Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

On the east side of Washington DC, the DC Water & Sewer Authority is developing a Facility Plan for the Anacostia River CSO Control Projects, including 8 to 12 miles of CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief tunnels and associated facilities. The project includes major technical and non-technical challenges, including: completion under a Federal Consent Decree schedule; large diameter (estimated 25 to 35 ft) soft ground tunnels and shafts up to 200 ft depth; operations without use of active flow control systems; and close coordination with several major public and private construction and development projects that are being advanced in the project area.

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. Rhenish lignite will continue to play an indispensible role in the energy mix of the German Federal Republic for a long time to come. The use of lignite for electricity generation, upgrading and, if necessary, as a raw material is geared to the long term. The holistic management of opencast mines underpinned by approval law in the long term and a stronger focus on man, the environment and nature contribute to the acceptance of the mines by the local population. The same is true of state-of-the-art lignite uses: as regards their operational flexibility, lignite-fired power plants are ideal partners for the expansion of renewables. It is along these lines that RWE is continuing its power plant renewal programme as planned. With a view to that which will be conceivable the day after tomorrow, RWE is researching future technologies today in order to meet objectives such as security of supply, profitability and environmental compatibility to the same extent in the long term. Another important contribution to acceptance is public transparency and communications as means to support approval procedures and the implementation of measures in all areas related to lignite mining and utilization.

Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

A change of support model consists of a procedure to change a stationary histogram at a small data scale to represent a larger scale; typically a distribution of sample drill-hole data is changed to represent a chosen selective mining unit (SMU) scale. Most grade variables average arithmetically. Thus, the mean stays the same for different scales, and the variance changes according to well-established theory using average variogram values. The longstanding challenge has been to predict how the shape of the histogram changes. The discrete gaussian model is widely used because it appears reasonable and introduces few artifacts; there are no artificial minimum/maximum values and the target mean and variance are reproduced exactly. The resulting distribution shape, however, is strongly dependent on a multivariate gaussian distribution. The authors generalize the approach by taking advantage of a property of the isofactorial model, which allows one to specify where the random function falls on the spectrum between a low-entropy mosaic model and a maximum-entropy diffusion model. A measure of dissemination (MD) is computed using a ratio of the madogram and the variogram. The change of support algorithm is developed that uses a variable measure of dissemination (VMD) that is easily calculated and fit to data from the deposit. The resulting VMD change of support model is very flexible to represent different mineralization styles encountered in practice; global predictions of recoverable reserves are more accurate and decision-making is improved. A number of real examples are shown to demonstrate the approach.

Large heap leach operations around the world contain significant under-leached metal values that present recovery challenges to operators. The first challenge is to find the location of the highest inventory. High resolution resistivity ? has proven sensitive enough to detect such zones in the interior of heap leach pads to target treatment or re-leaching. Newmont Mining Corp. has adapted the high pressure fracturing technology, used in oil wells to stimulate select zones in heap leach pads to add reagents in 3-D for re-leaching, changing zonal chemistry for improved recovery and heap closure. High Resolution Resistivity ? is able to subsequently monitor injected solution flow and determine directional permeability during Hydro-Jex stimulation. The combination of these technologies has shown strong economic success, for selecting targets in the heaps and monitoring solution application. These technologies are now available to the mining industry for adoption.

The New South Ferry Terminal in the New York City Transit system represents an important milestone for the city. This is the first station designed and built in the 21st century. The design of the fire safety system included relying on Computational Fluid Dynamics to analyze the dispersion of heat and smoke, and modelling of people egress to determine the egress requirements. The project also looked into how to protect the structure from the heat exposure in order to meet the fire rating requirements. This paper provides an overview of the fire safety design approach taken to design the new South Ferry Terminal station in lower Manhattan and looks into fire modelling, structural fire protection, and station evacuation.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. Booster fans, large underground fans, can increase the volumetric efficiency of ventilation systems by helping to balance the pressure and quantity distribution throughout a mine, reducing leakage and reducing the total power requirement. However, in ventilation systems that use booster fans there is a potential for system recirculation, the leakage of return air to intake air, and also for localized recirculation near the fan through the bulkhead and airlock doors. Air that is recirculated locally decreases the system efficiency because the quantity of air flow through the fan increases without increasing the airflow throughout the system. To understand the detailed flow characteristics of a ventilation system with a booster fan, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed using the software Ansys-FLUENT. Though two-dimensional models do not represent the full complexity of the flow dynamics, they do provide a good representation of the flow characteristics and they allow for a qualitative analysis of how the flow dynamics are affected by the system characteristics. The CFD models were used to evaluate how the number of booster fans, the booster fan placement, the location and geometry of the fan installation and the construction of the airlock system affect the flow characteristics and the localized efficiency of the ventilation system.

