THE Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming, on the Marquette iron- range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. GEOLOGY The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of sec. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40º. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4 ½ miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron formation or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2.87 per cent Al and 0.015 per cent S. On the basis of the metallographic observations, it can be deduced that the segregation observed is representative of the solute segregation produced during crystal growth. Some deductions are also made about the interplay of the two substructures, cells and striations, and about the mode of cellular growth. investigation both experimentally and theoretically. Tin crystals grown from melts containing various concentrations of lead have been most extensively studied. In a recent investigation of Sn-Pb alloys, Kramer et a1.2 were able to measure the effective solute distribution coefficient, k,, at the most advanced points of the solid-liquid interface, over a large range of growth conditions, finding it to approach the value of k,, the equilibrium distribution coefficient. Flow and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even nni-.persal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non-mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manageable simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. THROUGHOUT its development the science of electronics, like so many other branches of science and industry, has been indebted to the metallurgist. Metallurgy has provided the electronic engineer with conductors to furnish passage for electrons outside of his evacuated tubes; it. has developed tungsten and tantalum wires for emitting electrons and various refractory metals and alloys suitable for electrodes, which receive them and guide them within the tube; finally it has supplied ferromagnetic materials both for shielding electronic apparatus from magnetic fields and for forming highly concentrated fields for deflecting electron. Today I hope to show you that electronics has not been altogether ungrateful for this assistance. More specifically, I wish to indicate the role that the electron microscope, a relatively recent product of electronic engineering, is playing even now in the study of metals. Every metallographer is aware that his standard metallographic microscope will not reveal structural detail involving separations smaller than a certain fraction -at the very best a tenth-of a micron. This limitation, he knows, is a consequence of the fact that the wave length of the light employed for forming the image has this order of magnitude. It is, thus, a property of all light microscopes. To overcome it, a different imaging medium must be employed. The existence of such a medium became evident when it was demonstrated' that electrons were affected by magnetic and electric fields with axial symmetry just as light is affected by glass lenses; these fields, or "electron lenses," curve the paths of electrons reaching them from an object located on the axis of symmetry in such a manner that, at some distance from the lens, a true image of the object is formed, Furthermore, although a wave length may be ascribed to electron beams just as to light, this wave length is much shorter; for electrons accelerated through a difference of potential of 50 kilovolts, the wave length is only about one hundred-thousandth of that of visible light: Actually, the electron microscopes of today resolve detail one hundred times as fine as light microscopes; if the maximum useful magnification of the latter is taken to be a thousand, that of electron microscopes is one hundred thousand. THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE Since electrons are readily scattered and absorbed by matter, specimens to be observed in the electron microscope must be prepared to be less than one micron in thickness; furthermore, the interior of the microscope must be carefully evacuated to prevent collisions between the electrons and the molecules of the air. Finally, as already mentioned, the lenses are formed by axially symmetric magnetic or electric fields, and not by any material medium such as glass. The basic structural unit of all silicate minerals is a tetrahedron with a silicon atom at the center and four oxygen atoms at the corners. The oxygen-silicon distance is about 1.6 & and the oxygen-oxygen distance about 2.6 &. The different types of oxygen-silicon frameworks in the various silicates are based entirely on the combinations of the tetra-hedral oxygen-silicon groups through sharing of oxygen atoms. In recent years, infrared spectroscopy has permitted estimation of the ratio of the ionic character of the oxygen-silicon bond to be a few times that of the oxygen-carbon bond and the ratio of electro-negativity of the two bonds has also substantiated this finding. On this basis, it is generally accepted that the