Recent accidents in the United States underground Coal Mines and the on-going carnage in Underground Chinese Coal Mines has shown the danger associated with the lack of communication infrastructures in an underground environment. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have introduced legislation that states all Underground Coal Mines must have two-way voice and personnel tracking capabilities by 2009. If Coal Mining companies are being forced to deal with this problem Tunneling Companies will not be far behind. This paper will examine current practices and best case technology to deal with these issues.

Arsenic sulfide [orpiment, realgar, amorphous AsS and As2S3] oxidation rates were measured in mixed flow reactors at pH~2 and temperature of 25-30oC. The measured oxidation rates for arsenic sulfide solids by dissolved oxygen are in the range of 10-11 to 10-10 mole m-2 s-1 after being normalized to final surface area. The order of arsenic sulfide oxidation rates decreases at pH~2 from amorphous AsS > realgar > orpiment > amorphous As2S3. In comparison to pyrite, arsenic sulfide oxidation rates are approximately 1.5 to 15 times slower than pyrite oxidation rates at pH~2.

A new water treatment plant is to be constructed for a portion of the water supply system of New York City. The project includes construction of new water conveyance tunnels crossing perpendicular and sub-parallel to the existing pressurized water tunnel at two locations. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of new tunnel construction on stability of the existing tunnel and hydrojacking potential in the surrounding rock mass. This paper introduces a practical approach to evaluate tunnel interaction, expressed in terms of rock-liner interaction, stress-induced stability and hydrojacking failures. A simple method to evaluate hydraulic and mechanical properties of concrete liners and jointed rock mass is also presented.

"The Kittilä underground mine in northern Finland is extracting one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittilä achieved commercial production on May 1, 2009, becoming Agnico Eagle’s first mine to open outside of Canada. The Kittilä orebodies were initially mined from two openpits – Suuri and Roura – and underground operations were added in October 2010. The pits were mined out in November 2012, so mining is now entirely underground in the Suuri and Roura deposits. Additional, small openpits will mine any remaining near-surface reserves in the future.The Kittilä Mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland, approximately 900 km (560 miles) north of Helsinki and 150 km (93 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. With a mine life estimated through 2034, Kittilä is Agnico’s longest-life mine.The mine’s proven and probable reserves contain 32 Mt (4.7 million oz) at 4.6 g/t (0.13 oz/ st) gold. Ore has been mined from underground since 2010. The original 3 kt/d (3,300 stpd) operation underwent an expansion project to increase the throughput capacity of the mill by 1 kt/d (1,100 stpd), starting by the end of 2014.The region around the Kittilä Mine is underlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Kittilä Greenstone Belt oriented nearly vertical. This greenstone belt is similar to those hosting Agnico Eagle’s Canadian deposits in Quebec’s Abitibi region and Nunavut. At the contact point between ironrich and magnesium-rich rocks lies a 100- to 200- m (330- to 660-ft) thick structural zone known as the Suurikuusikko Trend. This trend hosts the Kittilä deposit, where multiple mineralized zones have been traced over a strike length of more than 25 km (15 miles).Most of Agnico Eagle’s work has focused on a 4.5-km (2-mile) segment of the Suurikuusikko Trend that hosts the five main zones of the known gold reserves and resources. From south to north they are: Ketola, Etela, Suuri, Roura and Rimpi.The ore at the Kittilä Mine is refractory, making gold extraction relatively difficult because the gold is generally locked inside the two main sulfide minerals – arsenopyrite and arsenic-rich pyrite. Only about 4 percent is very fine-grained “free gold” (not locked in sulfide grains) and easier to extract. Most of this free gold is found in the outer, oxidized or eroded sections of the ore."

Significant effort was made in 2003 and 2004 to upgrade the existing instrumentation and process control infrastructure at the Phelps Dodge Bagdad copper concentrator. Specifically, • cameras were installed on the feed belt for online image analysis data, • ultrasonic level sensors were installed for froth height and sump level control, • a trial froth image system was installed on one of the rougher rows, and • a new expert system to tie everything together was integrated and tuned in-house. Control philosophy, observations, opinions, and general tips and tricks are discussed with the hope of assisting other plant personnel and expert system integrators.

