at temperatures of 1150°, 1250°, and 1350°C for liquid copper sulphides ranging in composition from saturation with Cu to about 21.5 pct S. From the experimental data, activities of Cu, S, and Cu2S in the melts were calculated. Also, the results furnish a new determination of the location of the curve showing the compositions of Cu-saturoted sulphide melts in the CU-S constitution diagram. THE "white metal" made as an intermediate L product in converting copper matte to blister copper is a matte approximating Cu2S in composition. It has long been known that liquid Cu-S mattes can exist at a given temperature over an appreciable composition range, with S:Cu ratios ranging up from a lower limit corresponding to equilibrium of the matte with a liquid Cu phase. The Cu-saturated matte has somewhat less S than Cu2S, although previous measurements of the compositions of Cu-saturated mattes are not in good agreement.'" As the S:Cu ratio approaches and slightly exceeds that for Cu2S, the partial pressure of sulphur gas over the liquid matte rapidly approaches atmospheric pressure,5 so that Cu-S melts with much more S than Cu2S can be made and handled only in pressure apparatus. Accordingly, the liquid copper sulphides of interest in copper smelting and readily studied experimentally fall in a relatively narrow composi- tion range about Cu2S. The freezing points of Cu-S mattes show a maximum of 1129°C near the composition Cu, dropping to 1105oC for Cu-saturated mattes having less S and dropping under 1100°C for higher S mattes.' Estimates of the sulphur pressure and other thermodynamic properties of liquid Cu,S were made by Kelley; based on extrapolations from equilibrium measurements on solid Cu,S. More recently, Cox and coworkers' studied equilibria in the reaction: Cu,S + H, e 2Cu + H,S over the temperature range 700" to 1250°C. They measured equilibrium H2S:H2 ratios presumably with both the sulphide and the metal phase present, so that their data above the melting point of Cu,S should measure the S pressure of Cu-saturated sulphide melts. The sulphur pressures of liquid copper sulphides of several S:Cu ratios at their freezing points can be estimated from data given by Posnjak, Allen, and Merwin." However, beyond these few data, no systematic study seems to have been made of the relations of sulphur pressure and other chemical properties of liquid copper sulphides to composition and temperature. Ge-Si N-N heterodiodes hare been built recently which show promise as high-speed logic devices. Low-resistivity germanium is deposited on silicon substrates held at temperatures above the germanium melting point and an alloyed heterojunction formed. The diodes are fabricated from this material using conventional mesa techniques. Over-all device qualify has been greatly improved by the use of epitaxial silicon substrates, that is, a subsirale consisting of a film of thin, high -resistivity silicon on a thicker Piece of low-resistirily silicon crystal. A semimpirical device design equation has been devised which predicts switching performance fairly well within the range of resistivitics and geometries employed. Switching times 01 0.9 ns and PIV 's of —20 v are typical of the better 10-ma diodes. Switching times as low as 0.5 ns have been observed for 10-ma diodes and as low as 2.8 ns for 200-ma diodes. With further development it should be possible to improve switching speed by a factor of four. IN our laboratory, Ge-Si heterodiodes have been built recently which show promise as high-speed logic devices. The diodes have been built using a process reported in some detail in an earlier publication.' The process in short involves alloying a thin film of low-resistivity germanium into a silicon substrate. the germanium having been transported and deposited by the well-known Theuerer halide reduction process.2 This process contrasts with that reported earlier by Oldham who used an essentially conventional direct epitaxial deposition technique.3 Oldham's process, unlike ours, requires cleavage of the silicon sample inside the reactor furnace the instant prior to deposition. Our process has the advantage of yielding large-area macro-scopically plane heterojunctions. Heterodiodes in general have several interesting properties. Without attempting to summarize the theory of heterojunctions.4 two of these properties which have direct relevance should be mentioned. First, N-.V and P-P heterojunction diodes rectify alternating current. Provided that either the band gap or the electron affinity of the two materials is different (which in general is the case), electronic barriers will exist in the junction band structure. When the device is sufficiently forward-biased, the barriers shift so as to permit current