The Minister of Geology of the Soviet Union P.Ya. Antropov, recently visited China and claims that this country occupies one of the foremost places in the world in reserves of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, antimony, iron ore, coal, and phosphates. Occurrences of economic value of chromite, nickel, gold, beryllium, tantalum, niobium, rare earths, and asbestos have also been reported. MINERAL RESOURCES Coal: The inferred reserves of coal are estimated at at 1,500 billion tons. A considerable part of the coal reserves is represented by coking coal, 80% of which is bituminous. Thicknesses of coal seams range up to 150 ft in the principal deposits located in northern and northeastern China. The total output of coal in 1958, 270 million tons, was produced by an army of 20 million people mainly in small mines operated by the agricultural communes. MODERN mine maps are largely a product of evolution. The first mine maps used in the west were old composite maps with all the levels plotted on the same sheet. The composite was widely used and occasionally is seen even now. This type of underground map had serious limitations. One was the development of an indecipherable complex of workings around steep shafts. The other limitation was that of size; often when a working passed the limit of the sheet no map was made of it. These old maps have been superseded by the single level maps, laid out in squares or rectangles which can be expanded indefinitely in all directions. This produces a system capable of unlimited expansion in three dimensions, with all the detail of every working clearly marked and legible. A good set of mine maps should be laid out in blocks, all blocks of equal size. Each block should be limited by plane coordinates without overlap on bounding map quadrangles. At all times the direction of North should be indicated as an aid in remembering bearings of underground workings. It is desirable that all maps of whatever scale be plotted on sheets of uniform size. In fact, it is possible to make nearly all underground maps, surface maps and sections on sheets of the same size.

The symposium on production for the year 1940 contains few papers on the foreign situation. It is probable that the foreign part of next year's symposium will be even shorter. This is due to rigid censorship in various countries, as the question of the volume of petroleum supplies has become one of great strategic importance. This is even more true than in the last war, owing to greater mechanization of armies. 'It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts from Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not de-terminable frod data available to the author, please inserty; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In sucli cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved') and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. In order to reduce the complexity of mechanisms influencing rock. fragmentation by blasting a simulation approach is proposed, using the capabilities of microcomputer interactive graphics. Situations involving cratering end bench blasting are simulated, and both jointed and intact rocks can be subjected to explosive action, taking into consideration its breakage mechanisms. Size analysis curves relating rock distribution before and after the blasts are determined and compared with field data.

Geological Survey topographic mapping parties started initial operations in the 1953 Alaskan mapping program. One area to be covered is 17,000 sq miles in the Kantishna River, Melozitna, Tanana Fairbanks, Healy and Mt. McKinley section. The other area to be covered is the Kenai, Tyonek, Blying Sound and Seldovia areas. Average starting salary earned in 1952 by Columbia University School of Engineering graduates was $4000 yearly. This year's graduates can expect to start at about $4300, according to a survey taken by Columbia. Figures cover only those with Bachelor degrees. Graduates with a Master's started at an average of $500 per year more.

