The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL), investigated a means to evaluate the potential impact of surface conditions above underground mines on emergency response activities. Recent events have highlighted the need to conduct critical emergency operations on the surface above underground work areas. Accessibility and usability of the surface, such as the ability to drill holes or deploy seismic monitoring or through the earth communications systems, are an important consideration for emergency response planning. This paper identifies critical surface conditions such as: surface waters, valley fill, highways, railroads and significant structures that must be considered in emergency response planning and in the conduct of emergency operations as they relate specifically to the seismic detection of trapped underground miners. Results of case studies indicate a need to consider the impact surface conditions may have on emergency response capabilities.

Due to the constant need to improve SAG mill performance and efficiency, extensive research into all aspects of SAG mill optimization has been performed. This paper will review the current evolution of SAG mill shell liner design and their performance at the Copperton Concentrator. The effect of these liner design changes will be discussed with respect to: • Liner configurations • Mill operating performance, i.e., throughput, power draw, mill control • Mill mechanical performance, i.e., liner wear profiles, liner life, liner breakage, liner hardness • Foundry manufacturing considerations • Economic evaluation of throughput versus liner life This paper will discuss the results of Kennecott Utah Copper’s (KUC) and ME International’s (MEI) test work, providing an insight into the past, present and potential future opportunities of SAG mill liner design.

By using the data of E.A. Hersam and F.C. Bond's equation for energy consumption in comminution, a method was developed to analyze the performance of industrial jaw crushers. The study showed that industrial jaw crushers are generally operated below capacity. The study also showed that industrial jaw crushers generally have sufficient installed power to operate at, full capacity. The method presented can be used to estimate the capacities and power requirements of jaw crushers.

Introduction Continuous monitoring techniques have been used in the US and abroad for many years. A continuous miner has a monitor that measures methane and automatically gives a warning if the methane exceeds 1%. It deenergizes the continuous mining machine automatically at a maximum concentration of 2%. Main fans are also continually monitored to ensure operation. Alarms may also be given at a remote location should a fan slow or stop. The systems being developed can continuously monitor various gases and equipment throughout the mine and transmit pertinent data to a surface monitoring station. At this station, conditions throughout the mine can be monitored and, in some instances, controlled. These are known as Mine Wide Monitoring Systems (MWMS). History The use of environmental monitoring systems began in 1976 when a federal court approved the petition of modification to use belt air at the face. The first mine to receive a modification did install a system to supplement existing safeguards. Later, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted tests dealing with the use of belt air. Findings from these tests are being used to set guidelines as requirements of a petition. These requirements include: • Velocity of air has to be 0.25 to 1.5 m/sec (50 to 300 fpm); • Monitors will be installed at each belt drive and tailpiece and at intervals not to exceed 610 m (2000 ft); and • An alarm level of 10 ppm, above the ambient level is appropriate. The early uses of environmental monitoring could only be used outby the last open crosscut. That may be a reason for an initial slow growth of these systems. In June 1982, MSHA began evaluating systems that could be used in returns to ensure that monitoring systems being used in areas where permissible equipment is required does not of itself pose an explosion hazard. This is known as the Mine Wide Monitoring Systems Evaluations and Sensor Classification program. The evaluations and classifications granted are based on electric currents and voltages. Use of mine wide monitoring systems The environmental aspect of MWMS in today's coal industry deals with carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and air velocity. Just as all mines are different and encounter different problems, the MWMS are diverse and can be used to provide necessary data in all areas of coal mines. Mine operators in an ultragassy seam, for example, may be concerned with monitoring methane, while a mine that used diesel equipment may want to continuously monitor for diesel contaminants. In a mine with roof fall problems, airflow monitors may be helpful as an indication of whether the air is flowing in its normal course and at its normal volume. Today's MWMS can monitor any or all of these parameters. Most systems can be expanded as mining needs require. For example, a mine is now being monitored for methane and five years from now CO monitoring would help increase safety. It may be possible to use the same system by adding additional equipment. In the US, 30 environmental monitoring systems were installed from May 1985 through May 1986. In 1984 and 1985, there were 38 and 44 environmental monitoring systems in operation, respectively. Due to mine closings, 11 of these are no longer in use. However, the number of mines using environmental monitoring systems increased to 63. Todays End of Life vehicles are shredded and their metal components recovered and recycled by standard methods. The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

Equipment-washing facilities at Freeport-McMo-Ran?s Sierrita Mine in Arizona produce a mixture of oil and water that was difficult to dispose of easily or cheaply. However, after some changes in the facility, waste oil is now used as part of the mining process. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., head-quartered in Phoenix, AZ, operates copper, gold and molybdenum mines. It is the world?s largest producer of molybdenum. Heavy equipment used at the mine is hosed off periodically in the wash bay. The dirty water and oil mixture drains into the sump next to the bay. Oil was manually collected for disposal. This was a tedious and dirty process Mine managers sought a more efficient method of removing the oil. Instead of spending the time and effort skimming the tank with vacuums or sorbents, they enlisted the help of Abanaki Corp., manufacturer of the Model 4 Oil Grabber. Engineers designed the sump to utilize prevailing winds to blow the oil to one corner. This was the ideal place for the Abanaki skimmer. The skimmer removes the oil and discharges it into a plastic storage container. ?This reduces the time needed to keep the area clean, and the staff can focus on cleaning the equipment rather than worrying about the oil,? according to Jay Salerno, construction manager at the Sierrita Mine. Salerno is considering adding an optional oil concentrator to the skimmer to make the process even more efficient. The concentrator would remove any water picked up by the belt and return it to the sump, leaving nearly pure oil for disposal. Because the mine is located in the Sonoran desert, most of the water evaporates in the hot, dry air and is not reused.

