Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only. Al2O3 in natural iron ores generally occurs in goethite, kaolinite, gibbsite, hematite and iron carbonate. When the content of alumina in sinter increases from 1.11 per cent to 3.50 per cent, the reducibility of sinter decreases with the addition of four different types of alumina. When gibbsite and kaolinite are added, the low temperature reduction disintegration (RDI+3.15 mm) of sinter increases with the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Furthermore, when adding pure reagent alumina, the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.0 per cent will increase the RDI+3.15 mm of sinter. The addition of ferric oxide–alumina spinel with the Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent, also increases the RDI+ 3.15 mm of sinter. The influence difference is results from the change of the mineral composition and microstructure of sinter because of the occurrence state of Al2O3. Under the condition that Al2O3 content of sinter is 2 per cent, the porosity of sinter with kaolinite is 37.26 per cent, and the shape is irregular. When gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, the porosity of sinter is about 16 per cent, and the pores are round. When pure reagent alumina is added, the porosity of sinter is 17.49 per cent, and the pores are regular and small. When kaolinite, gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, platy calcium ferrite is mainly formed in the sinter, and some of it is columnar calcium ferrite. On the other hand, when pure reagent alumina is added, in addition to platy columnar calcium ferrite, acicular calcium ferrite is also formed in the sinter.

Alluvial mining even of shallow deposits is often economically a marginal proposition and causes significant disruption of the land surface through the need for large scale excavation. In-situ leaching using chlorine-based solutions eliminates the need for excavation, the disruption of surface activities, and may greatly reduce processing costs and improve recovery especially of fine gold. A spreadsheet model has been developed to design and analyse the economics of in-situ leaching of alluvial deposits. In-situ leaching of shallow deposits may be achieved in a number of ways including solution infiltration via perimeter ditches or the use of injection and production wells. In most instances deeper alluvials may only be processed using well systems. Two deposits are analysed in this paper. The first consists of one metre of payable wash beneath one metre of overburden. Some thirty fields per year are treated processing 450 000 BCM per year at a cut-off grade of around $4/tonne ($8/rn3 or the gold value equivalent of 0.26 gh or 0.52 g/m3). The principal costs are well drilling and labour. Sensitivity analysis indicates that doubling the throughput halves the cost. The economics of the project are relatively insensitive to reagent costs and consumptions, and halving the recovery doubles the cut-off grade. Shallow deposits treated using the infiltration ditch system may be marginally cheaper and more conveniently managed although this depends on the relative cost of digging the perimeter ditches. In a second example, deep leads with one metre of wash beneath 30 metres of overburden necessitate significant drilling and feature reduced throughputs as a consequence. In the example chosen 30 fields a year are processed for an annual throughput of 65 000 tonnes costed at around $20/tonne (1.4 g/t Au equivalent, $40 /m3). Sensitivity analysis indicates that throughput, and drilling cost per metre are not important but there is a high sensitivity to recovery and to the depth to payable wash.

This paper explores development of a novel ore characterisation method for the precise measurement of practical minimum comminution energy. A monolayer of particles with a narrow size distribution is broken using a precision rolls crusher (PRC); an ore characterisation device developed to overcome the shortcomings of conventional tests. For energy measurement, PRC uses two shaftmounted rotary torque transducers. These transducers acquire precise torque and angular speed data in response to the load applied to the rotating shafts during breakage events, which is converted into energy. The test progressively crushes feed particles down to final product size in many controlled breakage stages. The generation of fines in each breakage stage is then plotted as a function of input energy. The inverse of the gradient of this plot provides the size specific energy (SSE) in kWh/t of material generated below a predefined marker size; -75 μm in this case. The PRC has potential to evolve as a geometallurgical ore characterisation test—it is simple, fast, requires small sample mass (200–300 g), covers a wide feed particle size range (10 mm to 115 µm), and provides ideal SSE measurements that can be used for the calibration of on-site production equipment.

