Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The vast majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 0.125 or 0.188 inches. Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuluses of 0.125 and 0.095 inch resisted an average of 2.25tons per grouted inch, with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased, with a minimum loss of35% and a maximum loss of 60% associated with0.188 and 0.095 inch annuluses, respectively.

When originally accepting the assignment, the Client had described the property as vacant land. A prior appraisal was later discovered and revealed that the property included a mineral rights appraisal. Further research disclosed an old dispute with a court ruling based on testimony by AIMA-certified experts. The present appraisal was therefore based on data from findings of the court with a fresh look at discount rate, absorption period, and residual land value. Fortuitously, the property subsequently sold on the market, while meeting all criteria for Fair Market Value. This provided insight into a market-based discount rate. Also, the absorption period could be adjusted in accordance with the current market conditions. The residual land value was minimal (based on comparable sales and projecting trends in market) as the property was affected by a flood zone and the surrounding development was sparse. PROPERTY HISTORY: A GREAT INVESTMENT Briefly, the subject property is located in the floodplain region of the San Jacinto River, a short river in southeastern Texas that flows into Galveston Bay, filled with sand and gravel. This location is on the north side of Houston, north of Beltway 8 on the east side of I-59.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

Spiraling costs in every segment of the open-pit mining cycle is a fact of life that every operator must reckon with. The introduction of various shock absorbing devices for rotary drilling is one recent innovation that may significantly reduce overall drilling cost, increase drill availability, and lower maintenance requirements. In a recent all-inclusive test in taconite ores, shock absorbers on Bucyrus-Erie BE 60R and Gardner¬Denver GD 120 rotary drills were directly responsible for overall savings of up to $41.06 per hour. What is It? A shock absorber is simply a device installed between the rotary drive head and drill steel that cushions the two. It functions in the same manner as springs and shocks on an automobile. Some benefits associated with use of the tool are readily apparent on a daily basis; other benefits are realized over longer time intervals and through continued use. A properly designed shock absorber will: •protect the drill from severe vi¬brations, improve rock bit performance, allow application of the best weight-on-bit and rotating speed under all drilling conditions, •function effectively over a wide range of applied bit weights, • have a spring rate soft enough to perform its primary function of absorbing both rotary and vertical vibrational forces generated by rough drilling, •be reliable and subject to as little maintenance as possible, •be easy to install and remove, and • be of such an economic benefit so as to offset the added expense of its application. A shock absorbing tool developed by BJ-Hughes Inc. was used in a recent test. The "Smoothdrill" is just one of the products currently available. This unit absorbs both rotary and vertical shock loads and has no mechanical parts so lubrication is unnecessary. A rebuild of the unit consists of removing the worn rubber element and inserting a new element, an operation taking less than one hour. Minimizing Vibrations Severe vibrations on a blasthole drill operating in broken and discontinuous formations have visible effects. These vibrations often cause structural damage when allowed to' continue, resulting in fatigue cracks in the mast and related structural components in the drill. When rough running formations are encountered, drilling must be interrupted and possibly shut down. Usually, the drill operator resumes drilling using less down pressures and various rotational speeds until firmer drilling is encountered. An effective shock absorber can substantially reduce these vibrational forces so more down pressure can be applied in bad ground. It is generally accepted that longitudinal vibrations and cyclic forces are more effectively reduced if a tool is designed to incorporate a relatively "soft" shock absorber. The softness of any shock absorbing tool is best judged by its spring rate-the weight required to produce a given amount of deflection, commonly expressed in units of kg per mm or pounds per inch of deflection. GC. Waterman Mr. Grieves' paper on "Shaft Sinking Today--A Boring Business Tomorrow" in the Dec. 1981 issue of MINING ENGINEERING is an excellent description of recent improvements in speed and costs of shaft sinking. However, shaft boring techniques are not a recent development. In 1935-36, the Idaho Maryland Co. (gold), Grass Valley, CA, bored the vertical 1.5-m-diam Idaho No. 2 ventilation and supply shaft to a depth of 346 m. The equipment was designed and perfected by Branner Newsome and was, I believe, described in "Transactions." Pickands Mather later bored a 1.8-m-diam shaft to a depth of about 305 m using Newsome's design. The Idaho No. 2 shaft cut through hard gabbro, diabase dikes, soft serpentine, very incompetent ankeritized serpentine and a strong fault zone. The