The solubility of sulfur and rate of solution of sulfur in pure Lron were measured in H2S + H2 and H2S + H2 H2O gas mixtures. The solubility and diffusivity of sulfur at 1410°Care 0.13 pet S and 1.0 x 10-5 sq cm per sec, respectively. The solubility iS the same, but the rate of sulfurization is slower in the presence of H2O in the reacting gas. Under these conditions, the over-all rate is controlled jointly by a slow surface reaction and by solid-state diffusion; the mechanism for the surface reaction has not been identified. KNOWLEDGE of the behavior of sulfur in solid iron is desirable for the metallurgy of such products as free machining steel, where a high sulfur level is required, and inclusion-free high-strength steels, where the sulfur specifications are very low. The present investigation was undertaken to check previously reported values for sulfur solubility and diffusivity in 6 iron, and to study the poisoning effect of chemisorbed oxygen on sulfurization kinetics in H2-H2S-H2O gas mixtures. All of the experiments were performed at 1410°C. The thermodynamic behavior of sulfur in 6 iron was the subject of a paper by Rosenqvist and Dunicz.' The sulfur solubility at 1400" and 1500°C was determined by equilibrating pure iron specimens with H2-H2S gas mixtures. The maximum solubility of sulfur in 6 iron was alsc determined by Barloga, Bock, and parlee2 by reacting iron wires with sulfur in sealed capsules. In another investigation, the diffusion coefficient of sulfur in 6 iron at temperatures up to 1450°C was measured by Seibel.3 The method used was to measure sulfur concentration profiles in diffusion couples containing radioactive sulfur EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. A vertical resistance furnace wound with molybdenum wire and containing a recrystallized alumina reaction rube was used for the experiments. The hot zone in the furnace was approximately 2 in. long with a temperature variation of ±3oC. The hot zone temperature was automatically controlled to within ±2°C, and the test temperature was measured with a pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple before and after each experiment. Flow rates of the reacting gases were obtained using capillary flow meters. Materials. The source of H2S in the gas train was a premixed cylinder containing 5 pet H2S in H2. This mixture then was diluted with additional hydrogen and argon. In some experiments, water vapor was introduced by passing hydrogen and argon through a column containing 10 pet anhydrous oxalic acid and 90 pet oxalic acid dihydrate. The vapor pressure of water above this mixture is well-known.4 Argon was used as a diluent to minimize thermal segregation of H2S in the furnace5 and to reach higher H2O:H2 ratios than could be obtained in mixtures of H2 and H2S alone. Argon was purified by passage over copper chips at 350°C and subsequently over anhydrone. Hydrogen was purified by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C and then over anhydrone. The H2-H2S mixture was purified by passage over platinized asbestos and then over P2O5. The specimen stock was made by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zirconia crucible. The principal impurities are listed in Table I. In some of the equilibrium experiments, six-pass zone-refined iron was used to minimize impurity side effects. This zone-refined iron had a total impurity level of about 25 ppm. Procedure. Specimens were annealed in hydrogen for a period of at least 2 hr at the beginning of each experiment. The specimens were held in the reacting gas for times varying between 10 min and 17 hr, and cooled to room temperature in a water-cooled stainless-steel block at the bottom of the furnace. The pH2S/pH2 ratios reported are those for gas equilibrium at 1410°C. Calculations based on available thermodynamic data8 showed that the only other gaseous8 species that formed in significant amounts in the furnace were S2 and S. Even when water vapor was introduced into the gas mixture, the concentrations of SO2, SO, and so forth, were negligible. Dispersion-containing titanium-copper alloys were prepared having mean free paths varying from 1.0 to 9.7 P. Tensile studies at room temperature and at 1000°F showed that little or no strengthening occurred when the mean free path exceeded 3 p. The Laredo oil district, South Texas, includes an area of approximately 200 miles long north and south and 75 miles wide, embracing the following counties: Starr, Zapata, Jim Hogg, Webb, Duval and McMullen. The area is relatively old in respect to the production of oil, as the first oil was discovered and produced in the Piedra Pintas field in Duval County on Sept. 10, 1905. Since that date, continuous new discoveries have contributed to the development of this district until, at the present time, it is one of the important oil-producing and gas-producing areas in the world. The year 1937 also had its share of new discoveries in the district, including not only new oil fields but also new sands in already producing pools and important extensions to existing sands and fields. Among the most important field discoveries, by counties, are: Duval County..... Benavides, Sweden, Thomas-Lockhart, Labbe and Lundell fields Jim Hogg County.. Las Animas field McMullen County. Ezzell field Starr County...... El Tanque field Webb County..... Killam and Oilton fields Of these, Benavides, Oilton, Killam and Ezzell have so far proved themselves most important; the Benavides field, Duval County, showing by far the most activity. For the year 1937, therc were 283 wildcat tests drilled in this district, of which 35 were oil producers, 20 completed as gas wells and 228 abandoned as dry holes. Duval County, as usual, received the greatest amount of wildcat drilling, having 21 oil wells, 5 gas wells and 63 dry holes completed during the year for a total of 89 tests. Self-diffusion in Y uranium has been measured using U235 as the tracer isotope. The diffusion coefficient fits an Arrhenius-type equation D = 2.33 x 10 -3 exp (- 28,5000/RT) cm2/sec The values of Do and Q are unusually low and are not consistent with the values expected from theories based on a simple vacancy mechanism of diffusion. CYLINDRICAL samples, 1 cm in diam and 1/2 to 1 cm long, were prepared from high-purity uranium containing 0.0343 pct u235, Table I. The samples were water quenched from 690°C (the a-ß transformation is at 668°C) to remove preferred orientation, and annealed at 450 "C to minimize residual stresses. One end of each cylinder was polished on a 1-µ diamond lap and electropolished in a phosphoric acid solution. After a final cleaning by cathodic sputtering, a 1- to 