The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

"History can provide many answers with regard to what today’s mining industry looks like and how we got to where we are today. It has always been self-evident that safety has to be given the highest priority and, throughout history, many mine workers have been injured, become ill and have even sacrificed their lives due to the way in which attempts have been made to extract the ore, often due to ignorance of the dangers being faced. In more recent stages of history we have seen certain dangers being compensated by means of higher wages and bonus systems in order to have the work carried out: one example of this is when the rock heating method was employed and the men who first went underground to put out the fires that were burning, were paid extra. The working conditions, to which these people were exposed, with smoke-filled closed spaces, shortened their life expectancy considerably and today we can ask ourselves whether it is really possible to value these efforts just by higher wages. In all mines worldwide the working environment has been improved and many mining companies have a zero vision where work-related injuries and accidents are concerned. Despite this, incidents of varying severity still occur and a continuous improvement process and ongoing training is necessary in order to constantly minimise risks and improve the working environment. Atlas Copco takes this into account in all its development and we not only review our own production units but also the needs of our customers, with regard to the machinery that is produced in order to cater for customers’ safety and production objectives. Underground mining probably started at the beginning of the 11th century when people with modest tools tried to extract ores that were present in the bedrock. Methodology has developed enormously over the years with a strong focus on increased efficiency and higher production. In different parts of the world the development is driven forwards at different rates depending on which controlling factors are regarded as necessary. Political decisions, profit goals and productivity have partly controlled the development, but the greatest factor where improvement is concerned still remains with increased understanding of the totality. During more than 1000 years since underground mining has been conducted, all individuals at all levels have constantly improved their expertise and the human element has been of great importance with regard to the development that has been made, even though technology often occupies a leading role when we describe the improvements made."

INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it. A new comprehensive insitu instrumentation technique named this RCC Method has been developed for rapid assessment and improvement of the structural stability of underground openings. When applied to tunnel construction, the degree of present and prospective safety of underground openings can be determined in quantitative terms within 10 to 20 minutes of microcreep observation. When applied to mining, roofs and floors can be stabilized by controlling the stress conditions. This stress control method has eliminated the need for intensive roof bolting and extensive floor renewal in all cases where it was applied. Use of this technique is illustrated by field examples from the Seikan Undersea Tunnel of Japan and deep potash mining in Canada. NEW INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUE: THE RCC METHOD Failure problems in underground excavation usually arise in weak non-elastic grounds where conventional rock mechanics theories of elasticity are not only useless but also misleading. Presently, discontinuity planes in the ground are being considered a factor in assessing these failure problems, and while this development is interesting academically, it is not of much use in actual excavation work, where it is nearly impossible to identify and quantize all existing planes of discontinuity. Even if such an extraordinary task could be accomplished at an underground excavation site, effective use of the data would be difficult and impractical for rapid excavation work, with the possible exception of rare cases of ideally elastic ground.

Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Magnetic surveying and map production is well established in land based mineral exploration. Magnetic data are routinely used to map geology in covered terrains, to estimate the depth to basement in overburden covered areas, and to identify altered zones, mineralization, bedding attitudes, and fault networks both regionally in map view, and through interpretation to depth in 3D. Best practices for magnetic survey methods and magnetic interpretation exist in all areas of land based geophysical survey methodology - mineral exploration, hydrocarbon exploration, geological mapping, archeological mapping, and in military applications. At sea, and particularly under the sea, sophisticated magnetic surveys are being done, but it can be argued that these are primarily in niche applications, for example in naval mine-hunting and UXO applications. Magnetic data is not normally collected on AUVs and ROVs conducting mapping and hydrographic survey operations. OFG has developed physical and mathematical calibration routines so that magnetometers can be mounted directly onto AUV and ROV bodies where significant heading errors and magnetic gradients exist. This simplifies the routine deployment of magnetometers on AUVs and ROVs for mineral exploration and other magnetic survey applications without the need for towed bodies, ungainly mounting frames, or degaussing of the survey equipment. Our experience shows that magnetometers can be operated routinely on AUVs and ROVs and that with careful processing useful maps can be produced routinely at low cost.

The use of virtual reality (VR) technologies to train miners is an evolving area in research and development. In July 2006, representatives of 14 international organizations met to discuss current VR-related efforts and explore ways to employ VR in the future. This paper gives an overview of the various approaches presented at the meeting and discusses directions for future implementation. An example of a training package that teaches mine map-reading skills is presented. The meeting was the first step to building collaborations for furthering VR applications for mining. Planning has begun for a 2008 meeting open to broader participation.

Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

K+S is one of the world’s leading suppliers of standard and specialty fertilizers. In the salt business, K+S, with sites in Europe as well as North and South America, is the world’s leading producer. The mine sites of K+S are distributed all over the world producing mainly potash and magnesium salts and rock salt. Focus is on the sustainable use of the natural deposits in order to stay competitive. For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

Copper and cobalt can be found on nickel laterite ores, and cobalt can be found also on copper ores, and many contaminants such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium are associated with these ores. In hydrometallurgical process, a purification step is necessary after leaching due to the presence of these impurities. Chelating resins are more selective for some metals than others, making them more efficient than cationic resins. This overview discusses chelating resin applications to recover copper, nickel, and cobalt from mining process and mining tailings and the effect of contaminants in leach solution. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate functional group can be used for selective copper recovery, and both iminodiacetate and bis-picolylamine resins are highly selective for nickel and cobalt. Chelating resins with the same functional group can have different performances on the kinetics of loading, because of variations of structure, the density of functional group, and degree of cross-linking. This article reviews commercial chelating resins that can be applied in leach solutions with different compositions, and also possible innovations for uses of chelating resins to recover metals from mining process and mining tailings.

When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.
