A hybrid finite element-boundary element code with eight noded isoparametric finite elements and three noded boundary elements is described for plane strain and linear isotropic elasticity. In the direct formulation of the Boundary Flement Method, quadratic variation of geometry and displacements, and linear variation of tractions with respect to the element intrinsic coordinates are used. The boundary element region is treated as a "super-element" in the finite element sense.

In order to calculate the critical particle size of lead oxide entrapped in lead, Stoke's Formula may be applied. All data were available except figures for the density of lead oxide at elevated temperatwes. The density of lead oxide was determined by means of dilatometmetrc and volumetric methods up to 1010°C. Graphs of the density of lead and lead oxide as well as the viscosity of lead are given and discussed, with the conclusion that the most unfavorable region for the separation of lead oxide from molten lead lies just above the melting point of lead. DURING previous investigations, particularly on the dedrossing of lead with aluminum1 and the oxygen solubility in lead,' the critical particle size of lead oxide which could be entrapped in solidifying lead was estimated by calculation, and it was shown that high values found for the oxygen content of lead may be due to the method of sampling and the entrapped particles of dross. Unfortunately, due to lack of data, an exact mathematical solution was not possible. The particle size which will separate under a given condition can be estimated from Stoke's Law, which states that where: d = diameter of the critical particle size ¦q = viscosity of lead in Poise V = constant velocity in cm sec-I g = 981 cm sec-2 61= specific gravity of lead 62= specific gravity of lead oxide The depth of the lead bath and the time before solidifying define the velocity. The viscosity of molten lead is known from earlier work by Krysko and is given in Table I. The specific gravity of lead is also known, see Table II. These values are according to Hofmann. A careful survey of literature revealed no values for the density of lead oxide at elevated temperatures. The present investigation was therefore conducted to provide this information. RESEARCH INVESTIGATIONS The density of lead oxide was determined from the following experiments: 1) Determination of the density of lead oxide at room temperature. 2) Dilatometric investigations on the same samples. 3) Determination of the shrinkage at the liquid-solid trans£ormation. 4) Density determinations on liquid lead oxide. 5) Time temperature curves during cooling. 1) The samples for the determination of the density of lead oxide in the solid state were prepared in the following manner. Molten lead oxide was cast into I hot mold which could be opened along the longitudinal (vertical) axis. The cast samples were cylinders of approximately 10 mm diam and approximately 80 mm length. The cylindrical hot mold was open at both ends and was placed on a large copper chill plate shortly before casting. The solidification of the lead oxides proceeded upwards without any formation of internal cavities. The sample was carefully checked with respect to density and crystalline appearance, and only the lower portions which were crystalline and free from porosity were used. The density was determined in a specially made pyknometer-like container, where the surplus liquid was squeezed out through an orifice approximately 1/10 mm in diameter. Mercury or water was used as the liquid. The densities of the samples were calculated from the weight, volume, and mean specific gravity of eight samples was 9.62 * 0.05 g cm"3 at 22"~. 2) The samples were machined to approximately 1 1/2 in. in length and fitted into a dilatometer. The magnetic susceptibilities of some ores and the major rock formations of the Precambrian Belt Supergroup in the Coeur d'Alene mining district were determined both in the laboratory by the use of the Gouy method and in the field with a Bison susceptibility unit. Trace element analysis of the same group of rock samples was also made using the atomic adsorption technique. Results of this preliminary study indicate that some correlation exists between the magnetic susceptibilities and the various rock formations. This may be useful for regional mapping and mineral exploration.

THE Western phosphate deposits extend over a large area in the Rocky Mountain region, comprising portions of south central Montana, southeastern Idaho, northeastern Utah, and southwestern Wyoming. A limited acreage of these deposits passed into private ownership prior to Dec. 9, 1908, at which time 7000 sq. mi. of land in these phosphate fields was withdrawn from public entry by direction of the Secretary of the Interior. Under the Act of Feb. 25, 1920 (41 Stat. 437) title to all phosphate lands in the public domain was reserved to the United States with provisions for leasing portions to citizens, corporations, states, etc. The above act, in effect, created by law a Western phosphate reserve of approximately 2,269,055 acres.

