Mining operations were in progress at the Shawangunk mine near Summitville, Sullivan County, N. Y. as early as 1843 and again as late as 1918. Difficulty in effecting mechanical separation of sphalerite and galena was the primary reason for abandonment by various operators. The Bureau of Mines investigated this mine by diamond drilling, sampling, and performing beneficiation tests. The investigation included the construction of 1.25 miles of access road and the completion of 6,526 feet of core drilling in 24 holes. In addition, 151 samples were taken in the mine. The investigation proved an extension of ore contiguous to the old mine workings and resulted in the discovery of another ore shoot at depth. The ore occurs as fissure filling in a fault zone and contains concentrations of zinc and lead sulfides with minor dissemination of chalcopyrite in a quartz gangue. Metallurgical tests indicate that the ore can be concentrated by selective flotation.

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. The following is a look at some of the mineral processing companies that will be at MINExpo. McLanahan Corp. McLanahan Corp. is an example of the changes in the sector. The crushing and grinding stalwart acquired Universal Engineering, expanding its traditional focus on soft mineral crushing to hard rock crushing. At MINExpo, it will be showing off three new pieces of equipment, the LabMill Crusher, the Rocker Tooth Crusher and the Recessed Filter Press.

Cyanide leaching of two West African gold ores was studied in multiple laboratories to provide process-engineering data for plant design purposes. Unusually slow leach extraction kinetics were observed using routine cyanide leach test procedures with pregnant solution monitoring. Carbon-in-leach testing, however, showed normal rapid kinetic behavior, with the same ultimate gold extractions being reached in much shorter elapsed times. Kinetic curves based on washed solids assays also exhibited more typical leaching characteristics. The results bore all the hallmarks of some equilibrium inhibition of the leaching. It was surmised that ore gangue components were responsible for weakly adsorbing gold-cyanide complex reaction product, thereby holding up soluble gold in the solid phase. The term ?preg-borrowing? was coined to describe the reversible phenomenon and distinguish it from irreversible preg-robbing. The two ores investigated may represent an extreme form of a more general effect that in most instances might pass unnoticed. The effect can lead to misinterpretation of kinetic leach curve data and underestimation of calculated ore head grades.

Cable reel systems for shuttle cars were investigated to determine whether an improved system could be identified. Interviews and mine visits were conducted to better define limitations and problems with present systems. Although simple and relatively inexpensive, present cable reel systems are not fully satisfactory. Several concepts for a different technical configuration were formulated and evaluated. An all ectric system using electronic control and external sensors was recommended for further development.

The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. For correctness, which takes on a major importance when it comes to sampling devices, some new, important principles that have been put forth by recent research, are described in details.CITATION:François-Bongarçon, D, 2014. The purpose of any steel-making process is to convert the two raw materials iron and scrap into steel. The chemical analysis of the steel is set within certain limits which involve the physical proper- ties desired by the consumer. In addition to tensile properties a large number of other properties are at the present time desired, such as impact resistance, grain size regulation, specific degrees of hardenability, resistance to creep at high temperatures, resistance to expansion on heat treatment, the ability of the product to undergo extreme amounts of cold deformation without failure, and many other properties which are not directly related to the specified chemical analysis. Variations in many of the properties of plain-carbon steels are due to elements and compounds not included in the ordinary "five element"§ composition. Such variations result primarily from variations in oxidation of the metal in the furnace and from the deoxidation method employed. The steel-making problem therefore resolves itself into two distinct sections: (I) the elimination of certain elements from the charge (the iron and scrap entering the furnace) and the addition of materials to meet the chemical specifications for the heat; (2) the manipulation of the slag and metal and the process of deoxidation to give certain desired properties in the steel entirely apart from the chemical analysis specified. "BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 88 million tons of copper ore per year through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. Over the past three years, metallurgical sampling has been performed at the Laguna Seca concentrator to calibrate both the JKSimMet and JKSimFloat grinding and flotation simulators. In the past, the calibrated simulators have been used to predict the effect of changes in operating conditions in the grinding and flotation circuits separately. To assist in the development of future processing options, predictions were required of the effect of changing grinding circuit conditions on flotation performance. This was achieved by using an integrated grinding and flotation simulation. The grinding circuit performance was predicted under different operating conditions (such as tonnage rate and product grind size) using JKSimMet, and these results were then used in JKSimFloat to predict the flotation performance for the new grinding circuit product. This combination of the simulators allows both the effects of residence time and grind size on flotation performance to be investigated.This paper presents the first combined grinding and simulation modelling and simulation case study using JKSimMet and JKSimFloat. The modelling and simulation methodologies for the grinding and flotation circuits are discussed along with the circuit simulations that were performed. The simulator predictions are presented in conjunction with independent laboratory results of the new operating conditions. The ability to predict flotation circuit performance based on changes in grinding circuit performance is also discussed. This methodology provides improved predictions of flotation circuit performance when grinding circuit changes (including grinding capacity increases) are made.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, the grinding and flotation research groups at the Julius Krutschnitt Minerals Research Centre - JKMRC (Brisbane, Australia), University of Cape Town (Cape Town, South Africa) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) have been developing a methodology for optimising grinding and flotation plants using actual plant data together with semi-empirical sub-process models. The project is being conducted as part of the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project, titled “The Optimisation of Mineral Processes by Modelling and Simulation”. The project first commenced in 1962 and is currently in its “Nth” phase."

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought

A significant portion of the piling industry has long felt relying on soil setup to gain the required capacity is a complexity that would rather not be dealt with. Instead, the pile are driven to the required capacity on the initial drive and the potential gain of capacity due to soil setup is simply considered an added bonus or safety factor. There appears to be an attitude that if one did not put in the energy required to develop the full capacity on the initial drive, then one should not expect to gain anything from Mother Nature for free. However, substantial savings in time and materials can be realized by properly accounting for setup. This paper will show the impacts and ramifications this rationale can have on required labor and material costs and illustrate a case history with significant soil setup and the savings realized on a project currently being constructed.

