OUR colleges and universities have met many difficulties during the past year. From a period of small enrollments and depleted faculties, the educational institutions have passed quickly to a period of the largest enrollments in their history with inadequate facilities and staffs. The results of the shortsighted policy of the Selective Service system which drained the technical schools and universities of many of the students who were potential teachers are now being felt. The movement of faculty members into positions in industry during the war years has resulted in many of them forsaking permanently the educational field for the higher salaried positions they now occupy. Competition is keen between the educational institutions, and between the institutions and industry, for technically trained men. Dean Holbrook's statement in last year's annual review that he thought it would take three or four years to restore our engineering departments to their former level in quality of instructors is even more convincing today. Somehow, the institutions must not only reach their former level in quality of instruction but they must also increase the quantity of their staffs to meet the demands of the ex-service men and the high school graduates for engineering education. The enrollments in the mineral industry fields of mining, metallurgical, geological, petroleum, and ceramic engineering, although greatly increased, are not expanding as much as in the more widely known fields of electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and civil engineering. In fact, many educators are tremendously worried about the segregation of so many young men in a relatively few fields while the needs of others will remain unanswered.

Under sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy, a new type of rotary rock drill was developed by The Bendix Corp. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. It allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. This paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal, metal/nonmetal mining, and for civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

THE peak of production from the Appalachian natural gas field was apparently reached about 10 years ago, and the annual production from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio has now dropped to about two-thirds of the amounts obtained in 1916 and 1917. This .falling off in production has occurred in spite of vigorous efforts and large expenditures by producing companies to maintain or increase their output. The greatly increased costs of development and handling are reflected in the present average value of natural gas at the point of consumption, which value in the three states referred to, has more than doubled in the past 10 years. While it is true that the natural gas production of the United States has increased during recent years, this increase has come from southwestern states, particularly from Oklahoma, California, Louisiana and Texas, which states are now leaders in the production of this valuable but fleeting resource. Pennsylvania, originally the leading state in natural gas production, occupies sixth place in the latest (1924) U. S. Bureau of Mines statistics. West Virginia, which held first place for 15 years, has dropped to third rank, and Ohio is the seventh state in the order of natural gas production. Domestic and industrial demands for gas are constantly increasing everywhere in the United States. These growing demands have accentuated the difficulties in the localities with depleted natural gas supplies, and serious shortages have already occurred during winter months in the Pittsburgh district. Some relief has been obtained by placing restrictions on the industrial use of natural gas, and by increasing the price (which tends to reduce consumption). Yet these are but temporary expedients for checking gas consumption, which fail to solve the problem of adequate future supplies of gas.

(communication to the Secretary*).¬I assume that where this valuable paper states, near its end, that "it is not possible to establish a market price, " the author means that no particular price which will fit all conditions and fields can be given. I am not in agreement with Mr. Wyer, however, that the actual value of natural gas leaseholds is "largely a matter of opinion." I would even be willing to express myself very strongly as believing that if we, as experts, cannot give anything closer than a mere opinion, our testimony or reports are not of great value to our clients. I believe, moreover, that by detailed geological examinations and with our latest knowledge of geological structure, principles of natural gas occurrence, etc., we can approach just as near a certainty in natural gas valuations as we can in oil valuations, and much more so than in the valuation of many metal prospects, in which only the upper few feet of the vein has been opened. In other words, we are getting nearer and nearer every year to bringing geology as applied to oil and gas development into the class of an exact science. Mr. Wyer's paper gives an excellent outline for methods of leasehold valuation. Being presumably intended as an outline only, it can be expanded indefinitely by a detailed discussion of the methods of valuation for the four different classes of leaseholds which he mentions: (A) "Producing;" (B) "Protective;" (C) "Reserve;" and (D) "Prospective." This classification is probably as good as can be made in practice. In the producing leaseholds in particular it is easy to establish a market price at which these leaseholds should be bought or sold. The question would arise in any case whether or not the leases are connected with a pipe line or the distance from the pipe line. Assuming that a pipe line already taps the property and that gas is already being sold for a certain figure, this price must be multiplied by the number of thousand cubic feet still "in sight" in the ground, from which is to be deducted (a) bonuses, (b) rentals, (c) royalties, (d) cost of drilling, (e) taxes and