For most industrial minerals, the color is directly associated with economic value. In terms of physics, the principal property that defines the term ?color? is the intensity of light reflected (or transmitted) by an object over the visible band, comprehended between 400 and 700 nm. This reflectance spectrum serves as the starting point for a variety of color-describing factors, the most common in the mineral industry being the brightness (TAPPI, 1977 and 1986) and the L*a*b* system (HunterLab, 2008). Quality specifications for mineral products are usually based on these colorimetric parameters. This market is becoming increasingly more selective and demanding over the quality of raw materials and alongside the traditionally controlled characteristics, such as particle size distribution and chemical composition, a trend exists towards the establishment of increasingly more strict specifications for the optical properties of these materials. This is due to the fact that most plants consuming these industrial minerals incorporate them into products in which the visual appearance is controlled. For these plants, most of them being the manufacturers of plastics, paper, paints, and ceramics, variations in the color of mineral materials result in difficulties to achieve the right color in the final product. Therefore, these plants set strict specifications for colorimetric parameters such as whiteness and yellowness, as well as colorimetric coordinates like L*, a*, and b*. For the manufacturer of industrial minerals, this translates into difficulties simply because many of these parameters are usually alien to the tradition of the mining industry. The main quality parameter in the kaolin industry is brightness, which is a weighted average of reflectance values over the range of 400-510 nm (TAPPI, 1977). Due to the lack of a better property, producers tend to use brightness to also assess the quality of the in situ ore and along the processing operations. However, the unprocessed kaolin is often accompanied by ?contaminant? minerals. For Brazilian kaolins, which are the object of this study, the most important contaminants are hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeOOH), and anatase (TiO2). Each of these contaminant minerals has a distinct color and behaves differently during the processing of the kaolin ore. Hematite and goethite in particular are particularly strong pigmenting agents and at concentrations as low as 100 ppm they can make the difference between a high-quality white pigment product for paper coating and waste material. As each Fe-bearing contaminant has a different color and responds differently to processing operations (for example, magnetic separation, chemical bleaching, selective flocculation, and/or flotation in the case of kaolin), the in situ brightness tends to show a poor correlation with the brightness of the final product. Brightness measurements are sometimes complemented with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of Fe and Ti, but the total oxide content provided by XRF is also poorly correlated with product quality because Fe may be in the form of goethite, hematite, or inside the crystalline structure of kaolinite. Thus, a more robust technique capable of distinguishing each mineral phase is desirable. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has been used to analyze iron oxide/hydroxide content both qualitatively (Torrent and Barrón, 2003; Liu et al., 2011) and quantitatively (Jiet al., 2002 and 2006). These authors correlate slopes and inflection points at characteristic absorption bands with oxide/hydroxide content in natural soils. The approach presented here involves the extensive use of the Kubelka-Munk (K-M) theory, which has been used for color matching (Schabbachet al., 2009 and 2011) and particle size determination (Otsuka, 2004) in a simplified version. Unfortunately, the scattering constant S is very difficult to measure for dry powders, because the equations require a thin layer of material. Attempts have been made (Gonçalves and Petter, 2007, and Gonçalves, 2009) but the experimental errors tend to be high. Thus, this paper aims to develop a tool for the quantification of contaminant minerals in kaolin based on the K-M theory without resorting to measurements over thin layers. This tool is based on a new two-constant approach, which takes into account differences in scattering between materials over the whole measured spectrum. The experimental dataset consists of the reflectance spectra of mixtures between a bleached kaolin and synthetic Fe pigments.

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

INTRODUCTION Crude oil reserves in the United States are still very large, even though for many years they have not been sufficient to supply our entire domestic requirements. They are continuously being depleted as oil is pumped from the ground, but new discoveries and improved secondary and tertiary recovery methods are helping to reduce the rate of depletion. It is thus a slowly diminishing resource, but even as it is being consumed, immense reserves of oil are left behind as the so called "un-recoverable" portion of petroleum formations. Most oil fields can only obtain a 15 to 40% recovery of the original reservoir, and it is widely quoted that there are still about 300 billion barrels of this un-recoverable oil still in place (Mauch, 1980, etc.). With the present comparatively high oil prices, and the possibility of even higher future prices and short supply, this oil becomes an interesting potential reserve. Mining the petroleum formation would be one means of recovering at least a portion of this oil. The concept of oil mining is neither new nor limited to conventional oil fields, since the procedure could be equally employed with the otherwise difficult to produce heavy oil deposits, and the solid or semi-solid tar sands and diatomaceous hydrocarbon formations. Estimates place the U.S. tar sand resource at about 30 billion barrels, and heavy oil at 5-10 billion barrels (Unitar, 1982). Figure 1 graphically summarizes the heavy oil reserves based upon formation depth and characteristics, while Figure 2 shows their location. This paper presents the results of a review of historic blast design practices at the Dragon Products Company, LLC (Dragon) Quarry Operation, along with the results of two different blast design vibration monitoring programs. A blast pattern design modification was initiated to determine if production volume per shot could be increased and highwall instability could be decreased. A vibration monitoring program was undertaken to investigate peak particle velocity (PPV) and relate the data to the blastability of the jointed onsite rock mass, utilizing the relationship between PPV and dynamic stress and strain. The Dragon Quarry Operation has historically used a 6-in. diameter, 14-ft by 14-ft production blast pattern, with blast holes loaded manually using cartridge style explosive products. In 2011, Quarry Operations introduced a 6-in diameter, 16-ft by 16-ft production blasting pattern, using pre-mixed, truck-loaded, bulk emulsion/ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) blends. This paper summarizes the results of the blast design modifications, the results of the vibration monitoring data, and describes how production blasting and excavation at the Dragon Quarry has benefited from such modifications.

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is produced when sulfides are exposed to oxygen and water. Oxidation reactions typically result in a depression of pH and leaching of solutes and metals. Many oxidation models have been developed based on oxygen diffusion, but in environments with high permeability, other transport processes (i.e., convection and advection) can play an important role. Multiple sulfide mineral phases with differing oxidation rates should also be incorporated. WROC, a finite-difference model, was developed to account for these factors in predicting ARD. The program includes sulfide mineral oxidation using a shrinking core mechanism, heat transfer by conduction, heat of reaction, and oxygen transport by diffusion and advection. The model was validated using data from the literature. After validation, the WROC model was used to simulate several different waste rock scenarios including different forms of sulfide mineralization and the effect of implementing a waste rock cover. The results demonstrate that including specific sulfide mineral phases can have a significant effect on oxidation and that implementation of a cover can also aid in reducing waste rock oxidation.
