A series of strips of a Ni-12.7 at. pct A1 alloy were Prepared containing cubical y'(NisAl) precipitates with edge lengths from 60 to 500A. A particle-free solution-tveated strip was included for cornparison. They weve cold-rolled 95 pct and the effects of particle size on the isochronal (1/2 hr) annealing behavior between 300° and 950°C studied (by hardness and light and electron microscopy). It ulas inferred that the particles deformed with the lnatvix becoming lamellae which remained coherent. Comparison with published data fov pure nickel showed that aluminum greatly re-tavded softening and recrystallization, but it made little difference whether or not particles were present. The presence of pakticles led to a heterogeneous distribution of precipitates after annealing at 700" to 750°C. Recovery was not detected. Recrystallization occurred by the growth of new grains into unrecrys-tallized material. In a previous study by the author,' the growth of Ll2-type ordered yl(Ni3Al) precipitates was followed in Ni-12.7 at. pct A1 alloy as a function of aging at 600" and 700°C. The particles were showo to be cubical in shape in all sizes from 50 to 3000A and remained coherent. This work was used as a guide in preparing the starting structures for the present study of the effect of these particles on the annealing behavior of heavily cold-rolled strip. Another question of present interest was whether dislocation and particle hardening were additive, since the structures before rolling ranged from solution-treated to peak-aged to overaged. Also, precipitation might occur on annealing after cold-rolling. Reference may be made to other papers2"5 for previous work in this relatively unexplored field and only some recent work will be mentioned her:. phillips2 studied the effect of deformable 0 to 590A-diam cobalt particles on a Cu-3.23 pct Co alloy rolled 95 pct and found that the particles, which rolled out into thin lamellae, impeded softening and recrystallization. Tanner and servi3 likewise studied the annealing of cold-swaged Cu-2 pct Co alloy containing 150A-diam particles and found impeding effects. Haessner et a1.,4 on the other hand, found that incoherent 2-p-diam non-deformable particles of B4C (0.04 vol pct) tended to increase the rate of recrystallization of copper rolled up to 95 pct reduction. They attributed this to the formation of new grains at the particle interfaces. Humphreys and artin' found that nondeformable silica particles in copper rolled to 30 pct reduction accelerated recrystallization if the particle spacing was large and retarded it if the spacing was smaller. Haessner et a1 4 also studied a rolled Ni-Cr-A1 alloy; however, the particles of y'(Ni3Al)-type precipitate were not put in before rolling, but separated during the isothermal annealing at 750°C. No previous work appears to have been carried out on the effect of y' (Ni3A1) particles on the annealing of Ni-A1 alloy. Hornbogen and ICreye7 redetermined the solubility c of aluminum in nickel as a function of temperature T and showed that it was given by c = 32.6 exp(-1940/RT). This relation gives aluminum solubilities of 15.1, 14.2, 12.0, and 10.7 at. pct at 1000°, 900°, 700°, and 600°C, respectively. The phase precipitated from the nickel-rich solid solution is fcc y1 (Ni3A1) which has a Cu3Au -type ordered structure8 and remains ordered up to 1000°C.B EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloy used was identical with that used before. Chemical analysis showed 6.27 wt pct (12.71 at. pct) Al, the principle impurities being 0.065 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Co, 0.020 pct Cu, and 0.004 pct C. Bar stock of 1 in. diam was cold-swaged to % in. diam, cold-rolled to 0.300-in.-thick strip, and annealed at 900°C in dry hydrogen. It was cold-rolled to 0.100-in. thickness and solution-treated for 1 hr at 1000°C while sealed in a quartz tube in argon, quenching in iced brine with the aid of a device to snap off the nose of the tube. Lineal analysis gave an average grain size of 0.055 mm. Pieces of strip were aged at 700°C in vacuo for 30 min, 51/4 hr, and 1 week to produce nominal average particle widths of 60, 150, and 500A, respectively, as known from the previous work.' The average diamond pyramid hardness was determined. The heat-treated strips were rolled from 0.100 to 0.005 in., a reduction of 95 pct, and the rolled strips stored at about -5°C. Small pieces were annealed within 1 week for 30 min at temperatures from 300° to 950° ±2°C in a horizontal vacuum furnace. Strips were withdrawn into a cooling zone, giving an estimated initial cooling rate from 950°C of about 50°C per sec. Average diamond pyramid hardnesses were determined on a lightly electropolished spot on the surface of each strip using 300-g load. Each point on the softening curves represents a separate annealed specimen. Sections containing the rolling direction were examined by optical metallography. Selected specimens were electrothinned to the center plane' and examined by transmission at 100 kv in a Siemens Elmiskop I electron microscope. It is well-known that changes in the structure tend to occur when a deformed strip is electrothinned below a thickness of a few hundred angstroms, although this is less serious with a material such as nickel which has a high melting point, and also is apt to be less serious when particles are present. Observations were nevertheless confined to thicker regions of the foils with estimated thicknesses over 1000A. No changes were observed due to beam exposure.

