As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

Introduction Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. Appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt a x-ray CT analyzer for determination of coal washability has recently been developed and sucessfully tested for well characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed x-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink-float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined.

This contribution describes rock mechanics features of the Davis Cavern at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, U.S.A. The mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. In 2003 and again in 2008, the mine site was recommended for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in cooperation with the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory under the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). The original Davis Cavern was excavated about 9.1x16.8x9.7 m high (30x55x32 ft high) in 1965 (Mitchell 2009) at a depth of 1,478 m (4850 ft). The purpose of the cavern was to house apparatus for detecting solar neutrinos. The experiment ultimately proved successful and earned R. Davis a share of the 2002 Nobel Prize in physics. Recently, a new experiment (LUX=Large Underground Xenon detector for dark matter particles and WIMP's=weakly interacting massive particles) was proposed for the Davis Cavern that required an increase in height of 2.4 m (8 ft). For many years, the Homestake gold mine was the deepest operating mine in North America. Development extended to the 8000 Level (2,438 m). The mine closed in 2003. Pumps were shut off and the water level rose to the 4350 Level, about 150 m (500 ft) above the Davis Cavern. Some six years later after selection for DUSEL proposal development by the National Science Foundation (NSF), access to the 4850 Level and the Davis Cavern was regained. Pumping has lowered the water level to well below the cavern floor. Figure 1 shows the layout and location of the Davis Cavern (Cavity). Detector tank, supporting steel, and so forth were subsequently removed. The cavern was re-supported and new access was developed. By August, 2010, 13,000 ft3 had been removed during enlargement and renovation of the Davis Cavern. Figure 2 shows the detector tank under construction in 1965.

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. A novel approach incorporating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and flotation modelling has been used for investigating flotation cell designs. CFD modelling has increasingly been employed to enhance understanding of the cell hydrodynamics in mineral and coal flotation. Opportunities for improving the flotation cell performance can be identify by modelling. The CFD-flotation model from CSIRO incorporates cell hydrodynamics that affect particle-bubble interactions. Information from the model includes velocities, turbulent dissipation rates, gas hold-up, particle-bubble attachment and detachment rates. The attachment and detachment rates have been found to be effective measures of cell performance for cell design.

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. INTRODUCTION The City of Phoenix, Arizona is located in the Phoenix Basin watershed which is prone to flash flooding several times each year. The runoff from these storms moves from the mountains in the north to the Salt River in the south. An extension of Interstate Highway 10 (1-10) will pass through the city east to west to form an Inner Loop through the downtown business district. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The I-10 Inner Loop extension will be a depressed roadway which would intercept the surface drainage of the Phoenix Basin and separate the watershed into two regions. To prevent flooding of the depressed roadway, runoff storm water collected from the northern half of the drainage area will be conveyed beneath the roadway to its natural outlet at the Salt River. A conveyance system composed of pressure tunnels beneath the city, shown in Figure 1, was proposed to achieve this goal . Table A presents the prominent features of each of the tunnels. This paper will describe geologic and engineering parameters specific to Phoenix which were used in the design of a series of tunnels to convey storm water from the I-10 Inner Loop to the Salt River. The design of tunnel initial and final support is described along with support and construction methods used by the Contractor.

Cathodoluminescence microscopy (CLM) is uniquely applicable to the study of carbonatite-related fluorspar ore deposits. The mineralogy of the carbonatites, sodic and potassic fenites, marbles, quartzites, and fluorite ores are readily determined and characterized. Calcite, dolomite, apatite, fluorite were deposited dominantly under high temperature conditions and they exhibit strong cathodoluminescence (CL). Three types of carbonatites have been recognized at the Okorusu, Namibia carbonatite complex and fluorspar mines by field mapping and laboratory CLM. The main carbonatite intrusion is fine grained and consists mainly of calcite. A later phase of pegmatitic carbonatite consists of calcite, magnetite, Fe-rich pyroxene, apatite, and pyrochlore. Pyroxene carbonatites were recognized mainly through their study by CLM.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulfide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular SO2 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and violarite have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: 1) pyrrhotite solid solution (Fe0.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals, and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinel crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag.

