THE purpose of testing is to determine whether the material in question is identical in all essential respects with similar material which has given satisfactory service. The most common method of securing such information is to select samples as representative of the entire material and subject them to destructive tests. As the welding industry grew, service data were accumulated and tests of welds took on new significance. New tests were devised and old tests modified so as to be more pertinent to welding. Moreover, in some cases the generally accepted procedure of testing by sampling is not accorded the same degree of confidence when applied to welds as in the usual applications. Thus, in instances where great hazard would be involved should the material fail, means of non-destructive testing have been sought with favorable results. Accordingly, tests used today may be divided into two groups, destructive and non-destructive tests.

In the early 1950's the cement industry began putting a new emphasis on geology. This article points up some of the industry's raw materials problems that geologists are uniquely qualified to handle. Portland cement can be made from relatively abundant industrial minerals and rocks, and this may explain why cement producers placed little emphasis on geology during the early days of the industry. After World War 11, however, the industry began to recognize the need for geological exploration and some of the larger companies began to build a permanent geological staff. This development has its roots in: 1) The rapid expansion of the industry. After World War II and continuing into the early 1950's the demand for cement far exceeded the production capacity. This placed a great deal of pressure on the producers to enlarge capacity at their plants and to develop new sites. 2) The closing of many cement plants due to inadequate raw materials. Producers feared lack of raw materials due to inadequate exploration and evaluation. 3) An ever increasing pressure for upgrading of the quality of portland cement, necessitated upgrading the quality of raw materials. 4) The increasingly large capital investment needed to build new cement plants required a higher degree of accuracy in reserve calculation. These reasons are more or less self explanatory and will not be elaborated on. They are outlined to illustrate the probable evolution of thought among cement management to justify the development of a geological staff. In the author's personal experience the geologist must continually readjust to changing conditions within the industry. For example, cement production capacity grew so rapidly that today production is only about 70% to 75% of rated capacity (73.8% in 1963). Therefore, whereas the geologist's function during the active expansion of capacity was primarily one of exploration, one of his major functions today is the development of existing reserves. This assumes of course that reserves at existing plants have been proven to be adequate in terms of the company's reserve policy. Through the proper development of raw materials, the geologist can markedly influence quality control, production and long range planning. Examples of several of the operations of Medusa Portland Cement Co. will illustrate how proper attention to geologic detail pays off in the above areas. Because limestone is the major raw material of port-land cement, the examples will be concerned with it. DEVELOPMENT OF GEOLOGIC DETAIL One of the prime objectives of an exploration or development project should be the establishment of the stratigraphy and structure of the deposit. The basic tool for exploration and development is still the core drill, and the geologist must gain a maximum amount of information from a minimum amount of drilling. In order to obtain this objective the following is essential: 1) Adequate detailed geologic logging of cores. The core is first logged and separated into lithologically distinct units. In order to make the lithologic breaks as meaningful as possible, representative pieces of core (not all) are etched in dilute HCI. This removes the "drill polish", brings out the structure of the rock and indicates the proportion of dolomite and argillaceous material because dolomite and argillaceous material etch in relief. In this way the lithologic breaks become clearer and one gains a general idea of the chemical makeup before analysis. This method of logging lessens the probability of including two types of stone, e.g. limestone and dolomite into the same sample for chemical analysis. 2) Representative sampling for chemical analysis. After logging, the lithologic units are sampled for chemical analysis. A representative analysis can be obtained by extracting a 1-in. sample for every foot of core. For example, a lithologic interval of 10 ft to 20 ft would yield ten 1-in. samples taken at 11 ft, 12 ft, 13 ft... and 20 ft. These samples are then crushed, pulverized and split into a sample for chemical analysis. This sampling method represents a significant saving of time over splitting the entire core. 3) Preparing the core as a record. Because of the expense of storage and the difficulty of handling large amounts of core, only representative samples of each lithologic unit are saved for reference. An

MAINTAINING a satisfactory structure in brass and bronze castings has always been a foundry problem of great practical importance. While metallurgists and scientific investigators have not entirely ignored this matter, it has received less of their attention than has been given to iron, steel and the wrought copper and aluminum alloys. Investigation in this field has probably been discouraged to some extent by the complicated nature of the alloys involved. Hundreds of alloys are in more or less common use, most of them containing copper, zinc, lead and tin in-widely varying proportions. They also contain appreciable percentages of iron and antimony as impurities, and often phosphorus, which has been added as a deoxidizer and fluidifier. Small amounts of sulfur are usually present. It is not uncommon to find nickel, sometimes in rather substantial quantities. Traces of other metals are frequently present. So complicated and variable a mixture obviously offers difficulties in. any investigation of the various factors that influence the structure and other properties of the casting.

