(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) I. INTRODUCTION. IN a previous paper,1 The Behavior of Calcium Sulphate at Elevated Temperatures with Some Fluxes, we published the results of our investigation, into the behavior of calcium sul-phate in air; that, is, under oxidizing conditions. The results as a whole hold good for a neutral atmosphere, or one which has no chemical effect upon calcium sulphate. The present paper deals with the behavior of calcium sulphate under reducing conditions, the reducing-agents employed being carbon monoxide and carbon, and the changes the calcium sulphide formed undergoes when it is subjected to an oxidizing-roast. Technical literature deals very sparingly with the subject. The information furnished by the recent leading chemical manuals is general. Thus Dammer,2 Moissan,3 and Abbegg,4 quote Berthier as having reduced, in 1823, calcium sulphate with carbon, and Stammer as having done the same in 1851 with carbon monoxide; Gmelin Kraut 5 add Leplay and Laurent (1848) as third investigators. Metallurgical authorities confine their statements to the known fact of reduction by carbon. II. PREPARATION OF RAW MATERIALS. 1. "Heredity"1 in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mechanism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem. Normal and "Dendritic" Cast Iron As examples of variation in type of structure, photomicrographs of two test bars of cast iron are shown (Figs. 1 and 2) and the composition and properties are given in Table 1. Both are common, unalloyed gray iron. Test bar No. 13 has normal graphite flakes while No. 49 has very fine, lacy graphite arranged in a dendritic pattern, the matrix in both being pearlite. These two types of cast iron are well known to foundry-men and need no detailed description.

STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board. IT is scarcely necessary to augment or amend the "Appreciation" of Dr. Douglas, from the pen of Dr. Albert A. Ledoux, which appeared in January, 1916, in Bulletin -No. -109 of the Institute. The author of that admirable summary enjoyed the great privilege of expressing while Dr. Douglas was yet among us (though already marked for death) the love and esteem with which we all regarded him. But now that his earthly life has ended, the historian must still be the eulogist. No line need be added or deleted in the portrait of him already drawn; it has only to be accepted now as a true likeness, and hung in the gallery of the immortals, illuminated' by the crowning glory of another world. . James Douglas was born at Quebec, Canada, November 4, 18:37. His father, James Douglas, was a distinguished physician and surgeon, known in many lands, especially in the Orient, and famous in his own country for his philanthropy as well as his skill, having established and directed for many years the first retreat for the insane in the Dominion of Canada. One of the latest literary labors of the son was the editing and publishing of his father's journal and reminiscences-a fascinating volume, the review of which, though a tempting task, I must here forego. Nearly fifty years ago, I had the great pleasure of spending an hour with the elder. Douglas, who guided me through his collection of Egyptian and Asiatic treasures. I might almost say souvenirs; so many of them were connected with personal experiences and exalted personages. The veteran's memory had already begun to fail with age, but his vivacity and imagination glowed all the, more brightly; and his reminiscences of travel and adventure were embroidered with Oriental magnificence. I felt, after that hour, as if I had visited a stately, half-ruined edifice, overgrown with vines and flowers. The father's genius, adventurous spirit and generous philanthropy descended to his versatile, yet practical son. Like other men of such temperament, James Douglas tried many things before circumstances beyond his own control forced him into the line of his, principal lifework. At the age of 18, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh, where he studied for two years. Returning to Canada,, he entered Queen's University, at Kingston, Ontario, where he was graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1858. Subsequently he studied medicine at Laval University, Quebec;

Tin production and export from the Far East are still a long way off from the prewar figures. The Malayan Peninsula, which had a rather good start directly after the war largely because of stock piles found in Singapore and elsewhere, has since been hampered in the rehabilitation of its tin mines and dredging operations by material shortages and, more recently and more severely, by revolts and attacks of communist elements and gangster bands. These hindrances make working in the mines dangerous and form a daily threat against the valuable and highly vulnerable dredges. Contrary to the conditions in Malaya are those on the tin islands of Billiton, Banka, and Singkep-all in the Netherlands East Indies-where the Dutch have re-established peaceful relations with the population. Dutch efforts since the fall of 1945 have been rewarded by continuously increasing production, extension of production facilities, and return of moderate prosperity, complete safety, and all-out co-operation among the population ? native and Chinese ? to the benefit of all concerned.

