Since the discovery of silver at Cobalt, Ontario, in August, 1903, more than 100,000,000 oz. of silver have been produced by the mines in the Nipissing district, and there is reason to believe that at least as much more will be produced in the nex five years. The estimated value of the aggregate output o ore to the end of 1910 is $48,327,280. The ore yielded 93,977,833, oz. of silver and was mined at a net profit of abou $16,000,000. For 1910 the production was 30,558,825 oz., valued at $15,436,894, and yielding a profit of about $9,000.000. The details of the production of the Cobalt district for the years 1904 to 1909, inclusive, as reported by the Ontario Bureau of Mines, are given in Table I. The shipments from Cobalt are in the form of smelting-ore, concentrates from milling-ore, and bullion. During the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000" C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. The silica tube was connected with an evacuating system so constructed that the volatilized gases could be removed from time to time and a low vacuum of 0.0002 to 0.0010 mm. of mercury continuously maintained. At no time during the period of heating or in the removal of the gases did the evacuated system come in contact with rubber stoppers or any rubber connections, making contamination from such a source, impossible. In other words, the only volatile products that could be: obtained must necessarily have come from the steel itself or from the glass and fused quartz system or from the mercury used as a sealing agent. In the carlier experiments, the steel treated was in the form of turnings, but this practice was discarded because the weight's of the turnings before and after being heated were widely inconsistent,, even when taken from the same piece of steel. This discrepancy developed largely through variation in the amount of metal volatilized with the gases; this metal could always be seen in the form of a ring where it condensed in the cooler portion of the tube in either the amorphous or crystalline condition. Because of the frequency in occurrence and the variation in the manner of deposition, this material was roughly analyzed and found to consist for the most part of iron. The predominant orientation in both straight-rolled and cross-rolled molybdenum is the {100} [110] texture. Upon complete recrystallization, this same texture predominates, but there is less spread about the ideal orientation. A secondary orientation about the [111] direction as the axis develops in cross-rolled sheet. Compression-rolled sheet exhibits random orientation in the plane of the sheet. Some mechanical properties were measured at varying angles to the rolling direction to determine the effect of preferred orientation on anisotropy in molybdenum sheet which had been straight, cross, or compression rolled. THE development of the arc-cast process has made available large ingots of molybdenum from which it is possible to roll sheet of considerable size. It is anticipated that such sheet will be further fabricated by spinning, drawing, stamping, or forming. Anisotropy of physical properties caused by the preferred orientation developed in the sheet during rolling may be expected to affect the behavior of the metal when subjected to these fabricating operations. To produce a sheet which will be most amenable to the fabrication of a given shape by a particular operation, consideration should be given to the directions and magnitudes of plastic deformations produced in the operation. When possible, the rolling schedule should be controlled to develop a texture which favors the required deformation. The existence of preferred orientations in rolled molybdenum sheet has been reported by Jeffries,' Konobejewsky,' Fujiwara," Goss,' and Ransley and Rooksby." None of these investigators obtained sufficient X-ray data to permit the construction of pole figures; instead, they based their conclusions upon Debye-Scherrer patterns of a limited number of positions. Ransley and Rooksby devoted some attention to transcrystalline cleavage at 45" to the rolling direction, indicating that it is appreciable in polycrystalline material only when the crystals are in the ideally preferred condition, and that this condition is only approached if the metal has been rolled successively in two perpendicular directions. In a recent paper, Custers and Riemersmao introduced the first pole figures to describe the textures of straight-rolled and cross-rolled molybdenum sheet. To increase the knowledge concerning the generation and effects of preferred orientations in molybdenum sheet, an investigation was undertaken to determine the effects of variations in rolling schedule and annealing treatments on preferred orientation, and to correlate preferred orientations with some mechanical properties. The orientations of straight-rolled, cross-rolled, and compression-rolled sheet have been determined by X-ray analysis, both as-rolled and after recrystallization. Pole figures have been constructed to describe the textures produced by these various rolling procedures. Texture of Cast Molybdenum Ingots In the arc-cast process, molybdenum powder is pressed into a vertical column which is sintered to increase its strength as it proceeds downward into a water-cooled mold, where the metal is melted in an alternating-current arc established between the end of the formed powder electrode and the metal bath at the top of the growing ingot. Since the solid-liquid interface moves continuously upward in the mold, the crystal axes are not normal to the cold surface of the mold but have the curvature shown in Fig. la. X-ray analysis reveals that the cube axis is the fiber axis and that it is normal to the cold surface of the mold; that is, the [loo] direction is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the ingot. Phase equilibria of the zinc-rich portion of the Zn-Fe-A1 system containing up to 20.0 wt pct Fe and Al have been investigated at 600°C (1112°F), 450°C (842°F), and room temperature by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The phase relationships were found to involve only those phases present in the three binary systems. THE presence of small quantities of aluminum (approx. 0.2 wt pct*) in zinc galvanizing baths is known to suppress the formation of Zn-Fe alloy layers within the coating.' As part of an extended investigation of this suppression effect and the alloy reactions involved, the zinc-rich corner of the Zn-Fe-A1 equilibrium system containing up to 20.0 pct Fe and Al was determined at 600°C (1112°F), 450° F (842° F), and room temperature. The present paper reports the findings of this study. The constitution of the Zn-Fe system has been reported by Raynor2 based mainly on the work of Schramm3-3 and Truesdale et a1.6 The solid solubility of iron in zinc is extremely small and lies between 0.0009 and 0.0028 pct in the range 150° to 400°C (302°to752°F). Within the temperature and composition range of interest, a eutectic reaction involving nearly pure zinc, liquid = Zn+FeZn13, is observed at about 419°C (786° F) and 0.018 pct Fe along with a peritectic reaction, FeZn7+ liquid e FeZn13, at 530°C (986° F) and 6.2 pct Fe. The latter reaction is sluggish due to the large proportipn of solid phase involved in the transformation. Halla et al.,7 identified the compound FeZn13 as monoclinic with a = 13.68, b = 7.63, c = 5.07, and B = 128°44'. The structure of FeZn7 was reported by Bablik, et al.,8 to be of hexagonal symmetry, belonging to either the C6v = C6/m mc or D46h = C6/mc space group. Divensions of the unit cell are a = 12.81A and c = 57.6a. The Zn-A1 diagram as composed by Raynor9 and later Gebhardt10 is characterized by a eutectic decomposition, liquid 382°C (720°F) and 95.0 pct Zn and a eutectoid decomposition, at 275° (527°F) and 78.0 pct Zn. The eutectoid reaction cannot be suppressed permanently by quenching. Above 275° (527° F), a and a' co-exist in a closed miscibility gap between 31.6 and 78.0 pct Zn. Both phases are fcc and have nearly the same lattice parameter. The maximum solubility of aluminum in zinc (B) is approximately 1.0 pct at the eutectic temperature. PROCEDURE Materials. The experimental alloys were prepared from both massive and powdered material. WHEN asked a few weeks ago if we wished to visit the Coors plant at Golden, Colo., we agreed with alacrity being well acquainted with the high quality of Coors beer and having heard that the company was most liberal about sampling privileges. Instead of a brewery, we found ourselves in a pottery, the Coors Porcelain Co., owned and operated by the firm of beer fame. Our apparent disappointment was dispelled as the wonders of the porcelain products were unfolded.

