AMIDST the tumult and the shouting of the times, there are perceptible certain tendencies, quiet though serious, to take stock of the situation with a view to putting our house in order, and of these none is more encouraging than the awakening, interest in the higher education, and especially in technical education. Various committees of the professional organizations have cast much light on the matter and have pointed the way to progress and reform, but their scope is necessarily restricted by the requirements of precision and any excursion beyond these bounds must be undertaken by the unfettered individual who is free to rush in where responsible committees fear to tread. A discussion of the bearing of the higher education on character scarcely lends itself to objective treatment and yet, fraught as it is with imponderables and abstractions, the theme cannot be escaped in any com-prehensive scheme of education. The question is being pressed with growing insist-ence, why these United States, relatively to Europe, are deficient in intellectual output, and the ready reply, "Because America is a new country and Americans are too intent on developing their natural resources," is too facile and too false to carry conviction.

THOUGH known as the platinum-group metal- the sextuplet, platinum, palladium, iridium. rhodium, osmium, ruthenium, might well be called the American metals or perhaps Pan-American metals, as the ore containing them eras first discovered in South America, and in recent years the largest production has come from North America. The South American alluvial deposits, which also, contain gold, are in active production, as are the alluvial platinum deposits of Alaska, but the main production is from the copper-nickel ores of Sudbury, Ontario. The Russian deposits in the Urals were the source of most of the worlds platinum for about 100 years, but since 1934 have assumed second place. For a time considerable amounts of platinum came from several rather rich deposits in South Africa but these were exhausted quickly. However, a tremendous reserve of lower-grade ore exists there, which could be worked profitably if the price of platinum were considerably higher.

PURE silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearings.1-8 A review of the properties of thallium and the silver-thallium constitutional diagram was made by the author to analyze the possibilities of silver-thallium compositions for antifriction materials.† The silver-rich end of the diagram as reported in the literature9-11 was found to be sketchy and it was necessary to carry out considerable experimental work to arrive at definite conclusions. Some of the results of this work are reported in this paper. TEST MATERIALS In the beginning of the work, only fused alloys were investigated. Later, research [TABLE I. In preparing the fused alloys, care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thallium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in. diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr2O7, 8 c.c. H2SO4, and 100 c.c. H2O. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C. show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475°C. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not result in complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. To open the Fisher Hill mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, it was necessary to sink an inclined shaft into the rock and excavate stations, drifts, and ore pockets. This inclined shaft, or slope, q ft. 8 in. high by 28 ft. 2 in. wide, has compartments for two 5-ft. gauge ore-skip tracks of 120-lb. rail, one 5-ft. gauge man-skip track of 60-lb. rail, a concrete stairway, and service pipes consisting of a 12-in. compressed-air line, an 8-in. pump-discharge line, and a 4-in. water-supply line. When we were requested to investigate the work, the progress being made (by another organization) amounted to only 2 ½ ft. advance in 24 hr. We reported that progress of at least 6 ft. per day could be made. As a result, the Defense Plant Corporation, through the Republic Steel [ ] Corporation, entered into a contract with us to sink the shaft. The contract contained a penalty and bonus clause predicated upon an advance of 150 ft. per month. The average advance was 7.8 ft. per day; that in the best six-day week was 60 ft. and that in the best month, 215.5 ft. in 25 working days. The drilling was performed by 3 ½ -in. wet drifter drills mounted on five 8-ft. columns (see accompanying illustration). Even though a full-face drilling and mucking operation is customarily desirable, the steep slope, with the accumulation of water and fine debris at the face, made a modified heading and bench operation preferable. A computer program has been developed to afford rapid and complete quantitative log analysis for exploration and production decisions. The computation consists of