Chlorination of the various constituents of ilmenite by different chlorinating agents in presence of various reducing agents, have been considered on the basis of the standard free energy and standard enthalpy changes as a function of temperature. The standard free energy change considerations show that it is beneficial to chlorinate ilmenite by chlorine in the presence of carbon and also that iron constituent of ilmenite can be preferentially chlorinated by clzlorine, titanium tetrachloride or their mixture. These findilzgs have been corroborated from the published work. METALLURGICAL processes involving the use of titanium tetrachloride have gained in importance because of the use of the latter in the manufacture of titanium metal. Since ilmenite is more abundant in nature than any other titanium mineral, the future of the metallurgical processes depends on the utilization of ilmenite for the production of titanium tetrachloride. In these laboratories, investigations have been carried out on the chlorination of ilmenite under a variety of conditions.1'2 During these studies, it was noticed that 1) preferential chlorination of iron was effected at low temperatures (400° to 600°C) and at low carbon content (6 to 7 pct), 2) carbonyl chloride retarded the chlorination of iron oxides and titania perceptibly, while 3) carbon-tetrachloride, compounds of sulphur and some other catalysts favored the chlorination. Moles3 has found that oxides of iron are chlorinated in preference to titania at high temperatures, while wilcox4 has claimed the preferential chlorination of titania between 1200" and 1500°C. It has been shown in this paper that preferential chlorination of titania claimed by Wilcox is not likely to occur. Daubenspeck and coworkers5,6 have claimed the preferential chlorination of iron by chlorine or by a mixture of titanium tetrachloride and chlorine between 700° and 1050°C in the absence of carbon. Even when plain titanium tetrachloride is employed as the chlorinating agent, pascaud7 noticed the preferential chlorination of iron and other oxides. The purpose of this paper is to explain from thermodynamical considerations, the various chlorination reactions studied so far. ILMENITE CONSTITUENTS AND THEIR CHLORINATION PRODUCTS Although the general composition of the ilmenite mineral is represented as FeTiO,, most of the ilmenites found in nature have variable quantities of TiO2 (44.6 to 64 pct), FeO (4.7 to 36 pct) and Fe2O3 (6.9 to 28 pct).8 The higher content of ferric iron in ilmenites was attributed by Millerg to the presence of arizonite (Fe2O3.3TiO2). But the X-ray studies by Overholt, Vaw, and odd" have shown that arizonite is a mixture of haematite, ilmenite, anatase, and rutile. Except for the anatase, similar views have been advanced by Lynd, Sigurdson, North, and Anderson8 from magnetic, X-ray, and optical and electron microscope studies. The ilmenite ores can, therefore, be assumed to consist of mineral aggregates of ilmenite, rutile and haematite. From the free energy of formation of ilmenite (FeTiO3), it has been shown by Kelley, Todd, and King11 that ilmenite is stable even up to its melting point (1367°C) and would not undergo decomposition into its constituent oxides. Schomate, Naylor, and Boericke12 have found that in the presence of a reducing agent the iron constituent of ilmenite is selectively reduced. The reaction of chlorine with ilmenite in presence of a reducing agent can, therefore, be synonymous with that of the reaction of chlorine with the constituents of ilmenite, viz., TiO2, FeO, and Fe2O3. Most of the reaction products of chlorination of ilmenite in the presence of reducing agents will be in equilibrium with their dissociation products, depending on the temperature. The titanium tetrachloride is, however, quite stable up to 1500°C due to its covalent nature. The equilibrium for the ferric chloride system has been investigated by Kangro and Bernstorff, 13, schafer14 and Kangro and petersen,15 and the results are summarized in Fig. 1, curves a, b, and c respectively. From these results, it is clear that the ferric chloride disociates as follows: 324° to 700°C FeaCl6(g) ?2FeCl2(c) + Cl2(g) [1] 324°to 900°C Fe2Cl6(g) =2 Fe Cl2 Reaction [I] (curve a) occurs in the forward direction to about 6 pct at 400°C but falls off very rapidly with increase in temperature and beyond 600°C, it is practically negligible, perhaps due to the formation of the stable monomer, FeC13(g). THROUGHOUT northeastern