequency across strike is typically ~1 m-1, with most veins five to ten centimetres thick and vertically continuous for up to ~20 m. Many of the veins show delicately banded internal textures that are parallel to the vein margins. These bands/lamina indicate incremental growth and are defined by a variation in grain size or alternatively by thin slivers of wallrock schist, though typically uncommon. The majority of veins are overprinted by a weak plastic deformation, although primary structures are largely preserved. This deformation has produced subgrain structures, migration of grain boundaries with sutured margins and undulose extinction of grains. These microstructural observations possibly indicate that temperatures were around 300¦C during stockwork vein formation. In general, the mode of brittle failure that developed the stockwork veins can be directly related to lithological variation. The geometry of stockwork veins indicate that local vertical shortening and extension occurred in the Intrashear sequence of the HMSZ synkinematically with thrusting. Localised extension was mainly parallel to the structural trend; that is, it took place perpendicular to the direction of inferred thrusting. The development of lateral ramps most likely gave rise to extension in parts of the shear zone during continuous shortening to form swarms of stockwork veins.

Most of South AfricaÆs high-grade iron ore resources are hosted within a fault-controlled structural basin in rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Iron mineralisation occurs as individual orebodies in fault-bounded basins or as fold-controlled concordant lenses around an unconformity plane above the Kuruman Banded Iron Formation. The Sishen mine near Kathu and the beeshoek mine and Sishen South deposit near Postmasburg lie on the northern and southern border of a major domal structure known as the Maremane dome, respectively. The effects and structural constraints of at least three orogenic compressive episodes and several intermittent extensional episodes on the formation, erosion and preservation of iron mineralisation on the Maremane dome and surrounding environs were investigated. Ventersdorp impactogenal rift basin development at ~2.78 - 2.64 Ga, finalised with the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary Vryburg Formation during the thermal subsidence stage at ~2.64 - 2.6 Ga, and was followed by tectonic quiescence/stability and an extensive marine transgression across the entire Kaapvaal craton. The drowning event led to the formation of a carbonate platform with the deposition of the Schmidtsdrif and Campbellrand subgroups conformably above the Vryburg Formation at ~2.6 - 2.52 Ga. The initiation of distal (to the west of the Kaapvaal craton) off-craton oceanic rifting, causing submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity, led to the deposition of initially manganiferous chert (Wolhaarkop Formation) followed by banded ironstone formations (Manganore Iron/Kuruman Formation) of the Asbestos Hill Subgroup at ~2.52 - 2.46 Ga. Initial passive margin rifting along the N-S oriented western edge of the Kaapvaal craton, initiated at the end of Ghaap Group time (during Koegas Subgroup deposition) at ~2.46 - 2.35 Ga, formed a prominent system of N-S striking, westerly dipping normal faults. Easterly directed crustal compression in post-Ghaap Group time in response to the Kalahari Orogeny (accretion of Rehoboth craton along western edge (Kalahari suture zone) of the Kaapvaal craton at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ma led to the formation of large-scale regional, N-trending F1-folds. Partial to complete inversion of the Koegas passive margin rift system (ie reverse dip-slip reactivation of the N-S striking normal fault system to high-angle reverse faults and dextral strike-slip reactivation of the Ventersdorp rift system developed in the Archaean basement), was followed by uplift, erosion and formation of a regional angular unconformity (Postmasburg unconformity). Uplift was accompanied by deposition of fluvio-glacial sediments of the Makganyene Formation (Lower Postmasburg Group) within an intracratonic peripheral foreland basin setting unconformable above Ghaap Group strata at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ga. Post-orogenic crustal relaxation and rifting caused extensional reactivation of the N-trending Palaeoproterozoic passive margin rift system and NE-trending Neoarchaean Ventersdorp impactogenal rift system, forming a fault-controlled depository for the volcano-sedimentary Upper Postmasburg Group at ~2.24 - 2.1 Ga. Deceleration in rifting was succeeded by thermal subsidence of the Upper Postmasburg Group rift, erosion, formation of a regional angular unconformity and deposition of clastic sediments of the Lower Olifantshoek Supergroup unconformable above Postmasburg Group strata at ~2.1 - 1.93 Ga. Renewed rifting led to the deposition of volcano-sedimentary units of the Upper Olifantshoek Supergroup within a rift system superimposed on the Postmasburg Group rift depository at ~1.93 - 1.83 Ga. Easterly directed crustal compression during the Kheis Orogeny at ~1.83 - 1.73 Ga led to renewed inversion of rift structures of the Postmasburg Group and Olifantshoek Supergroup depository, N-trending F2 folding and thin-skinned thrusting of older rock units eastwards over the cratonic cover, thereby utilising planes of weakness in the strata such as prominent unconformities and lithological contrast boundaries as principal dTcollements. NNW-directed crustal compression in response to Lomanian (Namaqua-Natal) Orogeny at ~1.15 - 1.0 G along the southern margin of the Kaapvaal craton, resulted in minor sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the N-S striking fault system, the formation of extensional NNW-SSE striking fracture/fault zones and the development of ENE-trending F3 folds forming a F2/F3 fold interference pattern. Post-Lomanian tectonic events (eg the Pan-African Orogeny at ~650 - 500 Ma, the Cape Orogeny at ~310 - 240 Ma, and the Gondwana breakup at 205 - 120 Ma), caused only comparatively minor extensional reactivation of the pre-existing fault systems. Iron mineralisation was ultimately preserved from erosion by Kheis Orogeny-related N-trending F2 synclines and Lomanian Orogeny-related ENE-trending F3 synclines, in particular areas of interference between F2 and F3 synclines representing comparatively deep semi-circular trough- like depressions, as well as in half grabens formed adjacent to reactivated westerly dipping N-S normal faults. Support for relating the iron and manganese mineralisation to structurally controlled hydrothermal fluid flow during the Kheis orogenic event has also been found, and ongoing research is aimed at confirming and refining the hydrothermal model for iron ore mineralisation in the Northern Cape.

