Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. The mineral exploration environment has observable economic characteristics, the assessment of which provides guidelines for exploration planning in the mining company. The long-term survival of the mining company is directly dependent on successful exploration. Exploration planning contributes to successful exploration through the development of exploration strategies. The objective of exploration planning is to select exploration environments which will enable the mining company to realize best possible profit and corporate risk conditions. Thus, the formulation of exploration strategies is based on profit and corporate risk criteria. Strategic considerations include the selection of commodities as exploration targets, geographic concentration of exploration effort, the realization of acceptable survival conditions, and the structuring of an exploration programme to optimize the economic benefits of the exploration investment process.

Automated mineralogical analysis of platinum group minerals (PGM), using the mineral liberation analyser, provides information used to understand flotation efficiency, primarily from a PGM liberation and association standpoint. To date, however, there is no consistent understanding regarding PGM speciation and its impact on floatability. Previous studies of PGM from UG2 ores concluded that a larger dataset is needed from which the various parameters can be modelled. Parameters on telluride, arsenide, sulfurarsenide and alloy species need to be integrated to fully understand the impact of PGM speciation on flotation, and for this, ores other than PGE-sulfide-rich UG2 must be assessed. Flotation rougher rate tests were performed on feed samples from two Platreef ores to determine the flotation response of individual liberated PGM species. This was achieved through automated mineralogical analysis of feed, rougher concentrates and tails. Based on 1529 liberated PGM grains assessed over the circuit for two Platreef ores, preliminary results show that PGM speciation, species grain size and competition from gangue appear to influence floatability in an ‘optimised’ laboratory environment. The mine production scheduling problem (MPSP) has been studied since the 1960s, and remains an active area of computational research. In extending the concepts of the MPSP, the automated mine may now be regarded as a hierarchical intelligent agent in which the bottom layer consists of distributed robotic equipment, while strategic functionality occupies the higher layers. Here we present a disambiguation of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational optimization, and automation within the mining context. Specifically, the Q-learning algorithm has been adapted to generate the initial solutions for a high-performing strategic mine planning algorithm, originally developed by Lamghari, Dimitrakopoulos and Ferland, based on the variable neighbourhood descent (VND) metaheuristic. The hierarchical intelligent agent is presented as an integrative conceptual platform, defining the interaction between our new Q-learning adaptation and Lamghari’s VND, and potentially other hierarchically controlled components of an artificially intelligent mine, having various degrees of automation. Sample computations involving Q-learning and VND are presented.

Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

Most flotation plants use a static reagent scheme, i.e., a set combination of collectors, frothers, and modifiers. This scheme is usually developed and refined over time to deliver optimal (not necessarily the highest) performance when the major ore types are fed to the plant. However, when ore types or mineralogy coming to the plant change substantially (and this often happens as different areas of the pit(s) are mined and crushed at the same time), there are upsets in the process, typically leading to lower recoveries. Adapting to this variability is usually done only when performance drastically suffers, and the changes made may be too late and bring additional variability in performance. The premise for SmartFloat™ is that the reagent suite needs to be dynamic, adapting continuously to changes in the ore and operating conditions. Solvay has combined advanced analytics and data science techniques with its expertise in flotation reagent chemistry to systematically and automatically achieve the above, and in real time. Thus, SmartFloat™ is optimizing the reagent suite continuously, removing the additional variability created by belated human interactions resulting in a better and more stable process. In addition, this advanced approach allows for continuous improvement by identifying poor performing ore domains and improving the reagent suite using Solvay’s FM-100 approach to design appropriate solutions.