flow, and when it is reverse-biased. the barriers block current flow. Second, for N-N and P-P heterodiodes. the foward-conduction process involves majority carriers only. Consequently. when such a device is turned off. there is no minority-carrier storage and hence the diodes switch on and off quite rapidly. As we have reported earlier. N-P and N-N Ge-Si heterodiodes have been built in this laboratory. As one would predict from theory, the N-P heterodiodes were rather slow in turning off while the N-N's were quite fast. Similarly, the turn-off time of the N-P's increased rapidly with forward current while that of the N-N's was independent of forward current. Both N-N's and N-P's were moderately photosensitive. Photocurrents resulting from normal room illumination were as high as 1 µa at 1 v for small-area devices. The most disappointing parameter of the early N-N devices was reverse leakage.' The reverse characteristic was invariably "soft" and leakage at only several volts reverse bias was intolerable. The reverse characteristic was greatly improved by using higher-resistivity silicon substrates. Leakage becomes large at voltages about one third of the avalanche voltage one would expect of a P-N homo-junction formed on silicon of the same resistivity. Thus leakage could be reduced to reasonable limits by using unconventionally high-resistivity silicon. Medium-power diodes formed on 30 ohm-cm substrates leaked typically 15 to 50 µa at 100 v reverse bias. The use of high-resistivity silicon substrate material, however, created a new problem. In order to have an acceptable forward-conductance characteristic. the area of the diodes had to be increased. With this increase in area, the capacitance increased. Switching time for N-N heterodiodes is essentially a linear function of capacitance. Thus when the resistivity was raised. so was the switching time. AN interesting feature among the mining structures, on the Mesabi. iron range is the iron ore stacker erected in 1934 at the Mesabi Chief washing plant at Keewatin, Minn. It is built of structural steel, and carries a system of belt conveyors which collects the washed product of the plant and places it on a stockpile for subsequent shipment. Although the only one of its kind in the Lake Superior iron district, installations of similar nature have been used elsewhere in the handling of coal and gravel and in earthwork construction. The reasons for stocking Lake Superior iron ores may be as various and diversified as the methods used in building the piles. At the under¬ground mines the existence of the huge piles in evidence at each active shaft is due, principally, to climatic conditions in this north country where the shipping period is much shorter than the operating season. Conversely, at the washing. plants it may be desirable to stockpile washed ores because the shipping season is commonly of longer duration than the period during which the plants may be operated. The use of the bag-house for filtering out fumes produced in certain metallurgical operations is not new in America. There are no patents in force at this time, to my knowledge, which might hinder such use. Up to about 25 years ago the bag-house was only employed in connection with either zinc-works, which produced the oxides, to be sold for paint, or as an auxiliary in extracting lead from high-grade oxidized ores and from galena-concentrates in the Missouri and neighboring lead-regions; this work being then done in the Scotch or American hearths and in very low slag-furnaces, in all of which was produced an excessive amount of oxides which were also finally sold as paints. The literature1 on the above is abundant in text-books and periodical publications. The first large bag-house to be used permanently in connection with lead blast-furnaces was erected, as far as I am aware, about 1887 at the Globe smelting Co.'s works at Denver, Colo., under the Lewis-Bartlett patents. MUCH has been published on the general subject of metal mine ventilation but, so far as I can discover, few specific data on selection of fan equipment to meet the requirements of a given mine ventilation problem are available. This article is intended to point out some of the more important considerations which influence the selection of such equipment. It will be assumed that the mine operator is able to determine the quantity of air which is necessary in the various parts of his mine to produce the required results and the pressure in inches water gage needed to circulate this quantity of air through the mine. There may be instances in which this assumption is not justified, but the fact remains that, with proper engineering talent, these data can be approximated sufficiently close for practical purposes.