ABOUT one hundred were in attendance when Donald M. Liddell opened the session* on non-ferrous metallurgy at 2 p. m. on Tuesday. F. F. Col- cord was vice-chairman. For the first part of the session the chair was turned over to Frank G. Breyer, who introduced G. L. Spencer, Jr., to read his contribution (T.P. 378), "High Silica Retorts at the Rose Lake Smelter," which was an account of the method of manufacture of high-silica zinc retorts at the Rose Lake smelter, and of the service given by these retorts. The materials used are, by volume, 50 per cent clay, 25 per cent silica flour and 25 per cent grog. Written discussion of the paper by E. M. Johnson, W. R. In- galls and M. M. Neale was read by Mr. Breyer. Mr. Johnson explained that their practice in manufacture differed very little from Rose Lake practice, but that their retorts did not last as long, possibly because Eagle-Picher does not use a hydraulic retort press or sintered ore. He ascribes the longer life of silica re- torts to the fact that they do not bend under heat. Mr. Ingalls pointed out that silica retorts are no better as heat conductors than clay retorts, but that they do have a superior rigidity in the furnace. The character of the retorts does not affect the density of the charge. Mr. Neale gave the procedure in the manufacture and use of high-silica retorts at the Donora zinc works, not

Under the impetus of new demands caused by the war, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1942. In all, 1513 test wells were drilled, which is somewhat of a drop from the figure of 2113 for 1941. The 1513 tests yielded 800 new oil wells, 85 new gas wells, and 628 dry holes. Thus there was an increase in two categories, the gas wells and the dry holes. Considering that last year only 592 dry holes were completed out of a much larger total, the figure of 628 dry holes causes some concern among local operators. The increase in unsuccessful tests illustrates once more the fact that each year it is becoming harder to find the remaining oil pools. When the figures are broken down, it appears that western Kansas accounted for 1177 tests, of which 689 were oil wells, 33 gas wells, and 455 dry holes. The total potential daily initial production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 753,178 bbl. of oil and 619,734,000 cu. it. of gas. The figures for new initial production indicate a substantial drop from last year's figure of 1,691,000 bbl., and the figures on gas are slightly higher. In 1941 the new gas as based on a daily potential was 508,000,-000 cu. ft. In eastern Kansas, 336 wells were drilled. Among these in were oil wells, accounting for a daily initial potential production of 16,199 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 52 and added 253,725,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 173 in number, were dry. It is interesting and perhaps significant that about half (630) of the wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies, the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 163 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., 52; the Skelly Oil Co., 39; the Continental Oil Co., 48; and the Shell Petroleum Co., 21 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 297 out of the total of 336 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 19; the Phillips Petroleum Co. 7; and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., 6 wells. The figures based on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas almost one half of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 547 wells in western Kansas, of which 379 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared better than the independents. In eastern Kansas the major companies drilled 39 wells, of which 29 were successful in finding commercial quantities of oil or of gas. No less than 329 wildcat test holes were put down in western Kansas and 105 in eastern Kansas, or 434 in all, during 1942. Considerably more than half of these were drilled by independent operators; 223 in western and 99 in eastern Kansas. An exploratory hole 56 mile or more from production is regarded as a wildcat well in Kansas. On a percentage basis, about 80 per cent of wildcat wells were failures. OVER-ALL operations of the oil industry, as measured by production of crude oil and consumption of products, are almost exactly of the same magnitude as a year ago. Does this mean that the great oil industry has been undisturbed by the war? Has this industry, so vital to the prosecution of the war and to the maintenance of our way of life, been unaffected in its operations? No indeed - changes within the industry are great. It has been called upon to revamp its trans¬portation methods so as to move about one fourth of the total amount of crude and refined products by railroad tank car instead of by ocean-going tankers. Its fundamental internal economy, based on maximum gasoline yield from a barrel of crude, has been relegated to memories of the past. Rationing of oil products, which has been forced upon us in face of an abundant supply, is not only disagreeable medicine but is in itself completely disruptive to the marketing end of the-business.-