The effect of Group VIII transition-element additions on the sintering of tungsten powders is shown to be dependent on the phase relationships of the particular tungsten-Group VIII metal alloy system. The acceleration of sintering with nickel additions is diminished by alloying nickel with copper which is known to diminish both the tungsten solubility in nickel and the solid-vapor surface energy. In work previously published on the effects of additions of Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, and Ir, which form solid solutions or intermediate phases of wide composition width with tungsten, sintering behavior is independent of element concentration beyond that concentration necessary to form a continuous layer on the surface of the tungsten powders employed. The sintering behavior of tungsten with additions of iron or cobalt, which form intermetallic compounds with tungsten, is highly dependent on addition-element concentration. Additions in excess of amounts necessary to form continuous layers lead to successively decreased sintering rates. The effects of certain Group VIII transition metals on the sintering rates of tungsten at temperatures below those at which a liquid phase would be predicted have recently been investigated by the present authors1-4 It was found that small additions of palladium, nickel, rhodium, platinum, and ruthenium accelerate the rate of tungsten sintering. Additions of iridium decelerated the rate of densification compared to that of pure tungsten in the same temperature range. In all cases the rate of densification changed with increasing amounts of these additions, up to those compositions at which a continuous layer was formed on the surfaces of the tungsten-powder particles. The rate of densification was then independent of further increases of the compositions of any of these addition elements. These observations were consistent with a sintering model in which the addition element formed an interface with tungsten in which tungsten dif-fusivity was either greater or less than its grain boundary self-diffusivity. THERMAL expansion of rhenium data have been reported by Agte et al.,&apos; and Medoff and cadoff,&apos; respectively, while the linear expansion coefficient was determined by Sims et Al.3 Denoting expansion coefficients parallel and at right angle to c axis by all and Al respectively, their weighted mean should be equal to dilatometric linear coefficient of a random polycrystalline specimen. The values reported for these coefficients are tabulated below: Since these values are in poor agreement, and because of anomalous expansion behavior observed in titanium 4 and chromium, a rede termination of the axial expansion was carried out. A Unicam 19-cm-diam high-temperature camera was used, with unfiltered CuK radiation. Camera calibration was carried out using at Pt wire standarde at temperatures up to 1100oC, the variation between indicated and true temperature being within the experimental error (estimated at <3oC) above 750o C. Rhenium Johnson Matthey spectrographic standard) was vacuum annealed at 1000 oC prior to X-ray diffraction experiments. Lattice parameters were obtained by least-squares solution using the reflec- tions (1232), (1015), (2024), and (3030) for all the patterns, and the additional reflection (2133) for higher temperature (400°C and above) patterns. The relative expansion data obtained are shown in Fig. 1, lengths of the vertical bars indicating the spread in the parameter values obtained by using various combinations of three spacings from the four or five measured. The data calculated from the equation of Ref. 2 are included for comparison purposes. Several specimens were used to obtain the above data, neither of them showing a significant parameter change after completion of the high temperature runs. Some parameter data and the corresponding expansion coefficients between 25 oC and the measurement temperature are tabulated below. The comparison of the present data with those previously reported shows reasonable agreement with the results of Medoff and cadoff2 within the temperature range covered by them (up to 1000 oC). The a values are appreciably higher throughout most of the investigated temperature range. The basal expansion is—in agreement with their findings—appreciably higher than that in the direction of hexagonal axis. The expansion coefficient, al, however, decreases rather more slowly with temperature than previously reported. The expansion along the c axis up to nearly 1000°C appears in excellent agreement. However, at higher temperatures there is a marked deviation towards higher expansion, reproducible between different specimens. Furthermore, there seems to be some irregularity in the variation of all with temperature, the apparent local minimum and maximum values at 510o and 1024o C, Table II, being well outside the experimental error limits. It must be stressed that the apparent discontinuity in the c parameter expansion is still insufficient to account for the expansion value reported by Agte et al.&apos; since a total expansion of close to 2 pct would

