STRICTLY speaking, ore-dressing does not commence until after the ore is in the mill bins, but where complex ores are treated and their minerals separated to make the best commercial concentrate with the lowest economical tailing, ore-dressing problems begin and often center in the mine itself. This does not refer to the grade of the ore, but rather to the frequent condition in which metallurgical results radically different from customary are obtained because of changes in the character of the ore treated. Different varieties of ore can usually be identified as coming from well-defined depths or zones in the mine, or from known sections of the orebody. Varying degrees of alteration of the ore, inclusions of harmful gangue material, or variations in the quantities of component metallic minerals are often causes of temporarily bad metallurgical results in otherwise successfully operated plants, especially those employing differential flotation to. recover several valuable minerals contained in the ore.

Measurements have been made of the rate of capture of single particles of strongly hydrophobic, surface-methylated, quartz, of sizes ranging from 12 to 40 µm diam., by single rising bubbles of diam. 0.5 to 1.1mm. The results agree closely with the theoretically calculated hydrodynamic collision rates, indicating that, in this system, every collision results in capture and retention of a particle.

Glass squares compressed on edge by steel jaws in poor contact with them developed jagged "partial-contact" cracks caused by the formation of local tensile stresses. Compressed by steel jaws in perfect contact, they developed smooth "release cracks" during release of the pressure, caused by the formation of local tensile stresses during the release of the pressure. All these cracks were parallel to the pressure. A Microflash photograph of a disintegrating specimen under sufficient pressure reveals a network of fractures roughly normal to each other, also "release cracks" and a disintegration cloud. The Griffith theory is amended to account for the formation of a first crack. A new theory, based on the theory of thermal agitation and wave propagation, is proposed to account for the progress, velocity and forking of cracks. The network of fractures is shown to have been caused by reflection at a free boundary of pressure pulses emanating from a first crack. Postulating equal distribution of energy in the pulses emitted on either side by a crack in particles, the smaller fragments are shown to continue fracturing preferentially while some of the coarser fragments remain as residual pieces. As comminution of the smaller fragments proceeds, the solid is reduced to a collection of residual particles of smaller and smaller sizes, accounting for the disintegration cloud. Experimental Procedure Apparatus A crushing device was built, consisting of a steel frame and two polished, hardened steel jaws to crush plate-glass samples. This device was placed between the plates of a hydraulic press (Fig. I). For centering the pressure, the upper jaw was guided vertically and provided with a rounded top. Later it was replaced by a steel jaw ground out of a 2½-in. steel ball, the lower surface being ground to an optical flat (Fig. 2). Four rollers were used to eliminate side thrust. Screws and centering blocks served to center the specimen in the crushing device. Hard steel shims placed under the shoulder of the upper jaw limited the "follow through'' of the jaw after failure of the specimen. Stress distribution was first examined with a polariscope mounted on an optical bench, using monochromatic light. It was found convenient to mount polaroid, quarter wave and monochromatic plates directly on the device itself. A Microflash unit* was used as light source for the photographs. In a paper1 before this Institute in 1940, the writer reported that the surface orientation texture of zinc and cadmium differed from the texture existing within the casting, in that basal planes were parallel to the surface. He was unable to rationalize the , origin of this surface texture. It is conceivable that the surface orientation texture is influenced by the atomic force fields, which are different at the surface and within the body of metal. It was considered that a radical changc in the surface against which the metal is cast might alter the surface texture. In trial of this, zinc has been cast against a surface of molten lead, but the same result has been obtained—i.e., (001) parallel, ± 2oo, to the surface—as was obtained when it was cast against air, Transite or iron.' Into the bottom of an open cast-iron tray, 7 by 14 in. by 2 in. deep, preheated to about 275°C., about 1/4 in. of lead, then 1/2 in. of zinc was poured, and the whole was covered with an electric heater to enforce freezing from the bottom upward. After a lapse of time sufficient for the zinc but not the lead to solidify, the zinc slab was raised free of the molten lead. The bottom surface of the zinc casting was coated with a thin layer of lead. A specimen of the slab 136 in. square was metallographically polished to flatten it and remove the slight film of lead, and the orientation was determined by the method used before,' with the result stated above. Some determinations have also been made on other metals, as follows: Surface orientation determinations were made on the 3/8-in. diameter grip section of two 1/4-in. diameter aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bars and on a 1/8 by 1/2-in. flat aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bar. None of these three aluminum die castings exhibited any preferred orientation at the surface. A brass die casting (nominal composition: 60 Cu, 37.75 Zn, 1.00 Sn, 1.00 Pb, 0.10 Al, 0.15 Si) furnished by C. S. Smith was also examined. The surface showed a random orientation of alpha and beta. Summary A zinc casting solidified against a molten lead surface was found to have the same surface orientation texture, (001) parallel to the surface, as other zinc and cadmium castings. The eleven mines of the United States Coal and Coke Co. in the Pocahontas coal field are situated in McDowell County, W. Va., which is a mountainous region. The valleys rarely exceed 200 ft. (60 m.) in width, the hillsides slope from 25°to 33°, and the tops, from 600 to 900 ft. above the valleys, carry practically no level land. At least 80 per cent. of the area is covered with timber. All the workings are drift mines; and while the average grades of the seams worked are ample for drainage, local dips and swamps necessitate the use of a large number of local pumps or of numerous drainage ditches to keep the mines free from water during heavy rains. The water handled in any mine is not great, compared with the coal output, and usually causes little trouble except during extremely wet periods. In new workings, the water encountered, except in rare cases, is trifling; it is only after rib drawing has started and the surface has been broken that water troubles begin. The strata overlying the coal are sandstone, shales, and slates; as the soil is thin and sandy, it does not tend to puddle and stop the cracks, which remain open for a long time. As mining progresses and the robbed area increases, the broken area becomes larger, increasing the openings into the mined territory. The cover over the robbed portions of the mines varies from 30 to 750 ft. (9 to 228 m.). When the ground is saturated, considerable water finds its way into the mines the day after a heavy rainfall and for three or four days it tends to fill the low places, wash the tracks, etc. and unless from three to four times as many pumps are installed as are normally needed, considerable output is lost. In most cases the water will flow from the mines, and the obvious solution is to provide drainage ditches of ample size to carry the maximum flow expected, so that the inflow will have no opportunity to flood the working places. Laying out the drainage headings on the proper average grades was an easy matter but where blasting was necessary to provide uniform grades, as was frequently the case, it was important that the maximum flow to be expected and the size of ditches to be provided should be known so that only rock work necessary to provide proper drainage