Field trials at three New South Wales and one Queensland coal mines were carried out to gather data on oxygen "run out" times of Self-Contained Self Rescuers (SCSRs), time taken to escape from the mine, distances travelled and the average heart rate of subjects wearing SCSRs. The study has led to a method of predicting the duration of oxygen supply from a SCSR as a function of the wearer's body weight, physical fitness and the prevailing environmental conditions. Escapeway design, planning for emergencies, familiarity with SCSRs and experiential escape training are critical to control panic and maximise the likelihood of survival of a person attempting to escape in an emergency involving fire or explosion.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham Operation) is located in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and is owned and operated by the Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM). Australian-headquartered copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in PBM; the Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Phu Kham Operation was commissioned in 2008 with an initial concentrator nameplate throughput of 12 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). Subsequent improvement projects, including the Phu Kham Upgrade Project (PKU), completed in 2012, and the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project (IRP), completed in 2013, increased the design throughput to 18 Mt/yr. In 2016, the actual mill throughput exceeded 19 Mt/a, this throughput is budgeted to be maintained until the end of 2020.The concentrator flotation circuit upgrade, completed during the IRP, called for a non-selective bulk sulphide concentrate to be generated from the rougher circuit. This in turn caused the mechanical flotation cells in the cleaner circuit, particularly those in the second cleaner bank, to become volumetrically overload. The overload reduced the cleaner circuit performance to approximately 92 per cent copper recovery at a 23 per cent copper concentrate grade, below the expected 95 per cent recovery. This bottleneck restricted copper units entering the plant to approximately 14.5 tonnes per hour (t/h) due to uncontrolled recirculating load build-up in the mechanical cleaning circuit.Maintaining the operating methodologies would have led to a copper production shortfall beyond 2016, to address this shortfall the Phu Kham Operation looked to optimise the Jameson Cell and mechanical cleaner circuit performance. The work included fundamental application of flotation practice and modelling, mineralogical analysis, bubble size analysis, plant surveys and test work. The results were used to develop and implement an innovative automated control system strategy incorporating flotation theory and operating strategies. The automation has the ability to quickly adapt to disturbances in the circuit and maintain optimised performance with little or no intervention by flotation operators.Upon completion, cleaner recovery increased to 95 per cent at a final concentrate grade of 23 per cent copper, and copper units entering the plant increased to 17.5 t/h.CITATION:Baas, D and Mikhael Gurieff, L, 2018. A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

Combining ultramafic mine tailings and acidic mine drainage via mineral carbonation to sequester carbon dioxide, presents an opportunity to minimise waste on mine sites. Low pH mine water with trace element concentrations can be effectively treated by high magnesium mine tailings, a useful source of finely ground reactive matrix. By using milled tailings for mineral carbonation, there are negligible energy requirements for communition of ore rocks to reduce particle size. This study aimed to assess the technical applicability of reacting ultramafic tailings and acidic mine water through mineral carbonation technology in the mining industry. Dissolution has been identified as the rate limiting stage in mineral carbonation; hence the study focused on identifying optimal dissolution conditions. Ultramafic tailings (particle size <100 µm) derived from serpentinite ore, were reacted with a typical mine water that was synthesised in the laboratory. Through variances in the solid to liquid ratios and temperature of dissolution, a maximum five per cent magnesium dissolution efficiency was reached at 50 g/L and 100°C. The acidic mine water was neutralised (from pH <2 to pH ~6) and iron, copper and zinc ion concentrations reduced significantly during the formation of solid precipitates. Carbonation was undertaken by injecting carbon dioxide into the magnesium-rich solution to form stable carbonates. The experimental work demonstrated proof of concept; however, dissolution efficiency and carbon dioxide sequestration was low, indicating that further research would be required before larger scale implementation.CITATION:Malli, H, Bouzalakos, S and Timms, W, 2015. The effect of using SO2 as an anodic depolariser in the electrowinning of copper from aqueous acid sulphate solutions has been studied using cells without/with a ceramic diaphragm. In all cases SO2-saturation of the electrolyte/anolyte decreased the anode potential by 68 to 75 per cent largely due to a change in the anode reaction from the oxidation of water to the oxidation of SO2 . However, poor quality deposits and low current efficiencies are encountered if SO2 is allowed free-access to the copper being deposited at the cathode. This situation is easily avoided by using a diaphragm to restrict SO2 to the anode compartment and for these conditions the resultant copper deposits are of a similar (high) quality to those obtained in the absence of SO2.