MORE years ago than I care to admit I conferred the title of "combustion engineer? upon my-self since nobody else would confer it. I thought at the time, and for some, years thereafter, that my field was limited to the precincts where the fuel was being burned, but I found that I could stand in the door of the furnace room and hear distressed heat units calling for help all over the plant. Some of them were over-worked, others were compelled to do useless work, and still others, anxious to render a proper account of themselves, were not permitted to do any sort of work at all and were utterly wasted. The combustion engineer has something to do at that interesting occasion when the heat unit is being born in the furnace, but his responsibility does not end there. He must follow the little fellow throughout the entire period of its hectic existence in the plant and see that it gets a fair chance and a square deal everywhere. I fear that the general impression of the combustion engineer's duties is much as mine was in the beginning; that his job is limited to the implements and processes incident to the specific operation of converting fuel into active, heat energy and of applying it to the boiler, the still, or what-not, with the least possible waste. But is it not true that a heat unit saved in a remote corner of the plant means just as much to the fuel account as another saved at the furnace? And if nobody else is looking after the heat units out on the range why should the combustion engineer spend all of his time hanging around the corral? If combustion engineer is not a broad enough title to cover the man in charge of a general heat unit rescue campaign call him any-thing else you please. The job is all that counts. The name means nothing. A skunk by any other name would smell as bad. The greatest field I have ever found for general "heat rescue" work is the oil refinery. In refining we first put heat into the oil and then take it away from the vapor. The greatest heat losses occur during the cooling operation, but there are losses, many of them preventable, either wholly or partly, at every step of the several processes in oil refining.

Arrangements have been completed in New York whereby the re- sources of The Engineering Foundation, under the auspices of the four principal national engineering societies, are placed at the disposal of the National Research Council, which was appointed by the National Academy of Sciences* at the request of President Wilson. The object of the Council is to coordinate the scientific research work of the country in order to secure efficiency in the solution of the problems of war and peace. The Council was without funds until The Engineering Foundation, established to further scientific and engineering research, offered to place its resources at the Council's disposal, including the services of its secretary, Dr. Cary T. Hutchinson, to act as-secretary of the Council. The offer was accepted and plans for immediate activities have been placed in the hands of an executive committee. In indicating how thoroughly, every branch bf science and engineering is represented, Dr. George E. Hale, Director of the Mt. Wilson Solar Observatory, and Chairman of the Council, when he was in New York attending to the details of the arrangement, called attention to the personnel of the body, saying that it is the purpose to enlist the cooperation, in the solution of our industrial and military problems of a scientific character, of every possible established agency. Medicine, for example, is represented on the Council by Dr. William H. Welch, President of the National Academy of Sciences, Brigadier General William C. Gorgas, , Surgeon Crenera.1 of the United States Army, Dr. Simon Flexner, Director of the Rockefeller Medical Institute, and Dr. Victor C. Vaughan, Past President of the American Medical Society; biological science by Dr. Edwin G. Conklin, Professor of Zoology, Princeton University; chemistry by Dr. A. A. Noyes of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dr. L. H. Baekeland; physics by Dr. A. A. Michelson of the University of Chicago; and electricity by Professor M. I. Pupin, of Columbia University.

Commercial demand for gold in the United States is important. It has a large impact on the total world commercial and overall non-monetary demand. Given the present free market price and our need to import gold, it has a substantial adverse effect upon our international payments position. But, according to most recent estimates, the United States demand is perhaps no more than 20% of the world as a whole. In 1971, United States consumption was estimated at 215.6 tons out of a total of 1,412.1 tons 1. This figure is very close to the 16% figure developed by Consolidated Gold Fields as the average for the years 1968-1970.2 Surveys of both production and use of gold on a world-wide basis are not new. With the bulk of gold production in only a few countries, it has been possible to develop fairly reliable series on gold output. Estimates have been developed on the known reserves of gold and probable output at various prices.3 On the demand side, figures have been somewhat less complete and reliable. The Bank for International Settlements and the Director of the United States Mint have regularly published estimates of commercial use in major industrial countries. The IMF has issued an increasingly comprehensive survey in its Annual Reports. The IMF has attempted to cover all nations-not restricting its efforts to major industrial nations-and has tried to estimate both gold taken for commercial uses (Estimated Industrial and Artistic Use) and for private hoarding. Their method is to begin with data on free world output plus any net sales by the Soviet Union, subtract any additions to world monetary stocks (or add to available supply for any net reductions in world monetary stocks), subtract estimates for commercial demand and have left as a residual an estimate for private hoarding. The method is straightforward and simple but the quality of the data is suspect. Industry sources tend to believe the figures as biased on the low side because of a persistent tendency to underreport gold movements.4