The Great or Cumberland Valley, which (under a variety of names) extends from Canada, through Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and East Tennessee, to Alabama, is composed in part of limestones lying immediately above the Potsdam sandstone. Geologically, they belong to the era between the Potsdam and Trenton, and are commonly termed Calciferous. A peculiarity of these limestones is their great richness in limonite or brown hematite ores, which form a large part of the charges of the many blast-furnaces situated on their outcrops. The mines from which the ores are obtained are (properly speaking) only pits or quarries, from which 'the ore is extracted by means of picks or shovels, powder being rarely employed. The ore does not occur casually at any point in the limestone, but forms regular lines, following apparently the outcrops of certain beds. In Lehigh County, Penn., where 1 have been engaged on the Geological Survey of the State, during the past season, there are three or four of these lines. During the progress of the survey I was much struck by the fact that the two most important and promising lines of outcrop were, one at the base of the crystalline schists (forming the South or Lehigh Mountain), and overlying the Potsdam sandstone conformably; the other, near the line of junction of the calciferous limestone with the slates of the Cincinnati epoch. The mines along these two lines, following the topography of the country, were in place, richer and more permanent than those of the belts between, which were generally leaner. A peculiarity of these two lines of outcrop, and one to which I particularly desire to draw attention, is the occurrence of what I at first mistook for a highly altered slaty limestone, but which subsequent analysis proved to consist in great part of damourite (hydrated potash mica). The conventional short-time tensile test provides a reliable means of predicting the sustained load-carrying capacity of steels only when the temperature is such that continuous plastic flow does not occur. At elevated temperatures, stresses considerably less than the short-time rupture value may produce continuous flow, with fracture occurring only after long periods of time. The amount of flow or creep accompanying failure varies for different steels, and depends, to a large extent, on the temperature and the duration of the test. Service records of cracking stills, steam superheaters and high-temperature boilers have shown that brittle fractures sometimes occur with little or no warning. In installations of this type, localized stresses are often encountered, and steels must be capable of withstanding a certain amount of deformation without fracture. The sustained-load rupture test determines the expected life and corresponding ductility of steels at various stresses and temperatures. It also yields additional information regarding the effect of micro-structure and metallurgical stability on the high-temperature properties. Present Status of Sustained-load Rupture Test The sustained-load rupture test conducted at elevated temperatures is not entirely new. Dr. Zay Jeffriesl presented in 1919 the results of a large number of rupture tests made on copper, iron and tungsten. These tests were made with various strain rates and at temperatures ranging from the boiling point of liquid air to 1000° C. At that time he observed the interesting phenomenon characteristic of metals, that a temperature exists below which a metal is ductile and breaks with a transcrystalline fracture (through the grain) and above which the metal is brittle and breaks with an intergranular fracture (through the grain boundaries). He observed that this temperature varied with the testing speed, and that a minimum temperature, slightly above the recrystallization temperature, existed at which the cohesion of the grains themselves was

Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done ? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on t,his subject, and the results seem to furniih an answer to the question propounded above. Sampling for the U. 8. Geological Survey Coal- Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal, in car-load lots only, would be accepted for testing; also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sample from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N W. Lord of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Samp1ing.—Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations adopted for mine-sampling mas, that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine.

FIFTEEN thousand barrels of oil daily, the production of the United States 75 years ago, amounted to more than 90 per cent of world supply. Russia and Romania, neither of which produced as much as one thousand barrels daily, were the only other suppliers in substantial quantity. The adolescent oil industry of the United States, a dozen years old in 1871, was still confined to the Appalachian region. Wells were drilled by cable tools; many of them were "kicked down" by manpower with a spring pole; and depths were measured in hundreds rather than thousands of feet-a 1000-foot well was a deep well. Casing was an innovation, come into general use only a few years previously and still so new as to be subject to bitter patent litigation. Crude oil was packaged in wooden barrels and shipped by flat boat and barge on the creeks and rivers and by railroad. Such pipe lines as existed were only a few miles long. There were many refineries. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and the Atlantic seaboard were refining centers. Refineries were very small, however, and their operations consisted essentially in simple fractionation by distillation and treating for quality. The products in demand were burning oil or kerosene and lubricating oils. Oil was not yet used as fuel and gasoline was a nuisance to the refiner.