"The Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeM) comminution index (CI) was developed as part of the AMIRA P843 GeMIII project. Drill core geochemistry samples were passed through a Boyd Crusher with standardised settings and the resulting particle size distribution (PSD) was measured using sieves.Disadvantages of the original measurement were the relatively coarse crush size, requiring a second pass of crushing for geochemical sample preparation, and the limitation of throughput caused by the sieving step. At Antamina, the measurement has been modified to use a 2.2 mm crusher size setting, which permits a single pass. The PSD is measured using a Camsizer, an automated optical sizing instrument. The Camsizer sample is a +180 µm fraction, used to avoid passing too many fines through the instrument and slowing down the measurement. In the sieving step, the weights of the two fractions are recorded and subsequently used to normalise the distribution measured by the Camsizer. In this way, the throughput of the Camsizer can match that of the Boyd Crusher. The PSD data are therefore measured without penalising the throughput of the sample laboratory.The normalised PSD distributions are used to derive modified CI parameters, based on the slope and intercept of the breakage product size distribution, which are indirect measures of the material breakage hardness.Fifty samples were selected as a training set, each sample a composite of five or six individual assay intervals and each with its own measured CI. The average PSDs were calculated for the composites and used to calculate a composite CI. The intact half of the core, approximately 40 kg, was tested to measure the BWi, A*b and crushability. The results were used to develop predictive algorithms for these hardness parameters.A further 50 composites were chosen for lab testing, to serve as a blind test of the algorithms. The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

Since Jameson Cell flotation technology was first installed in a coal flotation application in 1988/89 at Newlands Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) there have been fundamental improvements to its design which has led to its current status as the leading technology in Australia for fine coal flotation. These improvements, which include key hardware modifications, consist of the re-development of the orifice plate to produce considerable increase in wear life and reduction in power consumption for a given air entrainment and a significant increase in the amount of air that is entrained. Modifications to the downcomer allow maximisation of residence time and air entrainment while changes to the feed and air distribution system allows a reduction in installation cost and a reduction of solids ingress into the air line. Additionally, operational improvements such as the use of recycle to maintain constant flow to the cell feed are discussed. The recent installation at Hail Creek in the Bowen Basin, which consists of three B6000/20 Jameson Cells (6 m diameter bottom-fed distributor with 20 downcomers) will be reviewed as a case study. The latest design and operability of the cells are summarised and compared against one of the original designs at Riverside CHPP also in the Bowen Basin.

The Jinfeng mine is Sino Gold's flagship project and is the second largest gold mine in China. Sino Gold Limited (SGL) holds 82 per cent equity in the Sino-Foreign joint venture Sino Guizhou Jinfeng Mining Limited (SGJML) with a Chinese partner. Jinfeng is located in a relatively remote site in southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is considered to be the largest known Carlin type deposit in China. Jinfeng Plant has the world's third largest BIOX« bacterial oxidation facilities (790 t/d), treating highly refractory concentrate generated from crushing, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling and bulk sulfide flotation operations. The Jinfeng Plant construction started in February 2005, commissioning was completed in April 2007, and commercial gold production was achieved in September 2007. This paper describes the successful operations of Jinfeng Plant over the last two years. The key events of the project development are described, from the project background and process design, through to the commissioning and achieving design mill throughput of 3600 t/d resulting 180 000 ounces of gold per year. Process aspects of the BIOX« and carbon-in-leach (CIL) operations over the last two years are discussed which illustrate a very high BIOX« oxidation rate (more that 97 per cent) and excellent CIL recovery (more than 96 per cent). The management of the Jinfeng plant CIL tailings detoxification and filtration is described, and Jinfeng has became the first BIOX« processing plant to have achieved dry stacking of detoxified and pressure filtered CIL tailings. Current efforts to recover cyanide from CIL detoxified solution and the achievement of a zero discharge site water balance are also introduced. Many improvement projects have been made over the last two years which have culminated in a 15 per cent increase in mill throughput over the design and BIOX« CIL recovery increasing from 92.5 per cent to 96 per cent. Significant operating cost reductions from lowered of acid, lime and cyanide usage through process modifications and technical innovations are discussed.