oxygen-silicon bond is the strongest one occurring in silicate minerals. As the oxygen-silicon ratio increases from quartz to the olivines, a greater percentage of the oxygen bonding power is available for bonding to cations other than silicon. Hence, with an increasing oxygen-silicon ratio, there is increasing oxygen-to-metal bonding. Upon the fracturing of a silicate mineral crystal, the oxygen-metal bond, which is almost entirely ionic in character, should break more easily than the stronger oxygen-silicon bond, resulting in a greater number of unsatisfied negative forces on the surface. If, then the mineral is immersed in a liquid containing hydrogen ions, these negative forces should tend to be neutralized by hydrogen ions from solution, resulting in a change of the pH of the solution. An increase in the degree of adsorption of hydrogen ions is to be expected as the oxygen-silicon ratio in the crystal structure increases. This study attempted to correlate the oxygen-silicon ratio for various representative silicate minerals to the adsorption of hydrogen ions. Experiments to determine the effect of surface area on this adsorption and to investigate the effect of surface iron were also conducted. It is believed that such studies of the surface properties of silicate minerals will supply pertinent information about their behavior in froth flotation systems. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ion Exchange: Carefully selected, hand-picked samples of the minerals investigated were dry-crushed in a ceramic ball mill and sieved to obtain a minus 100 plus 200-mesh sample. The sized samples were then run through the electro-magnetic separator to remove any iron-bearing particles. A 10-g sample of each mineral was placed in 100 ml of freshly deionized water previously adjusted to a pH of 3.50 with HCl. The beaker containing the sample and the water was placed under a bell jar from which the air was displaced at once by nitrogen gas from a tank. All experiments were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere. The sample and solution were stirred gently but continuously during the entire experiment, the stirring speed being kept about the same for all runs. The effects of aeration on an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite were studied and their results correlated with flotation tests using xanthates as collectors. The effects of copper activation and of pH variation were determined and possible mechanisms postulated. PYRRHOTITE has long been considered a gangue mineral to be eliminated as tailing in the treatment of various sulphide ores. However, in recent years the world-wide lack of sulphur resources has called attention to this mineral as a potential source of both sulphur and iron. Its importance as an economic mineral, however, has not been particularly emphasized. For this reason very little is known about its response to flotation, except that it can be depressed easily in alkaline circuit, by long aeration,1,2 addition of oxidizing agents,3 or by starch.' The object of this work was to study the floatabil-ity of pyrrhotite. This includes the effect of oxidation by aeration, of copper activation, and of change in pH. Preparation of the Pyrrhotite Sample: It was desirable that the highest grade of pyrrhotite obtainable be used for this experiment, since the presence of other minerals could affect the surface properties.5 However, no pyrrhotite was available as crystals, and massive deposits of hydrothermal origin commonly contain considerable amounts of chalcopyrite. Pyrrhotite concentrate was, therefore, prepared from a sulphide deposit occurring near Aitkin, Minn. The deposit is of pyrometamorphic nature consistirlg mainly of pyrrhotite and pyrite with graphite, silicates, and carbonates as gangue. The ore, already crushed through 3 mesh when received, was screened at 65 mesh and the undersize discarded. The oversize was crushed through rolls, and then stage-ground dry in an Abbe porcelain mill, the —65 mesh portion being screened out after every 15 min of grinding until all the material passed through this size. The ground product was then concentrated with a drum-type dry magnetic separator. The rougher concentrate was cleaned twice and then demagnetized. The final product was split in a Jones splitter and stored in air-tight bottles. Microscopic examination of the concentrate showed that it was relatively clean and free of pyrite, locked particles, and gangue. By means of the krypton gas adsorption method," the specific surface was determined to be 3000 cm2 per g. The chemical and screen analyses of the final concentrate are given in Tables I and II respectively. It is a well-recognized fact that the oxidation of some sulphide ores during stockpiling, grinding, and conditioning affects their flotation behavior. The problem of oxidation may become serious in the case of pyrrhotite, since this is known to be more easily oxidized than many other sulphides. To ascertain the extent of oxidation, an experiment was carried out by aerating an aqueous