Texas we have an extensive series of iron-ore deposits, occupying portions of nineteen counties and having approximately an actual ore-covered area of 1000 square miles. The existence of these ores has long been known. Kennedy* says: "Iron-ore is distributed in profusion throughout Texas, being found almost everywhere except in the level region of the coast." Before this, C. Newell† had mentioned the existence of these ores thus: " Iron is found in abundance in the eastern, northern and middle portions of Texas;" and in 1849 Edward Smith‡ said: " We met with immense hills of iron which were said to be, and appeared to be, of excellent quality, in Cass and Titus counties.. . .. It is well known that Texas abounds with iron of first-rate quality." In 1859, Dr. Shumard? reports that detailed surveys had been made in several counties, and says: " Our labors have demonstrated the important fact that we have a vast iron-region in the eastern part of the state, embracing considerable areas in Cass, Harrison, Rusk, Panola, Smith, San Augustine and Shelby counties. The ore-deposits belong to the Tertiary era and consist chiefly of hematites and limonites, of which there are several varieties. We have also found in this district extensive beds of carbonate of iron." Dr. Shumard gives no very exaggerated description of Cass county§ as it then existed when he says : " Cass county alone is capable of supplying a number of furnaces with an abundance of excellent iron-ore for many years." For the year 1943, exploratory drilling in South Central Texas continued on the sharp decline that started during 1942. Of the 3 counties comprising this district, as now revised to include the same area as is covered by District No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas, I5 counties are producing oil or gas. Only 29 exploratory wells were drilled during 1943, as compared with 51 exploratory wells in 1942, or a decrease of over 40 per cent. One new oil field and one new gas field were discovered during the year and a new horizon was discovered in an existing oil field. This cornpares with two new oil fields and an extension to an existing gas field in 1942. The one new oil field, South Washburn, in southeastern La Salle County, was discovered by Quintana Petroleum Corporation's No. I-D South Texas indicate in April 1943, flowing 4 bbl. per day, 48" A.P.I. gravity oil with an estimated 4 million cubic feet of gas from Wilcox sand at 6030 ft. This well i's the result of an extensive seismograph survey of the area. It is about 434 miles southwest of the same company's Green Branch field and by the end of the year one dry hole had been drilled to the southwest of this discovery. The one new gas field, which was not named, was located in eastern McMullen County by Edwin M. Jones' No. 102 Ezzell, in November 1943, for an estimated 8 million cubic feet of gas from shallow Jackson sand at 1222 ft. NO addi- tional wells have been drilled in this area, which may also be considered as an extension to the South Calliham field. The one new producing horizon was discovered in the South Campana field in southeastern McMullen County, by Argo Oil Corporation's No. 2-G Edrington, in January 1943, flowing 55 bbl. per day, 21' A.P.I. gravity oil with 40 per cent water from Government wells sand at 2609 feet. None of these discoveries were of major importance and subsequent development in these new areas has proved to be disappointing. Produc'tion for the district during 1943 totaled approximately 6,985,000 bbl. from about 3430 producing wells. This is an increase in production of about 5 per cent over 1942, but a decrease in producing wells of about 10 per cent under the number of wells producing in 1942 for the same district. Average production per well was 5.4 bbl. during 1943 as against 4.8 bbl. during 1942. Approximately 5,320,000 hhl. of this total production, or 76 per cent, was produced by the four Edwards lime fields, Luling, Branyon, Salt Flat, and Darst Creek, which are from 22 to 14 years old. The remaining production came from the 43 other active oil fields in the district. Drilling in the proven fields maintained approximately the same level as for 1942, with a total of 36 wells drilled. Of these operations, 21 were oil wells, one was a gas well and 14 were dry holes. This is a slightly better proportion of producers than for 1942. Washburn field had the greatest number of new producing wells drilled during the year, with a total of 10.

