A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. Completeness of extraction of a mineral from ore depends on many reasons. First of all it is a function of quality of disintegration of ore. It is supposed that two basic factors: character of structure and texture of the ore aggregate and a disintegration technique influence the quality of the mineral aggregate destruction, æopeningÆ of its internal boundaries. In this paper, the problem of technological mineralogy from the point of view of genesis of the mineral aggregate, its typomorphical features and methods of their quantitative description are discussed. The purpose of this research is to provide information for technologists. It should enable the development of a rational flexible scheme of disintegration of ore with full extraction of a useful component, without its losses and without unnecessary expenses of energy. For achievement of this purpose the mineralogical information should have ½number and a measure+. By the authors, the technique of the quantitative analysis of fabric of the mineral aggregate based on several models û thermodynamic, crystallographic and geometrical is offered and discussed. The leading role in the quantitative analysis of a fabric of ore belongs to internal bounders. But internal bounders of the mineral aggregate by bounders or faces of the mineral individuals or mineral grains are formed. Their geometry, orientation concerning own (mineral grain) crystallographic lattices, orientation and distribution in space of the ore aggregate are proportional to the energy accumulated at origin and the further growth. These characteristics of mineral individuals are consequences of conditions of their formation. That is why the named triad of models is used. From crystallography it is known that faces of different stability and mobility form borders of crystals. They also contain different quantity of energy. Mineral grains also are faceted by different energy borders. They form intergrowths with each other according to a principle of balance or unbalance. That is why in addition to traditional parameters of the description of a fabric of the mineral aggregate (mode and grainmetrical composition) it is necessary to add new. For example, length and the square of intergrowthing bounders of mineral individuals differentiated (in couples), crystallographic symbols of borders, their roughness and so forth. Consequently, solving a problem of the geometrical characteristic of borders, we define also its power characteristic. In this paper experience of application of our technology in studying ores of one of deposits of Urals Mountains is presented. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices, which are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode, are possessed. Structure and texture of rock or ore aggregate reflect its formation and transformation conditions. It is important to understand that disintegration energy cannot be more than aggregation energy, the energy of intergrowths formation. The square and orientation of mineral individuals borders vary at pressures or stresses of mineral aggregate evolution. These phenomena often cause selective increase in the square of borders at constant average grain size, ie the granulation. Granulation presents the increase in quantity of mineral individuals while their modal share remains constant. At the same time their average mineral grains size. Some mineral individuals increase in size at increased pressure. When lithostatic or lateral pressure drops the majority of mineral grains increases in volume at the cost of intersticial or film solutions or fine grains. These are only special examples of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate. They illustrate our statement that all changes in fabric of the mineral aggregate are a reaction on varying external (ie geological) conditions. It is possible to consider that structurisation of totality of mineral individuals as a whole is a process of adaptation of the mineral aggregate, which forms and exists in varying force and energy fields. Differential and integrated geometry of total internal boundaries of the mineral aggregate serves as adaptation mechanism of the mineral grains system. Boundaries form intergrowths of the mineral aggregate. Thus, it is possible to consider that the most informative parameters of the stereometric analysis for restoration of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate are the following. First of all, it is a quantitative estimation of the volumetric shape of the ore mineral in crystallographic coordinates, a total area of borders of all mineral grains in the aggregate, the specific square of their boundaries, the specific square of intergrowth boundaries of the ore mineral separately with grains of each minerals of the matrix of the mineral aggregate as well as traditional grainsmetric and modal composition. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices that are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode are possessed.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. The uncertainties of the grinding performances are then calculated and their impact on the results interpretation is then analysed.CITATION:Brochot, S, 2012. The Gramalote orebody is a large low-grade gold deposit situated in the San Roque municipality, 124 km north-east of Medellin in Antioquia, Colombia. It is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and B2Gold and is currently in Feasibility Study phase. In 2013 AGA requested CRCORE to undertake a preliminary study of the potential application at Gramalote of pre-concentration by screening, part of the Grade Engineering suite. 160 samples of coarse assay rejects (-3 mm) were tested and showed one of the strongest responses seen worldwide to that time, suggesting that about 70% of the gold could be recovered into 40% of the mass. This was seen as potentially markedly improving the Gramalote economics. A large-scale testing program was implemented on site to follow up these results. A total of 18 samples of 17 t each were mined along a pre-existing exploration adit. A complex test flowsheet allowed size fractions to be generated from the as-received material as well as after crushing to 53, 23 and 3 mm, all from the same head sample. The procedures were designed after carrying out a heterogeneity study to measure sampling errors. The coarser size fractions were designed to study the effect of crushing on upgrade response and predict the response on open-pit run-of-mine ore. The finer size fractions were designed to investigate means of predicting the upgrade response across the orebody. The large-scale testing closely confirmed the average upgrade response as predicted from drill core assay rejects but found that only the -53 mm crushed material accurately predicted the upgrade response of individual samples. Ore geochemistry was able to usefully distinguish samples with good and poor response. A small study on drill core suggested that, for Gramalote, fine crushed material distinguishes vein associated and disseminated values but not other factors that control actual outcomes.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control. The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexability to handle future variations in operating conditions. This paper describes the mining setting for the sub-level open stoping (SLOS) mining method used at Olympic Dam (OD), and investigates the range of stope performance conditions encountered over 30 years of production, using a qualitative description of the factors influencing performance. Utilising a continuous improvement tool, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) process, and a forward-looking rock mechanics program, the intent is to identify the key factors driving productivity and performance to create a stable and achievable long term mine plan.