suspension of pyrrhotite with air, oxygen, and nitrogen as follows. A 300-g sample of pyrrhotite in 2700 ml of water was agitated and simultaneously aerated in a Fager-gren-type laboratory flotation machine. A Precision wet test meter was connected to the air inlet valve, the flow rate of the gas being kept constant at 0.3 cu ft per min throughout the experiment. Samples of approximately 30 ml each were taken from the cell at 0, 4, 10, 20, 35, 60, and 90 min. After the pH was taken, each sample was filtered and the filtrate was analyzed for total iron and sulphur. The iron was determined colorimetrically by the thioglycolate method using a green filter.' The filtrate was oxidized with bromine to convert all of the soluble sulphur compounds into sulphate and this was determined with a Parr turbidimeter." When aeration tests were made in alkaline circuit, calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide was added at regular intervals to maintain a constant pH. A similar procedure was followed in an experiment to determine the abstraction of copper. ion by pyrrhotite. In this case various quantities of cupric chloride were added. The filtrate from each sample taken was analyzed for copper, total iron, and sulphur. The carbamate method with a green filter was used for the copper analysis,' since this method could tolerate a considerable amount of iron in the solution. A pneumatic cell, made from a 350-ml fritted glass Buechner funnel, was used for this experiment. The detail of the assemblage has been described elsewhere." In the present work a stainless steel baffle was inserted in the cell. This baffle overcame the tendency for the coarse pyrrhotite particles to be swirled around the wall of the cell and thus fail to collect in the froth. A 50-g sample of pyrrhotite was added to the cell which contained 260 ml of water. When pretreat-ment of the sample was desired, reagents, such as activator and pH regulator, were then added and the pulp was conditioned for a specified conditioning time. Prior to the addition of the collector approximately 15 ml of the solution were removed for pH measurement and for iron and sulphur analyses. Copper when used as activator was also determined. Collector and frother were then added and the pulp was conditioned for an additional 2 min. Air was admitted to the cell and the froth removed. The separation required from 4 to 6 min, depending on the characteristics of the froth. The float and non-float products were filtered, dried, weighed, and assayed for iron.

The position of these magnetic ore-mines, with reference to the county-seat, is shown in Fig. 1. They are situated on the south margin of the Great Valley, five miles south of Lebanon, and about midway between Reading on the Schuylkill River and Harrisburg on the Susquehanna River, in three prominent, contiguous hills, standing in front of the Mesozoic red shale arid sandstone hill country of northern Lancaster and southern Lebanon counties, and overlooking the great limestone plain to the north. The three hills, named respectively Big, Middle, and Grassy Hills, and separated from each other by two branches of Furnace Creek, range in a nearly east and west direction for a distance of about one mile. Their summits are respectively 870, 715, and 700 feet above tide. The railroad line opposite the base of Middle Hill is 575 feet above tide at Cornwall and 471 feet at Lebauon. These features are all distinctly illustrated in the contour-line map accompanying this paper, but are made still more clear in the relief. map, Fig. 2, comprising, as it does, about six square miles of territory contiguous to the ore-mines. This is a photographic plate of a model made by Mr. A. E. Lehman, from surveys of my own and Mr. W. F. Shunk. The model was built in layers of cardboard, each layer representing one 10-foot contour-carve line. The scale was the same as the original map, 400 feet= 1 inch, without any vertical exaggeration. The lowest contour-line is 530 feet above ocean level; the highest, 1075 feet. The center of the model was made the focusing-point of the view, which was taken—according to scale—51/2 miles north from and 24 miles above the focusing-point, looking southward. In October 1942, the War Production Board requested the Tennessee Valley Authority to undertake investigations to determine the feasibility of producing alumina suitable for reduction in aluminum cells, from clays and other domestic materials, by a lime-sintering, soda-ash leaching process. The work was undertaken by the chemical engineering staff of the Authority under the general direction of the War Metallurgy Committee of the National Academy of Sciences. The investigation included small-scale tests to determine the most suitable conditions for the process, and construction and operation of a pilot plant to obtain data for evaluation of the process and for design of a plant. The results of this investigation are described in the present paper. Sources of Alumina Alumina for the commercial production of aluminum is obtained from bauxite