No records have been found of coal in the old Spanish documents, although some mention of it probably exists in manuscripts. Coal was found in Mt. Diablo, in Contra Costa County, about five miles south of the San Joaquin River in 1852, but the first mine, the Teutonia, was located in 1858. The deposits are located on both sides of a high ridge, and vessels of 1,000 tons burden could ascend the river to the nearest point to the mines.1 In 1854, coal was found about four miles from Oroville, on the Feather River, in Butte County. Development work was started and in 1856 a mine was opened. From the description the coal was likely a variety of lignite and probably never amounted to anything commercially, as it does not appear again in the records 2 The more valuable mines at Mt. Diablo were opened in 1859 and 1860. By 1867 there had been 11 mines started and at that time five were in operation. The seam conditions were much disturbed and lack of knowledge of them caused much waste of effort and money. All of the coal excepting that used locally and in nearby towns, was shipped to San Francisco, and largely used for steam purposes. The first receipts were in 1861-6,620 tons. A railroad to the river had been constructed and opened in February 1866. The Corral Hollow field in Alameda County was found and prospected to a small extent in 1862. Two mines were opened but little work was done and the field was then abandoned. Good exposures were rare and the cost of underground exploration was then prohibitive. The Commercial mine produced coal in 1869 and 1870, but a fire in the latter year destroyed the tipple and communications to the mine. The Livermore mine was abandoned after 18 months operation in 1875 and 1876 and no other work was done here until the nineties. Germanium and silicon have been plastically deformed in torsion at elevated temperatures. Slip took place on the four {Ill} planes. Dislocations, revealed by etch pits on a (111) face, occurred in rows that were traces of operative slip planes. THE plastic deformation of germanium and silicon by bending and tension at elevated temperatures has been reported by Gallagher.&apos; Transla-tional slip during plastic flow in these materials, according to Gallagher&apos; and Treuting,&apos; occurs on (111) planes. Recent work by Treuting&apos; indicates the direction of slip to be <1l0>. The present paper describes the plastic flow characteristics of germanium and silicon deformed by torsion. Torsional deformation was accomplished by twisting 1/4x1/4x2 in. specimens held in molybdenum grips and contained in an atmosphere of helium in a transparent quartz tube and heated by an external resistance furnace. The angular displacements were measured on a graduated circle with a pointer attached to the movable grip. Temperatures were measured with a chromel-alumel couple; the hot junction was within the quartz tube and in close proximity to the specimen. Photographs of samples of germanium and silicon twisted at 850" and 1180°C, respectively, are shown in Fig. 1. The germanium was twisted 230" per in. and the silicon 80" per in. These deformations are larger than those used in experiments to be described later and are presented only to emphasize the extensive plasticity of these materials. Germanium A single crystal specimen of germanium (n-type, 7 ohm-cm resistivity) with a (111) plane normal within 3" of the torsion axis, Fig. 2, was chemically polished with CP-4 solution" and then twisted 9" during the twisting of these specimens of germanium, the slip lines from the (lli) plane should have appeared in the four lateral faces instead of in only two. Perhaps the absence of rotational slip is brought about by the square cross-section. A cylindrical specimen would have a more uniform stress distribution in torsion than one with a square cross-section, and may deform by rotational slip. Among the names which won a world-wide fame during the golden age of the early fifties, Bendigo and Ballarat were to Australia, what the Yuba and Grass Valley were to California. The map of Victoria did not for a long time show the name of old Bendigo;* for this first and more distinctive name was replaced with the more English Sandhurst, just as the alluvial diggings gave place to quartz mining. Towards the close of last pear, steps were taken to give back the old name, as associated with the early days of rich alluvium, and more suggestive than the application taken secondhand from an English military academy. History. The first discovery of gold? in this district, was made in the autumn of 1851 ; but there has never been any certainty as to the day or the man. At that time the country around Bendigo Creek was a part of the Ravenswootl sheep-run, and its resemblance to the Forest Creek district (now Castlemaine), induced the first prospecting. It was late in November when the "rush" broke out; the shepherds left their flocks; the sylvan solitudes were disturbed by * The name of Bendigo is said to have been derived from a hut-keeper on the Ravenswood sheep-run, who on account of his fondness for " fisticuffs " was nicknamed Bendigo, after the prize-fighter of that name. It is not aboriginal, as is often supposed, but Spanish ; and equivalent to our Benedict. There must always be some confusion between the two names of Sandhurst and Bendigo; the town, and with it the gold-field, having been three tinies named. Several other old familiar names have been likewise unfortunately replaced by second-hand English ones; so that an old digger talks of Forest Creek when he means the modern Castlemaine, Mt. Ida for Heathcote, Growler&apos;s Creek for Bright, etc. I shall use the names Sandhurst and Bendigo interchangeably. The first discovery of gold in Australia, was made by E. H.Hargraves, February 12, 1851, near Bathurst in New South Wales. In August of the same year the discovery at Buninyong, near Ballarat, inaugurated the first of a series of rushes to the Victoria gold-fields.

All that England has today in the way of effective armament has been invented, designed, made, and the crews trained since the war began, because the totalitarian aggressor introduced new types of equipment and new techniques.