In the fall of 1912, the appearance of water in the oil of the Nevada Petroleum Co., Coalinga, Cal., made necessary the installation of a dehydrating plant to reduce the water below the 3 per cent. limit prescribed by the agency. Unlike the mining industry, technical literature of the oil industry is limited and extremely unsatisfactory. Until the recent efforts of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, no concerted movement has been instituted to secure publication of papers dealing with the problems of the oil business, and because of the additional fact that dehydrating of oil has not been practiced in California to any extent up to comparatively recent time, it was found necessary to experiment in order to determine the most satisfactory plan for this purpose. It is easy to write regarding successful enterprises, but, while not SO pleasant, it is equally desirable to write of failures so that others may be saved the loss incident to such investments. The water in this oil occurs both free and as an emulsion. Free water easily settles out, but the emulsion requires treatment. So far as can be determined, the emulsion consists of globules of water surrounded and enveloped by a film of oil. Starting with this hypothesis the theory has been evolved that in order to break up this emulsion the water must be heated at least to boiling point, when an explosion takes place destroying the globule. Unfortunately, this condition was not recognized in the installation of the first plant, which was planned on the following lines: A heater was arranged so that all the oil from the wells could be heated before reaching the shipping tanks, these being already fitted with coils for steam heating. Tanks were filled with about 4 ft. of water, live steam was turned into the coils and the water brought nearly to the boiling point, when the heated oil was run in. This for a time was partly successful, but the length of time necessary to apply this heat was too great for practical operating.

Differential flotation of bulk sulfide concentrates from Duluth gabbro into copper and nickel concentrates could be implemented by first destroying the hydrophobic coating with ozone and then by recovering the copper concentrate with a copper-selective collector. A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone, such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

This chapter deals with those sands employed by foundries for the manufacture of cores and molds used in the casting of such common metals as steel, gray iron, ductile iron, aluminum-based alloys, and copper-based alloys. Most metal is cast in "green sand" molds in which the sand mixture, consisting primarily of silica, clay, and water, forms a plastic material. This plastic material is rammed around a pattern in a split box called a flask, then the box is separated, the pattern is withdrawn, and the metal is poured. These green sand molds are broken apart when the metal has solidified. The sand is then remixed and a new mold made for the next casting. To a lesser extent silica sand is mixed with resins or oils and, after forming, the mixture is hardened by either heat or chemical reaction. In any case, the foundry mold or core is used just once before being broken up and remixed for manufacturing another core or mold. By far the greatest consumption in the foundry is of those types of sand high in silica, low in clay (under 0.5%), and occurring in numerous locations thoughout the United States. Consumption End Uses Foundry sands fall into four distinct categories: silica sand, lake sand, bank sand, and natural molding sand. Silica sand is a general term used to describe washed, graded, dried, and cooled clay-free sands which are found in many parts of the United States. They generally contain 90 to 100% silica but vary greatly in chemical analysis and grain structure. Lake sand is the sand dredged from Lake Michigan or dug from the dunes bordering that lake. Bank sand is composed primarily of silica grain but containing up to 5% clay. It is shipped in both the damp and dry state but the normal processing of bank sand consists only of drying and scalping. Occasionally two different grades of bank sand are blended prior to or during loading. Natural molding sand is a term used to describe a sand containing sufficient clay as mined to be suitable for molding purposes. Clay content may vary from 10 to 24% with the balance of the material consisting primarily of silica sand. These sands range in fineness from one peaked on the 20 mesh to one which contains more than 50% of the particles passing the 270 mesh. Lake sands are relatively coarse and are used in great quantities for the production of automotive castings. Bank sands and natural molding sands are gradually phasing out as the production of castings becomes more a science and less an art. The vast majority of foundry sands used today are those known as the silica sands and lake sands. Foundry sands are used in two basic ways. The majority are used in the green or uncured state with the balance used in the cured or set state. Green sand is grain bonded with clay and contains varying