automatic selection of tops and bottoms of porous intervals from the digitized data, and then point-by-point calculations within each selected interval. Nearly all log types can be analyzed. This paper presents the calculation techniques found to be appticable to machine evaluation and gives examples of their use. INTRODUCTION As the quantitative interpretation of well logs entails repetitive use of charts and equations, it is natural that digital computer programs would be written. A Universal Log Interpretation Computer Program (ULICP) has been developed to afiord rapid and complete analysis for exploration and production decisions. Application of this program enables the log analyst to: (I) apply rapid quantitative log analysis for exploration and production decisions on either a field, a well or on a single zone basis; (2) apply concepts of interpretation requiring detailed numerical analysis; (3) analyze all porous intervals on each log, rather than a few selected zones, and complete the analysis in less time than previously required. Computations are reported for every digitized point in each zone; (4) use empirical techniques applicable to a given area as an integral part of the computation; (5) experiment with the empirical coefficients and exponents in the interpretation equations to find the best possible solution; and (6) automatically plot both the original and computed data to scales analogous to the field prints. The primary utility of a log interpretation program stems from its ability to do an overwhelming amount of work with very little man-power. If a calculation procedure or thought process can be formalized to the extent that step-by-step logic can be written, a computer program can be developed that follows this logic. The major question is one of economics. A feasibility study of the costs for such a program indicates that digital processing is economical primarily as a means of increasing the productivity of the log analyst. In effect, the probability of missing productive intervals in any well, because of a lack of time to do detailed calculations, is greatly reduced. The nucleus of ULICP is programmed to compute large sections of a suite of logs by selecting zones automatically and then performing all pertinent computations on a data point by data point basis within each zone.'.' An entire suite of logs can be processed in this manner with very little manual intervention. Sufficient programming logic is available so that each log analyst can request computations pertinent to his area. These requests are made by simple additions or deletions of information on the input header cards. Hence, the log analyst is always in complete control of the computation process. The evaluation of a suite of logs requires pre-editing, digitization, computation, presentation of results and interpretation. Work by the log analyst is reqilired only in pre-editing and interpretation. Thus, he is allowed more time for comprehensive interpretation, rather than calculation. For continuity, the discussion of ULICP is organized sequentially: pre-editing, digitization, computation and presentation of results. DISCUSSION PRE-EDITING The extent of pre-editing prior to computation is dependent on the format of the original data. For analog prints, it requires inspection, correlation and editing of the logs, plus the entering of required data an special forms. For digitized data such as magnetic tape field recordings, only the special forms are necessary. The process for analog prints will be given here. The inspection and correlation process involves the selection of sections for digitization and the correlation of the traces to a common depth. To decrease the cost of digitization, traces that exhibit large variations in shale formations can be redrawn to a non-zero baseline. The next step is to enter all pertinent data on the input header cards. The header cards presently used for ULICP are presented as Figs. 1 through 6. Cards 1, 2, 3 and 4 (Fig. 1) are defined as the Main Header Cards. They describe the particular well for output identification and give basic information. Cards 5 through 15 (Figs. 2 through 6) are defined as the Block Header Cards. As such, they define the log types and the interpretation parameters for the block of data immediately following. Cards 1 through 10 are required for every computer run. Cards 11 through 14 pertain only to nuclear logs. Card 11 is required if any nuclear log is supplied, and cards 12 through 14 are required only when gamma-ray, density or neutron log data, respectively, are supplied. First, the usefulness of technical education to either the possessor of it or those to whom its services may be made available industrially depends primarily upon the quality of the education and the capabilities of the educated to put his talents to effective and constructive employment in his chosen field of applied science.