This paper describes results obtained on aluminum-beryllium alloys and aluminum-beryllium-copper alloys in the preparation of which aluminum of 99.95 per cent. purity was used. The constitution and structure of the high purity binary alloys are given. The aluminum-beryllium eutectic occurs at 0.87 per cent. beryllium and 645° C. The solid solubility of beryllium in aluminum at 631° C. is 0.05 per cent, beryllium, and at room temperature is less than 0.013 per cent. beryllium. The densities of the alloys are substantially the same as the values calculated on the assumption that the densities of the elements are not changed by alloying. All of the alloys age-harden at room temperature after a solution heat treatment, and the chill cast aluminum-beryllium-copper alloys age-harden at room temperature without a prior solution heat treatment. Hardness and tensile properties are given. Salt spray corrosion tests on sheet specimens are described. It is shown that beryllium docs not lower the corrosion resistance of aluminum to salt spray provided the alloy has received a solution heat treatment. Commercial Possibilities of Beryllium Alloys Beryllium has certain properties such as low density, high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and fairly good electrical conductivity, which would indicate that it is worthy of consideration as an ingredient of light alloys. It was not until recently, however, that beryllium could be produced with sufficient ease to encourage research along this line. The production of beryllium by electrolysis from a fluoride bath has now developed to the stage where it could be used commercially if there were sufficient demand for the element. Claims made in certain newspapers and technical articles in regard to thc strength and corrosion resistance of thc aluminum-beryllium alloys are not justified by experimental results. Moreover, beryllium is an expensive metal ($200 a pound at the time this work was done) and, on account of the nature of its ore and the consequent difficulty of its extraction, it will in all probability continue to be a relatively expensive metal, although the cost would undoubtedly be a great deal less than $200 a

This paper describes the equipment for the point anchored rock bolts as well as the full column cable bolts. Modifications in design and testing of all components and procedures has ensured a safe and efficient method of ground support for the mining conditions existing at the Thompson Mine.

Although Greater New York does not bear any resemblance to a great mining district, the mining operations that are being conducted in and about the city are both extensive and interesting in character. With regard to the extent, it may be mentioned that, at present, there is more dynamite used in New York than in any mining district in the United States; that there are under construction about 38 miles of tunnel, and that 66 miles more are projected, most of which must be constructed .in the near future; that since 1903 at least 2,000,000 tons of earth has been removed in underground work, in addition to about 3,500,000 tons that has been removed in open-cut in connection with tunnel-work, and many times this quantity that has been removed in excavating foundations for buildings not connected with tunnel-work; and that there are to-day probably more than 5,000 men engaged in mining-work in and about New lrork City. These undertakings include almost every operation connected with underground work, from exploration by means of trench and boring, to the sinking of large shafts and the driving of large tunnels through every kind of ground from hard rock to soft, semi-fluid silt and quicksand. It is proposed in this paper to give a general description of some of the methods and appliances used in the opening-up of a " mine " in a large city, and a brief description of some of the &'mines" now being developed in New York, connecting as far as possible the methods described with the particular work for which they were designed, in order to give a general idea of the

Bennie, General Manager of the Shannon Copper Co., Clifton, Ariz., 'it has been my valued privilege to cooperate in the elaboration of a hydrometallurgical process aiming at the recovery of copper in mill tailing resulting from a gravity concentration of a low-grade semi-oxidized sulphide ore occurring in a porphyritic gangue. The experimental work which has been carried on with a 25-ton plant is completed, and the company is building at present a leaching plant on a larger scale, the first unit consisting of a 150-ton roasting furnace and accessories for leaching the calcine.