Spiral concentrators are one of the flowing film gravity concentration devices used to beneficiate coal and mineral ores. The aim of the current study is to understand the particulate flow and separation performance of an LD9 spiral concentrator using a multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model utilises the Algebraic slip mixture model to simulate particulate flows. The model employs the Renormalisation group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence models to resolve the fluid turbulence. Initially, the volume of fluid method was adopted to track the water-air interface. Simulations were then carried out at low (0.3 and 3 wt.%) and moderate (15 wt.%) solids concentrations. Multiple particle-phase representing particles of poly sizes (75–1400 µm) and multi-densities (1450–2650 kg/m3 ) were simulated to study the particle segregation on the spiral trough surface. The numerical predictions are compared with the literature performance data at a diluted pulp flow rate of 6 m3 /hr. The results were found in close agreement. Further, the same CFD model is used to study the change in pulp velocity, streamflow rates, and separation performance at increasing solids concentration. For the same density particles, Fine particles mostly show higher volume concentration in the middle and outer trough regions, whereas coarse particles show higher volume concentration in the interior and central trough regions. It implies that the fine particles mostly segregate towards the outer region, and dense particles segregate towards the axial column.

This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Exploration for uranium in Australia has so far discovered reserves equal to 17.5% of the Western World's. The Australian uranium industry, when fully developed, will be one of the largest producers and possibly the largest exporter in the world. The world's nuclear industry is young, rapidly developing in size and technology and is subject to more social, political and regulatory controls than any other industry. This paper considers the probable development of Australia's uranium industry against a background of normal commercial parameters together with other factors which are peculiar to the nuclear industry. As the theme of this conference is "Australia's role in the World Mineral Indus- try" this paper concentrates on the commercial and practical aspects associated with the development of Australia's uranium resources in a world context.

This paper discusses the implementation of a mixed integer linear programming model for a coal preparation plant. The plant considered consists of primary and secondary heavy media cyclones, hydrocyclones for intermediate fines and froth flotation for the very fine material. The model is designed to optimise the plant settings and product flows to maximise revenues for a given specification for two product outputs. The model can deal with bonus/penalty aspects of the product pricing for products that exceed or fail to meet specification. We report on a model with two separate coal feeds with parallel circuits for the oversize, intermediate and fines streams. The genesis of this model is more than 30 years old but recent improvements in mixed integer programming solvers make a full mixed integer formulation practical. The original model began as an enumeration of cut points with arbitrary rules for product allocation. The product allocation was improved in a linear programming formulation by Gunn (1982) and Sarker (1991 and 1995). Current mixed integer programming capabilities make it possible to replace the enumeration aspects and solve directly as a mixed integer programming problem. Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.

Minerals processing operations use a significant quantity of fossil carbon to provide energy and as reductant. Greenhouse gas emissions from the use of this fossil carbon contribute to the global increase in anthropogenic CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. In the spirit of fostering thinking about a step change in this situation, this paper explores opportunities for the use of sustainable carbon from biomass sources in a range of mineral processing operations. The exploration shows that many common processes are contenders for fossil carbon replacement and that feasible scientific research by minerals processing technologists would add to deeper understanding of the potential for a sustainable bio-carbon based industry. It is also shown that there are many dilemmas on the social, environmental and economic fronts to be solved before a biomass based industry could become a reality.