Two equations express the integral rate at which fines are produced from a homogeneous material: It has been demonstrated that the Gaudin-Meloy distribution for single fracture is equally applicable to multiple fracture and is related to the Gaudin-Schuhmann distribution at least when the distribution modulus a is close to unity. A, xoY was found to be independent of starting mass over the range studied when particle size was held constant. The equations are related to the input energy to the mill. In an earlier paper,' it was shown that when Mo g of uniformly sized homogeneous material is ground dry in a batch rod mill, the energy-size reduction equation is expressed at any time by the mass of unbroken starting material left at time t, ku is the size modulus of the portion Mo - Mt, and P is a constant that is generally equal to the distribution modulus a. If the power to the mill is constant, Et is proportional to time and Eq. 1 is rewritten where (Mo -Mt)/t is actually the integral rate at which fines are produced from a parent material, and A, is another constant. The size modulus, k,, is determined from the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation:2 where y is the cumulative fraction finer than any size x. Recently, Gaudin and Meloy derived a distribution equation for single fracture on the assumption that the random fracture of a homogeneous material produces daughter particles of similar shape. Their equation is given by where y is the cumulative fraction finer than size X, x, is the size of the unfractured parent, and r is designated the size ratio. Single crystals of each metal were deformed at 77°K and heated at constant rates, variously in the range 0.125" to 4o°Kper min from 77" to -390oK, while being monitored in an X-ray diffractometer. Changes in diffraction-peak heights and line breadths were used to ascertain the temperature ranges of recrystalliza-tion. The results were subjected to the analysis of nicholas' in order to obtain the rate-controlling activation energies,Q. In this analysis no recourse to a separate and distinct nucleation stage is required and the results of studying recrystallization proved consistent with the hypothesis of a constant number of nuclei or equivalent hypotheses. The values Pb = 5.5 ± 0.5 keal per mole Zn ~ 7.5 Sn - 5 Bi - 9. 5 correspond for lead, zinc, and tin to activation energies obtained elsewhere for grain boundary migration, and for bismuth and lead to previous studies of re-crystallization by Barrett.6 This correlation allows the conclusions that interference from recovery was minimal and that the observed recrystallization rates in these pure metals are effectively governed by grain boundary migration. Good agreement was not found between the results of this kind of study in zone-refined aluminum and previous work; and supplementary isothermral experiments involving hardness tests and metallography did not resolve the discrepancy. Nevertheless, at least a range,Q = 11.5 ± 2 keal per mole, can be assigned to the activation energy for boundary migration in aluminum. An experimental study of one aspect of the recrystallization process is presented here for four metals of different crystal structure. The metals chosen for study were all zone-refined to reduce impurity effects, but the attendant high purity presented a difficulty. For any reasonably high driving force a "re-crystallization temperature", TR, is in the range of 0.25 T,, where T, is the absolute melting point, and study was therefore restricted to lower temperatures. An X-ray technique under constant heating-rate conditions adequate above 90°K was devised for the study; in consequence, a newer type of analysis following Nicholas1 had to be used to obtain quantitative information about activation energies. The standard methods of studying recrystallization have involved the comparable analyses of Johnson and Mehl2 and Avrami3 which are reviewed by Burke and Turnbull.* The general analysis4 which is applied only to isothermal studies using any of various investigative techniques states:

The theory of gravitation is based on Newton's law that any two bodies exert a mutual attraction which is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them; i. e., A = KMRm2 (1) where K is a constant, M and m are the respective masses of the two bodies, and R the distance between them. In the earth's gravitational system, the earth is one of the bodies; the other may be any body within or without the earth. In theoretical discussions and calculations,in regard to gravity, that other body usually is taken as a unit of mass: in the C:. C:. S. system, a body of one gram in mass. Gravity and Level Surfaces Gravity is defined in geophysics as the force of attraction exerted by the earth, towards itself, on a body of unit mass. The intensity of gravity is usually expressed in dynes of force or in centimeters of acceleration In geophysical work in America, most commonly it is expressed in dynes (per gram) with the "per gram" understood and not directly expressed. In geophysical work in Europe, most commonly it is expressed in centimeters per second per second (cm. /sec.2) and less commonly lrierely as centimeter-gram-second units (c. g. s). At sea level, the intensity of gravity amounts very nearly to 980 dynes. The vertical is the direction along which the attraction of gravity is exerted at any point. In most cases, it is very nearly, but not quite, perpendicular to the earth's surface. The path that would be taken by a body falling freely through space toward the earth is vertical at each point and may be spoken of also as ('the vertical," or as the line of the vertical, or as a line of force of gravity. At the earth's surface it comrrlonly is very nearly, but not quite, a straight line.