by the Bayer process. The tremendous demand for aluminum for wartime uses is causing rapid exhaustion of the high-grade bauxite deposits in the United States. On the other hand, there is an abundance of aluminous materials such as clay and lower grades of bauxite, which are not suitable for treatment by the Bayer process because of their high silica content. The Tennessee Valley Authority has conducted research and pilot-plant work for more than 5 years on methods for the production of alumina from clay and low-grade bauxite. Particular attention has been given to the high-grade white kaolin found in Carroll County, Tennessee. Exploratory drilling has demonstrated that at least 4 1/2 million tons of kaolin containing in excess of 34 per cent AlzOI is available in this area by strip-mining methods. It has been estimated that hundreds of millions of tons of clay of similar quality occur in the Tennessee Valley region. The Process The process is illustrated in the flowsheet (Fig. I), and consists essentially of the following steps: I. Heating a mixture of clay and limestone to form a sinter containing calcium aluminate and dicalcium silicate. z. Leaching this sinter with a dilute sodium carbonate solution, to form a sodium aluminate solution and a calcium carbonate, calcium silicate residue, which is discarded. 3. Treating the sodium aluminate solution with carbon dioxide to precipitate aluminum trihydrate and regenerate the sodium carbonate solution, which is recycled. 4. Heating the aluminum trihydrate to produce alumina. Several years of rock-burst research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the mining companies of the Coeur d'Alene mining district, Idaho, in addition to progress made by others throughout the world, have led to a good understanding of the rock-burst problem. This paper describes conditions which have caused specific bursts, present capabilities of detecting stress buildup and bursts, control methods, and a suggested approach to analyzing any individual mine-burst problem. A rock burst is the sudden, violent release of stored strain energy in rock by some mechanism of rock failure, generally accompanied by expulsion of rock with consequent damage to the mine. A burst may be audible for only a few hundred feet, or on the surface it may sound like a sonic boom miles away. This paper discusses the impact of taxes at the state and federal level on typical on-shore oil and gas exploration economics in the USA. Taxes considered are the windfall profits excise tax, state production (or severance) taxes, state income tax, and federal income tax. Also considered will be market prices for oil and gas in the USA. The effect of government take as a percent of revenue, on rate of return, discounted Payout, and discounted cumulative cash flow is shown on the attached tables. The conclusion drawn is that tax laws, while rarely the most important factor to be considered when drilling a well, can have significant impact on the profitability of oil and gas ventures, and should be considered when determining where to drill. Hypothetical exploration wells were analyzed for the impact of tax laws on project profitability. The results of this study show that when factors other than taxes are postulated to be the same (such as producing rate, capital, operating costs, and prices), cash flow can vary by as much as 68% due to the differences in the tax laws. Other significant findings for the cases studied include: (a) that discounted payout varied by as much as 1.8 years, (b) that rate of return differed by up to 67% and (c) the total tax rate as a percentage of revenue had a maximum variance of 33%.

The design, operation, and performance of an integrated pilot plant for recovering zinc and copper from a complex sulfide ore are described. Metallurqical processing comprised selective sulfate roasting in a fluid bed, leaching in a weak sulfuric acid solution, recovering copper by cementation with scrap iron, air oxidation to remove soluble iron, more-or-less conventional Purification for removal of impurities deleterious to zinc electrolysis, recovering zinc by electrolyzing solutions, and recycling spent electrolyte to the sulfating roaster. The effects of several feed preparation and roasting variables on the sulfation response of zinc, copper, and iron are set forth, together with the electrolyzing characteristics of the zinc solutions. SEVERAL years ago, St. Joseph Lead Co. undertook a research program to develop procedures for winning values from a complex ore. The deposit was a massive sulfide ore body containing upwards of 65 pct pyrite. Gangue, composed principally of quartz, calcite, dolomite, and alumina, comprised only 10 to 20 pct of the mineralized zones. Zinc, lead, and copper values were variable, but averaged about 6.7 pct Zn, 2.6 pct Pb, and 0.4 pct Cu. Early in the exploratory test work, it was established that the intimate physical association of the minerals in the ore made beneficiation by conventional flotation procedures difficult. Accordingly, in addition to a