Pegmatites occur in abundance in certain areas of South West Africa and in adjacent parts of northern Cape Province in the Union of South Africa. Some of the pegmatite deposits were prospected before World War I, and intermittent mining was done during the period between the two World Wars. The deposits of the Jooste lithium mines became an important source of lepidolite, and beryl, columbite-tantalite, wolframite, and other minerals were produced. Since World War I1 prospecting and mining have been carried on vigorously, with the result that South West Africa produced nearly 3000 tons of beryl during 1949 through 1953, together with more than 40,000 tons of lithium minerals, chiefly lepidolite and petalite. Small amounts of tantalite, columbite, and other minerals have also been produced during the postwar period. Most of this mineral production has come from two pegmatite areas roughly outlined in Fig. 1. One is the Karibib-Omaruru area of north central South West Africa. The second is the northeastern part of the Orange River pegmatite area, which extends into adjacent parts of Namaqualand, in northern Cape Province of the Union of South Africa

(communication to the Secretary): I have been specially interested in Mr. Drake&apos;s valuable contribution to our knowledge of the Chinese coalareas, as I had occasion, about a year ago, to make a reconnoissance over some of the coal-fields in the Yangtse river valley. I noticed, as he appears to have done, certain peculiarities which may eventually prove to be characteristic of the Chinese coal-measures, at least in central and northern China. The most striking feature, perhaps, is the invariable proximity of the great granite masses to those coal-deposits which have an anthracite character. In common with all other anthracite areas elsewhere, the Chinese show evidences of profound stratigraphical disturbances. The sedimentary rocks are folded, faulted and dislocated in a manner similar to those of the Pennsylvania anthracite-regions. It would seem that the intrusive granite had much to do with converting the original bituminous into present anthracite. The action of the granite was probably direct as a conveyor of heat, and indirect as dynamic force in dislocating, overturning, and compressing the coal-measures. My stay in China was unfortunately cut short, so that I was unable to collect fossils, or to give this highly interesting and important subject more than passing attention. Cholnoky* and Richthofen are practically agreed that these granite eruptions took place during the Tertiary period—probably the Eocene. This profound tectonic movement has had a most important effect upon the geological conditions in central and northern China, and will be, I am sure, a potent factor in the economic development. Evidences of disturbances and metamorphism are very abundant in the anthracite-areas of the Yangtse valley. I noticed the coal in them, as did Mr. Drake in northern China, to be often flaky and " slickensided."

THE Pima pit is a 1700x1400-St oval, the long T axis parallel to the strike of the orebody. The north side of the pit is carried as a final pit slope that coincides with the footwall of the orebody. The south side and east and west ends of the pit are working slopes continually being stripped back toward the final slopes. An inclined roadway extending from the natural ground surface on a 5 pct grade down to the north- east corner provides access to the pit. This road enters the pit 130 ft below the natural surface and continues as a pit ramp on a 5 pct grade to the 3150-ft bench (roughly the base of the alluvial cover). At this point the ramp system is steepened to a 12 pct grade and continues to the pit bottom. The 5 pct grade is maintained in the alluvial section to facilitate scraper haulage out of the pit. In addition to this main access ramp, temporary working ramps in the alluvial areas allow shorter routes to dumps. These are left on top of working benches and do not change the overall working slopes. Below the base of the alluvium, haulage is by truck down to the skip loading point or up from the bottom to the skip loading point.