The Crucible mine in Pennsylvania, operating on Pittsburgh seam coal, is rated at 5000 tpd. The washing plant, built in 1943, is rated at about 400 tph, using hydroseparator boxes to wash the coarse coal (4 x 5/16 in.) and hydrotator units for the fine coal (5/16 x 0). It is generally acknowledged that gravity concentration equipment cannot be used efficiently to bene-ficiate coal finer than about 65 mesh. Before the present flotation circuit was installed, Crucible recovered its fine coal slurry, predominantly —24 mesh material, by passing it through a battery of five 14-in. and one hundred and ten 3-in. Hey1 & Patterson cyclones in parallel with a 75-ft Dorr thickener. About two thirds went to the cyclones and one third to the thickener. Underflows from cyclones and thickener were filtered, respectively, in one 12-disk Eimco and two 4-disk Oliver filters fitted with stainless steel cloth. The resulting cakes were added to the coarse metallurgical coal. The filtrates, overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, and thickener overflow were recycled to the coarse coal plant. The three major problems encountered in this system became acute when the mine switched from track-mounted machinery to the more economical off-track equipment. The quality and uniformity of product declined, too much slime accumulated in the circuit, and waste pond disposal became highly impracticable. Lowering of Quality and Uniformity: Since the filter cake was not beneficiated in any way, addition of this material, which contained about 18 pct ash. would certainly lower the quality of metallurgical coal. Difficulties of handling the high-ash, high-moisture cake were compounded by the lack of adequate blending facilities at the mine, making it impossible to maintain uniform feed for the coke ovens. For a two-month test period, to verify the source of trouble, all filter cake was excluded from the metallurgical coal. The excluded filter cake was stocked in the yard. Slime Buildup: The moisture retained in the coarse coal products and the filter cake provided daily the only means of slime bleed from the circuit. As this bleed was not enough to offset the incoming fines in the raw coal feed, there was excessive buildup of slimes. To operate at all, it was necessary to purge the system each weekend by pumping all the solids from the thickener to a waste pond. The slimes built up during the week progressively increased the apparent viscosity and density of the circulating plant water, so that hydroseparators and hydrotator units had to be constantly adjusted. Uniformity, yield, and quality of the metallurgical coal suffered in consequence, and the filter cake ash and moisture contents increased from Monday to Friday. Limited Waste Disposal: Location of the plant does not permit unlimited waste pond area. Maintenance of a waste pond for the purpose of emptying the thickener during weekends became a costly burden that could not be tolerated. HOW THE PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED The flowsheet (Fig. 1) chosen to overcome these difficulties is considered the one most economical to install and operate. In a preliminary change made before the flotation circuit was installed, the cyclones and thickener were first operated in series, the overflow from the 3-in. cyclones, after flocculation, being discharged into the thickener and the thick-

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of preventable electrical source injuries is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

IT would clearly be advantageous to produce molten titanium, suitable for alloying and casting, directly from the relatively inexpensive tetra-chloride, without using a metallic reducing agent. Accordingly, a preliminary investigation has been made of the production of titanium by hydrogen reduction of the tetrachloride in an electric arc furnace. For the reaction: TiCl4(g) + 2H2(g) ? Ti(s) + 4HCl(g), Lockhart and his colleagues&apos; have calculated equilibrium constants at 800" to 1500°K, based on tables of Brewer.&apos; Extrapolating these data on the assumption that the heat of reaction varies linearly with temperature, and using Brewer&apos;s value for the heat of fusion, there is obtained for the reaction: TiCl4(g) + 2H2(g) ? Ti(l) + 4HCl(g) an equilibrium constant at 2100°K (100" above the melting point) Kp = (PHCl)4/pTlcl4 (Ph2)2 = 0.167 atm. If this is correct, starting with hydrogen saturated with TiC14 at 25°C, where the vapor pressure of the latter3 is 12.6 mm, and maintaining the overall pressure at 1 atm, 99 1/4 pct of the TiC14 would be reduced to Ti at equilibrium. An arc furnace designed for the melting of titanium and lined with water-cooled copper was used for the preliminary experimental check. Its inside diameter was 2 7/16 in. and height 6 in. The water-cooled electrode was tipped with 3/4 in. diam tung-sten. In the one run carried out, the furnace was charged with a starting batch of 293.35 g of scrap titanium,&apos; analyzing 99.24 pct Ti. After the system was twice pumped out and flushed with argon to remove air, the arc was struck in argon and kept at 400 amp dc, electrode negative, for 1 min to melt the starting batch. Commercial tank hydrogen, dried by passing over silica gel and bubbled through technical grade TiC14 at room temperature, was then admitted to the furnace. The inlet tube directed this gas downward toward the arc and melt; the gas outlet was at the top of the furnace. The quantity of gas passed through was not measured accurately but is estimated to be about 50 liters per min at a few mm of mercury above atmospheric pressure. The arc was held in the