The term solution loss is discussed and defined. Examples are given showing that solution loss may either have a favorable or unfavorable effect on blast furnace performance. A theory is advanced explaining the contradictions encountered during earlier studies of the problem. MANY papers have been written and numerous theories advanced concerning the chemical reactions in the iron blast furnace. Richards, discussing the utilization of fuel in the blast furnace, said: "All the carbon burnt in the furnace should be first oxidized at the tuyeres to CO and all the reduction of oxides above the tuyeres should be caused by CO, which thus becomes CO,. This dictum is not Gruner's own words, but expresses their sense, and from the point of view of the present discussion, it is the correct principle upon which to obtain the maximum generation of heat in the furnace from a given weight of fuel." Richards also said the cubic feet of wind per pound of coke does not express how efficiently a furnace is running, but it will be shown later where Howland paid much attention to this figure. Richards pointed out a shortcoming of Grun-er's discussion in that Richards claimed there is not enough CO generated in a good working blast furnace to possibly combine with the oxygen of the ore, so some of it must be reduced by solid carbon. Mathesius2 made two important contributions. First, he wrote the direct and indirect reduction equations showing the heats of formation in each case and stressed that the indirect reduction reaction produces heat while direct reduction absorbs heat. Secondly, he substantiated Richards' conclusion that there may be a deficiency of CO gas and that some direct reduction is required, but he pointed out that "direct reduction in the hearth has often been confused with direct reduction in the stack, which more correctly should be termed 'premature combustion'." Then he said that "as this carbon is consumed partly by economical (direct reduction in the hearth) and partly by wasteful reactions in ever varying proportions, it is evident that the relation of this total carbon gasified above the tuyeres to the fuel consumption of a furnace cannot possibly have a direct bearing on the economy of furnace operation. The premature combustion of carbon (CO2+C?2CO) must therefore in all cases be considered a detrimental reaction." Johnson3 discussed this whole problem. Through experience Johnson found that when departure from Gruner's ideal working is considerable, the fuel economy is poor, and when the quantity of blast goes up, the fuel economy goes up in the same proportion. Johnson said that the wind per pound of coke is a measure of fuel economy, which will be shown to be wrong. Howland4 established the fact from operating data that there was no relationship between the coke consumption of a furnace and the percentage of coke burned at the tuyeres. But some of his calculations have led to questionable conclusions, such as "it is practically impossible to obtain low coke consumption unless we keep our wind low." Howland made an important contribution when, in his concluding paragraphs, he reached certain negative decisions as to why one coke works better than another. He said the reason one coke works better than another in a blast furnace is not because: 1—there is any difference in the percentage gasified at the tuyeres, or 2—there is any difference of wind required per pound of coke. Korevaar5 propounded a new theory on combustion which disagrees with Gruner because "as far as we can see, this is sufficient proof for the invalidity of Gruner's ideal, for if it was valid, the Low coke consumption should always be accompanied by a higher percentage of carbon burned at the tuyeres. This not being the case, we must deliberately give up our belief in Gruner's ideal." The part in italics will be proved to be wrong. Martin" contended that there was not enough reducing capacity in the blast furnace unless solution loss occurs. He came to a series of conclusions, such as: 1—The greatest efficiency of the blast furnace may not be attained when the reduction is performed entirely by carbon monoxide as demanded by Gruner's definition of the ideally perfect working of the blast furnace. 2—The so-called solution loss reactions, which should more properly be termed direct reduction reactions, promote furnace efficiency. 