comprehensive program to investigate physical methods of ore beneficiation, a research program was established to develop a direct metallurgical method for processing the ore. After surveying a number of potential methods for recovery of both metal and sulfur values, effort was concentrated on the development of a sulfate roasting process. It is the pilot-plant development of the sulfate roasting-solution purification—electrolyzing procedures which forms the subject of the present paper. PREPILOT PLANT INVESTIGATIONS From a thermodynamic viewpoint, it is feasible to sulfate selectively a host of metals, including Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Co, in an iron sulfide ore without sulfating iron. Of course, a number of conditions such as roasting temperature and gas composition must be controlled. In addition, as first disclosed by Hybinette,' an alkali metal salt is frequently beneficial in promoting the sulfation reactions. The application of fluid bed roasting to the sulfate roasting of nonferrous metals was pioneered by Stephens of Battelle Memorial Institute.' Subsequently, Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Ltd. developed an unique process for selectively sulfating and recovering nickel, copper, and cobalt from their nickeliferous pyrrhotite, which recently has been described in an excellent paper by Thornhill.3 One of the unique features of the Falconbridge process is that the feed is introduced into the fluidized roasting furnace in a manner such that the feed slurry is broken up into droplets and the droplets lose their moisture before contacting the surface of the fluidized bed. The dried droplets do not tend to cake or fuse, but rather remain as discrete agglomerates of concentrate particles and roast without significant degradation. IN 1947 the metal-mining industry . passed through a year of readjustment; catching up on development work has caused production to suffer. Skilled labor has been short in most mining districts, notwithstanding the highest wage rate paid in the history of the industry. The trend has continued toward increased mechanization and refinements in practices and methods to increase the tons produced per man-shift. Improvements in procedures, however, have not kept pace with rising labor rates; and, in general, labor costs per ton mined have steadily increased since the war years. In a previous paper' the authors have investigated the structure of the oxide films formed on most of the metals that make up the alloys of this study. The metals were studied in order to provide basic information on the structures, both physical and chemical, of the oxide films and to determine how these structures are effected by the temperature, time of oxidation, and surface preparation. It was felt that an understanding of the physical and chemical structure as well as the stability of the oxide film might furnish clues as to the nature of the reaction process and the protective quality of the film. The oxidation of the metals was studied over the temperature range 300' to 7o0°C. except for copper, wherc the range selected was 100' to 500°C. The results of these studies were presented in graphical form as existence diagrams of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. For some of the metals the existence diagrams were simple and showed few chemical transitions, but there were numerous cases where the physical state of the oxide surface was a function of time and temperature. In general the physical state of the oxide surface changed with increasing temperature so as to increase the sharpness of the diffraction patterns and to cause orientation effects to be more pronounced. Deviatiois in lattice Darameters from X-ray values were noted. In general these deviations were of positive nature and may be due to solid solution of the metal in the oxide lattice. This effect might be expected in thin oxide films. In a study of the oxidation of alloys containing two or more metals, there may arise the complicating factor of identification of the oxides formed. A thorough understanding of the oxides formed on the pure metals, therefore, was, essential before investigation of the oxidation of alloys. In this paper it is our purpose to present a study of the following problems: 1. The existence diagrams of various alloys. 2. The effect of the structure of the alloying metal on the existence diagram of iron. 3. The effect of the percentage of chromium on the oxides formed on Fe-Cr alloys. 4. The relationships, if any, between the oxides formed and the protective quality of the oxides. The following alloys are included in this study: alloys of iron with body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic and other metals, 13 Cr-Fe, 18-8 stainless steel, K4²B, Nichrome V, Hipernik, Inconel, Stellite "²I," Refractaloy, Kovar, mild steel, a series of Cr-Fe alloys and a series of Co-Fe alloys. Since many of the commercial alloys in this list contain more than two metals, various complicating factors in the identification of the oxides formed may arise.