By measuring the hardness of metals at temperatures just above and just below their allotropic change point, it has been established that crystal structure has a real effect upon the strength of metals. The DPH of cobalt, iron, titanium, uranium, and zirconium have been measured at temperatures up to 1000°C. It was found that the body-centered-cubic crystal structure is always the softer structure when it is involved in an allotropic transformation. The close-packed and more complex structures are inherently harder, and may be expected, therefore, to be better base materials for high strength alloys. IT has been observed that for metals with nearly the same melting point (i.e., tin and lead, magnesium and aluminum) the metal with the more complex crystal structure has a higher tensile strength and hardness. It might be asked whether this effect is really caused by the difference in crystal structure; and, if so, just what is the contribution of crystal structure to the strength of these metals. A qualitative answer to these questions can be obtained by measuring the change in hardness produced by the change in structure in metals exhibiting allotropic forms. The evidence for changes in mechanical properties during allotropic transformations is rather meager. In 1909, Rosenhain and Humfrey' observed that "ß" iron showed much less deformation at the transformation temperature than a iron. By means of a torsion test, Lee found that iron bars were "critically plastic" at the a-7 transformation temperature. Sauerwald and Knehans have shown that the dynamic hardness of iron increases between 900" and 1000°C. In 1930, Albert Sauveur' presented data on the hardness, tensile strength, and torsional strength of pui-e iron up to 1000°C. He concluded, "At 900°C, the a iron transforms into y iron, and this is accompanied by increased strength and stiffness and decreased ductility." The same year, Schischokin" obtained data on the hardness of thallium at temperatures above and below its transformation temperature. His data are replotted on semilogarithmic coordinates as Fig. 1. The fact that his data fall on straight lines in this type of plot is believed to attest to the purity of his metal and the accuracy of his results. In 1941, Nadai and Manjoine" obtained tensile data on pure iron with an indicated increase in strength at about 900°C. These experiments make it quite evident that changes in mechanical properties occur when a metal transforms from one crystal structure to another; but, except for Schischokin's data on thallium, none of the measurements seem accurate enough to determine the relative magnitude of the mechanical property change. Materials The metals that have been examined for changes in hardness during transformation include l—as- deposited commercial electrolytic cobalt about 99.7 pct pure, 2—Armco ingot iron, 3—are-melted iodide titanium of a purity in excess of 99.8 pct, 4—uranium of a purity in excess of 99.5 pct, 5—are-melted iodide zirconium of a purity in excess of 99.8 pct, 6—annealed, 0.08 pct C, rimmed steel, and 7—commercially pure RC55 titanium. While the purity of the first five of these materials leaves something to be desired, it will be noted that the observed hardness discontinuities occurred at the accepted transformation temperatures. (These temperatures are indicated by vertical arrows in Figs. 1 and 3 through 7.) The last two materials are commercial alloys introduced to show the effect of minor alloying elements upon the hot hardness curve. Current mineral industry trends toward handling the high tonnages of lower grade ore and tailings retreat lead to a continuing need for large volume flotation cells. The benefits which accompany the larger cell flotation circuit include reduced capital cost, less mill floor space, reduced operational complexity, and less maintenance, provided the metallurgical performance and solids suspension capability of the cell are not compromised. This study reviews development considerations pertinent to large mechanical air induction type flotation cells from the standpoint of cell internal hydrodynamic characteristics and metallurgical performance. While the importance of process related factors such as chemical usage, pH control, solids size and loading, and circuit arrangement cannot be denied, this study will emphasize the relationship of cell size (volume), mechanism geometry (impeller diameter), and mechanism operating conditions (rotor speed and submergence), to air transfer, liquid circulation, liquid "rise velocity" and mechanism power draw. Specific hydraulic performance maps for large capacity 300 and 500 cu ft flotation cells will be reviewed in terms of the relationship between the operational variables and the air and liquid flow conditions within the cell. Metallurgical results, obtained under plant operating conditions for 300 and 500 cu ft cells, are included to illustrate the metallurgical performance similarity of flotation cells which follow hydrodynamic scale-up criteria set forth in this investigation.