3—In modern blast furnace practice, the carbon consumption of the process is determined primarily by the carbon needed for reduction purposes, any thermal deficiency created by the reduction process being balanced in practice by the use of blast heat. From a practical standpoint further discussion of the theory of chemical reactions is of little moment. There is however one phase of the general theory of chemical reactions which is very important and that is the combustion of coke in the blast furnace. The Knudsen cell has been employed to determine the free energy of formation of Mn7Cs in the temperature range 800" to 950°C. A value of 66,440 cal was found for hH°o for a-manganese. Measurements of the pressure of manganese over a mixed carbide, (Fe,Mn),C, points to a power relationship between aun7cs and N.4,. RECENTLY Kuo and Perssonl have reported that the carbide of manganese which is in equilibrium with graphite at temperatures up to 1100° C is Mn7Ca. There are no published data on the thermo-dynamic properties of this compound. In order to determine the stability of Mn7Ca, it appeared that, by obtaining the pressure of manganese above 8-manganese and also above Mn,C, in equilibrium with graphite, the free energy of formation of Mn7Ca from 8-manganese and graphite could be obtained. In addition, the vapor pressure of manganese, reported by Kelley From data of Bauer and Brunner,' is subject to some uncertainty and further determinations of the vapor pressure of manganese seemed warranted. In this investigation of the pressure of manganese vapor above pure manganese and also above the carbide of manganese in equilibrium with graphite the apparatus used is the Knudsen orifice cell. The same apparatus, experimental procedure, and method of calculating the pressure was used in this investigation as in one previously reported.~ Care was taken to insure that the cells were at constant weight before using them in a run. The manganese charged in the cell was CP grade powder, carbon free, obtained from the Fisher Scientific Co. A spectroscopic analysis of the manganese after appreciable amounts of it had vaporized from the Knudsen cell showed that no element was present in sufficient quantities to contribute to a weighable weight loss or to decrease the vapor pressure of manganese to any appreciable extent. The spectro-graphic analysis was 0.002 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.002 pct Pb, and 0.002 pct Ni. 8-manganesea is the allo-tropic form of manganese which was present in the cell at temperatures used in this investigation. The manganese carbide, Mn,Ca, was made in the following way: In a closed graphite cell manganese powder was added to graphite powder, which was made from graphite rods for spectrographic use. The manganese powder was the same as that described previously; 5 pct excess graphite was added over that required for the formation of Mn7C,. The mixture was heated in a closed graphite cell for approximately 20 hr at 1350°K under vacuum. X-ray analysis revealed that there was no manganese present after this treatment, but that the lines due to Mn,C, were present. In order to prove that there was no volatile carbide of manganese which was effusing out of the cell, the following experiment was performed: A graphite effusion cell containing graphite power, in excess of that to form Mn,C, of a desired amount, was brought to constant weight on heating at 1228°K. The required amount of manganese was accurately weighed and then added to the graphite effusion cell. The cell was placed in a vacuum at 1228°K for one week, which was the time calculated for the manganese to have effused completely, assuming instantaneous formation of Mn,C8. The cell was then weighed again. This experiment was carried out on two different occasions and both times the weight loss of the cell came within 1 pct of the weight of manganese originally charged minus the weight of manganese left in the cell, as determined by chemical analysis. These data are summarized in Table I. This agreement is considered to be within experimental error and is taken as proof that no carbide of manganese is volatile in this temperature range. It was established, by X-ray analysis, that Mn,C, formed before appreciable amounts of manganese vaporized from the metal powder which was charged. The identification of the carbide of manganese which was present in the Knudsen cell in equilibrium with graphite and manganese vapor was carried out by Kehsin Kuo at the University of Uppsala. While it is true that taxes, especially income taxes, whether they be federal, state, or local, are not usually thought of as a "cost" of doing business, it is equally true that these tax costs do reduce the distributable profits just as much as the cost of power, supplies, or labor. Therefore, the consideration given to taxes is often as important as that given to other costs. Hopefully you will recognize that, within certain limits, taxes can be controlled to an economic advantage. The tax laws as now imposed are quite complex. Many of these laws and the regulations thereunder involve many factual determinations, technical considerations, and specialized valuations that can best be made by people trained in the specific area concerned. A substantial amount of a tax liability turns on the proper consideration given to issues involving facts and principles which are peculiarly engineering in nature. The importance of these "engineering" issues in tax administration has been significantly increased in recent years by our rapidly advancing technology, automation, stepped-up mineral and oil exploitation, new industries such as electronics and nuclear power, and the extension of percentage depletion to all minerals. These specialized requirements incorporated in the law are so technical that full consideration can not be given by people with a non-engineering background.