Cooperation will be the keynote of the meeting of the Institute that will be held in New York on February 17 to 20. Arrangements are being made for two joint sessions with the Canadian Mining Institute, on the same day, which therefore will be known as Canadian Mining Institute Day. On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 19, there will be a joint session with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Besides, we will receive six or eight papers through the National Research Council, four of which will be presented at the National Research Council Session. In March, at the next meeting, of the Canadian Mining Institute, there will be an American Institute of Mining Engineers Day. The plan is to have the same subjects discussed at both meetings, but by different speakers. One speaker on each subject will represent the Canadian Mining Institute, and one speaker the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Canadians and the Americans who will speak in Canada are expected to attend the discussion in New York. In addition the discussion at the New York meeting will be sent to Canada in printed form, so that the Canadian discussion will be a continuation of the former. At the joint session with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, there will -be presented six very important papers on the subject of Electric Welding, one by the Chairman of the Electric Welding Research Committee of the National Research Council, another by the Chairman of the Metallurgical Sub-committee of that same Committee, and a third by Comfort A. Adams, President of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and Chairman of the Welding Committee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation. We will receive six or eight papers through the National Research Council. These papers are results of recent investigations and represent the last word in their respective subjects. The excursion on Thursday, February 20, will be to Newark Bay to visit the Federal Shipyard where the first, electric-welded ship is being built. Philip W. The Australian continent possesses significant reserves of a wide range of minerals, including bauxite, coal, copper, diamonds, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands, nickel, phosphate, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. Australia's identified economic resources of many minerals are very large as indicated in Table 1. A sophisticated and highly experienced mineral industry is now an established feature of the Australian economy and Australia is the world's largest exporter of iron ore, alumina, mineral sands and refined lead and amongst the leading suppliers of many other commodities such as coal, lead and zinc ores/concentrates, nickel, refined zinc, tungsten concentrates and bauxite. The industry exports 70% of its production. This is reflected in the value of Australian mineral exports which have grown from about $200m in 1960/61, comprising 10% of total export receipts, to about $1265m or 29% of export income in 1970/71 to around $7061 representing 37% of Australia's total export income in 1980/81. AUSTRALIA'S MINERAL RESOURCES POLICIES Federal and State Governments' Responsibilities Australia has a federal system of government comprising six States, a self-governing Territory and a Federal Government. Under the Australian federal system the Constitution sets down the powers of the Federal Government. All powers not assigned to the Federal Government in the Australian Constitution reside automatically with the States. Certain of these broad powers result in the Federal Government having a significant influence on resources development. For example, in being responsible for economic management, the Federal Government's fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Federal Government is of direct importance to decision-makers in the resources industry. The Federal Government is responsible also under the Constitution for external trade matters; and international trade and commodity matters are increasingly important in Australia's international relationships. Foreign investment is another area where the Federal Government has a role to ensure that national interests are protected. This foreign investment power flows from the Federal Government's control of foreign exchange movements into and out of Australia. However, before enlarging on these and others of the Federal Government's powers and policies, it should be emphasized that the State governments, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within their own boundaries, are more directly involved in the day-to-day administration and regulation of mining operations. For instance, the powers of the State governments include the responsibility-for the granting of exploration rights and mining leases, the approval of mining operations and the levying of royalties and other like charges. Administrative arrangements covering the granting of minerals and petroleum exploration and development titles vary from State to State. Before development rights are granted, State governments consider environment protection and rehabilitation aspects of development proposals. The provision of infrastructure within State borders is a matter primarily of State government responsibility. It is usual practice in Australia for State governments to construct and operate infrastructure services such. as railways, ports and electricity generation and transmission. The States may also provide certain public services such as electricity. and water, port and loading facilities, communications, health and education services which form part of the infrastructure of mining operations. In remote areas the mining companies themselves usually are expected to provide much of this infrastructure. However, the Federal Government is primarily responsible in some fields, such as telecommunications and parts of the railways network. State governments carry out preliminary exploration and geological mapping and some are directly involved in the mining of coal for power generation. The Federal Government's responsibilities in addition to economic management, taxation, international relations, foreign capital and investment, include regulation of exports, environmental matters and matters affecting the Aboriginals of the Northern Territory. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT POLICIES The continued sound development of the minerals and energy resources sector is regarded by the Federal Government as being of very great importance. However, the Government does not seek to participate directly in resource developments. It sees its role rather as that of establishing a sound economic and policy climate in which private companies can identify opportunities, seek out customers and marshall the necessary capital for the development of resource projects.