THE modern anthracite breaker or washery uses almost completely a wet method of preparation, which requires, roughly, 1 gal. of water per minute per ton of production per day. The entire anthracite industry uses about 320,000 gal. per min. of water for this purpose or 800,000 tons of water per day. As this water leaves the breakers, it contains fine solids-coal, slate, pyrite, and clay-and is then called silt or slush; as slush is the term most commonly used, it will be employed throughout this paper. The solid content of the slush will be referred to as solids. In the earlier days of anthracite mining, little coal was washed, less crushing was employed, and virgin coal was mined exclusively. As a result, the slush problem was not acute because of the relatively small quantity and the coarseness of the solids. Such slush as was produced could usually be easily impounded and retained or could be discharged into streams without any appreciable pollution being apparent. The character of the fine waste from the breakers, changed materially as its quantity increased until now about 40,000 tons of slush solids are produced daily. Second mining and robbing operations materially increased the quantity of fine solids delivered to the breaker in the mine car. The demand for chestnut, stove and egg sizes, to the exclusion of grate, steamboat, and lump sizes, require finer crushing of the mine-run coal with a consequent increase of fine solids in slush. The use of rice and barley sizes removed a considerable tonnage of coarser solids from the slush but left great quantities of fine solids difficult to retain completely and store and long considered of no possible fuel value. Despite the efforts of the coal operators, the slush solids have found their way into the streams causing, in some cases, serious pollution. The Water Supply Commission of Pennsylvania published, in 1916, a report on Culm in the Streams of the Anthracite Region,1 from which the following is taken: About 40,000,000,000 gal. of water carrying 10,000,000 tons of fine culm are discharged into the water-courses direct, flushed into the mines, or disposed of by various means on the surface. FOR the first time other than on occasion of war the people of the United States are experiencing full-scale participation in world affairs. Public concern has seldom been so involved with conditions and events beyond our own continental limits. Our interest is not wholly of recent origin. Over the years the activity of the United States as a world power and an important trading nation brought about the widening of our political interests and the progressive interrelation of our economy with that of the rest of the world. Some may see in our present phase of world-wide activity the natural consequence of our continued growth. Such observers must also be aware that within recent years our importance in world affairs has been considerably increased. For within the space of an extremely short period events have occurred that have literally jet-propelled the United States into the role of a leading participant in the conduct of world affairs. Little of the choice of this role was left to us. The decline of power in western Europe, the ascendancy between the Elbe and the Pacific shore of an obviously antagonistic force, our earnest endeavor to secure international control of atomic energy, the necessity of providing relief and rehabilitation to war-ravaged areas, and the police work that must be done in occupied territories are problems which have risen in great measure without our help-but they cannot be solved without it.

Throughout history mining operations have, been relatively technical in character and somewhat esoteric. In ancient times mines were places where prisoners of war or criminals were sent, to drag out short lives of hard labor, under conditions ranging from hazardous to lethal. Underground mines were damp and poorly lighted, and workers were often cramped in narrow spaces and tiresome positions. Hard rock was mined by building fires against faces and quenching with water. Combustion products from these fires and from such dim torches as were provided, plus the dampness, made the underground atmospheres quite injurious to health. During the Middle Ages, mining became less penitential and more technical. Because of the desire of sovereigns to foster production from mines, miners enjoyed special privileges as free men. Crude pumping, hoisting, and ventilation systems were introduced (Fig. 9.1). However, mining remained a relatively hardworking, hazardous occupation, separated from the lives and comprehensions of most people. With the Industrial Revolution, steam-powered pumps enabled penetration to greater depths, and the use of power-driven machinery gradually revolutionized productivity. Skill became more important than back-breaking labor. This revolution continues into the present. Mining today uses some of the largest and most complicated machinery in existence and little rock is moved by direct labor. Power drills, explosives, and boring machines penetrate and break hard rock. The modern mine, surface or underground, presents an impressive panoply of drilling, breaking, loading, and transporting equipment, facilities for power transmission, pumping, and ventilation, and expensive, complicated crushing and treatment machinery. Modern technology, machinery, and skilled workmen produce an efficiency that knows no parallel in the raw material field. Mineral substances are extracted