A dozen years or so ago, the general superintendent of our company, now the president, Mr. W. H. Clingerman, asked me to study the coal-washing problem. This work brought me into contact with the best washery men of the country. I investigated many kinds of coal-cleaning schemes, made numerous tests, and collected voluminous data, yet I confess frankly that I have had little practical washery experience and that little has been at the Middlefork washery of the United States Fuel Co. at Benton, Franklin Co., Ill., which was put in operation last fall. While this washery installation may not be the "last word," I am quite sure it embodies some long steps in advance of the older designs and constructions. From the washery man's standpoint, the removal of pyrites or marcasite, a disulfide of iron, is the one vital problem, and the one productive of the most beneficial results, so far as elimination of sulfur is concerned. Sulfates and so-called organic sulfur occupy quite a sec-. ondary position and are generally lost sight of in coal washing. The elimination of sulfur in coal in the past has usually been accomplished by jigging in water, but lately concentrating tables have been successfully employed. The flotation process has been applied to fine coal, but is hardly considered practicable. Coal washing is rapidly coming into its own, due to the depletion of low-sulfur coals for coking purposes, and we predict that soon the same careful attention will be given to the design and construction of coal washeries that is now being given to byproduct plants and other allied industries. Heretofore, coal washing has been considered only an incidental and necessary evil instead of the big problem it is—one worthy of the most careful study by men well trained along technical lines and capable of delving into the fundamental principles. Crystallization of ammonium paratungstate (APT) is frequently the last effective purification step in producing high-purity tungsten. However, crystallizer mother liquors are often several times higher in tungsten than predicted by the solubility of APT. The formation of heteropoly anions, particularly those containing phosphorus and silicon, is largely responsible. Solubility of tungsten in APT mother liquor can be linearly correlated with the concentration of these and other impurities. The problem can be overcome by direct treatment of the crystallizer feed solution with aluminum sulfate. By appropriate treatment, the aluminum hydroxide flocculates and is easily filtered, resulting in a purified low-aluminum crystallizer feed from which high APT yields can be attained.

After statement of the principles of similitude which apply to electromagnetic modeling, charts showing the inductive response of conducting spheres as dependent upon frequency, conductivity, and size are exhibited in this paper. The shape of the curve which relates intensity of response to frequency is significant in indicating the advisability of low frequencies in the exploration for conducting bodies, when consistent with the securing of a large percentage of the ideally possible response. Comparisons of theoretical response and that observed with models are shown, and relationships with the subject of applied electromagnetic prospecting are indicated. Maxwell Field Equations The Maxwell field equations summarize the physical laws that govern electrical field phenomena; they are the basis for the solution of electromagnetic problems. These concise equations, with adequately formulated boundary conditions, specify the complete electrical condition of continuous media, and the development of their solution amounts merely to a more convenient re-expression of phenomena already completely described. Thus, the immediate content of the field equations themselves is sufficient and sometimes convenient for the treating of certain questions (such as those relating to electromagnetic models) which are independent of the special factors of geometry, or the nature of an impressed field. This paper represents the results of a study to determine the source, mode of occurrence and conditions influencing the flow and liberation of large volumes of inflammable gas in the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia. A study of this kind is of interest in connection with mine ventilation, because in the removal of gases from coal mines it is very important to know the origin, the occurrence and laws of gas flow. The study was started in April, 1931, and the data and observations were obtained throughout a period of 15 months of field work. Geology The country where this study was made is mountainous and rugged; great cliffs, precipitous slopes and deep narrow gorges are found throughout the area. The outcropping rocks consist of stratified layers of sandstone, shale, limestone and deposits of coal of Carboniferous age. The Pottsville series of the Pennsylvanian, lying at the base of this period, cover the greater portion of the area. A stratigraphic section of the Pocahontas group of the Pottsville series is shown in Fig. 3. The older rocks outcrop in the extreme southeastern part of the area, but are under drainage in the central and northern parts due to the gradual northwest dip of the strata. The structure has a general northeast-southwest trend (Fig. 1). North of Dry Fork anticline the strata have