Strong demand for copper in developing nations such as China and India, plus the additional demand for industrial minerals to supply the Arizona construction market, brought about a record-setting year for the state?s mining industry. The value of Arizona?s copper production set a new high of $5.5 billion and pushed the total value of mineral production to $7.58 billion. This was also a record. As it has for many years, Arizona ranked first in nonfuel mineral production in the U.S. In addition to leading the nation in copper, Arizona ranked in the top five in molybdenum, sand and gravel, gemstones, perlite, silver, zeolites and pumice. Generally strong and rising prices, especially toward year?s end, fostered a bullish atmosphere that encouraged significant levels of acquisition and exploration. This activity has spread beyond the normal commodities to include some, such as manganese and fluorspar, that have not been mined in Arizona for decades.

Flawed mining studies have been major contributors to poor investment decisions in mining for many years, contributing to the long period of poor industry profitability. Most of the major mining houses have now adopted quite formal processes and quality standards for mining studies to reduce the potential for poor investment decisions in the future. Other organisations such as the World Bank also have specific requirements for particular types of studies, such as bankable studies. This increasing requirement for rigour and discipline means a highly structured and phased sequence of studies is now required along with the development and adoption of industry-wide standards in mine ventilation studies. New terms in the study process such as ?independent peer review? and ?hold and review? are assisting in this process. More traditional terms such as ?feasibility study? and ?pre-feasibility study? now have much more precise technical definitions. Specific standards for the ventilation components of the various phases of a mining study are proposed in this paper.

China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. Selecting a minicomputer is not unlike selecting a costly piece of mining equipment such as a truck, shovel, crusher, or conveyor belt system. A marked difference might lie in the frequency at which such selection takes place; another difference might be mine management&apos;s familiarity with mining equipment vis a vis a minicomputer. These basic differences might prompt a mining company to seek the aid of a consultant when selecting a minicomputer system. Advantages and Disadvantages The fundamental advantage of employing an independent consultant is that it provides management with a source of knowledge and breadth of experience not readily available within the organization. If the consultant has a minerals background, such knowledge and experience are further enhanced by actual experience in exploration, mining, and mineral processing. If the consultant has worked within a mining company, such hands-on experience is supplemented with a meaningful understanding of the client&apos;s business; this facilitates communication between the consultant and members of the client organization. The consultant has been, so to speak, "in the client&apos;s shoes." There are several other advantages. Since computer systems cut across organizational boundaries, the independent consultant may be able to move within the organization more easily than an inside staff person to collect necessary information. Also, detachment from any manufacturer should provide the client with an objectivity and a set of recommendations as near optimal as feasible. The principal disadvantages lie in the area of continuity and accountability. Once the consultant&apos;s report has been submitted and his recommendations implemented, a discontinuity might occur. Also, if implementation does not provide the desired results, the consultant might not be available to correct the situation or account for actions taken. Proper selection of consultant services, relative to kind and duration, and the consultant&apos;s method of operation, will often prevent many of these aftereffects. Services Offered The professional consultant can help a client: •Define and summarize information systems technology* needs; • Evaluate alternatives such as in-house capability and capacity, time-sharing, or service bureaus; • Prepare a formal request for proposal (RFP) to be submitted to vendors; •Evaluate vendor proposals; •Evaluate the economics of lease vs. purchase; and •Assist in the conversion and installation. The tracer gas method of conducting ventilation surveys is a means of determining air quantity in underground mines with knowledge of the concentration of the tracer in the atmosphere and the flow rate at which the tracer is being released. The technique is useful in inaccessible areas of underground mines and areas where traditional point measurement of velocity is not practical. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the industry standard tracer(Kennedy 1987) used in underground mines because it is safe, stable, and not naturally occurring in the mine environment. The implementation of a second tracer will increase the versatility of the tracer gas technique allowing for simultaneous releases for the study of interrelated ventilation circuits, and for conducting multiple experiments in less time. This paper will detail the selection of perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) as a novel tracer with sensitivity, physical properties, and analysis characteristics similar to SF6. Methods for the release of liquid PMCH into underground mines will be recommended, and the vulnerabilities of sample loss due to condensation of vapor PMCH will be explored. Finally, the benefits and implications of using PMCH as a second tracer will be discussed.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.