H2-TiC14 mixture at 400 amp with little difficulty. After 10 min the arc burned through the copper lining above the melt, admitting water and ending the run. (This had happened frequently in straight melting runs under argon, and is not thought due to the atmosphere used.) In the furnace were found an ingot, several small pieces, and a little metallic powder, evidently formed when water entered the hot furnace. Some titanium also clung to the electrode. The portions were weighed and separately analyzed for titanium. Their total weight was 321.76 g of 94.82 pct overall purity. Much of the impurity consisted of tungsten broken off when the titanium was removed from the electrode. No detailed impurity analysis was made because the starting materials were impure and flooding the furnace introduced further contamination. Thus, the metal recovered contained 305.08 g Ti, as compared to 291.12 g in the starting batch. Titanium could not have been carried over from previous melting runs in the furnace, as the interior was sandblasted and the electrode ground clean before the run. Evidently at least 13.96 g of Ti were produced from TiCl4. Since this would require complete reduction of 430 liters of TiCl, gas at 12.6 mm of Hg, the efficiency of the process must have been rather high. Experimental work is continuing. No reason is seen why the process could not be scaled up to the size of a 30-ton steel-melting arc furnace. In a large unit there would be a large molten pool from which liquid metal could be withdrawn for alloying and casting. The problems of electrodes and power supply are similar to those arising in arc furnaces for melting titanium. Unreacted TiC14 and the HC1 in the exhaust gases could be recovered; unreacted H2 could be dried and re-used. The melt would be saturated with hydrogen, whose solubility in liquid titanium is unknown. Small amounts of hydrogen seem to have little effect on the properties of titanium.5 If the amount introduced was so large as to impair properties or cause casting difficulties, it could be reduced by holding the melt under an inert gas or by pumping on it, prior to casting. In the last ten years large gains have been made in the field of blasting. These gains have been both in the theoretical and in the practical application of explosives. One of the most publicized changes in the practical application of commercial explosives is the now-prevalent use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The new water-compatible mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT should also have a large field of application. Most of the theoretical gains have been concerned with the actual rock breakage obtained with explosives. In the last ten years, large gains have been made in the field of blasting. These gains have been both in the theoretical and in the practical application of explosives. One of the most publicized changes in the practical application of commercial explosives is the now prevalent use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The new water-compatible mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT should also have a large field of application. Most of the theoretical gains have been concerned with the actual rock breakage obtained with explosives. EXPANDING-GAS-BUBBLE THEORY There has been an outstanding change in the conception of how an explosive produces rock failure. The early theory which explained rock breakage was correct for some of the first force-producing agents such as quicklime. When a drillhole was filled with quicklime and water added, the material expanded and steam was generated. The expanding material and the steam exerted a slowly increasing pressure on the sides of the drillhole. The force broke the rock by splitting. Because a great quantity of gas was produced by the deflagration of gunpowder, the same process of the gas pressure splitting the rock was assumed to take place. Even after 80 years of use, the rock-breaking action of all high explosives was thought to be caused entirely by the expanding gas bubble which tore and split the rock. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through an exploding spherical charge of high explosive. It illustrates the early theory which attributed the entire breakage to the expanding gas bubble. The basic idea of this theory is that the breakage started at the explosive charge and progressed toward the free face. REFLECTED-WAVE THEORY me expanding-gas- bubble theory has gradually been replaced by the reflected-wave theory. The reflected-wave theory explains rock failure by explosives in the following manner: The enormously high gas pressure in the drillhole produces fracturing of the rock on the sides of the drillhole. The fracturing around a 1 1/2-in. diam drillhole is usually confined to an area with about a 6-in. diam. In the fractured area, the pressure of the gas is reduced until the force on the walls is no longer capable of fracturing the rock. Although the gas pressure does not continue to fracture the rock, the pressure imposes a high impact stress on the wall rock. In addition, a pressure or seismic pulse is produced in the rock. The pulse is probably entirely a compression pulse when originally produced in the rock. But, with distance, part of the energy of the compression pulse is transformed into a tension pulse which follows the compression pulse. The explosive charges and burdens used in conventional mine blasting are such that the tension pulse of the original wave is probably too small to be considered in a practical evaluation of the theory. The compression pulse is transmitted through the rock with no associated fracturing.