been only slightly disturbed by movements of the earth's crust; it is now a long monocline. Southeast1 of Dry Fork anticline the strata are warped into great arches and deep troughs and are broken by overthrust faults. All of this folding is probably the result of the intense folding associated with the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. The nmgnetic susceptibility of heat-treatable aluminuin alloys is sensitive to chanyes such as solution or dissolution of solute and the precipitation of mew phases. By measuring the change in the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum alloys caused by various heat treatments, an empirical relation was found from which atomic arrangements in dilute binary alloys of copper, zinc, and magnesiutn in aluminum have been delineated. The relation predicts the ultimate formation of C1LA12 when copper is precipitated from solid solution in aluminum. Euidexce joy silovt- range order is found for copper in solid solution in aluminum in the sense that copper atoms avoid being nearest neighbors to an extent greater than would result from a purely random arrangertzeizt. Hume-Rothery has predicted such short-range order joy solid solution of copper in aluminum The Al-Zn system agrees with evidence obtained from X-ray scattering at small angles and predicts a tendency for zinc atoms to cluster in solid solution in aluminum. In the Al-mg system, the empirical relation indicates an approach to randor distribution of magnesium in solid solution in aluminum with a tendency for magnesium segvegation which increases with incveasing temperature. ThE magnetic properties of metals are complicated by the fact that contributions are made to them both by electrons of a "metallic" type which belong to the crystal as a whole, and by electrons in states localized on particular atoms. An expression1'2 for the bulk magnetic susceptibility of aluminum may be written as the sum of three contributions: where XA1 is the bulk susceptibility of aluminum per gram of material (in the cgs system, the units are those of reciprocal density); Xa1+3 is the diamagnetic contribution of the electrons localized in ion cores; Xa1 is. the paramagnetic spin contribution of conduction electrons often called Pauli paramag-netism: Xa1 is the diamagnetic contribution of the conduction electrons often called Landau diamag-netism. Ion core diamagnetism arises from the precession of the electron orbits which occurs when a magnetic field is applied to a system of electrons moving about a nucleus. Its contribution to the magnetic suscepti- bility is small, temperature-independent, and unaffected by alloying. The conduction electron diamagnetism is also temperature-independent and arises from the translatory motion of the electrons. For perfectly free electrons this contribution should be exactly one-third of the Pauli spin paramagnetism, but this relation is seldom even approximately true. Blythe2 determined the conduction electron diamagnetism in pure aluminum and found it to be extremely small. Any change in the conduction electron diamagnetism caused by alloying is neglected in this work. The Pauli paramagnetic contribution3 to the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum depends upon the number of electrons that occupy excited states and whose spins can be turned parallel to an applied magnetic field. The number of electrons free to turn in the field is proportional to the temperature and each spin contribution to the susceptibility is inversely proportional to the temperature. A slight temperature dependence of Pauli paramagnetism occurs when the number of electrons occupying excited states cannot increase sufficiently to balance the inverse dependence on temperature of each spin contribution. The decrease of the magnetic susceptibility of aluminum with increasing temperature is attributed to a temperature dependence of the Pauli paramagnetism. Estimates of the Pauli paramagnetism of aluminum have been made by several workers.2,4,5 All of the values are in reasonably good agreement with each other. In this work Xal at 17°C is taken as 0.761 X 10-8 cu cm per g. An expression similar to [I] can be written for the magnetic susceptibility of an aluminum base alloy containing a fractional weight percent x of solute:' Xa = (1 -x)XAl+3 +xXsoluteion * XaPauli +Xadia) [2] where X, is the magnetic susceptibility per gram of alloy, Xal'3and Xsolute ion are the ion core diamag-netic contributions, and xpauli and xdia are the Pauli and diamagnetic contributions of conduction electrons in the alloy. If the components of a mixture are not alloyed but simply mixed together in their pure states without producing a new phase, then the magnetic susceptibility of the mixture is given by the Wiedemann additivity law: Xm =x1X1 +x2x2 + ..xnxp [3] where X, is the susceptibility per gram of mixture and xnXp are the weight fractions and susceptibilities, respectively,-. for the pure components. The additivity law is not applicable to alloys because the outer electronic structures of the components are changed by alloying.' Both the Pauli paramagnetism and Landau diamagnetism are affected; hence the magnetic susceptibilitv of an alloy is usually different from that calculated using the additivity law. In this work the difference, X, -X,, is taken as a measure of the change caused by alloying.