The notion prevails that writing is a knack, that the skilful use of the pen is a gift of nature. This is an error. Dogberry may be responsible for it; he said: "To be a well-informed man is the gift of fortune, but to write and read comes by nature". Because Dogberry said it, we may be sure that Shakespeare thought otherwise. Ability of any sort may be partly innate, but my own observation and experience lead me to conclude that most of the easy writers have become so by constant practice. As I recall the names of men successful with the pen, I remember that most of them have written a great deal and have taken particular pains to improve their style. The suggestion that proficiency in the difficult art is a happy accident provokes a sardonic smile. The larger part of the great writing in our literature is the result of persistent effort. An easy fluency has been the undoing of many; their flamboyant and fantastic scribbling has proved as perishable as froth. This criticism applies to technical writing also; in order that a technical description or discussion may hold the interest of the reader, at least long enough to cause him to read it to the end, the writing must be done carefully and systematically; otherwise it will fail in its purpose of conveying information. Clearness is absolutely essential. "It is not enough to use language that may be understood; it is necessary to use language that must be understood."* The purpose of writing, at least of that which is meant to be read by others, is not only to express ideas but to communicate them. RECONNAISSANCE of a part of southeastern Idaho and small strip of western Wyoming lying between longitudes 111° and 111° and 45' W., and latitudes 43° and 43° and 30' N., comprising an area of approximately 1330 sq. mi., was undertaken during the summer of 1923 for the collection of data regarding the oil possibilities of the region. TOPOGRAPHY, SETTLEMENT, AND ACCESSIBILITY The entire area lies within the upper Snake River drainage basin. Snake River flows through the northeastern and eastern part of the area in a northwesterly direction. The entire drainage system has been controlled by the structure of the sedimentary beds in the area, which exhibit numerous alternations of hard and soft strata with consequent unequal erosion. Phase diagrams of the titanium-rich portion of the ternary systems from 0 to 10 wt pct Al and 0 to 1 wt pct 0, N, and C were determined. Micrographic analysis of annealed high purity arc melted alloys was the principal method of investigation and was supplemented by X-ray diffraction. TITANIUM-ALUMINUM alloys exhibit excellent properties, particularly for elevated temperature use. For this reason, the Materials Laboratory, Wright Air Development Center, sponsored an investigation of the effect of the interstitially soluble contaminants, oxygen! nitrogen, and carbon, on the Ti-A1 system. Using high purity arc melted alloys and micrographic analysis of annealed samples as the chief method of investigation, titanium-rich partial phase diagrams were determined for the ternary systems. Experimental Procedure Materials: The titanium used in the preparation of the alloys was iodide crystal bar (99.9+ pct pure) produced by the New Jersey Zinc Co. and Foote Mineral Co. The aluminum was obtained from the Aluminum Co. of America in the form of sheet. The given analysis was: Si, 0.0006 pct; Fe, 0.0005; Cu, 0.0022; Mg, 0.0003; Ca, <0.0006; Na, <0.0005; and Al, 99.99. High purity titanium dioxide purchased from the National Lead Co. was used in the preparation of the oxygen-bearing alloys. The spectrographic analysis of this material was as follows: SiO,, 0.07 pct; Fe,O,,, 0.002; A1,0,, <0.001; Sb,O,, <0.002; SnO,,, <0.001; Mg, <::0.001; Cb, <0.01; Cu, 0.0004; Pb, 0.002; Mn, <0.00005; W, <0.01; V, <0.002; Cr, <0.002; Ni, <0.001; and Mo, <0.002. Special spectroscopic graphite rod purchased from the National Carbon Co. was used in the preparation of the Ti-A1-C alloys. Alloy Preparation: Alloy ingots weighing 10 grams were melted in a nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc melting furnace using water-cooled copper hearths and a helium atmosphere. The arc was struck on a tungsten stud in the copper block to minimize contamination from the electrode. Details of the techniques have been reported.&apos;, &apos; Each ingot was inverted and remelted a minimum of four times to insure homogeneity, without opening the furnace. Remelting small control ingots of iodide titanium under similar conditions resulted in no measurable hardness increase, indicating contamination-free melting conditions were used. The alloy charges and resultant ingots were weighed to the nearest milligram. Only small weight losses were obtained upon melting, indicating that the actual compositions were very close to the nominal compositions. Check analyses substantiated this. Oxygen and nitrogen were added during ingot preparation as master alloys. An oxygen master alloy containing 25 wt pct 0 was prepared by melting iodide titanium and pressed titanium dioxide (40 pct 0) powder. The Ti-25 pct 0 alloy is more easily handled during weighing and charging than the pressed TiO, powder. Chemical analysis indicated that titanium-nitride received from an outside source contained large amounts of impurities (2.7 pct Ca). Therefore, a master alloy containing approximately 12 pct N was prepared by melting nitrided sponge titanium. As the sponge melted with difficulty, the alloy was diluted by addition of titanium to lower the melting point. The chemical analysis of the final alloy was 6.69 pct N. Both master alloys are friable and were used as —8 +16 mesh lumps resulting from crushing the ingots. NIelting the Ti-A1-0 and Ti-A1-N compositions five times produced homogeneous ingots. The preparation of homogeneous carbon-bearing alloys caused considerable difficulty. Alloys containing less than 1 pct C were prepared using spectrographic graphite rod, 1/8 in. diameter by 1/8 in. long. However, the graphite did not dissolve even with long melting times and many remelts. The ?/s in. pieces of graphite were used rather than powder because the low density powder is troublesome in arc melting.