Silicosis is today's most important industrial disease and probably dates back to the Stone Age. Since the industrial revolution, increasing attention has been paid to those occupations where mineral dust is present in the air breathed by the workers. For many years it was assumed that the inhalation of all mineral dusts was hazardous. but investigations conducted in several countries pointed the statistical finger of guilt at free silica in any of its numerous physical forms as a dust of outstanding toxicity. Recognition of silica as the chief hazard has resulted in widespread use of the term "silicosis." Depending upon the concentration of finely divided silica dust to which the individual is exposed and the duration of exposure, silicosis may become a disabling condition in from one to thirty years. The structure of the lung and respiratory passages is such that only minute particles of silica can gain entry to the air cells in the lung (5 microns or under are most toxic). When these minute particles gain entry to the lung tissues they stimulate certain protective cells in the lung to multiply at an excessive rate. The cell's undergo inflammatory changes which result in nodular scars and a low-grade inflammation of the lung tissue. These progressive changes in the lung structure gradually encroach

THE name of Swedish charcoal iron will probably bring to the memory of many old consumers an extremely tough and ductile iron which was formerly used in considerable quantities for common blacksmith purposes. To-day very little of this iron goes to such kind of work. Swedish charcoal iron is merely a speciality which is chosen whenever its remark¬able properties can be utilized. By giving a rough sketch of the manufacturing process of Swedish charcoal iron, the character of the iron, its weak as well as its strong points will more easily be understood. Swedish charcoal iron is a wrought iron also known in the United States under the name of Norway iron and Swedish Lancashire iron. The name Norway iron seems to have been attached to the product for the reason that in the earlier days it was generally brought into the States by Norwegian ships. However no iron of this kind is now made in Norway. The reason for the name Swedish Lancashire iron is that the manufac¬turing process emanated from Lancashier in England, the method being generally adopted in Sweden in the years 1831-1850. Today this iron is, with the exception of one plant in the United States, made in no place in the world outside of Sweden.

I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. Wright of Chicago, former Director of the Institute, as chairman. Since that time the committee has been undergoing organization, and held its initial meeting at the Museum offices in Chicago on April 11 and 12. Functioning as consultants to the Geology and Mineral Industries branch of this new institution, the advisory committee is aiding in building an exhibit which will tell the story of geology, mining, and metallurgy to millions of visitors a year. SYSTEMATIC methods of ore-finding are looked to the more as increasing production requires greater supplies of raw materials. Unrelenting search for new sources of supply is necessary, and all the skill of science must be displayed both in methods of discovering and recovering the minerals necessary to the demands of present-day life. To this end most national governments have some sort of a geo- logical survey and there is a growing understanding of the desirability for cooperation between federal and state or provincial organizations and also financial assistance, from state and private universities, mining companies, railroads and manufacturers. Such surveys are now being directed by well trained geologists selected from federal, state and university departments. Large-scale maps are being prepared and better geo- logical interpretation made, more thorough chemical and physical examinations are being made and original search is fostered, with the result that successful prospecting is better directed, new mining regions are more likely to be discovered, and the life of. old camps lengthened.

THIS paper is the result of an investigation made in association with Dr. Charles H. Fulton. Early in 1918 a search was started for methods of utilizing, in the manufacture of basic refractories, certain domestic resources in magnesites, dolomites, and magnesian limestones. Much information was collected during that year and during 1919 regarding magnesite and dolomite deposits. During 1920 and 1921 a research was made into methods of calcining dolomite and separating magnesia therefrom. Some success was attained and many new ideas were brought out in connection with the preparation and utilization of magnesia in the form of "caustic" or light-burned material as well as in the form of refractory or "dead-burned" material. Stimulated by this success, much advance has been made in manufacturing processes for the "plastic magnesia," so called, used for magnesia cement, stucco, flooring and otherwise in the structural industries.

THE Cartersville mining district, 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, Ga., has been of varying but continuous importance in the southern mineral industry during the past century. Noted chiefly for its production of brown iron ore, manganese oxide ores, barite, sienna, and magnesian limestone, the district and its environs have produced brick and tile clays, slate, gold, bauxite, and graphitic schist. Minor deposits of serpentine, sericite schist, copper ore, and red iron oxide have been prospected. The obvious deposits of brown iron ore, together with some associated specular hematite, were mined out years ago, although a little ore was left in the workings. Moderately steady production of sienna reached a peak about 1930, then declined rapidly. Manganese mining passed through a relatively active period from the World War to 1931, but has subsided to a small but rather constant output for the Birmingham market. How-ever, the White Manganese Corporation has prepared for possible increased production by constructing a new washer capable of handling about 300 tons of ore per day. Principal activity in the district proper has centered for some years in the production of barite and magne-sian limestone.