completed shaft did not require timber support; the fault zone was cemented. Equipment consisted of a rotating 1.5-m or 3-m core barrel with a slotted bottom which cut a 76-mm kerf. The cutting agent was chilled steel shot introduced into the slot as needed. The driving mechanism and core barrel were lowered into the shaft, the former secured to the wall and the inshaft "engineer" operated the motors which controlled core barrel rpm and advance. After an advance of 1.5-3 m the equipment was lifted out of the shaft, a half(?) stick of powder cut off the drilled core, and it was hoisted to the surface with a cable attached to an eye bolt at the tope of the core. A "shift" consisted of three men: hoistman, equipment operator (down the shaft), and a surface laborer. Advance was variable as equipment and techniques were perfected. Near the end of the job advance was, as I remember, 1.5-3 m per shift. Costs were, as I recall, about $115/m. Up to 4 m cores were lifted out in one piece and swung to the dump by a stiff leg derrick. The Newsome equipment was relatively inexpensive to build and operate and his method should be (more than?) competetive with the methods described by Grieves. W.E. Hawes The author, in mentioning the South African developments of the cactus grab, ignores the parallel development of the Cryderman mucker in this hemisphere. Perhaps a slightly longer history of blind hold drilling would have been in order. Blind shaft boring got a major boost at the Nevada Test Site, as part of the nuclear weapons development, when it was essential to be able to quickly assess depth for weapons testing. One of the early civilian attempts to utilize this technology occurred when Kerr McGee drilled the shaft at the Section 19 Mine at Ambrosia Lake, NM. This twin masted drill rig belonged to a subsidiary of Kerr McGee, not Shaft Drillers. This was a difficult hole, due to bentonitic shales that decomposed. Later advances in drilling fluids eliminated this problem. The Conoco project referred to is not entirely correct, and needs minor amplification: The depth of the development (not pilot) shaft drilled was 684 m, at a diameter of 3.05 m, with a 2.16 m ID hydratatic casing being installed to a depth of 669 m. Conoco Inc., not Challenger, executed the drilling, however Conoco did use Challenger Drilling Company's Rig 14-S. Rig 14-S is unique in that it is specifically designed for shaft drilling, rather than being an oil field rig used for this service. All work was planned and directed by Conoco personnel. Deviation of the aforementioned shaft from vertical was 31 cm. Two smaller shafts (pilot shafts) were drilled with the same rig. These smaller ones were drilled 1.8 m in diameter, to depth of 665 m and cased with .91-m-diam casing, to depth of 650 m to be used as pilot holes for 5.5 m diameter shafts. The total elapsed time for all drilling, casing, cementing, and rig moves was 50 weeks. The constraints mentioned of vertical accuracy, torque, wall collapse, rig set up time, lining time etc., pumping out, etc., may not be as serious as the author implies. First, vertical accuracy: The record achieved by Conoco indicates that with reasonable care, good accuracy can be obtained, primarily by having a fair amount of weight in tension, rather than on the drill bit. Second, the amount of torque that can be applied to the drill stem has been greatly increased by the introduction of larger diameter drill stems, such as the new Hughes rig uses. Third, risk of collapse of shaft walls is minimal with the proper mud program. Basically, the walls are supported by the weight of the mud and it is not removed until some type of casing is installed and grouted in. Here in the real challenge of blind drilling shafts to devise a more economical method of lining bored shafts than using steel casing. The remaining issues were minor at Conoco, provided adequate planning and scheduling takes place. An excellent paper, "Shaft Drilling--Crownpoint Project" by Hassell H. Hunter, presented at the Fifth Uranium Symposium in Albuquerque in Sept. 1981 contains details of this project. A combination of blind boring, with enlargement by either mechanical means (boring machine, or tunneling type shield) or slabbing down, with muck removal through a larger bored shaft would seem to be the future trend in shaft development. The economics, especially for wet conditions, favor this concept over conventional sinking, as has been demonstrated at Kerr McGee --Churchrock, UNC--Churchrock and Conoco at Crownpoint.

Gentlemen, I am pleased to address this gathering of engineers and operation managers representing a large and important segment of the metal and nonmetallic mining industry. Since you know from the printed program that the theme of my paper is the furthering of safety in open pit mines, perhaps you will have guessed that I will also comment upon the image created in the public mind by the industry's safety record and the potential consequences thereof in national health and safety legislation. Operators of surface mines have some cause to congratulate themselves on the basis of figures issued by the national safety council which show that lost-time accidents per-million-man-hours in surface mining (11.18), is lower than that of all other mining. Moreover, the accident frequency in surface mining is only slightly above the median accident rate for all American industry (8.87). That is a good record.