INTRODUCTION Comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages; exceptions being when a final product such as aggregates, specification sand, Portland Cement, and similar products is produced. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding -- primary and secondary), natural or manufactured non-metallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media -- steel rods, steel or iron balls. This chapter will discuss general mill design and the specific design and application of the following types of tumbling grinding mills. Liners The interior surface of grinding mills exposed to grinding media and/or the material being ground are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic, a combination of rubber and metallic, or non-metallic wear resistant materials. B. Drives Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simplest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinion-shaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling.

TWELVE years ago, a meeting of coal-mine operators, mining engineers, oil and gas operators, Bureau of Mines engineers, geologists and state mine inspectors took place in Pittsburgh, Pa. for the purpose of discussing, and solving if possible, the problems in connection with the drilling of oil and gas wells through or near coal mines and through the future coal reserves. Proposed regulations were drafted and presented at that meeting by 0. P. Hood and A. G. Heggem of the Bureau of Mines.1There was considerable discussion of the various articles, practically all of which appear in Bulletin 65, but unfortunately the interest aroused at that meeting was short lived. Practically none of the important coal-, producing states gave the matter the consideration it should have received at that time. REASONS FOR AGAIN RAISING THE QUESTION Notwithstanding the marked progress in, safety work, coal mines still have an unenviable reputation for mine explosions. Our mining laws have become stricter and the enforcement, especially in Pennsylvania, more sternly carried out, but what good will come from a rigid carrying out of the mining laws if some source of danger exists all around the mines, over which the operators have no control? It is hardly necessary to recite all the cases of natural-gas explosions published in Bulletin 65, but with some of them I am especially familiar. In 1912, while making one of my usual Sunday visits to the Miners&apos; Hospital, at Fairmont, W. Va., my attention was called to a patient in a horribly burned condition. He was swathed in bandages so that no part of his face and hands were visible. He had not then been informed that his two sons, mere boys, had died of the burns they had received in the same accident. This explosion was due to natural gas leaking into a country mine at Peora, Harrison Co., W. Va.

THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 1400°F. (760°C.), the metal becomes non-magnetic, and at the "As point," 1670°F. (910°C.), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 1400 to 1670°F., it is sometimes called beta (0) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 2550°F. (1400°C.), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non-magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in a hydrogen atmosphere) at 2795°F. (1535°C.); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures. (1) For example, in heating through the As point a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 27 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always the case. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no transformation occurs. Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well. Of the metals which are liquid at the melting point of iron only lead, silver, and bismuth refuse to dissolve to an appreciable extent. The non-metals presumably dissolve by virtue of the formation of an iron compound; for example, sulphur is thought to dissolve as the compound FeS. Precipitation processes occurring during both furnace cooling and aging of copper-iron albys were studied by means of electrical and magnetic measurements. On furnace cooling, two distinct stages in the precipitation process were detected; one occurring above and the other below 850° C. The kinetics of precipitation from quenched alloys were studied between 200° and 700°C. The reaction appears to be consistent with the concept of tmcleation of precipitate particles at dislocation loops formed by the clustering of quenched-in vacancies. A study Of in copper-iron alloys is particularly interesting because the combination of magnetic and electrical properties in these allovs provides a quantitative means of following the course of the precipitation reaction. 13.6-1. Importance. In Germany there are large tertiary brown coal reserves, most of which are located close to the surface. Therefore, brown coal has been recovered for many years by means of opencast methods. By utilizing a high degree of technology, a rational operation has been achieved, and as a result, the mining techniques have become renowned all over the world. After the war, all the dredgers and overburden spreaders, as well as the means of conveyance, had to be redeveloped for adapting this equipment to the changing conditions of the deposits. Numerous auxiliary machines were adopted from the American earth moving industry and altered according to the different requirements. As a result of such technical developments, the output per man and per shift was increased remarkably in spite of the deterioration of the geological conditions. In the whole of Germany, the total reserves of brown coal amount to 100 billion metric tons, of which 60 billion tons are situated in the Federal Republic of Germany. In the latter area, 8.5 billion tons will be recover- able by opencast means, of which 3.5 billion tons are already developed. The annual output reached 102 million tons in 1965. This total figure comes from four different mining districts: Rhineland, Helmstedt (town at the border of the Soviet occupied zone), Hesse, and Bavaria.