DRAINAGE water from coal mines is probably the most serious water pollution problem today, varying in importance according to location of the mines and geological structure. Drainage may be either acid or alkaline in character. Acid discharge, the most severely detrimental to a stream, is caused by natural oxidation of the sulfuritic material (FeS2) in the strata associated with the coal seam. Since the acid is the result of a natural reaction the acid water differs because it does not cease with abandonment of the mining operations. There is no known economical method of neutralizing acid mine water or any practical method to prevent oxidation of exposed pyrite. Since production of acid from a mine does not stop when mining stops, the total quantity produced depends entirely upon the excavated areas. The increasing volume of acid water in manv mines has greatly increased operating costs. Pumping is expensive and acid mine waters are destructive of all equipment, especially metals in pumps and piping, and necessitate the use of corrosion-resistant materials. Discharge of the acid mine drainage into streams neutralizes their normal alkalinity, causes them to become acid, and produces an environment unfavorable for aquatic life and unsuited for industrial or domestic use without costly treatment. Mine drainages vary in percentage composition over wide limits, although the usual dissolved substances are ferrous and ferric iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium sulfates, and lesser amounts of sodium, potassium and manganese sulfates and chlorides. Some alkaline discharges may contain heavy concentrations of iron as iron bicarbonate. These waters may produce iron hydroxide deposits in the receiving stream but do not cause it to become acid. In the extensive literature on acid mine water there appears to be a great deal of confusion about the importance of various components and the methods for their determination. In many instances faulty conclusions have been drawn from use of unsuitable methods of analysis. It is desirable that the factors and terms used in evaluation of analyses of mine waters should be so clearly defined that any interested person could properly appraise any analytical report. Some analysts report complete chemical analyses of mine waters and neglect to record drainage volumes. Others report only a minimum of analytical data after taking no precautions to preserve the original composition of the water during the time elapsing between collection and analysis. Some use methods of analysis intended for so-called pure waters of the potable and boiler water classes. These methods are not applicable to highly buffered waters such as mine water. Probably the most common criteria for evaluation are pH, free acidity, or acidity or alkalinity to methyl orange or methyl red, total acidity or acidity to hot phenol-phthalein, and the sulfate content. If these determinations are made on carelessly collected samples after a few days to weeks standing in warm rooms, they do not in any way represent the character of the water flowing from the mines. It is hoped that a brief discussion of the fundamental value of some of these factors may lead to a bettqr understanding of the need for more careful evaluation of mine water discharges. The term pH is one used by chemists to express relative acidity or alkalinity in terms of concentration of effective hydrogen ion in a solution. It is defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration or activity in equivalents per liter. pH = logarithm A neutral solution, which is one containing the same number of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions, has a pH of 7. As the hydrogen ions increase and the solution becomes more acid, the pH decreases toward zero; and as the hydroxyl ions increase and the solution becomes more alkaline, the pH approaches 14. When dissolved in water to a dilute solution acids like sulfuric and hydrochloric, commonly known as strong acids, ionize completely, and the pH or hydrogen ion concentration varies with molar concentration of the dissolved acid. However, in high concentrations of such acids, the pH or hydrogen ion concentration is less than the acid concentration because the acid does not completely ionize. In only very dilute solutions does the pH represent the total amount of acid that can be neutralized by an alkali. All ionization reactions are equilibrium reactions. If other chemicals are added to the solution of an acid and the added chemical produces an ion that is the same as one of the ions of the acid, the degree of ionization of the acid is altered and the pH changes to some value that represents the active hydrogen ion of the new solution. Thus if iron sulfate is added to a solution of sulfuric acid the pH increases, since the common sulfate ion suppresses the degree of ionization of the sulfuric acid and decreases the effective hydrogen ion. However, the total acidity of the solution is increased. There are two salts composed of iron and sulfate— ferrous and ferric sulfate. In these salts there is no hydrogen ion that can ionize to give an acid solution, but when they are dissolved in water, the pH is less than 7 and the solution becomes acid. This is caused by a reaction known as hydrolysis and is represented by the equations FeSO4 + 2H2O ? Fe(OH)2 + 2H + SO,: or Fe,(SO,)3 + 6H2O ? 2Fe(OH)3 + 6H+ + 3504 A solution with a total acidity of 5000 ppm according to the first equation will have a pH of 4.40 but one with an acidity of 75 ppm, according to the sec-