amounts of water to plasticize the clay in order to bond the grains together. Green sand is either naturally bonded or "synthetic" sand. The naturally bonded molding sands are generally found in the Hudson River Valley of New York State, Cumberland County in New Jersey, and in Tennessee and Mississippi. Synthetic sand is molding sand compounded in the individual foundry. It is made up primarily of graded silica sand, western or southern bentonite, water, and carbonaceous and/or cellulosic materials. Green sand is used primarily in making molds. The use of naturally bonded green sand has been declining for many years, primarily because naturally bonded sands are more difficult for the foundryman to find and control. A full scale field experiment on cathodic protection of casing answers questions concerning (1) the proper criteria for determining current requirments, (2) the amount of protection provided by different currents, and (3) the transfer of current at the base of the surface pipe. Three dry holes in the Trico pool in Rooks County, Kans., were selected for cathodic protection tests. The three holes were in an area where casing failures opposite the Dakota water sand often accur in less than a year. Examination of the electric togs showed the wells to be similar to other wells in the field where casing in four of seven producing wells has failed. The three holes were cleaned out and cased with 75 joints of new 51/2-in. 14-tb J-55. Each joint was visually inspected and marked before it as run. The casing was bull plugged and floated in the hole 50 that the inside might remain dry and free of excessive attack. Also, if a leak occurred, a pressure increase could be observed on gawge at the surface. Extensive testing was done, including potential profiles, log current-potentid curves and electrode measurements from both surface and downhole connections. Based on these data, a current of 12 amps was applied to one well and 4 amps to mother. The third well was left to corrode. During the two-year period when the casing was in the ground, [he applied current was checked weekly, and reference electrode measurements were made about every two months. Three sets of casing potential profi1e.c were run. When the three strings were pulled, each joint was examined for type of scale formed, presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria, extent of corrosion nttnck and pit depth. Since the pipe was new when run, quantitative determination of the protection provided by current was possible. This is the first concrete field evidence to help resolve the many arguments about the proper method for selecting adequate current for cathodic protection of oilwell (-using. INTRODUCTION A casing string is run when a well is drilled. This pipe is supposed to protect this valuable "hole in the ground" for the life of the well. Often the casing does not last the life of the well; it is with these casing failures that this work is concerned. The cost of repairing a casing failure varies from field to field—from as much as a $30,000 per leak average in California to $5,000 per leak in Kansas. Additional costs other than actual repairs are also important. These include formation damage, lost production, etc. Casing damage caused by internal corrosion is important in some areas. Treatment normally consists of flushing inhibitor down the annulus, but further research is being done on control measures. The test described in this paper is concerned only with external corrosion. The problem of casing failure from external attack has appeared in several areas including western Kansas, California, Montana, Wyoming, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi. Cathodic protection is currently being used in an attempt to control external corrosion. From reports in the NACE there are thousands of wells currently under cathodic protection. The quantity of current being applied ranges from 27 amps on some deep California wells to a few tenths of an amp being supplied from magnesium anodes on wells in Texas and Kansas. Considerable field and laboratory effort1,9,5,6 was exented on the problem of cathodic prctection of casing, and it became fairly obvious that this method could be used to protect wells. Early workers showed that current applied to a well distributed itself over the length of the casing and was not concentrated on the upper few hundred feet. Basic cathodic protection theory had shown that corrosion attack could be stopped by applying sufficient current. The problem resolved itself, then, into one of trying to decide just how much current was necessary. Various criteria were utilized in installing the many existing cathodic protection installations. These methods included the following. 1. Applying sufficient current to remove the anodic slope as shown by the potential profile." 7. Applying enough current to maintain all areas of the casing at a pipe-to-soil potential of .85 v.' 3. Applying the current indicated by a log current-potential (or E log I) curve." 4. Supplying the current necessary to shift the pipe to-soil potential .3 v." 5. Applying 2 or 3 milliamps of current per sq ft of casing."

