Inter-Mountain Labs, IML, performed a study comparing mining waste rock sample analysis by Net Carbonate Value (NCV) and Modified Sobek acid-base accounting procedures. The study looked at 468 waste rock samples and compared the data for Neutralization Potential (NP), Acid Generation Potential (AGP), Net Neutralization Potential (NNP), and the ratio of NP/AGP. The study found that a majority of the samples were below 50 Tons CaCO3/kTons. This subset of ?low-level? samples was also examined separately for Acid Base Accounting parameters. The analysis compared the NCV procedures to the Modified Sobek procedures and concludes that the NCV procedures are as protective of the environment as Modified Sobek procedures.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

Improvements in miners? safety and health, as reflected by injury and illness statistics, have reached a plateau and even been reversed. Research into miners' OSH is a necessary adjunct to regulatory enforcement. Under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) mining experts have come together to draft a national agenda for this research. The Mining Sector Council, one of ten NORA Sector Councils, has produced a draft national research agenda to guide all mining research entities: academia, government, and industry. The agenda has seven major objectives, each of which has a sequence of sub-objectives: Reduce the likelihood of disasters in mines; Improve mine disaster response; Improve the health of miners; Improve atmospheric control (ventilation) in mines; Improve health and safety through behavioral research; Improve mine design, systems operations, and management performance to enhance mine health and safety; Apply ergonomics, human factor engineering, to increase health and safety. Long-term maintenance of the Mining Research Agenda requires input from the public, both here and abroad, monitoring of the impact of research results using OSH data, and partners who will translate the research to practice.

A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.

The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a simulator which integrates comminution, classification and separation modelling. In order to model this range of processes, such a simulator must handle a variety of information about the ore. The AMIRA P9 project has developed a whole-of-concentrator simulation capability which brings together a texture-based model of mineral liberation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography analysis to measure the inputs required by this model, and a multi-component simulator software framework. In the context of this approach, the term ?multi-component? implies the ability of the simulation to handle many particle properties simultaneously; for example size, composition, density, floatability etc. The simulation software framework provides the means to manage the flow of data around a circuit flowsheet, allowing each process model to access the information relevant to that particular model. A case study based on plant data from a gold-bearing pyrite concentrator is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the multi-component approach in simulating circuits which contain comminution and separation processes.

In 2005, Black & Veatch Corporation began designing a raw water conveyance system for San Luis Obispo County from Lake Nacimiento to the city of San Luis Obispo. The first element of the water transfer system will be a raw water pump station and lake tap. The wet well of the pump station will consist of a concrete lined shaft approximately 180 feet deep constructed in the very incompetent sandstone of the Vacqueros Formation. The lake will be wet tapped at approximately 172 feet below grade using a slurry earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The 48 to 72-inch finished diameter microtunnel will be approximately 500 feet in length. Construction is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2007.

Mining is one of the oldest industrial activities. Its products are essential to modern civilization. Paradoxically, and despite a deep-rooted belief to the contrary, mining is not a lucrative industry— at least not in the aggregate. This assertion is true not only for recent years, one of the weakest periods in terms of metal prices, but also for a long time past. In 1776,Adam Smith said in The Wealth of Nations: “Of all those expensive and uncertain projects, how-ever, which bring bankruptcy upon the greater part of the people who engage in them, there is none perhaps more perfectly ruinous than the search after ... mines. It is perhaps the most disadvantageous lottery in the world... Projects of mining, instead of replacing the capital employed in them, ... commonly absorb both capital and profits.”

The beginning of 21st century has heralded the global strategic importance, as evidenced by increase in energy prices and energy generation-emission-utilization dilemmas. In January 2008, the South African energy supplier, ESKOM had tabled the concept of power conservation and acknowledged the energy crisis until 2016. The concept is required of all energy users to reduce their electricity consumption, intensify energy efficiency and cautiously proceed with new projects. The generation of energy results in by-products called ?green house gases? (GHGs). To make a positive response to climate change and their effect on the environment, every energy user must ensure efficient energy use through technical and administrative means referred to generally as energy savings. This paper identifies mine ventilation engineering, in particular the electricity consumed by main fan units, as an area of potential energy savings. For a major mining company, electricity consumed by main ventilation fans alone can be in the order of 120 MW. Although a known fan engineering technique but scantly applied technology identified as the Hermit Crab can be seen as a ?quick win? project, due to its success in other industries such as cement and steel. The ?Hermit Crab? technique® involves upgrading or replacement of an impeller - whatever its origin - with a design impeller to suit the actual ventilation requirements, resulting in increased fan efficiencies. The cash flow benefits associated with a case study and its rollout of this technology have been calculated. For a 10% increase in main fan efficiency, would have a net present benefit of US$ 16.08m over 10 years. With the inclusion of carbon credits, this benefit rises to US$ 29.40m in total. Application of other available technologies, viz., composite materials, ventilation-on-demand and variable speed drives are discussed.

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

The Nancy Creek Tunnel is a deep tunnel, designed to store and convey wastewater by diverting flows from trunk sewers currently at or near capacity in the northwest of the City of Atlanta. The tunnel, constructed in hard rock, has an overall length of 13,300 m (43,700 ft), and a finished diameter of 4.9 m (16 ft). The project is currently under construction by a joint venture of Obayashi/CJB for the City’s Department of Watershed Management. This paper describes the contractor’s techniques and equipment, as well as discussing challenges which were overcome. The project is scheduled to be complete in October 2005.