A METAL or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

Plating iron with copper has received great attention from practical and scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless a protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.l The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating. Plating Mixture The liquid plating mixture is composed of either copper oxide or finely divided copper, or a mixture of both, ground to the consistency of a light varnish in a crude oil having an asphaltic base, of a specific gravity of from 14" to 16' Be. THIS paper is a report on work undertaken to investigate the results and conclusions of Ravitz and Porter1,2. that galena freed of surface oxidation products and lead carbonate ("clean" galena) is water-repellent, and that the action of xanthates in flotation is the action of a cleansing agent, enabling oxidized galena particles to expose a pure lead sulphide, water-repellent surface. The apparatus, in construction and use, was essentially that of Ravitz and Porter. The only significant modification introduced by the present authors was the substitution of a three-necked flask for the flotation cell as the "reaction vessel." Our procedure was to place 50 grams of freshly ground, minus 200-mesh galena in the reaction vessel, sweep out all molecular oxygen from the system with oxygen-free nitrogen, and proceed to wash the galena surface free of its oxidation products with repeated small portions of (I) ammonium acetate (500 c.c. of water, 200 grams of ammonium acetate) or (2) ammonium chloride, hydrochloric acid (2 liters containing 200 grams of ammonium chloride and 25 c.c. of 1.18 sp. gr. hydro chloric acid). The galena was next washed with many 100-c.c. portions of oxygen-free, distilled water. The galena was finally considered free of soluble salts when wash water that had been in contact with the mineral for at least 48 hr.* gave negative tests for: (I) lead ion with sulphide; (2) chloride with silver ion; (3) acetate with cuprous chloride, sodium chloride; and (4) ammonium ion with Nessler's reagent. Next 500 c.c. of potassium ethyl xanthate solution, free of dissolved oxygen, was run onto the "clean" galena particles. For this system there were determined: I. The wetting properties of the clean galena particles by shaking the reaction flask and noting the degree of mineral collection at the liquid-air interface. This was, of course, simply a qualitative test, but it proved adequate for our purpose. 2. The removal of xanthate ion from the potassium xanthate solution on being shaken with the "cleansed" mineral. Xanthate concentrations were determined by iodine titration according to the methods of Taylor and Knoll.3 3. The pH of the xanthate solution after having been shaken with the "cleansed" galena. The pH was determined colorimetrically.4 The results of five experiments of the type mentioned above are given in Table I.

The United States is supplying by far The greater part of all The petroleum products consumed in Great Britain, France and Italy. In addition To This, we have had To supply a marked increase in our domestic consumption, not only of The refined products, but of fuel oil as well. The combination has put a strain on The oil industry, which it is very difficult To meet. The oil companies, being under contract, had no option as To who should get Their oil first, and They were delivering pro rata To everybody; manufacturers of furniture were getting oil with The same regularity as Those who were making aeroplanes or munitions, and The oil companies felt that something should be done. The first order with which I had. anything To do was The priority list for The delivery of fuel oil. That list contained 12 classifications, beginning with bunker fuel and railroads, and you will realize The complexity of The situation when you hear that munitions plants are in class 11. The priority list held during The winter, but transportation became so bad, because of The number of ships that were Taken for trans-Atlantic use, that some of The oil companies were not able To deliver more Than about 60 per cent. into class 5, and nothing beyond that point. To add To the Troubles, the Tank-car mileage fell off. The average for 1917 was about 36 miles per car per day. in January, 1918, it dropped To about 8 miles, and it must have been nearly zero in The early part. of February. Because of The extremely severe winter, furthermore, pipe lines were not delivering anywhere near Their normal capacity. A new priority list has recently been promulgated, introducing a few slight changes. Natural gas has been brought under its provisions, and it has been extended To include The Pacific Coast, which was not considered necessary last winter. The situation in The gas industry is not satisfactory; it is estimated that There will be a decrease of 10 To 20 per cent. in The quantity of natural gas available This winter, as compared with last winter.

THE MOGOLLON mining district, New Mexico, has received little public attention, although for 15 years it has been the leading silver producer of the state; it is situated in a region remote from the principal lines of travel, and its activities have usually been limited to the operations of two or three companies. The value of the total production of the district in the 44 years of its history has been estimated at $15,000,000. For the years 1904 to 1917, inclusive, the output was: gold, $4,370,000; silver, 10,042,000 oz.; copper, 874,862 lb.; total value, approximately. $10,500,000. In 1913 the district contributed 80 per cent. of the total silver production of New Mexico, but in 1917 only 41 per cent., due to serious interruption in the operations of the leading producer. Since 1914 the silver output has diminished one-half, and the present high value of silver is nearly offset by the increase in cost of production. The output of gold has rarely exceeded 35 per cent, of the total for New Mexico. The ratio of silver to gold, by weight, has averaged 46:1 based on the whole output of the district. LOCATION AND TOPOGRAPHY The town of Mogollon is 75 mi. (121 km.) by a poorly located highway from the nearest railroad terminals, at Silver City and Tyrone. All supplies are transported by motor trucks and teams. The area, sometimes called the Cooney Mining District, lies on the western flank of the Mogollon Mountains, which occupy the western part of Socorro County. The elevations drop steeply on the west to the valley of the San Francisco River, adjacent to the Arizona boundary. The topography is very rugged, the whole area being sharply dissected; deep canyons with steep gradients and rugged walls are characteristic of the whole western-slope of the Mogollon Range. The main canyons run east and west, and usually maintain a flow of water during the entire year. As would be expected in a region of such deep dissection, the