The Combined Metals Reduction Co.'s plant is at Bauer, Utah. It was built primarily to treat ore from the Combined Metals mine at Pioche, Nevada. Shortly after its completion, the company acquired the old Honerine mine, and ores from this mine, as well as custom ores from widely scattered districts, are now being treated at the Bauer plant. Pioche Ore The Pioche ore, which comprises about 50 per cent. of the mill feed, occurs as a replacement of an impure thin-bedded limestone. The lime beddings are separated by thin layers of micaceous shale containing appreciable quantities of sericitc and graphite. The ore is an exeeptionally fine-grained, dense mixture of minerals and gangue, assaying approximately 0.03 oz. gold, 7.2 oz. silver, 7 per cent. lead, 15 per cent. zinc, 16 per cent. iron, 29 per cent. insoluble and 1.5 per cent,. lime. Of the total lead 7 per cent. is in the form of sulfate and carbonate. Approximately 10 per cent,. of the ore consists of chert nodules impregnated with barren pyrite; the nodules average 0.8 mm. in size, and ire extrcmely hard, compared with the other constituents of the ore. Microscopic examination of Pioche ore ground to 80 per cent . minus 150 nicsh shows pyrite, sphalerite and galena still attached. Early Attempts at Ore Dressing Metallurgists, both professional and those working for private companies, have been more or less familiar with the Pioche ore sinee. 1913; in fact, a total of 35 commercial and plant laboratories expenmented with the ore between 1913 and 1921. The work during this period was decidedly negative, it being seemingly impossible to effeet a satisfactory separation of the valuable minerals into marketable products. In 1913, it was recognized that fine grinding-—that is, about minus. : 200 mesh—-was required to liberate the minerals from one another, and from the gangue, but such fine grinding was not considertd practicable at this time.

IT Is commonly recognized that a given material may be described as ductile or brittle only with reference to the conditions of test. Thus under the usual test conditions quartz is brittle, but under high pressures it is ductile. Salts that are brittle at room temperature become ductile at elevated temperatures. Pitch, brittle with respect o rapid loads, flows at low rates of loading. Pearlitic steel, ductile under the usual conditions of test, may be embrittled under the proper conditions of combined stresses, temperature, and rate of loading. EARLIER INVESTIGATIONS A clear analysis of the conditions necessary for plastic flow and for fracture was first given by Ludwik,1 who introduced two types of stress, the "flow stress" and the "stress at fracture." These stresses may refer to tensile or to shear stresses, or, in fact, to any type of stress. Ludwik considered these two stresses to be independent of one another, functions of the conditions of test and of the prior history of the material. For the purpose of analysis, both a flow stress and a stress at fracture can be envisaged as functions of strain over the entire range from zero to infinite strain. Thus, the material is brittle if the stress at fracture is less than the flow stress and ductile if the reverse is true. According to Ludwik's analysis, the problem of determining the effects of combined stresses, of temperature and of strain rate upon the behavior of metals reduces to a problem of determining the effect of these variables upon the flow stress and upon the stress at fracture. In the present paper, methods are described for determining the effects of two of these variables, temperature and strain rate, and examples are given of the dependence or now stress and stress at fracture, upon these two variables. The effect of combined stresses will be discussed in a succeeding paper. The flow stress may be determined from a load-diameter curve. Load-diameter curves were obtained over a wide range of temperature and over the limited range of strain rates obtainable with the lever-type Riehle machine used. The. curves were then converted to an extremely wide range of strain rate by making use of the equivalence of the effects of changes in strain rate and changes in temperature, previously proposed2 and demonstrated' by the authors. According to this principle of equivalence, strain rate E and temperature T affect the flow stress only through a single parameter p of the form: p = EeQ/RT [I] In this equation, R is the gas constant (2 cal. per gram mol per deg. C.), and Q is a heat of activation, which varies from material to material, and may depend upon the strain, but not upon the strain rate or the temperature. There is associated with every value of p a flow-stress curve. Combinations of strain rate and of temperature that give the same p have the same flow-stress curve. An increased drilling activity was apparent in the shallow sand fields of northwestern Pennsylvania during the year. This drilling, however, was confined to previously outlined productive