Y.:—Do I understand correctly that the rolls are at first simple cylinders, one longer than the other, and that flanges are subsequently formed on the longer roll as the result of wear only ? Mr. Payne :—The flanges are formed by the wearing of the shorter roll into the other, which is about an inch longer. When the roll-shells are new, the longer one has machined at each end a ridge about 1/8 in. or 0.25 in. higher than the face. These slight projections help to center and steady the rolls, by locating the flanges in advance. Possibly they might be left off at the start; but Mr. Frazee has found it better, in machining the new roll-shells, to turn such small flanges upon the longer one. In his practice the feed-stream is extended a short distance beyond the two ends of the shorter roll-shell. This allows a small amount of crushing to be done between the flange-ftices and the vertical ends of the shorter roll-shell, which prevents any ridges from forming at the ends of the shorter roll-shell.

Brief Economic History of Quicksilver in the United States Quicksilver ore was first discovered in the United States at what was later the New Almaden mine in California, in the year 1824. Production also began here, but not until 1850, when it was stimulated by the active demand caused by gold-mining operations. Prospecting for quicksilver was active, high-grade ores were found and ample production lowered the price from $100 per flask in 1850 to about half that figure for the greater part of the next 10 years. During the succeeding decade, many new quicksilver mines were found; production increased at a time when the local demand diminished, so that most of the product was exported. The third decade of quicksilver mining in the United States witnessed the development of the pan amalgamation process, particularly in Com-stock silver-mining operations. A suddenly increased demand sent prices soaring, the all-time peak of quicksilver production followed, and the highest price was soon replaced by the lowest one on record. Huge quantities of quicksilver were exported between 1870 and 1880 and exports continued in decreasing measure for three decades to 1910. In

William Andrews Clark, former United States senator from Montana, died at his home in New York on March 2, at the age of 86, after a brief illness due to pneumonia. He was the last of the three great Montana mining magnates, Clark, Daly and Heinze. He was born in Connellsville, Pa., on Jan. 8, 1839, and in 1863 arrived in Bannock, Ida., with only five dollars, after a journey of 65 days. On reaching Idaho, he became successively a miner, teamster, machinist, railway builder, mine owner, capitalist and, in his more recent years, philanthropist and art collector.

