The effective employment of a pretensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut preload. In this paper, a load indicator washer (LIW) able to withstand an assigned static loading as well as provide an appropriate pretension is presented. The different LIW breadths are numerically analyzed with ABAQUS finite-element code to estimate deformation when a designated 60 kN preload is applied. The numerical simulation employs the bilinear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nut-LIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, long-term relaxation effect on bolt pretension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW predetermined deformation is the bolt pretension. It is drawn from the simulation results that LIWs with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 mm are completely flattened when subjected to 28, 42.5, 65, 76 and 88 kN preloads, respectively.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for the coal industry — particularly in Asia — the power plants being planned or under construction are designed to use coal as fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal that, in turn, has encouraged many in the industry to develop new coal mines. Indonesia is a country that has enjoyed substantial growth in coal production. This developing country has 195 million people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands. It has quickly emerged as the third-largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface-mining methods.

In the present study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the effect of chloride ions on chalcopyrite bioleaching and chemical leaching at 25 °C. The leaching results show that the addition of chloride ions suppressed the dissolution of chalcopyrite in both chemical and bacterial leaching. In chemical leaching, the solution redox potential in the experiment without Cl− stayed in a range more suitable for chalcopyrite dissolution compared with experiments with Cl− . In bioleaching, the bacteria activity was suppressed by Cl− leading to low dissolution rates of Cu. Surface morphology and chemical speciation studies confirmed the formation of potassium jarosite on the surface of the chalcopyrite leach residues. In addition, S K-edge XANES indicated the formation of trace amount of elemental sulfur and covellite on the mineral surfaces.

Less than 100 years ago the first major federal regulatory agency, the Interstate Commerce Commission was established (in 1887), and since that time literally hundreds of other federal agencies have been created. The regulations set by these agencies tremendously affect the individual citizens of this country as well as U.S. institutions. A few examples of the myriad agencies established include the Food and Drug Administration. (1907), the Bureau of Mines (1910), the Federal Reserve System (1913), the Federal Trade Commission (1914), the Tennessee Valley Authority (1933), the Securities and Exchange Commission (1934), the National Labor Relations Board (1935), the Small Business Administration (1953), the Federal Maritime Commission (1961), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (1965), the Farm Credit Administration (1971), etc., etc. Eight years ago, on December 2, 1970, still another federal agency was established by the reorganization plan of President Nixon -- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Administrator of EPA was given authority to regulate certain activities affecting the environ-ment, which were formerly within the jurisdiction of the Department of Interior, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the Federal Radiation Council, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Department of Agriculture, etc. Within weeks after the formation of this Agency, Congress began to enact legislation which would be administered by EPA. Over the last eight years a considerable number of such laws have been passed, a few of which include: the Clean Air Act (1970), the Noise Control Act (1972), the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (1972), the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (1972), the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (1973), the Safe Drinking Water Act (1974), the Toxic Substances Control Act (1976), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (1976), the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, etc. It may be helpful to review, in a summary fashion, the major provisions in some of these statutes, and accompanying regulations, as they relate to water quality control in the mining industry. The Safe Drinking Water Act and the Federal Water Pollution Control Act contain provisions to be examined, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Toxic Substances Control Act. One other law, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (1977), is not administered by EPA although it does contain many provisions related to environmental control, and it will also be dis-cussed because of its importance to the mining community.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) panel cave mine is one of three active caving mines at PT Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg Underground Mining Complex. The DMLZ mine is located at a depth of approximately 1,500-1800 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel cave mining operations. This depth results in both high in-situ and induced stress that acts on the hard and massive rock mass, triggering rockburst conditions. As a result of the bursting conditions, ground support and maintaining the support capacity are an essential part of operating the DMLZ mine in an efficient and safe manner.

Buckhorn ore is hydrous, argillized basaltic andesite, and is at least 60% clay composed of kaolinite and subordinate montmorillonite. Moisture content runs from 10% to 25%. The original crushing plant was a typical compression type, employing a jaw crusher, and two cone crushers. The system was plagued with constant plugging and unable to meet production plans. The three compression crushers were replaced with a Stamler Feeder Breaker followed by a Hazemag Impactor. Production plans are now exceeded. Agglomeration has progressed from an agglomeration drum to cascading conveyors, to introduction of the lime and cement into the primary crusher.