areas and as new shallow sand pools of interest were discovered. Drilling for Oriskany gas proceeded at about the same rate as in previous years. One new area in Kinzua township, Warren County, was opened up during the year by a producing well, but later this well developed salt water and the productive capacities of the area are very indefinite at the present time. Production from the shallow sand areas remained approximately the same as in 1935. Production from the Oriskany or deep sand areas increased approximately 20 per cent. Two new markets were made available for the Oriskany gas during the closing months of the year by the completion of the Peoples Natural Gas Co. line from the Hebron field to Clarion County, Pa. and Penn York Gas Co. line from the Harrison field to points in northwestern New York State. With the exception of the Kinzua well, the few deep wildcat wells drilled during the year failed to discover new fields in the deep sands. Bradford Oil Field The accompanying data on the Bradford oil field include only the production obtained from the portion of that field that is in the State of Pennsylvania, for it appears probable that Cattaraugus County production, which consists mainly of the New York State portion of the Bradford field, will be included in annual oil production figures for New York State. The Bradford field production for 1936 totaled 14,533,000 bbl., and as it is necessary to estimate New York State production for the Bradford field, the accompanying data includes the production from the Pennsylvania end of the Bradford field of 13,208,000 bbl., which is an increase of approximately 8 per cent over 1935 production.

The activity of sulfur was determined as a function of composition of ferrous sulfide by equilibrating with hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures at 670° , 800°, and 900". The present results supplement the available data over the composition range from 36.6 to 39.5 pct S. The X-ray lattice spacing measurements made are in accord with the available data and indicate that the limiting composition FeSl.008 may be taken for the iron-iron sulfide equilibrium. The growth rate of ferrous sulfide on iron was measured by reacting iron strips or blocks in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. Owing to the slow approach to equilibrium between the gas phase and the surface of the sulfide layer, The sulfidation experiments were carried out for several days. It is shown that the growth rate ullimately proceeds in accordance wilh the parabolic rate law. From the parabolic rate constants and the thermodynamic data on iron sulfide the self-difiusivity and chemical diffusivity of iron in ferrous bisulfide are evalualed. The self-diffusivity of iron thus derived zs found to increase with increasing sulfur content. THE ferrous sulfide known as "pyrrhotite" is a non-stoichiometric phase having a wide composition range from about 50 to about 58 or 60 at. pct, depending on the sulfur activity. RosenQvistl studied the thermodynamics of this phase over wide ranges of temperature and composition. Hauffe and Rahmel' and Meussner and ~irchenall~ studied the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron in sulfur vapor. By using markers, these investigators showed that the iron cations were the predominant diffusing species in iron sulfide. This is confirmed decisively by the self-diffusivity measurements of condit4 who showed that the self-diffusivity of sulfur in ferrous sulfide is several orders of magnitude lower than the self-diffusivity of iron. Although much has been learned from these studies about the Fe-S system, further research on this subject was considered desirable for better understanding of the physical chemistry of iron sulfide. This work was confined to the study of the kinetics of sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. The results of this study are given in two consecutive parts. Part I, the present paper, is on the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron and the diffusivity of iron in ferrous sulfide. The second paper, Part 11, is on the kinetics of the surface reaction between hydrogen sulfide and ferrous sulfide. ISD sulfur potential; ii) X-ray studies of ferrous sulfide; and iii) measurements of the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron. Equilibrium Studies. About 1 g of iron powder or foil. contained in a small recrystallized alumina crucible ind suspended from a calibrated silica spring, was reacted with a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known ratio until no further change in weight was observed. %hen the gas composition was changed and the new state of equilibrium was established after several hours of reaction time. The composition of the sulfide was obtained from the initial weight of the sample and the weight after equilibration. X-Ray Studies. The lattice parameters of some of the equilibrated samples were determined using the