Uranium ore deposits in the Lisbon Valley area are in an arcuate belt, 15 miles long by one-half-mile wide, on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline. They range in size from 500 to 1,500,000 tons and by mid-1965 had yielded 6,147,000 tons containing 48,530,000 pounds of U3O8. Ore bodies average 6 feet thick, are tabular, amoeba-shaped masses, concordant to the bedding, and are in the thickest, lowest sandstone unit of the Moss Back Member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The host rock is predominantly a fluviatile, calcareous, fine-grained to conglomeratic sandstone. Uraninite, the principal ore mineral, fills the pores in the sandstone and partly replaces sand grains and fossil wood fragments. During Late Permian and Early Triassic time pre-Chinle Formations were arched to form the ancestral Permian anticline. Moss Back streams truncated Moenkopi and Cutler beds which capped the ancestral anticline and then covered it with fluviatile elastics, which were subsequently covered by thousands of feet of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous sediments. Uranium, probably derived from the Chinle Formation by diagenetic processes, was transported in connate ground waters, was moved by compaction or hydrostatic forces, and was deposited under reducing conditions. Uranium was emplaced around the crest of the ancestral anticline, prior to the Laramide orogeny. During the orogeny, the Tertiary-Lisbon valley anticline was super induced on the Permian anticline and, penecontemporaneous with uplift, was faulted parallel to its longitudinal axis. The Big Indian ore belt on the southwest flank footwall block was elevated to approximately its present position, and the northeast flank hanging wall block was elevated only slightly. An extension of the Big Indian ore belt around the northeast flank of the ancestral Permian anticline may exist in the Moss Back sandstone in the downthrown block northeast of the Lisbon Valley fault.

A discussion of the various factors affecting the accuracy of volume fraction determination by the direct comparison X-ray diffraction method is presented. To minimize errors introduced by nonrandomization effects such as preferred orientation and large grain size, as well as errors introduced by statistical effects, an iterative mathematical analysis is introduced. This analysis is applied to all observable diffractio~ spectra from a given specimen by means of computer techniques and is statistically superior to the standard direct comparison technique which utilizes only one or tm sets of intensity spectra. The computer program also presents a graphical interpretation of- the results which enables the investigator to visualize and readily assess the scatter in volume fraction estimates caused by deviations from randomness. Finally, the iterative analysis is applied to experimental data collected from a series of plain carbon steels in both the as-received and spheroidized conditions to determine the volume fraction of cemen-tite present in each case. The results show markedly good agreement with chemical analyses for all spheroidized specimens. In theory, quantitative X-ray diffraction is a power-ful analytical technique for precise determination of the volume fractions of various phases present in a multiphase poly crystalline aggregate. There are two generally used methods; both utilize the fact that the intensity of a diffraction line of a particular phase is a function of volume fraction of that phase present in the aggregate. The more common method is the so-called internal standard technique where a known amount of standard substance is mixed with the aggregate containing the unknown. The resulting ratio of the intensity of a particular diffraction line of the unknown to the intensity of a diffraction line from the standard is used to find the weight fraction of unknown material by reference to the intensity data obtained from a previously prepared set of standards containing the same amount of standard material. The details of this technique are outlined in standard works on X-ray diffraction.' The disadvantages of the technique are that it requires the use of powder specimens and that the powder mixture must be homogeneous near the surface to the maximum effective beam depth. The alternative technique is the direct comparison method in which the ratio of the intensity of a diffraction line of a phase in the aggregate to the intensity of a second-phase diffraction line yields the ratio of the volume fractions of each phase present. This method has been applied most extensively to the determination of the percentage of retained austenite in martensitic steels and to determining the amounts of hcp and fcc allotropic modifications in pure cobalt5 and the amounts of hexagonal and rhombohedra1 modifications in graphite.8 This method is applicable to bulk as well as powder aggregates and is the technique which will be considered in the following text. It is the purpose of the present communication to show that by combining the results of X-ray diffrac-tometry with the use of high-speed digital computers the results of the direct comparison