Interest naturally attaches to fissuring and subsidence of the earth's surface, whatever the cause may be, and the induced movement and fissuring of the impervious strata overlying an oil sand is of even greater practical importance because of its bearing upon the recoverability of the portion of the oil not already extracted or extractable by ordinary production methods. It is probably true that significant ground movement induced by oil production occurs only in oil fields in relatively young formations, where the oil comes from incoherent or only slightly cemented sands and oil-soaked clays, but inasmuch as a great proportion of our "gusher" wells produce from "running" sands and yield a large part of the total oil output, it seems worth while to make an effort to inspire the collection and recording of data indicating the nature and magnitude of oil-field subsidence, both surface and subsurface. Goose Creek Field The single known instance in which the nature and magnitude of the surface subsidence incident to petroleum withdrawal has been accurately ascertained is that in the Goose Creek oil field of Texas, described by Pratt and Johnson.' There subsidence caused the submergence of a considerable area within the oil field, and, because the title to the naturally submerged lands of Texas rests in the State, it became necessary to determine whether the submergence was due to natural or artificial causes. A detailed study revealed that the sunken area conformed very closely to the limits of the productive oil field and that the cumulative depression over an eight-year period ranged from zero at the margin to 3.25 ft. at the center. Many recent contributions in the field of theoretical metallography have been concerned with crystallographic definitions or descriptions of various phenomena. The lattice orientation of the crystal being studied must be known before such definitions can be made. Practically all the metallic crystals used do not have crystal faces—other than the unknown "plane of polish"; hence resort must be had to other means of determining orientations. Some use has been made of etch-figures, slip bands, optical properties, etc., for this purpose; but for accurate results, and because of the fewer restrictions to their use, the various X-ray methods have been the most satisfactory.' The methods that have been used may be divided into two general classes: (1) oscillation methods, and (2) transmission Laue methods.² The disadvantages of these methods are numerous, chief among them being the time required to determine a complete orientation. No method proposed so far is wholly satisfactory for determining the orientation of a small macrograin within a polycrystalline aggregate.