The historical development of the concept of contact angle hysteresis is reviewed. The measurements of contact angles reported in literature have all been made under static conditions. For the measurement of dynamic advancing and receding contact angles, four methods are described together with an evaluation of their precision. Three of these methods were adapted from devices already used for the measurement of static contact angles. The fourth method uses a new principle and apparatus and is the most accurate. While the relationship between surface tensions and the contact angle was extablished as early as 1805 by T. Young,' it was only in 1890 that the existence of contact angle hysteresis was reported by Lord Rayleigh. His observations, however, remained almost unnoticed. With the invention of froth flotation, the contact angle and its behavior became the subject of investigation. In 1907, L. Sulman and collaborators investigated the cause of discrepancies between recorded values of contact angles. They found that certain variations existed in most cases, but that definite maximum and minimum values of contact angles are obtainable. The difference between the maximum and the minimum contact angle in a given system was termed "hysteresis" by Sulman. First attempts to explain hysteresis were made by E. Edser. T HOUGH Ira B. Joraletnon has not had an eastern address since 1907, he is a New Yorker by birth, having been born at Antwerp, in the northern part of the state, on July 27, 1884. He got his scholastic training at Harvard, which gave him his A.B. degree in 1905 and an A.M. two years later. For the next fifteen years except for the war period, he was with the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., with headquarters at Warren, Ariz., being assistant man- ager when he left that company in 1922. During the first World War he spent a year and a half in France, where he achieved the rank of major in the signal corps, air division.

DURING the past year a survey was conducted by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to determine whether the program as laid down in past years was operating effectively. It is a source of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to report considerable headway among operating companies in putting cooperative scholarship plans into operation. In previous committee reports the pioneer work along this line by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., has been cited. That Company now has in its employ, in responsible positions, three men who received their education under such scholarship plans. One student under a similar plan is now studying at the Colorado School of Mines.

INCREASED metal consumption throughout the world in the past three years has brought greater activity in the concentrators and mills that treat the ores.' Comparatively low prices have made greater economies necessary, with a continuing search for more efficient flow sheets, equipment, processes, and reagents. Comminution GRINDING has long been too ex- pensive and even any small increment of saving has been eagerly sought. Although not recently new the use of rod mills to cover the gap between intermediate crushing and coarse grinding has made further headway. They eliminate dusting and the closed- circuit operation of fine crushers, either roll or Symons cone, and the rod-mill product is suitable for secondary mills which can be operated with smaller balls and iron liners instead of coarse balls and steel liners. The newer practice is radically different from the older application of rod mills where they at- tempted to use them instead of ball mills for fine grinders. For that purpose they were not well adapted, as they do not have sufficient grinding surface available per cubic foot of mill volume.

In May, 1919, a crosscut on the 1400-ft. level of the Briggs mine, a Calumet, & Arizona property at Bisbee, Ariz., penetrated a deposit of pyrite and chaleopyrite that had replaced quartzite and limestone and was cut, especially in the quartzite, by numerous fractures. As the drift advanced through these fractured portions, they were found to be free from copper-sulfate minerals although '(sooty" chalcocite was present in the fractures and also as coatings and replacements of pyritc. Howcver, sulfate soon made its appearance in certain fractures, filled them, and began to form stalactites. Several centers of incipient growth were noted for subsequent study, observations in the drift at frequent intervals during the past 17 months affording the opportunity of determining the rate of formation of the stalactites. The one to attain the greatest growth during the period of observation measured 27 in. long and averaged 1 in. in diameter. A close study showed it to be composed of small interlocked crystals of chalcanthite radiating from a small central tube-like opening. The trielinic form of the crystals was evident with prism and pinacoid faces recognixable. Assuming that the supply of copper-sulfate solution was constant (luring the 17 months—-and such an assumption is supported by the fact that the number of drops of excess solution falling, per minute, from the tip of the stalactite at the times of observation checked closely—thc stalactite, it has been estimated, grew at the rate of 1.58+ in. per month. Another grew at the rate of 3/8 in. in the same time. In the case cited by Mr. Mitchell, the growth was about 136 in. in three weeks. A year ago we had an instance of the formation of cubes of galena on a railroad spike.
