The principle of sliding or graduation in royalties is accomplished either by the block, period, cumulative, or class method. The block method calls for a very low royalty rate on all oil produced up to a certain amount. This amount would normally be that which is believed to suffice to repay the cost of the well. A higher rate would be charged after the well is making a profit. This method, common in many industries, is peculiarly inadaptable to any industry such as this where the productivity per day of the units gradually and inevitably decreases. This, for reasons given later, is because it forces an early abandonment of the well and so offends against conservation. In the period method, the royalty rate is changed by some definite amount when the well produces less than a specified quantity per day or other given unit of time. While simple to explain, it operates badly because a great deal is made to depend upon a small reduction in production, whereas the reduction as a matter of fact declines rather erratically owing to the exigency of lease management, connecting of tankage, and vagaries of the gaugers. These disadvantages are obviated by the cumulative method. In this method, all the production less than a certain amount per week has one rate of royalty, or none at all, and the oil produced in excess of that amount pays an additional rate of royalty. In the long run the calculation is probably no greater than with the period method, for simple tables will be published and printed in the oil papers that can be cut out, enabling quick readings to be made. Even without the table the calculation is easy with the few royalty rates, two or three, which would be used. In this method, the amount paid in royalty declines gradually, rather than suddenly as in the period method. The following reasons might be advanced for the adoption oi cumulative royalties: 1. To distribute the burden in accordance with the capacity to pay. This principle is a unique one in business, although familiar in taxation. This is because it does not distribute reward in proportion to efficiency.

A novel technique for determining the surface energy (?) and its derivative with respect to orientation, (?') is described. Essentially it involves the 'floating" of a wedge on the substrate, said wedge being made of a material which is not wet or only slightly wet by the substrate, i. e., as a greased needle "floats" on water. A thermodynamic analysis of a system in which the wedge is supported entirely by surface energy is given. If the original suyface is not at a cusp orientation, the surface tension is directly measurable from the groove angle formed. If the original surface is at a cusp orientation, there may or may not be a groove depending on the relative value of ?' and the weight of the wedge. Experiments primarily on copper and silver showed that sapphire, quartz and refractory metal wedges were wet while graphite wedges were not. The technique was demonstrated to work using graphite wedges, but the results obtained were not as eccurate as those obtained by other workers using the wire-creep experiments. It is concluded that the technique might prove most useful with non-metals where ?' is large and filament creep experiments would be quite difficult. If an absolute value of the surface free energy (?) of a metal is to be determined, the most reliable methods used to date measure an average over the various orientations exposed on a polycrystalline sample. For example, ? for silver, gold, and copper have been measured by determining the force required to just keep a thin wire,' or foil,' specimen from contracting under the influence of ?. Herring 3 has predicted and experiment confirms, that the sensitivity of this method is inversely proportional to the grain size.' Thus it cannot be used to measure ? for a particular orientation by using a foil single crystal or a very coarse-grained specimen. An accurate value if ? for tungsten averaged over a range of orientations has been determined using a field emission technique. The same techniques cannot or have not been used to measure ? for non-metallic solids, and as a result the values available are much less accurate.4 This Paper resents a means of making an absolute determination of ? for a particular surface orientation on any solid, as long as the given surface orientation does not break up into other orientations during an anneal. Experimentally ? is found to vary with orientation and at a few low index orientations it is found to have a cusped minimum, i.e., the derivative of ? with respect to the orientation of the surface changes discontinuously at the low index orientation, see Fig. 1. The slope of a plot of ? vs orientation (herein designated ?') is called the torque on the surface, since it tends to rotate the exposed surface toward the low index orientation, or if the surface is at the cusp orientation it opposes any force tending to rotate the surface out of the low index orientation. The ratio ?'/? has been determined for a few metals, but in cases where this ratio is high there is presently no means of determining either ?'/? or the absolute value of ?' for the orientations present on an annealed surface. The technique discussed herein also provides a means of determining an absolute value of ?' for those orientations which deviate only infinitesimally from a cusp orientation. It should work best on surfaces where ?'/? is large; that is, for cases where no other technique is available for measuring ?'