and converted into useful forms at costs which are dwarfed by those of providing forest or agricultural products in terms of comparable weights, even though conversion of these last categories is typically much simpler. Capital investment per worker, i.e., mechanization, is greater than in nearly all other industries. Despite these features, and more than average financial risk, the mineral industries perform at modest profit. The popular concept that mines and oil fields are sources of boundless rewards is a myth, sustained by the occasional unusual episode. Before one can start actual production of minerals, he must first acquire a suitable deposit. The process of acquisition will require anything from a rather simple search to a difficult, lengthy, expensive exploration effort. After locating the desired deposit, title must be obtained by denouncement, concession, leasing, or purchase. If the deposit is solid, it can be mined in pits or underground workings. If fluid or easily fusible, it can be produced through wells. If dissolved in lake or seawater, it can be

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Norinally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now heing used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present piche will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time. Lightweight Aggregates Used in the Northwest PUMICE Interest in Oregon pumice is not new. Deposits are abundant. Successful development, however, dates only from 1946. During 1948 a total of nine operations was engaged in full or part-time production of aggregate. The postwar building boom and increased public consciousness regarding the value of insulation are the immediate reasons behind the current development. Just how firmly this production of pumice aggregate may be established is something which cannot be foretold at the present time. Much will depend upon how successfully the pumice aggregate construction already installed stands the test of time. Some fine pumice aggregate products have been made and it seems probable that because of its unique properties a certain demand for pumice aggregate will continue in the future. Fire-proof, rodent-proof, decay-resistant properties supplement the lightness in weight and insulation properties of pumice aggregate products in rendering them particularly ideal for many types of construction. In addition there has been fabrication in the form of reinforced fence posts, street markers, and similar products of a specialized-product nature and these are not to be overlooked in terms of future production. Also pertinent to how soundlj pumice aggregate production is established will be possible future competition with other lightweight aggregates. However, this situation will be governed largely by competitive costs of production and marketing. For its present use, which is almost exclusively limited to the manufacturing of building blocks, the market for Oregon pumice aggregate has been extended from the mining area around Rend and Chemult to points as far distant as San Francisco and Seattle. Naturally enough the bulk of the production goes to the Portland and eastern Oregon consumers. Shipments are made by both rail and truck. Early in 1947 the State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries made a canvass of all pumice producers in the state. The production for 1956 amounted to 26,614 cu yd and was valued at $13,649 at the plants. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates the production for 1947 as 33,240 short tons valued at $111,380. This is roughly 65,000 cu yd. No data are available for the 1948 production but it is understood to exceed that for 1947. The Oregon pumice occurrences originated largely from the eruption of Mount Mazama, the name of the formerly active volcano and the location of Crater Lake. Other lesser volcanoes throughout the area contributed to the present occurrences, however, and it has been estimated by Moore' that the pumice deposits cover an area of some 3500 square miles. This area lies east of Crater Lake between Bend and Klamath Falls and embraces the southern portion of Deschutes County, the northern part of Klamath County, and the northwest corner of Lake County. Thickness of the pumice ranges from thin skims to local thicknesses of as much as 30 to 40 ft. Fragment size also varies greatly. Any attempt to describe the situation by giving screen analyses would be confusing because of the wide variations to be found in all area of this size. The picture can best be summed up by stating that places showing great variations in fragment size can be found if a search for extremes is made. For mining purposes in connection with aggregate production, it call be stated that miles and miles of pumice exist in which the fragrnent sizes range from an inch or so downward. The usual color of the pumice is a light gray to off-white. A typical pumice analysis shows a silica content of about 69 pct, alumina 15 pct, and sodium oxide about 5 pct. Potash, lime, and water are the next three most abundant constituents, running just a little over 2 pct each. Iron oxides are fairly constant at 2.75 pct. Titanium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus occur in amounts of less than 1 pct. All of the foregoing substances are combined as a glass exhibiting cellular structure. The weight of crushed but otherwise pit-run (undried) pumice runs around 1100 Ib per cu yd according to figures furnished by various producers.