The objective of the US Geological Survey’s mineral deposit database project (USMIN) is to develop a comprehensive twentyfirst century geospatial database that is the authoritative source of the most important mines, mineral deposits, and mineral districts of the US. Since May 2017, the project has focused on critical minerals. Data for critical minerals that are produced as products are relatively robust, whereas data for critical minerals that may be recovered as byproducts are commonly of much poorer quality. Similarly, more is known about critical minerals that occur in conventional deposits than where those critical minerals occur in unconventional deposits. For example, rare earth elements occur principally in deposits hosted by alkaline igneous rocks, but there is potential for their production from phosphate rock mining, which is less documented. Lithium (Li) has been recovered from pegmatites and brines, but other Li-bearing deposit types have been delineated that may go into production. Cobalt may be produced as a byproduct or coproduct from a wide range ofmineral deposit types, whereas rheniumis a byproduct of copper ore. Significant opportunities for research exist that could help identify new sources of critical minerals, and may also help increase production and recovery from existing sources.

The sulfur in high-sulfur bauxite not only pollutes the environment but also harms alumina production. This study investigated the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite by adding Zn or ZnO during the Bayer process. The results showed that the different valence sulfur (S2−, S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) in sodium aluminate solution can be effectively removed by adding Zn during the digestion process. Adding ZnO removes the S2− in liquor, but the other sulfur compounds (S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) are not affected. The mechanism of sulfur removal has been elucidated, where the S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2− are first reduced to S2−, and after adding Zn, the S2− enters into red mud in the form of ZnS. The ZnO then reacts with S2− to generate the ZnS that enters into red mud. Thus, this is a new and effective method of sulfur removal by adding Zn during the digestion process. The results shed light on the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite during alumina production.

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

A knowledge of airway friction factor (K-factor) is necessary to designing mine ventilation systems for least cost and optimum effectiveness. The friction factor used must be accurate and reliable to estimate correctly roadway resistances and pressure sources for required flows. Though the resistance to flow offered by mine airways has been an object of study over the last half century, no accurate relation has yet been established from which the prediction of the resistance of a projected airway can be made. In Kentucky, only limited and incomplete data on local K-factors are available. Therefore, there is a need for field investigations to determine these values in-situ for existing mining conditions. The author describes a study concerning K-factor that was carried out in ten coal mines, located in eastern and western Kentucky. The results of these investigations are presented in both tabular and graphical form.

Today’s mining occurs in a dynamic world of conflicting objectives. Mining companies have to look further than a traditional cash flow analysis to determine the potential value of developing a mine. In particular, proposals for new mine developments undergo rigorous scrutiny by a variety of stakeholders including regulators, NGO’s, and the local communities. From a business risk perspective, how mining companies address stakeholder concerns can have a dramatic impact on the success of the project. In today’s mining environment mining companies must continue to ‘walk the talk’ to stay in business, particularly during downturns in the business cycle. Falconbridge’s Raglan Mine is an example of a project that was successfully developed in a region that is sensitive from many perspectives, including environmental, socio economic, and regulatory. Close working relationships with local stakeholders along with strong environmental management systems are necessary elements of continued success for the project.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Partition models are commonly used to assess the separation performance of circuits incorporating density-based processes. Unfortunately, this useful tool has traditionally been overlooked by the heavy minerals sands industry due to difficulties associated with the use of toxic dense liquids. In the present study, this problem has been avoided via the development of partition models based on experimental data from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which uses different mineral species as density tracers, provides a new tool for evaluating the multi-stage circuits that are required to successfully upgrade heavy mineral sands. The partition model approach easily identifies shortcomings of existing circuits and, when used with conjunction with linear circuit analysis, provides tremendous insight regarding the optimum arrangement of unit operations in terms of separation efficiency and plant throughput capacity. An industrial case involving the redesign of a heavy mineral sand spiral plant is presented to demonstrate the utility of these process engineering tools in plant optimization.

Natural aggregates, primarily stone, sand and gravel, are recovered from widespread, naturally occurring mineral deposits and processed for use primarily in the construction industry. They are mined, crushed, sorted by size, and sold either loose or in concrete products to build roads, houses, buildings, and other structures. Smaller quantities are used in agriculture, cement manufacture, and industries employing chemical and metallurgical processes. The growth of cities, their buildings and the highways that connect them have created demand for enormous quantities of aggregates. The aggregates industry is the largest mining industry in the United States in terms of production by weight, volume and by number of active operations.

Classical acid-base accounting using modified Sobek titration methods has resulted in interpretation of results for materials with neutralization potential (NP) less than 20 tons of CaCO3/1000 tons of material (2% CaCO3) as "uncertain" due to lack of sensitivity within that content range. Standardization of a "fizzless" acid neutralization potential (ANP) method was undertaken in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International using two ranges of sulfuric acid additions based on reaction pH and carbonate carbon estimates rather than subjective fizz testing as well as hydrogen peroxide additions to correct for mineral acidity. The method is identified as the acid neutralization potential acidity (ANPA) titration method. During interlaboratory testing a positive bias was discovered within the "uncertain" range which was further investigated and resolved by increasing the test sample weight from one to five grams for samples needing improved accuracy in materials with ANP <2% CaCO3. Test results from the interlaboratory testing of the low range method is presented and compared with the results from the original ANPA method in the paper.