Mixtures of fine GaSb and Gds as well as preal-loyed GaSbl,As, powders were hot-pressed at 690°C and 25,000 psi. Dense alloys with compositional gradients of less than 5 pct were obtained from mixtures containing about 20 mol pct GaAs. For x < 0.2, there were increasing compositional gradients, and for x > 0.2 a GaAs-rich second phase appeared in the microstructure. Densification as well as alloying wlechanisms were enhanced by dissociation and, possibly, oxidation reactions of the powders. Densification of coarse prealloyed material, however, primarily depended on plastic flow phenomena and required temperatures just below solidus and pressures of 50,000 psi Thermal and electrical properties were measured. Although in no case was the figure of merit of melt growth materials approached closer than to within 25 pct, the better overall thermoelectric properties were found in coarse-grained, prealloyed materzals which had been compacted to near theoretical density and where grain regrowth had been induced. Similar results are believed to hold in other binary 111-V compound systems if processed under similar conditions. The densification of unalloyed GaSb powders during pressure sintering (= hot pressing) was shown to depend strongly on powder particle size.&apos; Fine powders displayed a "liquid skin effect" that enhanced compaction through the presence of liquid gallium, whereas coarse powders compacted predominantly by plastic flow. The liquid skin effect, in particular, appeared attractive for alloying GaSb with other, higher-melting, III-V compounds, and to densify these in a one-step operation. This is of special interest in the case of III-V compound alloys as the conventional techniques of melt growth or long-time annealing of powders2 is very time-consuming, especially in cases where a large separation of liquidus and solidus can be expected, such as in GaSbl alloys.2 It was felt that experimentation with this system, a particularly unfavorable example, would allow us to extrapolate to several other, more favorable, cases. Uses of Ill-V alloys are most evident in thermoelectric energy conversion devices.&apos; For this reason certain thermal and electrical properties were measured and compared to those of melt-grown material and to hot-pressed prealloyed powders. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The pressure-sintering apparatus has been previously described.&apos; Using this equipment, both powder mixtures of GaSb with GaAs and prealloyed GaSbl-,As, powders were hot-pressed. The mixtures were pre- pared from cast GaSb and melt-grown GaAs. The prealloyed material was obtained from stoichiometric melts, initially heated to 1200°C in an evacuated quartz ampoule, and then annealed in the solidus-liquidus interval. A typical annealing cycle consisted of a heating to 850°C (1 hr), extended successive annealing at 750°C (65 hr), and slow stepwise cooling (25 hr) to below solidus. The GaSb, GaAs, and GaSbl-,As, materials were ground in a vibrational mill to particle sizes below 500 . A jet mill reduced these further where necessary. Fine powders were analyzed by Coulter counting for their size distribution. Average sizes by volume were calculated from the data. Mixing of the powders, where necessary, was carried out through rapid vibrational motion. The hot-pressing operation consisted of a degassing period of 15 hr, in most cases at 690°C, followed by several hours of compression, normally 25,000 psi at 690°C for powder mixtures and 50,000 psi at 710°C for prealloyed powders. The chemical compositions were confirmed by X-ray fluorescence analysis. To estimate the degree of solid solution achieved, lattice parameters were determined and interpreted according to Vegard&apos;s rule. In addition, optical microscopy helped to correlate the relative amounts of the phases present as well as the degree of porosity to the measured density. To reveal grain boundaries, polished surfaces were etched4 with H 2 O:H 2 O:HCl = 2:l:l. In several cases microscopic concentration gradients were monitored by electron-probe analysis-. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Alloying and Densification of GaSn-GaAs Powder Mixtures. After preliminary experiments showed that no appreciable alloying took place in mixtures of coarse GaSb (22.5 p) and fine GaAs (2.5 p) powders, hot pressing of mixtures was confined to fine powders only (3.1 and 2.4 p, respectively). Alloying and densification apparently occurred simultaneously with a grain regrowth mechanism which depended on the presence of a liquid phase.&apos; The liquid phase was provided by the dissociation of GasbS particles into liquid gallium and antimony above 555°C. This not only enhanced grain regrowth and densification, as in unalloyed GaSb,&apos; but took on additional importance here for the alloying process. Alloying was speeded up by the resulting liquid-solid interaction as compared to the very slow solid-state diffusion process normally expected at these temperatures.&apos; The results obtained with a series of powder mixtures have been compiled in Table I. It is seen that for mixtures with less than 20 mol pct GaAs, x < 0.2, the compositional ranges increased and for x > 0.2 a GaAs-rich phase and free antimony appeared in the microstructure in sizable amounts.