IN recent years, there have been many changes in mining operations in the Lake Superior district. To follow these trends on the Menominee Range of Michigan, information has been assembled from all of the iron informatior]mining operations in the area. There are 15 operating underground mines in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area of the Menominee Range. Within the past two years, two idle properties were reopened pasttwoyears,and are now producing, and a third and fourth are being reopened. Also, there are two siliceous openpits operated by independent companies outside this immediate area. Six companies operate the underground mines, employing some 1850 employees. Table I shows pertinent facts about these properties. During 1949, the largest mine in Iron County shipped 571,287 tons, and one of the newer mines shipped 39,378 tons, with a range total to 3,535,-373 tons. Since the Menominee Range was opened in the 1870's, the mines in Iron County have shipped 85,890,922 tons. From an operator's viewpoint rather than a geologist's, the ore is' classified as semi-hard, composed of hematite and limonite. It is not as soft as the ores of the Marquette Range nor is it as hard as the hard ores of the Marquette and Vermillion Ranges. The ore bodies have slate hanging walls and slate footwalls. In most cases the hanging walls and footwalls are soft and high in sulphur. The sulphur comes from pyrite, and these slates will ignite when piled more than 6 to 8 ft high. Ore is mined on this range by: 1—Sub-level stop-ing; 2—Shrinkage stoping; 3—Sub-level caving; 4— Block caving; 5—Top slicing. The predominance of these methods is in the order named. Underground drilling is important in the mining cycle. Some changes made and trends toward future changes fall into four categories: Drill bits, drill steel, drill machines, and compressed air pressures. Several types of bits have been tried and are in use. They include the detachable tungsten carbide, insert bit; the intraset steel bit, which is a conventional steel rod with tungsten carbide insert; the one-use bit; and the multiple-use bit. For many years, detachable multiple-use bits have been standard. In tests conducted recently to im- prove drilling efficiency, this bit was used as the basis for comparison. Under existing conditions, a multiple-use bit can be resharpened about three times before it is discarded. A thorough test of 2-in. tungsten carbide threaded bits was conducted under various ground conditions. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 48 to 600 ft per bit; averaging 357 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit ranged from 8 to 80 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was greater for the insert bit in each case. 3—The average drilling speed for the insert bit was 12 in. in 62 sec and for the multiple-use bit was 12 in. in 64 sec. In a second test, 2V4 -in. tungsten carbide bits with the large 1 3/16-in. thread were used in moderately soft ground on a 152-lb drifting drill on a long feed jumbo. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 450 to 5000 ft per bit, averaging 1810 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit averaged 64 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was reduced by the use of the insert bit. 3—No increase in drilling speed was recorded. 4—Minimum footage obtained was caused by thread failure. To improve the thread life, thread size on the rod was increased and the bit was attached to the rod with a pipe wrench. After this, bits failed in equal proportions because of cracked skirts, broken inserts, and gage loss. Tungsten carbide bits are now used in the operation where this second test was conducted because labor costs were lowered as a result of reducing the number of bits being changed by the miners. At the same operation and under the same conditions as the second test, 1Y4-in. insert bits with standard 1-in. threads were used. These bits did not drill much more than 300 ft before thread failure and were then welded to the rods and used until total failure. Sometimes this footage was considerable, sometimes it was not. EXPERIMENTAL DATA In an article by C. K. Ferguson and J. A. Klotz,1 experiments on the filtration of drilling muds under borehole conditions are discussed. Experimental data on mud filtration through the wall and the bottom of the hole are presented. From the data on bottom-hole filtration it was concluded that the filtrate does not flow freely into the formation, but that the pores of the formation are plugged by the mud. A quantitative interpretation of the data can be civen, by using a formula for bottom-hole filtration, dehved below. This formula is based on the following assumptions, 1. Each time a blade of a drag bit, or a cone of a roller bit, moves along the bottom of the hole, the mud cake is completely removed. 3. A new mud cake is immediately formed on the freshly produced surface, and losses of "whole" mud into the formation are negligible (this is equivalent to an immediate plugging of the pores). 3. The filtration of the mud on the bottom of the hole follows the classic law: V = A +1—(Eq. I), where t is the time required to yield a volume of filtrate V, A is the surface area of filter cake, and C is a constant. The application of this equation means that any eroding effect of the mud stream on the mud cake is neglected. The formula for the calculation of the volume of filtrate, Q,, flowing in one second through the hole bottom (diam. d cm), when using a bit with n cones or blades rotating at a rate of rn revolutions per second, is derived as follows: The mud cake is formed on the bottom of the hole in the time t =1; the filtrate volume V which passes n through the bottom In this time 1s given by Eq. 1: After1/nmsec the mud cake is removed. In one m second this process takes place nm times. Therefore the volume of filtrate, obtained in one second is given by This equation has now been applied to the experiments of Ferguson and Klotz. The constants C were derived by means of Eq. 1 from the API filter losses of the muds used by the authors (t = 1,800 sec; A = 45.16cm2). A three-cone bit was used (n = 3) at 90 rpm (m = 1.5). The calculated figures are compared with the experimental data in the table below. The calculated values of Q, are usually lower than the experimental values. This may be due to the following causes. 1. The value of C used in the calculation is based on the API filter test (filtration pressure of 100 psi), whereas the experimental data were obtained with a filtration pressure of 200 psi. Although the effect of the pressure on C is not large, C decreases somewhat with increasing pressure, and this leads to a higher filtration rate. 2. Mud losses and the eroding action of the mud stream on the cake are not entirely negligible. 3. The values of Q, derived by Ferguson and Klotz from their experiments are too high, because of their assumption that all pore liquid within the formation drilled is picked up by the drilling mud. It is found, however, that the calculated values of Qf, except in the case of oil base muds, are of the right order of magnitude. Although additions to reserves from new fields and extensions were less than withdrawals during the year, reappraisals of discoveries in 1937 added to new discoreries during 1938 amounted to over 300,000,000 bbl. The following comparative statement shows the important changes in various phases of the industry: Throughout the year the storage situation became progressively more acute, owing principally to less Pacific foreign demand, and increased potential from drilling the newly discovered fields and pools (Fig. 1). California storage increased approximately 32,000,000 bbl. during 1938, most of which (approximately 18,000,000 bbl.) was heavy crude and residuum. The market demand for the year was around 600,000 bbl. per day. Because of the trend toward Diesel power for heavy transportation, the non-gasoline-bearing crudes arc fast becoming a drug on the market. New discoveries were instrumental in increasing the potential production of the state from 1,076,000 bbl. per day in January to an all-time high of 1,420,000 bbl. per day at the close of the year; although the indicated reserves of these new discoveries were not equal to the yearly withdrawal of 249,000,000 bbl. As of the end of 1938, the state was voluntarily curtailed about 58 per cent. As a result of prospecting during the year, six new fields were discovered, three fields were extended, and deeper zones were reached in five of the older fields.