Activity-composition curves jor cobalt oxide and manganese oxide in solid solutions with spinel-type structure have been determined by studying the equilibrium between the spinel phase and a coexisting solid-solution phase in the tewzperature range 1100" to 1400"C. Within limits of experimental error, the system displays the behavior of a regular solution. The excess integral free energy of mixing is represented by the equation . The standard free energy of formation of cobalt manganite, CoMn,O,, from the oxide components COO mzd Mn2OS at 1200°C is calculated to be -8.6 kcal. AMONG the technologically and theoretically most important oxide phases are those which crystallize with the same structure type as the mineral MgO . A120,. Although the name spinel originally was used only for this mineral, the term is generally used today to designate the whole group of oxide phases with this same structure type. It is in this wider meaning that the term is being used in the present paper. The previous literature on spinels is very extensive. There are two aspects of spinels which have attracted particular attention: the structure, including the nature and distribution of the cations present, and the physical properties (electric, magnetic). The status of knowledge in these fields has been well-summarized in recent review articles.1&apos;2 By contrast, thermodynamic properties of spinels are virtually unknown. Delineation of the activity-composition curve over the whole composition range of a solid-solution series with spinel-type structure is the objective of the present work. The system at elevated temperatures (>1000"C) constitutes such a series. The activity-composition curves for this system can be calculated from a study of the equilibrium between the above spinel solid solution and a solid solution (Co,Mn)O with sodium chloride-type structure. Data for the latter solid solution have become available recently.3 The system, in contact with metallic CO at 1200°C, obeys Raoult&apos;s law. The determination of the activity-composition curve for the spinel phase is based on the following relations. Consider the reduction-oxidation equilibrium for cobalt ions according to the equation: Because it is impossible in practice to measure single activities of electrically charged constituents, we will treat the equilibria in terms of electrically neutral components. Eq. [I] can then formally be written as follows: where and the activities of cobalt oxide in the (Co,Mn)O and the spinel solid-solution phases, respectively, K is a constant at constant temperature, and Pa is the oxygen pressure of the gas phase. The numerical value of K can be determined from a determination of the oxygen pressure P& for the equilibrium coexistence of Cos04 and COO in the binary system Co-0. Under these circumstances be set equal to 1, and hence K = [Po Eq. [3] can therefore be written

Iodine is a soft, lustrous, grayish-black non- metallic element with a density of 4.9. It is the least active of the four members of the halogen family. The other members are, in order of increasing activity, bromine, chlorine, and fluorine. Iodine is a solid at ordinary temperatures, while bromine is a liquid and chlorine and fluorine are gases. Iodine melts at 113°C and volatilizes at 184.4°C to a blue- violet gas with an irritating odor. It occurs in nature only as iodates and iodides or other combined forms. It was discovered by Bernard Courtois in France in 1811, who noticed its presence as an unknown substance in crude soda ash obtained from burning seaweed. Gay-Lussac recognized it as a new element and named it iode, from the Greek word "ioeides or iodes" for violet color (MacMillan, 1970). The world production is not known with any great certainty, but it is probably between 20 and 25 million lb per year, of which about 25% is consumed in the United States. Geology and Mineralogy Iodine compounds occur as a minor constituent as a mineral in the Chilean nitrate deposits and in solution in brines and sea- water. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it is the 47th most abundant element in the earth&apos;s crust. The minerals lautarite, Ca (10,) (calcium iodate), and dietzeite, Ca, (10,) , (CrO,) , (calcium iodate-chromate) are found in Chilean nitrate deposits which are located in Antofagasta and Tarapach provinces on the eastern slope of the coast range in a desert area. Various brines contain iodine compounds. Seawater contains about 0.05 ppm of iodine and some seaweeds will extract and accumulate it up to 0.45% on a dry basis. Some coals in West Germany also contain iodine compounds. The known and potential sources of iodine reported in 1968 are given in [Table 1]. Iodine has been recovered from brines in Java, Indonesia, France, England, and the USSR. Iodine has also been recovered from seaweed in Ireland, Scotland, France, Japan, Norway, and the USSR. The indicated re- serves and future resources of iodine are large but have never been adequately measured. Analysis Iodine as the free element can be detected by the characteristic blue color it gives to a starch solution. Quantitatively it is determined as the free element by titration with standard thiosulfate solutions using starch as an indicator. Colorimetric methods are also applicable.