An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. The revised program-written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State's Computation Center-is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following: 1) Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all airways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2) Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3) Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values. The basis of analysis used is the Hardy Cross method of successive approximation for solution of any fluid network, explained in detail in the earlier article. In brief, corrections to assumed air flows are computed for all the loops of a network; following distribution to the airways of each loop, the process is repeated until acceptable accuracy is attained. When a hand or desk-calculator solution is used, there is advantage to close approximation of the actual flows in the original assumption of air-flow distribution in the network. Since publication of the previous paper, in which assumption of initial quantities was also necessary in the computer solution, the program has been modified to make the first distribution itself, assigning the total quantity to one specified path in a split and then proceeding to correct the flows. The number of iterations required for a high-accuracy solution is little affected, at least in networks of few loops, 10 to 15 being sufficient to reduce the error to 1 pct or less. The principal limitation of the original program was that it contained no provision for handling a fan. Further, it did not determine the overall head loss in the network and was not designed for multiple parallel openings, such as occur in coal mines. The revised program was written to overcome these disadvantages and also to print out the adjusted flows for all airways, corrected for the system operating point. At the present time, the program can handle only an external fan. The procedure employed in solving a ventilation network is now as follows: 1) Input data consisting of airway characteristics and loop designation along with assumed direction of flow, for each branch of the network and any trunk airways, are fed into the computer. 2) Employing the resistance relationship, where R is resistance, K is friction factor, P is perimeter, L is length, A is area, and n is number of airways (where multiple intakes and returns are employed); values are computed for all airways. 3) An arbitrary, continuous route of flow through the circuit—from beginning to end—is selected and the path identified by airway numbers and read in. 4) Based on a total assumed quantity of flow Q (usually 100,000 cfm.) the computer employs the procedure described in the previous article in distributing quantities of flow among all the airways until a satisfactory level of accuracy has been attained (in the current program, the machine is turned off when the cumulative corrective error in cfm, is reduced to five times the number of airways). 5) Airway head losses H are calculated by the relation H = R Q2 and cumulated along the original designated flow route to find the overall head loss for the network. Trunk airways are then included to obtain the mine head.

It is administered as a public reference library of engineering and the allied sciences. It contains 133,000 volumes and pamphlets, 6700 maps and receives currently most of the important periodicals in its field. In order to place the resources of the Library at the disposal of those unable to visit it in person, the Library is prepared to furnish lists of references to engineering subjects, copies or translations of articles, and similar assistance. Charges sufficient to cover the cost of this work are made.

The National Pocahontas Mine in Wyoming County, WV, has been developed in the Pocahontas No. 3 coal. During 14 months of ventilation surveys, the locations of large rockfalls, many in areas infrequently visited by mine personnel, were mapped. Several dozen rockfalls were later studied in detail. Kettlebottoms, rider seams, root-penetrated roof strata, slicken sides, and shales that spall are common in areas with a high density of rockfalls. Large-scale crossbedding and micaceous and carbonaceous films in sandstones are less common. Density of rockfalls in any area is related to the time elapsed since mining, thickness of overburden, and orientation of entries and panels. Some linear features overlie areas where rockfalls are densest. Most rockfalls occur during summer.