3-µ thick layer of the tracer isotope, uranium containing 93 pct u235, was sputtered onto the sample.' To prevent contamination during the diffusion anneal, the diffusion couples were placed in a tantalum cup and covered with another piece of uranium, and the whole assembly was sealed off in an evacuated quartz tube. Annealing temperatures were constant within +2.0°C. The samples were heated and cooled slowly between room temperature and the ß-? transformation (774°C) in order to minimize distortion of the sample surface that might arise from aniso-tropic thermal expansion and density changes during phase transformations. RefineRs of lead by the Parkes process have always been solicitous of recovering the zinc used in the desilverization, and justly so, as the loss in zinc constitutes one of the heavy costs in this method of refining. Part of this loss is due to the absorption of zinc by lead, and in the present state of knowledge is not recoverable as metallic zinc. The remainder of the zinc, which finds its way into the precious-metal-bearing crust, is recoverable and naturally engages the operators' most exacting attention. Careful elimination of the impurities in base bullion has enabled the refiner to produce a zinc crust better adapted to retorting, which reflects favorably in the zinc recovery;- and to produce a richer crust, thereby lowering the zineking cost, as the increased efficiency of the zinc results in less of it being in circulation. It is obvious that if the ratio of concentration be increased, a lessening of the amount of crust formed will ensue, throwing less work on the retorts and diminishing the amount of retort metal sent to the cupels, thus making an actual money saving in all these operations. In the effort to obtain a rich crust, the metallurgist has increased the heat to a considerable degree, upon the assumption that at the higher temperature the zinc-dver alloy could be squeezed free from the adhering lead. A further possibility for improvement suggested itself in the freezing-point curve of Prof. H. C. Carpenter, upon zinc and silver. Study of this curve disclosed the existence of a definite chemical compound, Zn3Ag2, with a freezing point of 665" C., a promising compound for practical application. In the experiment undertaken it was endeavored to force this compound into the crust, hoping thereby to obtain a higher concentration than formerly. It was recognized that in bringing a large kettle of lead to such a heat, more fuel would be used, the life of the kettle would perhaps be shorter, and other disadvantages would be experienced. In the general study of coal, all evidence points in the one direction —that coals had their origin in a manner analogous to that of peat. The best method of studying coal, whether it concerns its chemistry, composition, or physical condition, is to study peat. The essentials in a study of peat are a knowledge of the chemistry of plants, knowledge of decay and of the transformation process of plant-substances into peat. A number of facts must be emphasized, namely, (1) peat is formed under wet conditions only; (2) plants grow in the place where peat is formed; (3) all the plant substances go into the bog; and (4) all the plant substances are subjected to a series of phases of decay which are (a) in the air completely above the water level but in relatively moist conditions; (b) above the water level, but covered by debris; and (c) completely submerged by both water and debris. Plant Chemistry Plant chemistry as a whole is remarkably well understood. The number of compounds composing plants is large, and it is not possible here to give even a comprehensive outline, but a classification into definite groups is possible; this is as follows: Carbohydrates; glucosides; pigments; tannins; acids, alcohols and ketones, etc., and their salts; essential oils; resins; vegetable bases; proteins; enzymes. Plant substances may also be grouped according to the role they play in the life of the plant, such as: Framework materials, living materials, food materials, protecting materials, waste materials. While this classification groups them well for. certain purposes, it does not group them exactly chemically; but in a consideration of the composition of coal, this is an excellent classification for our purpose here.

Thai means free. Historically accurate, as the country has never been subjugated by foreign occupation, the name "The Land of the Free" also seems to fit the attitude of the people. At the Bangkok airport, without so much as a kopkhun (thank you), travelers are found behind, beside and in front of ticket counters. A pretty Thai face on TV calls flights in English and Thai. Baggage disappears with alarming rapidity and your reporter and spouse despaired of ever being reunited with it. But at the entrance, all the parts came together and there was even a limousine from our hotel, The Oriental. Driving downtown English style, we noted that there were four lanes of traffic occupying the space we would allow for three lanes. Motorcycles and enclosed three-wheel motorcycle taxis were much in evidence, but the occasional water buffalo held up the slow lane. In the city, men wore European-type slacks and shirts but the women were colorful in traditional ankle-length wraparound skirts.

MERCAPTOBENZTHIAZOLE and its sodium salt are marketed under the trade names Flotagen and Flotagen S respectively, for use as collectors for cerussite and other minerals. The structural formulas for sodium mercaptobenzthiazole and for sodium ethyl xanthate are: [ ] Chemically there is a resemblance between the two compounds, though the free acid (mercaptobenzthiazole itself) is much more stable than xanthic acid. Both are readily oxidized, e.g., by iodine to disulphides, and can be estimated by iodometric titration. Qualitatively they are similar as collectors in flotation, although there are quantitative differences between them that may be important in practice. It is deduced that the influence of the nitrogen atom is subordinated to that of the sulphur atoms, and that the dominant group of these compounds is the mercapto group -SH or -SNa. The general method of investigation has been based on contact tests. Two temperatures, 10º and 35º C., have been chosen, and with a standard concentration of 20 mg. per liter of mercaptobenzthiazole (i.e., of the free acid) the influence of alkali, cyanide and copper sulphate on contact at sulphide mineral surfaces has been studied. This standard concentration corresponds to about 19 mg. per liter potassium ethyl xanthate; it brings out the differences between the minerals better than a higher concentra-