The term "secondary recovery" has recently brought on a new meaning in view of the depletion of natural resources, energy conservation, plant optimization, and the environmental consciousness that has led to hazardous waste management, recycling, and secondary processing. Many secondary recovery processes are being developed applying mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation have all emerged as implicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. Although the concept of the eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago, (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889) it was not until this last decade that it gained prominent acceptance. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high intensity magnetic fields. High energy permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymiun-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits.

The sulphur shortage that has occurred in the past two years has directed attention more and more toward sour natural gas reserves, Wellhead values of sour gas vary widely depending upon the acid gas composition, location, market conditions, and necessary processing charges. Preparation of a saleable residue gas is considerably more involved and expensive than that normally encountered in treating a sweet gas. Recent revisions in sales gas specifications have increased capital costs and processing charges. The presence of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in a natural gas contributes to shrinkage factors that may approach 50%. Fuel required by the gas sweetening process and sulphur slant tail gas incineration also contributes to a further reduction in the volume of residue gas available for sale. The additional processing facilities involving gas sweetening, mercaptan removal, expanded utilities, sulphur recovery and sulphur handling, all demand additional operating and maintenance staff. A favorable sulphur market under certain conditions may justify the processing of sour gas whereby sulphur is either a by-product or a co-product, Five typical cases involving different compositions of sour gas are presented for evaluation. There are three parties to the oil imports controversy: the domestic oil producers, whose side has just been ably summarized by Mr. Jameson; the oil importers; and the public. Domestic producers and importers are both motivated by economic self-interests, that is by their natural and legitimate desire for profit maximization, in their respective positions. Thus, domestic producers, rightly, regard every barrel of imported crude oil (with the exception of some specialty crudes) as a displacement of a barrel of their own crude. Hence, the lower the import Level the better they like it. Conversely, U .S. refiners whose plants are located at the seaboard or at certain inland waterways generally welcome a higher level of imports because refiner profits are based primarily on the spread between the crude oil price and the refined products price, since crude oil represents by far the refiner?s largest cost factor. The relatively low cost of foreign oil means therefore higher profits to those refiners able to process such oil, This applies particularly to integrated companies whose own domestic oil production is insufficient, to meet their refinery requirements but who have developed ample low-cost foreign oil supplies.

Although cyanidation has been universally applied in the processing of gold and silver ores, the search for less toxic alternatives continues. Difficulties encountered in processing ores containing oxidized copper minerals and the inherently slow kinetics of cyanidation have generated a renewed interest in thiosulfate leaching. This process, as well as the catalytic effects of copper ion, were well recognized and widely applied towards the end of the past century. In this study, the effects of copper, ammonia, and thiosulfate concentrations on gold dissolution were investigated using the rotating disk technique. Extraction of gold and silver from an oxidized copper-bearing ore was also studied utilizing a statistical experimental design, and these results were displayed in the form of contour plots.

Since the dam of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extractions. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll in the US coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicates that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied in order to reduce dust levels. An overview ofCWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

Swelling clay soils have been problematic to many types of infrastructure in the United States. However, their impact on underground construction is often misunderstood. The use of swell pressures in design of initial tunnel and shaft support lacks proper guidance and is often mis-interpreted. This paper provides insight and guidance on how to implement a geotechnical investigation program to determine if swelling soil exists at a site and how it impacts the design of temporary support systems for underground projects. An example is provided for how swell pressures were incorporated into the design of an initial support system for a rib and lagging tunnel system and problems that occurred.