A JOINT meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held at Spokane, Wash., and Cranbrook and Kimberley, B. C., on Oct. 13 to 16, 1926, with a total attendance at one or another or all of the meetings of about 300 members, ladies and guests. At the opening meeting, on Oct. 13, in the Davenport Hotel, Spokane, about 175 were present. The morning was occupied with addresses of welcome by M. H. Sullivan for the Columbia Section, who called on Mayor Charles A. Fleming, President John F. Davies for the Chamber of Commerce, and E. R. Hannibal, president of the Associated Engineers, each of whom heartily welcomed the visitors. Philip N. Moore, former president, and special representative of President Samuel A. Taylor, replied for the A.I.M.E., and Lewis Stockett, president, and Charles A. Banks, chairman, British Columbia Division, Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and Henry M. Parks for the visiting A.I.M.E. sections, made appropriate responses on behalf of those they represented. The members and ladies had luncheon with the Associated Engineers. Philip N. Moore addressed the assembly on "The Opportunity of the Engineer"; an excerpt from his address appears on another page. At the afternoon meeting, with Lewis Stockett in the chair, Frank M. Smith was asked to make a brief statement of the proceedings of the Silver Producers Association in Denver. Supplementing his talk by placing a well-prepared statement on "Silver and the Plan of the Royal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance" in the hands of those present, he narrated what had been undertaken by the Silver Producers Association and what they hoped to accomplish.

The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental &apos;and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increasing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner&apos;s equipment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common &apos;languages&apos; which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

For years before the war, Coal had the reputation of being a sick industry. Currently it is operating at peak production and succeeding pretty well in keeping out of the red. But, says Mr. Weidenhammer, it will have a relapse as soon as the war ends unless (1) working capital can be built up; (2) it gets the support of the people and Congress; and (3) a truly long-range national fuel policy is formulated.

THE discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the, surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.1 The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment Is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth&apos;s field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as -is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.

BERYLLIUM is demanding more of the limelight, and the output of beryllium copper (containing 2% to~ 3 per cent of beryllium) seems to have grown 60 per cent above that of 1936, which was double that of 1935. There is increasing interest in beryllium-aluminum alloys and small quantities are being marketed at $50 per lb. for the contained beryllium. Other alloys also can be produced. Further price decreases for beryllium copper (now $23 per lb. for the contained beryllium) seem , possible and desirable. No difficulty has been experienced in obtaining beryl and a &apos;reserve stock has been built up. One supplier heretofore found reliable has offered to furnish 200 tons per month. Supplies during 1937 have come from the Black Hills in South Dakota, Colorado. India, and South America

I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, &apos; It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in&apos; the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act&apos; with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