A continuous pilot-scale test of the GranuFlow Process was conducted using a screen- bowl centrifuge for the dewatering and reconstitution of column flotation concentrate at a coal preparation plant in Virginia. In this test, a slipstream of the fine-clean-coal slurry from the column flotation concentrate was treated with a bitumen emulsion before dewatering. The treated products from the screen-bowl centrifuge appeared to be dry and in a free-flowing granular form, while the untreated products were wet, sticky, and difficult to handle. Specifically, test results indicated that the average moisture contents of the dewatered coal were 35.7, 35.5, 32.6, 29.9, and 26.5 wt% with Orimulsion additions of 0,0.7,3.2,4.8, and 6.4 wt%, respectively. The handleability and dust reduction of the dewatered coal product were also vastly improved.

WELCOME to the world-class Cripple Creek district where gold exploration and production continue 95 years after the initial discovery. More than 21 million troy ounces of gold have been recovered, valued at greater than $7.8 billion using today&apos;s gold price ($371/oz). The Cripple Creek district is localized within and around the margins of a silica-undersaturated alkalic diatreme-intrusive complex. The diatreme appears to be comprised of three sub-basins: 1) a sub-basin east of the Cresson (Fig. 1); 2) a southwestern sub-basin between Victor and Cripple Creek; and 3) a northwestern sub¬basin within which the Globe Hill and Ironclad pits (Fig. 1) are located. The recognition of three separate basins was made by G. F. Loughlin and A. H. Koschmann (1935, Fig. 8) who prepared a contour map on the floor and walls of the composite Cripple Creek basin. The northwestern and southwestern sub-basins are apparent due to the discontinuous exposures of a partially exhumed ridge of Precambrian rocks (Fig. 1). The separation of the eastern and southwestern sub-basins was recognized in mine exposures where a fault-bounded ridge line extends from the vicinity of the Ajax mine toward the Precambrian "island" (Fig. 1).

El Abra has mining concessions granting the right to exploit minerals in more than 130 km2 (32,122 acres). SCM El Abra owns “rights to occupy” the surface of these claims. The company also owns the surface rights over the process plant area and over land conveyor route. The project has procured all material easements relating to the mine area, processing facilities and access rights of way. Engineering, procurement and construction Figure 1 sets out the development and construction schedule for the project. Development is already well under way. As of early January 1996, about 70% of the project was complete and more than 80% of the capital expenditures were committed.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

12.1-BASIC AND PARAMETRIC CRITERIA IN THE SELECTION, DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERGROUND MINING SYSTEMS STEFAN H. BOSHKOV AND FRED D. WRIGHT The criteria governing the selection of an underground mining system relate to several factors the importance of which varies with geographic location, the state of development of the industrial technology, the economic climate in the Nation and, perhaps, in the world-all these as functions of time. Thus, the best choice of a mining method depends upon sets of definable and undefinable values for numerous factors that may be considered fixed at the precise point in time. Subsequent changes in economic and/or technological developments may necessitate modification or complete revision of the existing mining system. A classification of criteria for selecting a mining system must be based on the broadest definitions. Specific cases may present simple solutions or pose very intricate questions, the answers to which are frequently based on judgment rather than explicit logically reasoned and derived results. Specific criteria may be of negligible consequence in some instances and of overriding importance in other cases. It would be foolhardy to attempt to point out, in the limited space available, all possible variations and interplay of factors, as well as to define the setting in which this interplay can take place. The reader is, therefore, referred to the case histories described in the subsequent parts of this section where actual practice will point out the variability of the problems encountered in the selection of a mining method. A popular thesis suggests that the proper approach to selecting the method of mining should be rooted in the inverse solution, whereby the limitations of the various methods in use serve as criteria to eliminate most of these methods from consideration in the specific case. This narrows the ultimate selection to one or perhaps two most appropriate methods. At this stage, a critical comparison analysis will lead to the ultimate choice. Although such a negative approach un¬questionably is valid in discarding obviously inapplicable mining systems from consideration, it falls short in defining the best system, which in practice quite often turns out to be a variation of a textbook standard, or a combination of two or more such standards. Because the deployment of capital and manpower over a long-term commitment closely follows the selection of the mining system, the decision-maker can well afford to spend a great deal of time and effort in evolving the optimum solution for the peculiarities of his specific case. Within the basic engineering tenets of economy and safety to which the design of a mining system must adhere lie numerous factors of constraint which may be grouped, somewhat arbitrarily but for ease of discussion, into several categories. The criteria that enter into the choice of a mining method derive from the following groups of factors: 1. The shape, size and spatial position of the ore deposit.