NOT the least interesting sights that New York has to offer the visiting mining engineers are the extensive tunnel operations that are being pushed in connection with the subway construction. While a "hard rock" man might feel at home on these jobs, the engineers driving the subway tunnels have necessarily had to encounter some new problems pe-culiar to the largest permanent mining camp in the country. To drive a heading 36 by 18 ft. in hard rock, with a station section to follow 52 by 27 ft. across-and to do it in the midst of a city's traffic-demands engineering skill of a high order. Not the least of the problems overcome by the engineers in charge was to provide adequate ventilation for the men at the face at all times, so that there would be no delay in the work. With a crew of 40 men (32 drill runners and helpers on the machines alone, working two shifts) a hold-up due to inability to get back promptly to the face after shooting would affect costs quickly. AIR VITIATED BY EXHAUST FUMES FROM MOTOR TRUCKS A complication not encountered by metal miners, but which the subway engineers had to meet, was pollution of the air in the tunnels by fumes from the exhaust of the motor trucks used to haul away the broken rock. As shown in the cut, motor trucks were constantly em-ployed to remove the heavy tonnage broken as the tun-nels went ahead, amounting, according to R. J. Van Wagner, chief engineer of the Del Balso Construction Co., to 48 cu. yd. per ft. of tunnel advance. As the length of the tunnel under his management was 900 ft., it was essential for the safety of the men that suffi-cient air be introduced to dilute the poisonous fumes so that no ill effects would be felt for the entire distance that the trucks had to travel. The presence of the ex-haust fumes was especially noticeable on foggy days.

The proration of oil produced in the field frequently is based partially or entirely upon the gas-oil ratio of wells. The measurement of the gas-oil ratio is one of the more important field tests in regulatory and pro-ration work, and the test always should be conducted according to standardized methods and procedure. Obviously, the gas-oil ratio and the volume of gas produced by a well depend upon many factors but should be independent of the method of measurement and of the devices used to measure gas and oil. Consequently, the volume of gas accompanying a barrel of oil produced by a well may be measured by any reliable and accurate device or instrument. Frequently either a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is used for this purpose, and for a particular well the same rate of flow of gas should be obtained regardless of whether a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is employed in the test. In Texas, when using either instrument, either Capacity Table 1 or 5' is employed in making the necessary computations. If the tables are used, a discrepancy always is found whenever the two instruments are compared by extrapolation to the same conditions of flow. Clearly, Tables 1 and 5 must be at fault in some respects. The orifice well tester and the Bureau of Mines type of critical flow prover are essentially the same instrument; both devices utilize a square-edged orifice 1/8 in. in di-ameter as the primary element, and both freely discharge gas to the atmosphere. Tables for the orifice well tester' have been published in the ranges of 0 to 15 in, of water and 0 to 40 in. of mercury (Hg) differential in pressure. Coefficients for the critical flow prover have been published for differentials in pressure greater than 75 psia. An extrapolation of either differs from the other set of data as much as 18 per cent at some points. No immediately obvious reasons for the discrepancy was found, and data available from the literature were insufficient to effect reconciliation. Consequently, a series of experiments was performed to check the available data and to determine discharge coefficients for the two devices in an overlapping range of differential pressure. The correlating equation used in preparation of tables such as Tables 1 and 5' is the so-called hydraulic equation, Q = C1 vh .....(1) The tables cover orifice sizes from 1/8 through 1 1/4 in. A second set of tables, for use with greater differentials in pressure, apply only to the 3/4, 1, and 1 1/4-in. orifice plates over a pressure range of 0 to 40 in. of Hg. The correlating equation used in preparation of the tables is Q = C2 vH(29.32 + 0.3H)/G . (2) Each of these equations is valid only for the range to which it has been applied, and neither equation is valid for extrapolation. Theoretical equations for flow through an orifice are based upon assumptions of fractionless flow and an emergent jet the size of the orifice. A multiplier, C,, called the discharge coefficient, is inserted into the theoretical expression to compensate for both frictional losses and the contraction of the jet experienced in the plane of the orifice. Buckingham3 shows that C, should vary with the ratio of upstream to downstream pressure for flow of a compressible fluid at any average linear velocity through the orifice less than the velocity of sound. Work published by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics4 indicates that the variation continues into the so-called critical flow region until the vena contracta coincides with the plane of the orifice. The NACA work, however, does not indicate a leveling off of the coefficient. The work of the Bureau of Mines5 for the critical flow prover was based on differential pressures greater than 75 psi and indicates that the discharge coefficient, Cd, is constant in this region at a value of about 0.86.