John F. Myers (Consulting Engineer, Greenwich, Corm.)—Since the art of comminution has lain practically dormant for many years, it is very interesting that R. T. Hukki approaches the subject with a new concept. One is reminded of the research carried on by A. W. Fahrenwald of Moscow, Idaho, a few years ago. Fahrenwald mounted a steel bowl on a vertical shaft. The balls and ore placed in the bowl were rotated at fast speeds, thus simulating the supercritical speeds used by Hukki. The rolling action of the balls against the smooth shell liner has pretty much the same effect. The action is horizontal in one case and vertical in the other. Both researchers report good grinding activity. It is also constructive that such able investigators give to the students of comminution their interpretation of their laboratory results in terms of large-scale operation. History shows that it takes a lot of time for such radically new ideas to be absorbed by the industry. Typical of this is the present-day activity of cyclone classification in primary grinding circuits. The idea of cyclone classification has been kicking around for 30 or 40 years. Certainly we all suspect that the ponderous grinding mills of today, and their accessory apparatus, large buildings, etc., will ultimately give way to small fast units, just as this has occurred in other industries over the past 50 years. At the moment there is no evidence that ball and liner wear is prohibitively high. In fact, at the time Fahrenwald was demonstrating his high-speed horizontal machine at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, several years ago, he assured this writer that the balls retained their shape much longer than they do in conventional tumbling mills. Rods and balls that slide (as some operators in uranium plants are experiencing) get flat. Apparently the balls have a rolling action. Mr. Hukki&apos;s references to the processing capacity of the Tennessee Copper Co. mills is adequate. Those studying this subject will be greatly interested in the paper presented by Richard Smith of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Vancouver April 24, 1958. This paper will be published during the latter part of 1958 in the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Bulletin. Hukki&apos;s pioneering spirit is to be commended. R. T. Hukki (author&apos;s reply)—It has been heartening to read the objective discussion by J. F. Myers. The sincerity of his opinions is further strengthened by the fact that the article he has discussed contradicts in a major way the parallel achievements of his life work. Myers is right in his opinion that in general it takes a long time before new ideas are accepted by the industry. On the other hand, revolutions usually take place at supercritical speeds. There are many indications at present that both the unit operation of grinding and the related subject of size control are now just about ripe for a revolution. In grinding, brute force must ultimately give way to science. Rapid progress can be anticipated in the following fields: 1) Autogenous fine grinding at supercritical speeds will be the first advance and the one that will gain recognition most easily on industrial scale. At this moment, little Finland appears to be leading the world. Crocker recently made a statement that in nine cases out of ten, your own ore can be used as grinding medium more effectively and far more economically than steel balls. This is true. The present author would like to introduce a supplementary idea: In eight cases out of the nine cited above, it can be done at the highest overall efficiency in the supercritical speed range. Fine grinding must be based on attrition, not impact. The path of attrition may be vertical, horizontal, even inclined. 2) In coarse grinding, the conventional use of rods is sound practice. However, even the rods can be replaced by autogenous chunks large enough to offer the same impact momentum as the rods. To obtain the momentum, the chunks must be provided with a free fall through a sufficient height in horizontal mills operated at supercritical speeds. Coarse grinding must be based on impact. Detailed analysis of the subject may be found in a paper entitled "All-autogenous Grinding at Supercritical Speeds" in Mine and Quarry Engineering, July 1958. 3) All conventional methods of classification, including wet and dry cyclones, are inefficient in sharpness of separation. Continuous return of huge tonnages of finished material to the grinding unit with the circulating load is senseless practice. In the near future the present methods will be either replaced or supplemented by precision sizing. These three fields are also the ones to which J. F. Myers has so admirably contributed in the past.