The thermoelectric power and electrical conductivity of a series of liquid alloys of thallium were determined in order to study the relation of chemical bonding to semiconduction in liquids. The results indicate metallic behavior for the alloys of thallium with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth, while the sulfides, selenides, and tellurides indicate semiconduction. The results are compared with the Properties of the same alloys in the solid state. This work supports the observation that long-range order is not a necessary requirement for semiconduction. PREVIOUS work1,5 has shown that some sulfides and oxides behave as semiconductors in the liquid state. Although the band theory has been of great help in understanding the properties of solid semiconductors, its quantitative application to liquids is difficult. The very existence of liquid electronic semiconductors shows that ascribing the discrete structure of the energy spectrum to strict lattice periodicity, or long-range order, is not always satisfactory. Rather, the short-range order determines the structure of energy levels and the width of the forbidden gap and, consequently, the concentration of free holes and electrons. This is borne out by the analysis of data accumulated by Regel and coworkers.6 The similarity of electronic structure of liquid and solid phases of certain liquid metals was pointed out by Knight et a1.,7 who examined nuclear resonance in solid and liquid Li, Na, Rb, Cs, Mg, Al, Ga, Sn, and Bi. They found noticeable changes in the electronic structure upon melting only in the cases of bismuth and gallium. They concluded that "a liquid metal possesses a band structure which is very like that of the solid, provided the short-range structure is not altered during melting." In semiconductors in which the near-neighbor arrangement remains the same on fusion, the material would be expected to retain its semiconducting properties. The quantum theory of semiconductors, with its band structure of energy levels, is linked exclusively to long-range order. Furthermore, it has limited usefulness in predicting new semiconductors. Many sulfide8-12 have made comparisons of properties on the basis of crystal structure or the position in the periodic table, both methods involving the same factors as chemical bonding. Mooser and Pearson8"10 have pointed out that crystal structure depends on chemical bonding, and that this bonding is a property of the atoms themselves. As the periodic arrangement of the atoms offers an easy comparison of such factors as atomic weight and number of valence electrons it provides clues to expected similarities of bonding for various elements or groups of elements. This approach has led Mooser and Pearson to formulate their valence-bond theory of semiconduction, in which they define a semiconducting bond. These authors state that "semiconductivity is the result of the presence in a solid of predominantly covalent bonds. These lead, through the process of electron sharing, to completely filled s and p orbi-tals in the valence shells of all atoms of elemental semiconductors while in semiconducting compounds only one atom of any two bonded together need acquire closed s and p orbitals. The presence of empty &apos;metallic&apos; orbitals in some atoms of a compound does not destroy the semiconductivity provided that these atoms are not bonded together; it may, however, give rise to pivoting resonance in

The stabilities of finely divided mineral suspensions were determined as functions of pH and concentrations of polyethylene oxide, sodium ligninsulfonate, sodium dodecybulfate, and sodium oleate. In addition, the electrokinetic potentials of the minerals were determined under identical pH and additive concentration conditions. Flocculation or dispersion of the suspensions is discussed in terms of both the amount and manner of adsorption at the appropriate solid-liquid interface as it is influenced by additive concentration and pH.

UNDER the stimulus of steadily in- creasing &apos;demands of the steel industry at home, and with the supply of available ores from abroad appreciably diminished owing to vigorous rearmament campaigns in Europe, production of Eastern magnetite ores reached an all- time peak in 1937. Although the figures given in the accompanying table are partly estimated (actual figures were available for eleven months only), it appears that 1937 production was nearly 47 per cent higher than that of 1936.