General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer with a cobalt tube (no filter) set at 40 kv apd 10 ma; the CoK, radiation was taken as 1.79020A. Observed 220 and 311 diffraction peaks of silicon served as an internal comparison standard to correct for possible misalignment of the goniometer. The lattice parameters of the sulfide phase were calculated from the corrected Bragg angles of the 110 and 102 peaks. Rate Studies. In the initial experiments attempts were made to measure the parabolic rate of sulfidation by measuring the gain in weight of a thin iron strip, -0.05 cm thick, suspended from a silica spring in the reacting atmosphere. The preliminary experiments showed that this technique was not reliable for the measurement of the parabolic growth rate of the iron sulfide layer. In the subsequent experiments the data on growth rate were obtained by measuring, on a microscope stage, change in the thickness of the sample after reaction for a specified time in a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known sulfur activity. For each reaction time a new sample was used. Precision-machined iron blocks, 0.5 by 2 by 5 cu cm, were de-greased and annealed in hydrogen for several hours prior to the sulfidation rate measurements. The experiments were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900°C in gas mixtures having the ratios, and 1.0 for periods of times from a few hours up to 8 days. Apparatus and Materials. A vertical globar tube furnace with a 3-in.-long uniform temperature zone was used. The glass tube fittings were fused on the zircon reaction tube, 1.5 in. diam. The temperature was measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple placed in the hot zone of the furnace inside the reaction tube (an alumina thermocouple sheath was used). A separate thermocouple was used for the temperature controller which maintained the furnace temperature constant within about 2°C. Anhydrous liquid hydrogen sulfide and oxygen-free dry hydrogen from gas tanks were used in preparing the gas mixtures by the constant head capillary flow-meters. In all cases volume flow rate was 1000 cu cm per min at stp, corresponding to a linear velocity of about 6 cm per sec at 800°C; under these conditions

Pennsylvania's existing large coal-fired units are limited to 2.0, 1.8, or 0.6 lb of sulfur per million Btu fired, depending on site location. Multi-stream coal preparation can be employed on system basis to extract the highest quality fraction of coal for use in units requiring the lowest sulfur. The middling fraction can be directed to units permitted higher sulfur. General Public Utilities Corp. has concluded that it is feasible to advance the state-of-the-art of heavy media coal preparation to produce an intensively cleaned primary product of 1.3 sp gr of less than 0.6 lb of sulfur per million Btu for the new unit and a middling product of 2.0 lb of sulfur per million Btu for existing units.

The term lineage was first introduced by Buergerl to denote dendritic branches, grown from a crystal nucleus during solidification from the liquid, with imper- fections in alignment of the order of 10 : to 10-4 cm. These imperfections are associated with distortions of the dendrites caused by the subsequent solidification of the inter-dendritic filling and are illustrated in Fig I. Buerger etched zinc single crystals made by the Bridgman3 method to develop this dendritic pattern and show lineage microscopically. Since maximum crystal growth in face-centered cubic metals occurs along the [IT] directions,2 lineage would appear in copper as small deviations of dendritic branches from these directions. Elam4 and others5"8 reported etching effects resulting from coring along the cube face traces of various copper alloy crystals. These traces were used by Samans8 to orient single crystals. Williamson9 noted a "lined structure (in alpha brass single crystals) consisting of an ordered arrangement of etch pits" which were probably traces of {IOO} planes but somewhat uncertain because they were never straight (that is, apparently lineage). Greningerl1 described the distortion and multiplicity of Laue spots in back reflection X ray photograms of copper single crystals showing lineage. The present investigation -includes metal-lographic, X ray, and property studies of lineage in large grain and single crystal specimens of copper. Preparation of Specimens specilnens 10 in. long 35 1/2 in. diam of oxygen-free copper (o.F.H.c.) (99.985 pet) were' melted vertically in graphite crucibles under an atmosphere of commercial nitrogen purified through a gas train including sulfuric acid, potassium chloride, magnesium chiorate, hot copper chips and phosphorus pentoxide. After a temperature of 1200°C had been maintained for 1/2 hr, the furnace was turned off and the specimens cooled at a rate of about 150°c an hour' This method of direct solidification was used by Greningerlo to produce single crystals with marked lineage and in this investigation produced a fair yield of single crystal specimens in