quantitative X-ray analysis technique can be optimized by using all of the data available on a diffraction pattern. THEORETICAL DISCUSSION In optimizing any quantitative X-ray diffraction experiment, the problem of accuracy vs time to collect and analyze the experimental data arises. For any method to be practical, it is required that both experimental and analytical procedures are reasonably short. In most of the previous work performed by the direct comparison method, intensity data from only one or two sets of peaks were used to calculate the volume fraction of phases present in the aggregate. Consequently, rather long-time experimental measurements are required to assure that the intensity data are sufficiently accurate to justify the use of one or two sets of data. By using computer techniques to analyze the experimental data it becomes feasible to use all of the available data on a diffraction pattern. By so doing, the time spent in measuring any one diffraction maxima can be appreciably reduced. Although this results in poor counting statistics for any one maxima, the number of data points available for analysis is greatly increased. Based on the above discussion, it will be assumed that a continuous scanning counter-diffractometer technique will be used to collect intensity data from a two-phase mixture. The integrated intensity of the ith diffraction line from the a phase in the aggregate is given by:'" where is the volume fraction of the a phase, The various quantities in Eq. [la] are angular independent while those in [lb] depend on the hkl spectrum of a particular phase. The meaning of the individual quantities in Eqs. [la] and [lb] are given in Appendix 1. It is convenient at this point to outline briefly the factors which will affect the measured intensity of any one hkl spectrum. a) Extinction effects arise from two independent experimental conditions. THE joint meetings of the Mining Geology Committee and the Society of Economic Geologists proved to be deservedly popular, and the interesting papers drew an attendance which strained the capacity of one of the large meeting rooms.. As might be expected these days when even the Supreme Court can't keep away from the subject of gold, the discussions opened on Thursday morning with several papers devoted to questions of structural and mineralogical relationships of the deposits of this metal. The presentation of Ira B. Joralemon's paper, "Veins and Faults in the Bralorne Mine," by Reno Sales, elicited considerable discussion on the relation of mariposite to gold, and the situation of the gold deposits with respect -to the Coast Range batholith. H. V. Warren stated that lie had observed mariposite always to be associated with gold in this region, but that gold was not always associated with mariposite. He pointed out that there is a series of veins on the west side of the batholith with a different mineralogy that, because of their richness but small size could quite easily make good, small mines. John A. Dresser concurred in this, and said lie thought this region was one of great promise for the mining geologist. He also reported having found mariposite associated with gold values below commercial limits, in the Appalachian regions.

AS with Phil Kraft, referred to on this page last month, travel has always held a great fascination for Raymond Frank Baker and for that reason he determined to become a geologist. He had heard that geologists travel and that was what he wanted to do. Now as chief geologist for The Texas Co. his early wish has been fulfilled-he spends almost one third of his time journeying' from one oil field to another. Mr. Baker was born in New Haven, Conn., on Jan. 11, 1892, and went through the public schools in New Britain. A stalwart New Englander, he attended Yale and in 1912 received a degree in civil engineering. For a year following this he worked as a civil engineer for the New York Central Railroad, but his early urge to travel widely could not be satisfied here. So in 1913 he re-entered Yale and until 1916 studied mining and economic geology. He had a little taste of field work, which later became so enjoyable to him, in the summer of 1915 when he worked with the U. S. Geological Survey as a geologic aid. In 1916 he made his first contact with The Texas Co. when he entered their Tulsa office as a geologist. This early career was interrupted by service in the

A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual stools.

BEFORE entering into the statistical part of this article, some general comments may be ln order. Each important war seems to introduce a new atmosphere and a new epoch. The Civil War led to the period of great interior development in North America, of the transcontinental railroads, and of large-scale manufactures. The first World War introduced the general use of the automobile, the building of a huge network of highways, the radio, and household engineering. Now I expect World War II also to introduce some new ways of living. Transocean aviation will become a commonplace; we shall probably have much more of an eye to our military and naval establishments and be more conscious of Eastern Hemisphere affairs instead of thinking so exclusively of the Western. Each war has also multiplied government expenditures and taxes; and to this rule the present one will certainly be no exception.