. Aside from trying to learn more about surfaces through measuring ? and ?', the primary reason for wanting values of ? or ?' is to study adsorption. From measurements of the variation of ? for a particular orientation with the concentration of an impurity, one can obtain the number of impurity atoms adsorbed per unit area (Ti) on that orientation using the Gibbs adsorption equation.' where µi is the chemical potential of the adsorbed impurity. Thus, if absolute values of ? could be obtained for the free surface of a given surface orientation as a function of µi, ri could be determined for the given orientation. Furthermore, by equilibrating a grain boundary with the given surface at various values of ki, one could also determine ri for the grain boundary. Similarly Robertson 6 has pointed out that if y is taken to be a continuous function of and µi, then a2 ?/a @a µ2 = a2 ?/a pi a +. Both smith1 and wells2 have shown that the dif-fusivity of carbon in austenite increases rapidly with increasing carbon concentration. Smith has shown, in addition, that part but not all of this increase can be attributed to the concentration dependence of the activity coefficient of carbon in austenite. From the work of Eshelby', it is known that, because of the image displacements, there is a uniform dilatation of the material in a body containing random centers of dilatation. It is thus tempting to explain the enhanced diffusivity as resulting from this apparent negative pressure caused by the interstitial carbon atoms.* That is, the activation free energy for diffusion is not directly a function of concentration if we consider that the alloy is subjected to a concentration-dependent pressure. To proceed with a quantitative solution, it is necessary to determine the activation volume AV for the diffusion process. An exact calculation of AV is quite a difficult problem and does not appear to have been solved as yet. A simpler procedure is to use the semiempirical, macroscopic theory of seyes' which relates the activation free energy AG to AV. Keyes has shown that for many types of diffusion processes the following relationship is valid Where p is the Gruneisen constant and x the compressibility. This relationship is based on the assumption that AG can be identified with strain-energy terms. In general there will also be contributions to AG due to a change in the energy of the valence electrons of the metal; thus the relation must be considered largely empirical. Surprisingly, for self-diffusion where it is well-known that the electronic contribution is quite important,' the Keyes relation works quite well for many systems. For interstitial diffusion where it might be expected that the relationship is on a firmer theoretical basis, the limited experimental data available is not in particularly good agreement as can be seen from Table I. However, it must be remembered that besides the uncertain basis of the Keyes formula there is considerable uncertainty in some of the experimental values of AV. The only real justification for using the Keyes formula in the present analysis is that it gives a result which satisfactorily solves the problem at hand and, further, there are no more reliable procedures for calculating AV available. The coefficient 3 in Eq. [I] is determined such that the room-temperature value for x is to be used. The activation entropy AS is estimated as 8.95 x 10"3 kcal per OK mole using the values in Table I1 and the Zener" relation AS = PAHIT, where p is a dimensionless thermal coefficient of Young's modulus which is to be evaluated at low values of T/T,, aH is the activation enthalpy, and T, is the melting temperature of the alloy. The resulting value of AG at 1000°C is 25.6 kcal per mole. The Gruneisen constant (p = 3cup/XC,), where p is the density, is evaluated from the room-temperature data in Table I1 after calculating C, from the relation. A value of p = 8.32 g per cu cm based on the value of a. in Table I is used. The result is C, = 5.0 x lo6 erg per g, H = 2.32, and AV = 3.41 cu cm per mole at 1000°C and infinite carbon dilution. It is assumed that the activation volume is not a function of carbon concentration. The theory could be refined to consider AV a function of concentration, but due to the uncertainties in the parameters there seems little justification for this. Carbon dissolved in austenite forms a nonideal solid solution, so that in writing an equation for. the diffusivity of carbon it is necessary to take into account the change in activity coefficient with concentration. Although millions of feet of rock are drilled annually, the basic drilling mechanisms involved are not well understood. The primary reason for this lack of knowledge is because the basic principles of rock failure are not well understood and rock failure is the primary mechanism in drilling. A better understanding of the drilling mechanisms would enable a more scientific approach to the design and use of drills and bits. The paper reviews several models which have been proposed to explain various aspects of the different drilling methods. These models are described and their limitations and areas of application are discussed. Drilling rate relationships are developed and related to the basic rock failure mechanisms. TYPES OF MECHANICAL DRILLS There are three basic methods of mechanically attacking rock: 1) percussive action, 2) rotary action, and 3) combined rotary-percussive action. A percussion drill applies a force perpendicular to the rock surface and the bit moves into the rock perpendicular to the surface, forming a crater beneath it (Fig. 1). A rotary drill applies a constant thrust to the bit while a torsional force moves the bit parallel to the rock surface, breaking the rock ahead of it. A rotary-percussive drill applies both a rotary force and a percussive force to the bit which moves into the rock at an angle to the surface. The commonly used drills can be classified as: rotary-drag, diamond; percussive-hammer, piston, churn; and combination-rotary-percussive, roller.