The geology of the Muskeg River Oil Sands Mine is described to demonstrate how geologic modeling aided in resource evaluation and material characterization during the feasibility and construction stages. Bitumen is hosted in the clastic sediments of the Cretaceous McMurray Formation which is informally divided into members representing the fluvial, estuarine and marine environments of this transgressive sequence. Lithofacies mapping of drill core provides further detail to classify materials as resource type, for extraction suitability and for construction suitability. Geologic interpretation provides tools for the engineers to produce effective mine plans and for the operators to execute them during mine development.

This paper describes the use of post- tensioned rock anchors to reduce the risk of future damage to a residential structure as a result of coal mine subsidence. The project described in this paper was performed by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) of the U. S. Department of the Interior. The OSMRE was created to administer Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The responsibilities of OSMRE include "reclamation and restoration of land and water resources, adversely affected by past coal mining including prevention, abatement, control of coal mine subsidence. ?(&apos;l) Consequently, OSMRE has been addressing mine subsidence problems since its initial subsidence stabilization project in 1979. Stabilization activities have primarily consisted of supporting the overburden material by injecting materials through drilled bore holes into the underground mine voids. Injection of various materials into mine voids, including fly ash mixtures, coal refuse, cement grout, and gravel has proven to be a successful method of reducing mine subsidence-related surface movements, and has been extensively utilized in mitigating mine subsidence problems. However, the cost of drilling for injection can be extremely high in areas where the depth to the coal seam is great.

This paper includes discussion of how operating staff can use wireless devices to see equipment and processing data from anywhere throughout the mines and concentrators, and how management can view results from multiple mines, all in real time. Additional opportunities enabled through the remote access by equipment vendors or mining consultants is also presented, as well as an overview of typical benefits and current installations.

This paper discusses the Queens Water Tunnel, No. 3, Stage 2, being driven by a new Robbins High Performance (HP) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).The paper is divided into four sections. In the INTRODUCTION section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drive is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes, in the TBM OPERATION section, with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

The Shiloh Church deposit is a very significant molybdenum occurrence in an ususual, perhaps unique, geologic environment. Work done to date indicate that several million tons of "ore" may be present, occurring as a matrix in limestone and dolomite breccias. Mineralized rocks cored to date are at or near the surface and the deeper resource potential has not been tested. The prospect is located in Polk County, north- western Georgia (Fig. 1). The "ore zone" was outlined by North American Exploration, Inc. (NAE) using geochemical prospecting techniques. Extensive geological work, including core drilling, has been conducted on the properties, together with geochemical and geophysical surveys. The geology, geochemistry and geophysics of the prospect are discussed. It is hoped that these data can be used to formulate exploration programs in similar terranes located elsewhere in the eastern U.S.A.

Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43 m Main Beam TBM and back-up system was completed on September 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province of China. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, utilizing a method called Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA). The Jinping-II hydroelectric project features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18 km long, two of which will be excavated by TBMs and two by drill and blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2 m TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. This paper addresses the following topics: ¦Project description including geology and terrain; ¦The decision process leading to onsite first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned; ¦Design features of the TBM and back-up system; and ¦Operational history from startup to the writing of the paper.

A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has been developed which involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent extraction plant and operating conditions are made.

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. In Switzerland two major railway systems as shown below in Figure 1 has recently been completed or is under construction: ¦Lötschberg, south of Bern which was commissioned in 2007 ¦Gotthard, south of Zurich which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016The aim is to increase the transport capacity of the railway system and to transfer more transport of goods to the railway by offering transport of trailers and lorries on the new railway systems. It will have a positive environmental impact but also improve the congested traffic situation of the highways in north-south directionThe Gotthard tunnel is totally 57 km (35 mile) long and the Lötschberg tunnel is 35 km (22 mile) long. Both tunnel systems consist of two parallel single track tunnels connected with cross tunnels at every 333 m (1 093 ft). Additionally there are cross-over tunnels and caverns for installations and operation. In the Lötschberg tunnel, the majority of the excavation has been by Drill & Blast and in Gotthard tunnel the major part is being excavated by TBM.

In-situ leaching (ISL) operations have been proposed to recover uranium from sandstone-uranium deposits in NM. ISL (also known as in-situ recovery, solution mining, solution-leach mining, leach mining) consists of injecting a leaching solution into the mineralized zone through injection wells. The leach solution migrates through the formation, dissolves uranium and is recovered through production wells. The uranium is then precipitated through a conventional uranium recovery system. Several criteria must be met in order for in-situ leaching to be successful, most important is that the ore body must be amenable to chemical leaching. A number of ISL operations have been conducted in NM in the past (Mobil, Crownpoint; UNC-Teton, Section 23; Grace Nuclear, Hook?s Ranch, Seboyeta, Church Rock; Anaconda, Windwhip). Kerr-McGee (later Quivera Mining Co., Rio Algum) successfully produced uranium from mine-water recovery (recirculated mine water) from the Ambrosia Lake mines (mid-1960s to 2002). Despite some difficulties, ISL is a viable alternative to recovering uranium and could be utilized in the Grants district with proper aquifer characterization and monitoring.