The area for which oil and gas developments in South Texas are reported for 1940 in this paper covers the same counties that were included in the reports for 1938 and 1939, with the addition of LaSalle County. LaSalle County is includcd in the Laredo district of South Texas, which totals seven counties for that district. The Corpus Christi district remains the same, with nine counties. The two districts together comprise what is known as the South Texas area for this report. Continued exploration along established trends and beyond proven field limits during 1940 provided South Texas with new fields and new producing levels at a rate of discovery fairly comparable with the high records set during recent years. The wells drilled in the counties within this district (including LaSalle) numbered 1656, approximately 8 per cent below the 1801 figure of last year. However, rank wildcats totaIed 336, an increase of 17.5 per cent compared to the 286 drilled in 1939. Therefore, since new field discoveries numbered 25 in 1940 against 29 in 1939, the rate of new field discoveries in 1940, based upon rank wildcats drilled, was I/I3.4 while that of 1939 was I/9.86, which shows a decrease of about 25 per cent in the rate of new fields. The rank wildcat tests in 1940 gave the following results: 18 produced oil, 4 produced distillate with gas, 3 produced. only gas, and 3r1 were dry holes (Table 5). Of the 1320 tests drilled in already proven fields or as extensions to pro+en areas (representing a decline of 12.8 per cent from last year's total of 1515 tests), 1048 produced oil or distillate, 60 produced gas and 212 were dry holes (Table 4). Of the producers, 50 found new sands or crude-in-distillate-sands in existing fields. Among the several fields subjected to extensive development were: Colorado, Jim Hogg County; East White Point, San Patricio and Nueces County; Rincon and Sun, Starr County; Glen, Webb and Zapata Counties; Wade City and Orange Grove, Jim Wells County; Stratton and South Clara Driscoll, Nueces County, and Aransas Pass, San Patricio and Aransas Counties. The development of important crude reserves on structures formerly considered primarily distillate fields has probably been the most important phase of the year's operations in South Texas. The Rincon, Stratton, Agua Dulce, Wade City, Odem and Robston fields provided the new crude sand discoveries. At some places crude production was opened by exploratory wells that found new sand horizons; in others by flank wells that found already discovered distillate sands sufficiently low to provide crude production. Rincon, Starr County, with its multiple sands, is now believed to be one of South Texas' largest crude-oil reserves. Offshore drilling showed important results during the year, including the discovery of two new submerged fields and the extension of the East White Point field into offshore Nueces County. INTRODUCTION Mill production from the Homestake Mine in 1979 amounted to 1.29 Mt (1.43 million st) of ore containing 5.9 g/t of gold (0.172 oz per st) compared with 1978 production of 1.44 Mt (1.59 million st) containing 6.2 g/t of gold (0.180 oz per st). The average cost per ounce of gold produced in 1979 rose to approximately $250 contrasted with $176 in 1978. This increase in unit cost is the result of inflation, a diminishing ore grade, and productivity losses related to a shortage of experienced miners as well as compliance with federal regulatory requirements. Together, these factors prompted the investigation of several large-scale, highly mechanized underground mining methods. This analysis indicated Vertical Crater Retreat mining to be one of the safest underground methods known today, yet competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Therefore, the feasibility of applying the VCR stoping method at the Homestake Mine was explored. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping is a recent innovation in large- scale underground mining based on C. W. Livingston's crater blasting theories. Figure 1 illustrates the method which consists of drilling 165.1-mm-diameter (6.5-in.) holes from a topsill down-dip to an under- cut on the level below. The bottom of each hole is then loaded from above with a predetermined charge weight and horizontal slices up to 4.27 m (14 ft) in thickness are blasted into the undercut. Broken ore is extracted from drawpoints located on or below the undercut level.

TWO serious hazards from coal dust confront the bituminous-coal miner- -a physical or safety hazard and a physiological or health hazard. The first threatens the miner with loss of life from coal-dint explosions, and the second with loss of health and earning capacity from inhaling large quantities of the dust. Studies by the Bureau of Mines have shown that coal dust, except some grades of anthracite dust, is capable of initiating an explosion when no explosive gas is present and that its property of extending or propagating an explosion has been responsible for nearly all the widespread explosions that have occurred in bituminous mines in the United States in the present century. For years many mining people believed that low-volatile coal dust was not explosive but not only is it explosive but if the source of ignition is intense, it is as explosive as the dust of many high-volatile coals because the war is creating increased pressure for greater coal production and because of the trend toward greater mechanization in mines, explosion and health hazards from coal dust are likely !n increase considerably.