CERTAIN typical characteristics of bauxites, ores of aluminum permit their classification into a number of categories, each of which has special features that enable grouping within it deposits from widely scattered bauxite fields. There may be local variations in conditions that have introduced differences of lesser importance between similar deposits in different fields, resulting perhaps from the influence of factors other than those that have produced the distinguishing features of each of the different groups, but in general the similarity between the deposits in each group is sufficiently striking to make the grouping indicated of interest. Several factors and conditions enter into the decomposition process that results in the development of bauxites and laterites and affects their character. The principal conditions favoring optimum bauxitization are: (1) pres- ence of rocks with easily soluble minerals yielding residues rich in alumina; (2) effective rock porosity, enabling easy access and free circulation of water; (3) normal to abundant rainfall alternating with dry periods; (4) vegetation, including bacteria, advantageously distributed; (5) available sources of appropriate solution and precipitation agencies; (6) a tropical or at least a warm climate; (7) low to moderate topographic relief, allowing free movement of the water table but a minimum of erosion; and (8) long quiet periods in earth history. Assuming that all of these factors are operating to a greater or less degree, it seems that the one that affects most the physical character of the resulting bauxite or laterite deposits is the chemical and mineralogical composition of the rocks that by their decay yield the bauxite deposits. This factor is used in the classification followed in this paper. In the process of weathering of ordinary silicate and carbonate rocks of the earth's crust, whether of igneous or sedimentary origin, it is the minerals of the alkalies that yield most readily to attack. The alkaline earth compounds also offer no great resistance, particularly the carbonates. Thus, among the rock-forming elements, those producing the most insoluble compounds are aluminum, iron, and silicon, together with certain ones of less importance, such as titanium, manganese, and phosphorus. SCOPE OF DISCUSSION THE laws here referred to Are those which define the status of the prospector for mineral deposits in the soil or beneath it, establish his methods of procedure, protect him in his possession while searching for the subterranean treasures, and give him assurance of title when all required conditions have been fulfilled and valuable minerals discovered. Regulations for the operation of mines and the safety and health of mine employees are likewise subjects of Federal and State legislation, but are not within the scope of the present program. Various features of our present laws will be discussed in detail by able students of the subject, and specific remedies will be proposed for the most glaring defects. It is my purpose to present in this paper a summary review of the reasons why revision is needed and demanded by the great majority of those in daily contact with the industry.

A kinetic study of the hydrogen reduction of taconite from the Wisconsin Gogebic range was made over the temperature range from 500° to 1000°C on eleven size fractions from 4 to 150 mesh. Two stages of reduction were observed, a rapid initial reaction followed by a slower reaction presumably taking place at an internal receding FexO-Fe interface. Calculated mean activation energies for the two reactions were 7800 and 14,600 cal per mole respectively. In recent years there has been an increased interest in the direct reduction of iron oxide ores to metallic iron by means of gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide.1,2 These investigations have been motivated by the desire to develop a process that will by-pass the blast furnace in the production of steel. The majority of these processes have been developed to produce metallic iron by direct reduction from high-grade iron oxide ores.3"5 Very little work has been done on the low-grade siliceous iron oxide ores.6"8 The work reported here is directed principally towards the fundamental aspect of the reduction reactions of siliceous iron oxide ores, since the practical aspects of the gaseous reductant process were discussed previously. The ore used in the investigation was obtained originally from the United States Bureau of Mines10 trench sample of the Yale member of the Wisconsin Gogebic range iron formation. The Yale taconite has an average analysis of 28.2 pct Fe and approximately 50 pct SiO2. Chemically, these nonmagnetic taconites contain on the average about 53 pct silica and 30 pct Fe. An average analysis calculated fron the USBM10 figures for a composite of the five members (Norrie, Plymouth, Pence, Pabst, and ale) of the iron formation is given in Table I. Mineralogically, based on previous X-ray diffraction and other studies, the principal minerals are hematite (Fe2O3), geothite (Fe2O3.H2O), and quartz (SiO2). Minor amounts of iron containing silicates, siderite (FeCO3) and magnetite (FeO. Fe2O3) are present.10,11 The iron minerals and the quartz are finely disseminated requiring extremely fine grinding for liberation. For the experimental work, the ore sample was screened into a number of size fractions, the analyses and densities of which are given in Table II. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The reduction experiments were carried out in a 24 in. by 2 in. ID nichrome-wound vertical-tube furnace mounted on a stand. A 1 1/2 in. OD zirconium-oxide combustion tube was used inside the furnace to contain the atmosphere. To the top of this combustion tube was joined a pyrex ground-glass joint to which was attached a glass bulb with a small (1.0 mm) opening at the center, and with two outlets controlled with a stopcock on each side. A pyrex-glass joint with connections to three stopcock joints for introducing hydrogen, nitrogen, and mixtures of hydrogen and nitrogen gas was joined to the tapered bottom of the combustion tube. The sized ore fractions were contained in a 1 in. diameter by 1 1/2 in. 150-mesh nickel screen basket. The basket was suspended in the furnace from a balance by means of a supporting nickel wire which hung freely inside the combustion tube. The furnace temperature was controlled by a Leeds and Northrup Speedomax Type G controller, connected to a chromel-alumel thermocouple placed