Community members’ sources of information about companies’ social investments are often influenced by the messages in a variety of communication channels, such as newspapers, television and social media. In this sea of communication channels, corporate communications may not always have the desired effect in influencing community perceptions. This paper explores the efficacy of communication between mining companies and communities in Chile through content analysis of corporate sustainability reports and newspaper reporting.Chilean media reporting between 2005 and 2013 is examined to identify community perceptions of corporate social investments made by mining companies. Content within the Chilean newspapers El Mercurio (national) and Soy Chile (regional) is contrasted with content from corporate sustainability reports published by The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) and Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada (Barrick) for the same period. The objective is to identify differences in the way that corporate social investments are reported by companies in sustainable development reporting and by media in newspapers.Overall, the study demonstrates that the media’s framing and reporting of corporate activities was more negative than positive. Moreover, media outlets tended to focus upon the ‘negative impacts’ or ‘damage’ to communities brought about by mining developments. Conversely, companies’ public communications were largely focused upon direct improvements in livelihoods (health, education, etc) of neighbouring communities. This preliminary study provides a baseline for the development of new formats of effective communication with neighbouring communities. The paper advocates for an increase in participatory mechanisms with affected parties, which could lead towards a greater mutual understanding of the impacts and draw parties closer together.CITATION:Tapia Rivera, R, Kirsch, P A and Clark, P, 2014. 1:100 000 geological mapping of Bougainville Island has resulted in refinement of stratigraphic subdivisions and relationships. We subdivide the sequence into basement Atamo Volcanics (Late Eocene-Early Oligocene), consisting of spilitised pillow basalts, which are overlain unconformably by Late Oligocene-Early Miocene Keriaka Limestone. The latter is unconformably overlain by fine-medium grained volcaniclastics and minor lavas of the Middle-Late Miocene Toniva Formation which coarsens upward and passes gradationally and conformably into the coarsely volcanolithic latest Miocene-Pliocene Arawa Conglomerate. The Kupei Complex, host to the Panguna.porphyry Cu-Au deposit, consists of medium - K20 microdiorites, granodiorites, and andesites intruding Arawa Conglomerate and Toniva Formation. K/Ar isotopic dates on the Kupei Complex range from 4.8-1.3 Ma, and hence overlap the age of the Arawa Conglomerate. We believe that the Arawa Conglomerate consists of mass flow deposits on a volcani- clastic apron surrounding a volcanic edifice above the intruding Kupei Complex.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. The Hunter Region, with a major part of the coal resources of New South Wales and a long history of coal mining, has experienced a rapid expansion of coal resource development in recent years. While there are inevitable conflicts between mining, urban development and related infrastructure, and between mining and other resources, the application of sound planning practices, and improved co-operation and co-ordination among the various parties, helps to reduce such conflicts. The planning process involves consideration of factors such as transport- ation (including port facilities), mine subsidence, provision for surface facilities, a,iC the need for buffer 'ones. In addition, provision must be made for urban expansion, often co-existing or in close proximity to present or future coal mining development. Approval of coal mining developments takes place within the legislative framework of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (EPA Act), the Coal Mining Act, 1973 (CM Act) and the Mining Act, 1973. Considerable effort has gone into stream- lining and co-ordinating the procedures under these Acts. The EPA Act provides for regional and local environmental plans, as well as a linked process of development control and environmental impact assessment. The CM Act provides for the grant of exploration and coal mining titles and mechanisms for the responsible management of Mining.

This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

The loss of 11 miners in the 7 August 1994 Moura No.2 Underground Mine Disaster was the catalyst for major change in the way safety was managed in the Australian Mining Industry. The impact was felt across all sectors not just underground coal. It was the catalyst for the overhaul of the regulatory frameworks, moving away from prescription to management systems and risk management. This had a substantial impact on the way not only the industry operated but also on how the regulator functioned. It heralded the introduction of competency-based training across all levels of the mining workforce. Since that time major improvements in safety performance have occurred. However, hiding within the statistics are some disturbing trends. This paper aims to analyse the progress made in the past 30 years and identify the current and emerging issues. Automation is bringing major production and safety benefits, but at the same time other factors such as the reduction in workforce numbers and ever-increasing production pressures are leading to high turnover rates. This in turn causes to a loss of experience and expertise. In addition, and of particular importance, is the recognition of psychosocial wellness on workforce safety. Many of these factors are not unique to the mining industry however they may be exacerbated by the scale of mining, the remoteness of the mines and family unfriendly mining rosters.