It is uncommon these days to read a business magazine or newspaper without finding a reference to Knowledge Management (KM), and its critical importance to corporate success. One definition of KM is: “getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping them to put information into action in such ways that strive to improve organizational performance.” In the minerals processing industry we could assert that we have been practicing this for years through effective operator training. In most cases we would probably be wrong. Training has certainly filled the need of addressing safety and basic operational issues, but we must collectively focus on education (learning), and the difference, as measured in outcomes, is not at all subtle. This paper briefly examines the history of training and education in the mining industry, and looks in more detail at the impact of one company’s approach to empower its workforce, while keeping the ultimate goal clearly in mind: “The great end of knowledge is not knowledge, but action.” (T.H. The two-dimensional predominance area (Kellogg) diagram (PAD) surfaces bounding the three-dimensional Cu-As-S-O system were constructed at 900 K. The computations employed gases As4O6(g), O2(g), and SO2(g) as the independent coordinate species to generate diagrams of As4O6(g) − O2(g),O2(g) − SO2(g), and As4O6(g) − SO2(g), while the third gas (As4O6, O2, or SO2) was fixed. The results indicate that there is no shared boundary between enargite (Cu3AsS4) and copper sulfate (CuSO4); however, at PO2 < 10−6 atm, PAs4O6 < 10−10 atm, and PSO2 > 10−4 atm, CuSO4 is the stable phase at 900 K. The chemical driving force for oxidation of intermediate phases between enargite and copper sulfate is substantial except for basic sulfate (CuO · CuSO4).

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today&apos;s highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada&apos;s mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

Large reserves of feldspar ore exist in the Aegean region of Turkey. The main colored impurities in these ores are iron- and titanium-bearing minerals such as anatase, rutile, sphene and ilmenite. In this study, a potassium feldspar ore containing mainly quartz and coloring impurities was subjected to beneficiation tests involving magnetic separation and flotation, which were applied either separately or in combination. Bench-scale flotation experiments using cationic collectors G-TAP and Flotigam V-4343 and using HF and H2SO4 as modifiers were employed to separate feldspar from quartz and to remove part of the titanium impurities. The best results were achieved with a combination of high-intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation. A feldspar concentrate containing 16.28% Al2O3, 10.75% K2O, 2.84% Na2O, 69.97% SiO2 and 0.16% Fe2O3 was produced. A quartz concentrate containing 2.30% Al2O3, 0.48% K2O, 0.42% Na2O, 0.07% Fe2O3 and 96.20% SiO2 was also obtained

Measured in Btu terms, the industry is the country’s leading energy producer and an important exporter. Foreign coal sales yield annual proceeds of about $4 billion. Coal’s one-fifth share of the nation’s energy consumption is nearly as high as that of natural gas. Coal is the electric utility sector’s principal fuel supplier. It accounts for about55% of the electricity generated at power stations.

Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

In October 1999, Liebherr-America, Liebherr Construction and Liebherr Mining Equipment held anopen house at its Newport News, VA, plant. The open house was held to celebrate the company’s50th anniversary and to demonstrate the new TI 272mining truck. Attending the open house members of the media, vendors and company representatives from all over the world. In his introductory comments, company president Peter Eller announced Liebherr’s dedication to expanding its presence in North America. Liebherr now has 30 dealers across the United States. As part of the open house, a brief history of Liebherr was presented, beginning with its creation in1949. Liebherr engineering and sales representatives were available to answer questions.

The 20th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker is J. David Lowell, one of the preeminent exploration geologists of the past 30 years. Among his most recent discoveries is the world-class Pierina gold deposit in Peru, currently owned and operated by Barrick Gold. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Howard Allen Twitty, Sr., and Bernhardt Rohe. Twitty was a respected public lands attorney. He made significant contributions to the mining industry by representing several major companies in many court cases. He was also the author of numerous papers on mining law. Rohe was managing director of Peñoles. In that position, he helped guide the Mexican mining company for its growth into the international mining company that it is today.

As a preventive action, the geotechnical department at the mine analyzed the original topography overlying a conveyor tunnel at the mine. Several dewatering drains were installed to intercept water collecting from an old lakebed. Subsequently, 20 steel arches were installed to provide additional support in an area of tunnel where original geological mapping indicated Type IV rock. This project was completed ontime with no loss to production. Construction schedules had to be developed to half hour precision, to accommodate the installation.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the three-dimensional surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. In this paper, the authors discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining.