Early attempts at estimation of stress wave damage in blasting by use of finite element analysis met with limited success due to numerical instabilities that prevented calculations from being carried to late times. An improved damage model based on microcrack growth in tension allows finite element calculations which remain stable at late times. Estimation of crater profiles for blasting experiments in granite demonstrate successful simulations with this model.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.

Following the United Nations initiative to fingerprint the origin of conflict materials, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has decided to fund a pilot study on coltan ores. Since 2006, our working group has been investigating columbite- tantalite (coltan) mineralisation, especially in Africa, also within the wider framework of establishing certified trade chains. More than 300 samples were obtained from the worldÆs major coltan producing areas. Special attention is, however, directed to samples and concentrates from Ta-Nb-Sn provinces in Africa: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Namibia. Using state of the art analytical tools, we investigate mineralogical and chemical parameters obtained from columbite-tantalite ores and concentrates in order to distinguish between ore provinces, likely even down to the deposit scale. Methods employed include fully automated electron microscopy (mineral liberation analysis), electron microprobe analysis (major and minor elements), laser ablation plasma-source mass spectrometry (trace elements and U-Pb dating), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (bulk major and trace elements), X-ray diffraction analysis (mineralogy and structure) and thermal-ionisation mass-spectrometry (U-Pb dating). Major and trace element concentration patterns, mineral assemblages in the ore concentrates, and zoning characteristics in the different pegmatites from Africa distinctly differ from each other. Furthermore, the following age populations are evident:Archaean (>2.6 Ga);Palaeoproterozoic (1.9 - 2.1 Ga);early Neoproterozoic (æKibaranÆ; 0.98 - 0.93 Ga); andlate Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic (ca 0.5 Ga). Currently, we focus on the resolution of the fingerprinting system from region via ore province down to deposit scale. Our preliminary analytical results indicate that a certification scheme including fingerprinting of sources of coltan ores is feasible.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. The Fitzpatrick Orebody is a three and a half million tonne fault bounded portion of the early-middle Proterozoic Broken Hill Orebody.The Fitzpatrick Orebody was discovered in 1975 by diamond drilling from the 36 Level Exploratory Drive. This followed persistent geologically oriented exploration and a courageous decision by mine management to deepen No. 3 Shaft to provide exploratory development across the Globe Vauxhall Shear and allow effective drilling of the target area.The stratiforrn oebody consists of three lenses, the lead rich No. 2 and 3 Lenses and smaller zinc lode. They represent a down plunge extension and boudinaged, fault-bounded portion of the main Broken Hill ore lenses. The surrounding host rocks are extensively faulted and jointed due to complex history of movement on the bounding shears. This results in extremely poor ground conditions during mining. The ore was delineated for mining development using three dimensional fan drilling from exploratory and hanging wall drive drill sites.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia, about 50 km north of the town of Southern Cross. Ore is trucked from three geographically isolated sources to the crusher at Koolyanobbing, where it is blended before and during crushing. Lump and fines products are produced and railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR is examining alternative processing paths, from mining to ship loading, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing costs. Modifications to the system must be consistent with potential future expansions and maintain the low inter-shipment grade variability on which CNR prides itself and has built a strong relationship with its customers. In searching for the optimum process design, many options from mine face to ship loading must be evaluated and compared. Pilot plant studies are infeasible, while complex mineralogical interactions, competing goals and numerous possible system configurations limit the applicability of theoretical analysis. It was therefore concluded that simulation modeling would provide the confidence to take the next step into production trials. This paper describes techniques applied at CNR to simulate grade variability resulting from potential process design changes. The simulation models are easily run Excel-based modules, with each module representing a different part of the process. The modules use extensive Visual Basic macros driven by Excel's user-friendly interfaces. Presentation of the results is enhanced by Excel's excellent graphical capabilities. The simulation software stores and graphically presents time-stamped data from a run, enabling detailed analysis of different process configurations. Final success of a simulation run is measured by inter-shipment variability (standard deviation and process capability) and in-process ore tonnages. Meaningful results from the simulations require the initial input data contain the same correlations present in the real production environment, between the mineral components, production linkages and across time. The data also have to allow simulation of potential changes to mining method and introduction of new pits into the blend. Mining data from the real operations under study are therefore used, with average grades and variability adjusted to match potential future development proposals. It is also necessary to filter out medium and long-term variations from the production data as this variability is best controlled through the conventional medium to long-term mine planning process, not by the process design being studied. The filtering was carried out using a Fourier transform technique, which is described.