WHEREVER the amount of work renders it practicable the plan of using permanent standard solutions, in connection with the colorimetric carbon test, affords such manifold advantages that it is to be strongly recommended. That it has not attained a wider and more general application, is mainly due to the fact that, as the method is generally employed, the difficulty attending the production of the colors, and their doubtful stability when produced, have been only too evident to those who have undertaken their composition. The old method of using standard solutions made from sugar, coffee, etc., has always been hampered by the tendency of the colors to change upon exposure to the light, and the consequent liability to serious error, unless they are closely watched. Appreciating these difficulties, while recognizing the desirability of permanent colors, Mr. Magnus Troilius, at the suggestion of Prof. F. L. Erkmann, investigated the properties of cobalt, copper and ferric chlorides, with the view of determining their efficacy in the production of standard solutions. His results, as obtained, seem to have been satisfactory, but his treatment failed to eliminate many of the objections that have rendered the use of organic colors undesirable. The

Some of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized statement of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey's Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part discusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have contributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways. General Geology Pre-Cambrian Rocks.—The oldest rocks in the district are schists, correlated with the Idaho Springs formation of the Front Range. Quartz-mica schist predominates, but other types occur locally; almost everywhere the rocks show considerable lit-par-lit injection. Intrusive into the schists are two varieties of granite, only one of which is widespread. It is a fine-grained, porphyritie, gray granite correlated with the Silver Plume granite of the Front Range. MOVEMENT on a fracture of irregular shape can cause local widening of the fissure and thereby offer freer channelways for circulation of ore-depositing solutions. This influence, coupled with large areas of wall rock available for reacting with ore solutions in brecciated and shattered ground can account for locally active deposition of metals and the resulting ore shoots. Such irregularities in the fracture system may be caused by local variations in the strength of rocks and by pre-existing lines of weakness, especially if these stand at favorable angles to certain components of the fracturing stress. Therefore correct interpretation of the mechanics of fracturing should permit deductions as to structurally favorable places on unexplored portions of the vein system. INTRODUCTION IT has long been recognized that movement on a curved or irregular fault surface is capable of separating the walls in certain portions of the fault, but until very recent years the importance of this mechanism as a factor in localizing ore shoots has escaped proper recognition. A short time ago W. H. Newhouse' presented a careful analytical study of displacements and their corresponding open spaces. For reasons that will be discussed later, it frequently happens that portions of the vein which are favorably oriented are not merely wider but also richer than the average. In many cases the widening with its accompanying richness coincides with very minor changes in the dip or strike of the vein, irregularities that commonly escape notice unless the vein is mapped in detail and a careful geometrical analysis made. While the relationship between the width of the vein and the changes in dip or strike has been recognized as a matter of observation, the irregularities have been accepted as more or less the result of accident. There has been very little effort except in isolated cases to find out the causes of these changes in dip or strike. Yet it is clear that if the causes can be recognized and expressed in terms of geologic structure the geologist will know where to look for repetitions of these favorable conditions either on extensions of the same vein or on adjoining veins. In the examination of an undeveloped prospect a decision must be arrived at from an inspection of the outcrops and the exposures in a few shallow pits. Prospects that are offered for sale rarely expose any important quantity of good ore, work having usually been stopped when the immediate exploration no longer yielded favorable results. It should be borne in mind, furthermore, that a great majority of prospects have been examined many times, and if of conspicuous promise, would have been acquired-for development. In most cases the problem for the engineer, therefore, is to discover the traces of a valuable mineralization that has disappeared through solution, or the conditions that indicate the possibility, or probability, of underlying secondary enrichments. The available data being meager, every feature should be the subject of careful study-the condition of the outcrop, the structural relationships, the associations of minerals, the alterations of wall rocks, the chances for underlying enrichments, and so forth, as well as the actual assay value of the material exposed. It is frequently advisable to spend the time and money necessary to have trenches dug at various significant points along a promising outcrop; such exposures, even if the depth attained is slight, often disclose conditions that are not apparent at the actual surface, as for example, the existence of soft minerals and the distribution of the various minerals through the mass of the deposit. Trenches also permit samples to be taken from points that were not accessible during former examinations. THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent. of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART 1.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent. of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust.