The present paper records a chapter in the history of the development of an electrolytic manganese industry in the United States.l A relatively large pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., for the production of electrolytic manganese was conceived as part of the national defense program to make this country independent of foreign importation of manganese ore. The first authorization, in November 1940, however, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity. Improvements in process and subsequent additions to some sections authorized by subsequent appropriations have enabled the plant to produce as much as 2000 lb. of manganese a day for substantial periods of time. Since in pilot-plant operation frequent changes are made in the flowsheet, the electrolytic manganese plant was constructed so that equipment could be rearranged with a minimum of expense and time. Several different kinds of the various ¦ types of equipment were installed for many of the operations, so that the one most suitable for the process might be chosen. Pilot-plant operations were begun in November 1941 and have been continuous except for brief shutdowns for installation of new equipment. More than one-half million pounds of manganese have been produced. The improvements in process, selection of equipment, and operational procedure developed are recorded here. Development of the Process The work of early investigators on the electrolysis of manganese solutions has been reviewed by Shelton. Until the method of continuous production of manganese by electrolysis was perfected by SheltonZm4 and coworkers, no practical procedure had been devised. The method as originally developed by the Bureau of Mines will be described here only briefly. The manganese dioxide ore was reduced in a rotating kiln-type furnace at 650°C. in an atmosphere of "city" gas. The calcine was leached with spent electrolyte and enough sulphuric acid to produce a neutral leach solutioil containing 2 5 grams manganese per liter as manganese sulphate and zoo grams per liter of ammonium sulphate. Arsenic was removed from the solution by the addition of 0.0j gram iron per liter as ferrous sulphate followed by oxidation with manganese dioxide, and aeration, which precipitated the iron as ferric hydroxide. Much has been said about the foreseeable exhaustion of known mineral reserves-particularly in the United States. It is claimed that we are about to become a have-not nation insofar as certain essential minerals are concerned; and in this respect our position is often contrasted with that of the world as a whole, largely because we have drawn so heavily on our domestic resources during the last fifty years. As a matter of fact, the difference is not great if one takes a reasonably long-term view of the situation. No one denies that nature endowed the United States richer in mineral resources than any other equal area. It is granted that we have skimmed the cream of many kinds of minerals; but in a free international trade in minerals it would not be many decades before the richer deposits-at least the deposits easy of discovery throughout the world would be depleted to much the same degree as those in the United States today. For it is a fact that the problem of satisfying the needs of our industrial society for minerals is fundamentally worldwide in scope. The singular and significant attribute to all minerals is that there is but a single crop. Forests can be grown, but mineral deposits can be replaced only by finding new ones. Thus, one of the vital tasks of the mining engineer, the petroleum engineer, and the geologist is to find these new mineral resources. Another task is to devise means and methods for the exploitation of, at costs that are economic, low-grade deposits and those deeply buried in the crust of the earth. The first need, however, is to find the deposits in the ground. If the assumptions of those who today fear an early exhaustion of all deposits are valid, the outlook for continued material and social progress is gloomy indeed. I take a more optimistic view, for it is my belief that vast new sources of needed minerals will have come to light before our known resources are gone. The real question is whether the outside layer of the crust of the earth that is accessible to engineers contains adequate mineral deposits; and whether engineers can find those deposits. The answer must be based on geologic science, geologic fact, and mining history. Every continent, and almost every country, has yielded minerals of industrial utility in substantial quantity. Mineral deposits are widespread. Geologists know the conditions that were favorable to the occurrence of ores and the types of rocks in which various kinds of ores may ordinarily be found. They know that such rocks occur over broad regions of the earth's surface. They also know that in large areas rocks that are potential carriers of ores are covered and concealed by material of entirely different character. Such cover may consist of lava flows, layers of volcanic ash, or beds of material washed down from the surrounding mountains. Sometimes those covers are thick, sometimes relatively thin. But men well-qualified to pass judgment are sure that concealed deposits, large in number and in size, exist close enough to the surface to make exploitation practical. Only by actual penetration of the surface can this contention be proved, but to conclude otherwise would be to ignore the laws of probability and to deny the over-all consistency of nature. The task of probing the crust of the earth to determine the location of these deposits, and to obtain some notion of their size and quality, poses serious problems. However, they should not be beyond human solution. Much more research must be done in analyzing and explaining the laws of ore deposition. New tools, in the shape of techniques and methods and of mechanical and electrical devices and instruments, must be developed. But no reasonable person can doubt that these objectives will be achieved. As the need becomes increasingly pressing, scientists and engineers will supply the imagination and the ingenuity that will provide the solution. The time and effort thus far devoted to the development of methods for locating hidden ore bodies have been pitifully meager. Energetic investigation of the subject of applied geophysics is essential to the success of the mineral industry, and I have no hesitation in predicting that effective techniques will be found and successfully applied.