LABOR. conditions have finally caused rock-drilling machines to supplant hand drillers in the Japanese mining industry, and have encouraged this study. During a period of three years 25,000 tests were made on 67 different American, Japanese, and European rock drills, using, respectively, the Paynter testing machine, and drilling in granite and limestone. Recorded were: air consumption, speed of rotation, torque of rotation, foot-pounds of striking energy, air pressures, input horsepowers, and speed of rock penetration. The author expresses his views on the interrelation of these factors and offers theoretical support, as well, by formulas based upon the mechanics of impact. He discusses the different designs of the valves, cylinders, piston hammers and rotation devices involved in the different types of rock drills, with respect to their merits and defects and offers conclusions about the factors that should be considered in the new design of a superior rock drill. The author&apos;s mathematical demonstrations and arguments for a value of "best feed clearance" of the drill bit from the rock are based upon the hand-operated screw-fed type of hammer drill. Automatic feeds have not been considered in this paper except for the tests on one drifter with air feed, 10 air-feed stopers, and some hand-held blockholers. The following classes of drills, with one of each model, size, or type, were tested: 23 heavy drifters, 34 light drifters and hand-held drills, and 10 stopers. Nearly fifty years ago, I had the great pleasure of spending an hour with the elder Douglas, who guided me through his collection of Egyptian and Asiatic treasures. I might almost say souvenirs; so many of them were connected with personal experiences and exalted personages. The veteran&apos;s memory had already begun to fail with age, but his vivacity and imagination glowed all the more brightly; and his reminiscences of travel and adventure were embroidered with Oriental magnificence. I felt, after that hour, as if I had visited a stately, half-ruined edifice, overgrown with vines and flowers. The father&apos;s genius, adventurous spirit and generous philanthropy descended to his versatile, yet practical son. Like other men of such temperament, James Douglas tried many things before circumstances beyond his own control forced him into the line of his principal lifework. At the age of 18, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh, where he studied for two years. Returning to Canada, he entered Queen&apos;s University, at Kingston, Ontario, where he was graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1858. Subsequently he studied medicine at Lava1 University, Quebec;

ON giving thought to the subject of this paper, my first reaction was that many and striking changes have come about as a direct result of the war. However, more careful analysis indicates that few, if any, of these changes can be wholly attributed to it. The actual situation is that all these changes were conceived and most of them at least partially executed in re- cent prewar years, it remaining the role of war to achieve results in a fraction of the time that might normally have been taken, lacking its driving impulse. The further discussion will therefore be with the premise that the individual changes have been greatly hastened rather than directly and primarily caused by any war conditions. Co-operation among copper alloy producers on production problems is agreed to be much worth while. The industry was too long noted for jealousy and secrecy as to equipment, methods, and even materials produced. Gradually, a more open and co-operative policy evolved but even just prior to the war the interchange of ideas was relatively cautious and limited. The need for a great increase in production in record time fostered a more co- operative attitude; exchange of ideas and experience concerning all phases of production increased tremendously to the benefit of the individual participants and thus the war effort, too. This more united effort has undoubtedly led to many specific improvements in process or equipment and these in turn to more rapid and economical operation than could have taken place on an each-for-himself basis.

World production of asbestos is estimated to be at a current level of almost 3.5 million tons, having more than doubled in the past ten years. A substantial part of the increase has been due to a rapid expansion in the Soviet Union. Production from that country during 1964 is estimated at 1.5 million tons and, as a consequence, Russia has displaced Canada as the leading world producer. Although traditionally the asbestos mining industry has been centered near Sverdlovsk in the Urals, two new producing areas have been under development for some time. It is expected that a new mine will be in operation in 1965 near Kiembi, Kazakhstan, some 300 miles south of Sverdlovsk, and an- other mine at Aktrovak in Tannu-Tuva, west of Lake Baikal. These developments will provide a significant increase in the production capability of Russia. Although internal consumption is expected to increase with the addition of new asbestos- cement producing facilities now under construction in Russia, there is some speculation that exports will also increase.