This paper reports a solid oxide membrane (SOM) electrolysis experiment using an LSM– Inconel inert anode current collector for production of Mg and O2 at 1423K. The electrochemical performance of the SOM cell was evaluated by using various electrochemical techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic scans, and potentiostatic electrolysis. The effects of Mg solubility in the flux on the current efficiency and the YSZ membrane stability during SOM electrolysis were discussed and examined through experiment and modeling. The electronic transference number of the flux were measured to assess the Mg dissolution in the flux during SOM electrolysis. A negative correlation between the electronic transference number of the flux and the current efficiency of the SOM electrolysis was observed.

The concept of sustainable development has been evolved into a working framework for sustainable manufacturing, in which the environmental requirements are introduced into product development at the design stage. This keynote paper is discussing a number of issues pertaining to the impact of manufacturing on the environment. The conflicting requirements of sustainable development, sustainable manufacturing (SM) and economical growth are presented in the light of successful case studies that were able to convert conflicts into opportunities. Integration of SM into the product life cycle is also presented. A number of concepts that are related to Ecoefficiency, e.g., inverse manufacturing, demanufacturing and re-manufacturing are also discussed. The paper underlines the fact that the positive impact of this new philosophy is equally applicable and beneficial to both; developed and developing countries. The paper concludes with an overview of Global trends in environmentally benign manufacturing (EBM); e.g., product-take back and emerging material and processing technologies. The state-of-the-art approach to Life Cycle Impact Assessment and integration of design for the environment DfE principles are demonstrated through some case study.

The limiting criterion in the use of stainless steel for certain forming operations such as coining is its hardness, which determines parameters such as required striking pressure, wear on dies, and integrity of pattern detail. Attention is given here to the development of ultra-soft ferritic stainless steels for coinage. In the first instance, the influence of carbon content on the striking properties of a series of commercial and experimental 17%Cr alloys was evaluated. It was found that a lower carbon content permitted the striking of relatively highly profiled and intricate patterns, provided that the hardness did not exceed 125 HV. Hardnesses as low as 115 HV were achieved in the fully annealed condition, but these alloys required high striking pressures. In a further study, three grades of experimental 14%Cr ferritic stainless steels were produced with a view to optimizing the ductility. When the residual impurities were minimized, hardness values of about 100 HV and lower were achieved. Micro-alloying additions allowed the heat-treatment response and grain size to be controlled. Excellent tensile properties, with elongations of up to 42 per cent, were achieved in the fuly annealed condition, and highly profiled patterns were produced in coining trials.

The paper looks at the basic theory of tri-bological wear and the role played by the lubricant and its additives. It presents the argument that the “real cost of lubrication” is not the purchase price of the oil or grease, but rather the costs associated with not using the correct lubricant. A number of examples are presented, covering oils, greases and additives, in which a detailed evaluation of the application has shown that when all of the benefits of using the best lubricant/additive are evaluated, the savings achievable greatly surpass the incremental cost of the superior lubricant. One of the emerging classifications of costs in industry today are those associated with environmental protection. Two of the examples used describe the replacement of more conventional lubricants with environmentally acceptable products, compounded to compete in all aspects of serviceability, but which have the added bonus of being not only biodegradable but also of being of low toxicity.

Tin deposits in Catron County, New Mexico, were explored by the Bureau of Mines under authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of August 1939. The investigation covered both lode and placer deposits and was later extended to deposits in Sierra County. Six of the known deposits were examined by E. D. Gardner, supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, and S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, in June and July 1939. It was recommended that the more promising occurrences be explored by test pitting, trenching, and sampling. Field work, under supervision of M. E. Volin, began in September and continued through December 1939. The area was mapped by Carl Fries, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1939 and 1940. The La Cruz Development Co. acquired control of the Squaw Creek placer claims in 1942 and began active sampling and development preliminary to large-scale operations. The result of this work showed a considerably higher tin content than that found by the Bureau of Mines in 1939. Because of this report and reports from other parts of the district that large-scale operations for the production of tin from lode deposits were possible, it was recommended that the Bureau of Mines resample parts of Squaw Creek and conduct a mill test of lode material to determine whether a concentrate could be made that was high enough in tin and low enough in iron to be acceptable in American smelting practice. This work, under the supervision of Paul L. Russell, was begun in November 1942 and completed in January 1943, during which time the Sierra Metals Co. acquired control of a large area in Sawmill Canyon. At the suggestion of the Federal Geological Survey and the War Production Board, which had reason to believe that a great deal of commercial material existed on certain flatlands and gully slopes, the project was extended to include test pitting and sampling of those areas. This work was completed in February 1943.

Systematic practices for protecting crops from frost damage began in the United Metes more then 40 years ago when the Weather Bureau Fruit-Frost Warning Service was organized; however, various practices employed in frost protection are centuries old. Although there are areas where little doubt exists as to whether protection is needed, there are also circumstances where there is some doubt as to the need for frost protection. Many factors influence this, including not only critical temperatures but also the maturity dates of the crops relative to marketing. Critical temperatures for frost damage to trees, plants, blossoms, and fruits very with weather, plant variety and nutrition, and stage of growth. In the case of truck crops, a single night of protection from frost injury might yield big dividends with a variety of sweet corn or tomato that matures early while price is high yet be worth very little with a midseason or late-maturing variety. Consequently, it is the individual grower who must decide whether to use frost-protective measures on the basis of his returns, the quantity and quality of his crop, the marketing situation, the sensitivity of his crops to frost damage, and the frequency of damaging frost in his area.