Improved roof control in high deformation tailgate environments has been achieved over the last decade through development of stiffer and increased capacity standing support products. æThe CanÆ is one such development, being a steel cylinder containing a weak cementitious fill, designed to essentially fold in upon itself whilst maintaining strength. A laboratory study to better define the relative load contributions of the steel cylinder and fill, the confining interaction between these components and most importantly, the potential impact of varying the steel and/or fill properties is described. This would enable the support engineer to ædial-upÆ the desired strength and stiffness properties and optimise the standing support design with respect to load capacity, stiffness, weight (handling) and cost. Design curves to optimise strength based on steel casing thickness, fill strength (confined and unconfined) and æCanÆ geometry were established. Scaled-down (one-third) samples were used in the test program and found to adequately reflect the loading behaviour of full-scale versions, thereby providing significantly greater scope for further product development at less expense compared with testing full-scale products.

A study was undertaken to quantify the differences in performance between a full-length encapsulated cable bolt and a partially encapsulated cable bolt. Much research has been reported on the differences in cable bolt design and operational parameters such as borehole diameter and grout type with much of this based on the Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT). However, there is a gap in knowledge surrounding the effect of anchorage length on load transfer and cable bolt performance particularly with respect to the role of the bulb in modified cable bolt designs. The objective of this study was to expand the existing knowledge base of cable bolt performance with the intent of developing a revised design criterion. Alongside a comprehensive review of current cable support theory, design and practice, a series of pull tests was undertaken to compare each anchorage method using a high capacity modified cable bolt. The results serve to confirm earlier work on fully encapsulated anchorage. Both the peak load capacity and stiffness of the fully encapsulated cable bolt were nearly double that of the partially anchored cable bolt. When the tests were repeated in an oversized borehole, while there tended to be more variation in performance, there was little significant difference in the mean results. In addition to anchorage length, there are other factors that contribute to cable bolt performance including in order of sensitivity: embedment length, water-to-cement ratio of the grout, type of grout and borehole diameter. Sampling of grain for mycotoxins is challenging in that some mycotoxins, such as Ochratoxin A (OTA), have very low permitted levels and the kernels carrying the mycotoxin may be highly localised within the bulk of the grain as ‘hot spots’. Sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be fraught with similar problems, especially if the contamination is adventitious and random. Incremental sampling under these circumstances can be shown to lead to a high variance in the sampling result.A new design of sampler for grain and other free-flowing particulates has been developed that is effective in practically eliminating the sampling variance due to distributional heterogeneity (DH).This paper introduces the design and argues that the sampler should be free of sampling variance due to DH.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017.