Not long ago I was called upon to conduct some experiments on the treatment of ores from the New Cornelia copper mine, Ajo mountains, Arizona, for the Calumet & Arizona Copper Co. The problem was a very interesting one and contained some unusual features. Incidental with this problem was the utilization of a large amount of low-grade pyrite in the Bisbee mines of the company, provided this could be accomplished by any feasible method. The New Cornelia mine is situated 45 miles south of Gila Bend, the nearest railroad point, on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is about 160 miles, almost due west, from Tucson. This section is one of the most arid in the United States. The normal annual precipitation, as given by the United States Weather Bureau covering a period from 1870 to 1901, is 3 to 5 in. During June and July, 1913, the records kept by the company gave the following results. These are all I have available, but they show the enormous evaporation that can be expected, which may be a factor in leaching operations on a large scale. Temperature, Degrees F. None 10.00 Aside from several springs about 10 miles from the property, the nearest known water in quantity at the time these experiments were made was the Gila river at Gila Bend, 45 miles distant. Part of the developinent of the property of course included drilling for water in the valley, which was in progress at the conclusion of my experiments. The ore deposit itself is unusual. It consists of of intrusive plug of monzonite or granite porphyry. Chalcopyrite, bornite, and magnetite are finely disseminated throughout the magma in sufficient quantities to make the greater part of the mass commercial ore to a certain depth.

WHEN one solid phase is generated from another, fixed and rational orientation relationships are observed to subsist between the parent and the new crystal. The principle has been proposed' that the relationships obtaining between the same two phases are identical whatever the type of phase change involved, or whichever of the phases may act as parent. Many types of phase changes have been studied: allotropic transformations in pure metals, precipitation from solid solutions, eutectoid decompositions, peritectic reactions, the formation of oxide layers, and others.2 Phase layers generated by diffusion of one metal into another constitute an additional type of reaction. This report provides new data on the orientation relationships occurring between , phase layers formed by diffusion, in the Cu-Zn system, § and furnishes further evidence in support of the principle. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Cu-Zn system is especially suitable for these studies since the high vapor pressure of Zn provides an opportunity readily to create one phase poorer in Zn upon a parent phase richer in Zn by removing Zn by vaporization, or to reverse this process by adding Zn from Zn vapor; e.g., the beta phase can be found as a layer upon gamma by dezincing, or gamma can be found on beta by addition of Zn from Zn vapor. Since orientation relationships are to be sought, requiring crystals large enough for orientation determinations, it is convenient to prepare single crystals or large grains of the parent phase. The samples were prepared from oxygen-free high-conductivity copper and Horse Head zinc by melting under a borax flux in a graphite crucible. Large crystals of beta brass were grown by the strain-anneal method, in plates sectioned from the cast ingots, by the following procedure. Rockwell-hardness indents were made at I cm. intervals-and with various loads, then the plates were annealed for .4 days at 700°C. in Nichrome boxes packed with beta-brass chips and graphite. Surface layers were removed by grinding and etching to a depth of about 1.0 mm., and individual grains were cut out. Crystals of alpha and gamma brass were prepared by freezing, by lowering a graphite crucible at speeds less than one inch per hour through a furnace held at a constant temperature above the melting point. Single crystals were cut out with a jeweler's saw, ground, polished and etched. Care was taken to remove cold worked layers from the finished crystals

The behavior of nonsulfide gangue in chalcopyrite flotation circuits has been investigated. Plant and laboratory tests were conducted on five different ores. Linear relationships between the recovery rates of free nonsulfide gangue and water were observed. From pilot plant tests, there was evidence that the linear relationship was actually a linear approximation to a parabolic relationship. There was evidence that free nonsulfide gangue is transported from the pulp to the froth in the water and that the gangue is subjected to hydraulic classification in the froth column. A classification matrix has been proposed to define this behavior. This matrix is suitable for inclusion in a mathematical model of the process.