The 128th meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers constituted a two weeks trip through the Great Northland of Ontario and Quebec and was a most memorable occasion. The last visit of the Institute to Canada was made in 1907 when the mines, which now have brought world wide fame to some of the camps, were not yet dis-covered. The party reached its greatest numbers at Porcupine where 167 visitors and nearly one hundred local members participated. Five members of the party from the States were on the previous trip in 1907. They were Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Huntoon, John Stevenson and son and E. F. Eurich. The Minister of Mines for the Province of Ontario attached his private car to the "Mining Engineers' Special" and made the complete trip through Ontario. This was a happy incident in many ways and gave the visitors an opportunity to discover a spirit of mutual accord between the Minister and mining industry that might well be emulated elsewhere. Two compartment cars and one standard Pullman with the Institute members from New York and the metropolitan district were attached special to the 6.15 p.m. Lehigh Valley train from New York, Sunday, Aug. 19, en route to Toronto, where was held the first session of the Institute's 128th Meeting.

DURING January, 1933, burlap or coco matting was placed in the bottom of launders handling various products of the flotation plant of the Magna mill of the Utah Copper Co., with the hope of increasing the total recovery of gold. This was soon followed by placing various materials, such as coco matting, cotton twill, and common 10-oz. burlap on the bottom of the main tailing launder.