Short-term mine planning to open pit requires defining diglines to orientate the excavation geometry. In deposits with multiple chemical variables, it is necessary to have more rigorous control over the feeding of the processing plant. This study analyzes the impact of incorporating multiple chemical variables, the risks generated by geological uncertainty, and the number and starting point locations of shovels in the sequential design of diglines. The objective is to maintain and preserve the low-grade variability, required tonnage, and continuity in sequentially selecting blocks. To achieve this, the probability distribution function of each chemical variable is used while attempting to maintain the ore grades as constant as possible. As it is difficult to maintain multiple elements with low variability simultaneously, the relevance of each chemical variable in the economic benefit is identified. Weights are assigned to signal the importance of each element based on its significance in the recovery process. Several diglines, consisting of sequential blocks, were generated on the same seed point to meet the weekly ore demand. Optimizing the stationarity of multiple chemical variables, accessing and reducing the geological uncertainty performed through geostatistical simulation of grades and transfers functions, considering the number and location of shovels, while meeting the operational restrictions of the selected blocks. The optimized digline with the multiple grades as stationary as possible is retained. The process is illustrated in a phosphate mine. The results show that the proposed method is viable and allows for a quick solution.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Most of the reported coal spontaneous combustion events occur in surface and underground mines where low rank coals (i.e., subbituminous and lower for this particular studies) are extracted indicating their high propensities for spontaneous combustion. Low rank coals have high moisture content (15 to 45%) and are capable of absorbing more moisture in dried condition. However, it is hard to induce the initial stage of self-heating process for the low rank coal using the current laboratory R70 testing method — a method widely used in the coal industry. Like a sponge, dry low rank coals can absorb water vapor in the air while the heat contained in the moist air is transferred to coal and served as the required activation energy to initiate the coal self-heating process. In order to prove this theorem and quantify the effects, the R70 adiabatic oxidation testing method has been improved to introduce a controlled moist flow into the coal reaction vessel. Tests using the new method and its setup on low rank coals showed that the initial self-heating process of coal sample can be greatly accelerated by the added water vapor — impossible with the regular R70 method. Once the self-heating is sustained, the removal of air moisture can further accelerate the process.

WHY DO AN AUDIT? There is increased enforcement of environmental laws and regulations at State and Federal levels with attendant steep fines and even the possibility of jail sentences. We are all aware of environmental and public health and safety incidences (i.e., Love Canal, Bhopal) which have led to stringent laws and regulations (i.e., CERCLA, RCRA, SARA). In some cases, the courts have specified that a company institute an audit program as a condition of settlement of claims which related to lack of environmental control. The U.S.EPA issued an Environmental Auditing Policy Statement in the November 8, 1985 Federal Register (pp. 46504-46508) which encourages the use of environmental auditing by regulated entities. Elements of what EPA considers to be an effective environmental auditing program are outlined and briefly explained. These factors combine to indicate why there is a growing number of companies which have instituted an audit program. Briefly, the program can and should be used to monitor compliance with environmental regulations and corporate policy, to prevent violations, to improve policies and procedures, to raise the level of environmental awareness, to encourage communication among operations and all management levels about environmental problems, and to measure risks and control costs. AMAX Inc. has had an environmental audit program since the early 1970's. The AMAX Environmental Affairs Department, working with the Law Department, oversees and coordinates environmental audits and analyzes the findings which an audit reveals. Facilities are audited on a regular schedule; those having the greatest potential for environmental liabilities are audited at least annually; other facilities are audited less frequently. The question of who performs the AMAX audits was settled in favor of the audit team being independent of personnel from the facility being surveyed. Other methods of auditing could be the following: - Independent contractor (Appendix A) - Combination of independent contractor and in-house staff - Self-audit by site personnel The merits and demerits of who should conduct the audit can be analyzed to suit your particular needs. Next you need to decide on the procedure for the audit and the form for reporting and follow up. Environmental publications referenced in Appendix B can be helpful to you at this point. After deciding on the form of auditing, a schedule is prepared and followed to the closest extent possible. This schedule should be published and distributed to the sites so facilities know when they are being audited. This is not designed to be "a game of hide and seek." Various elements of the AMAX Audit Program are as follows: Team selection Pre-visit preparation Site visit Exit interview Report Using the audit Follow-up Team Selection The usual make-up of the team is the audit manager, the environmental specialist who normally provides assistance to the site or has knowledge about the operation, and a legal representative if his or her schedule allows. The legal representative will review the findings of the audit team if a personal visit is not timely or necessary. Size of the team can be expanded, but a minimum of the audit manager and the environmental specialist is best. Two sets of observations are better than one. The environmental specialist can also provide the rapport which is beneficial to creating the appropriate tone so that the site people will be as cooperative as possible. This is not to be an antagonistic exercise.