Successful prediction of the collection efficiency of cyclone separators is a necessary step in cyclone design and verification. Aside from standard empirical relations, CFD modelling is widely adopted to supplement the design of cyclone units in relation to the desired separation performance. Nevertheless, effective adoption of numerical modelling is sometimes prevented by large modelling errors, especially for small size particles which are more subject to turbulence effects than larger particle classes. In the past, this motivated the adoption of more refined turbulence modelling approaches, such as large-eddy simulations. These approaches provide greater insight into time dependent behaviour, while leading to larger computational cost with respect to more standard approaches. In this paper, an effective Eulerian-Lagrangian Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is investigated, which is able to predict the complete separation efficiency curve with satisfactory accuracy, without requiring prohibitively long computational times. An assessment of the proposed approach is carried out against experimental data from large laboratory scale cyclones, in the form of mean and fluctuating velocity profiles from LDA measurements (Hoekstra, 2000), as well as with respect to the experimental separation curve (Zhao, 2005). The final application to a full-scale industrial cyclone unit is then carried out with the aim of tuning the cyclone design to the separation efficiency curve as required by downstream processes. "Mining in the Carletonville area of the Witwatersrand Basin predates 1934. Owing to the depletion of higher grade ore, the current activities focus increasingly on the extraction of lower grade secondary reefs as well as remnant extraction. Of particular interest is multi-reef remnant extraction. Numerical modelling was conducted to investigate some rock engineering aspects of remnants being understoped on a secondary reef horizon. An analysis of the stress evolution in the middling between two reef horizons indicated that a zone of high major and low minor principal stress develops between the two reefs. This indicates a high risk of violent shear failure. Some pillars were nevertheless successfully understoped in the past and a study was conducted to better understand this phenomenon. An ’extended’ energy release rate concept introduced by Napier and Malan (2014) proved to be useful for investigating this problem. It was found that bedding planes and lithology appears to play a role in the stable dissipation of energy in multi-reef remnant geometries. The study indicated that the stope convergence and the various energy components are affected by the presence, position, and properties of a bedding plane. The energy solutions are complex and sometimes counterintuitive. Care should be exercised when modelling specific cases. The modelling was nevertheless valuable as it indicated that energy dissipated on weak layers may reduce the risk of violent failure in a multi-reef mining scenario. Additional work is required to investigate if crushing on the reef plane plays a prominent role when mining these remnants. IntroductionTo extend the lives of the Witwatersrand gold mines, work is being conducted to include a larger number of remnants and pillars in the reserve base of the mines. According to Jager and Ryder (1999), a remnant is an unmined block of ground surrounded by extensive mining. Remnants are typically left because of adverse or difficult mining conditions caused by geological structures, poor ground conditions, low grade, or rockburst damage (Durrheim, 1997). In contrast, pillars are typically the result of rock engineering designs to control energy release rates (ERR) and seismicity. During the early 1900s, remnants formed by the practice of scattered mining layouts had a significant effect on seismicity. Numerous task teams were appointed during this period. As the industry expanded, the severity of rockbursting increased and the research was formalized after the 1960s. Various recommendations were made and many of these are still used as best practice today (e.g. Jager and Ryder, 1999)."

Recovery of precious metals from hydrochloric solution using sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent was examined. Sulfur-impregnated adsorbent with adsorption abilities of precious metals can be prepared from activated carbon using pyrolysis at 600 oC under 10 % H2S gas flow, and the adsorbed Au and Pd were precipitated as metal phase on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbents after precious metals adsorption were burned at 700 oC to obtain the residue mainly containing precious metals. The adsorbent was found to be highly efficient and selective for the uptake of precious metals, especially Au, in the presence of excess base metal ions from simulated spent automotive catalyst eluted solution using a column pack test. The utilization of biomass as a solid fuel for co-firing has received great attention from boiler manufacturers as a clean coal technology (CCT) option. This research aimed to produce biocoal pellets, as a clean energy fuel, using hydrochar from trees planted to rehabilitate acid mine drainage (AMD) water and fine coal discards. The hydrochar was synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization of Searsia lancea harvested from AMD-contaminated land at a temperature of 280°C and a residence time of 90 minutes. It was blended with discard coal (–1 mm) at ratios of 25% and 50% hydrochar to produce different forms of solid pelletized biocoal (BC). The physicochemical and mechanical properties of each of the biocoal pellet blends were determined. The 100% hydrochar had the highest calorific value of 29.99 MJ/kg, while the raw discard coal had a calorific value of 16.73 MJ/kg. The ash content decreased from 42% in the discard coal to 25% in the blend of 50% coal and 50% hydrochar biocoal pellets. Biocoal pellets comprising 25% hydrochar and 75% discard coal (BC25 HC/75 COAL) displayed the best mechanical properties (compressive strength 3.06 MPa) of all the fuels, but the physicochemical properties were inferior to the BC50 HC/50 COAL pellets. This research has demonstrated that hydrochar synthesized from a tree species planted for hydraulic control of AMD has the capability to act as a binder for improving the mechanical properties and energy characteristics of fine discard coal.

As a rule, removing waste rock at the beginning of the process improves the conditions for the flotation of minerals, and also reduces the operating costs of crushing, grinding and flotation. Lead-zinc ores in the Shalkiya deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan are classified as difficult for enrichment, but taking into account their significant reserves, they are one of the main potential ores for the production of lead and zinc. Under industrial conditions, for processing ores of the Shalkiya deposit, a selective flotation concentration scheme with the production of lead and zinc concentrates is recommended. However, according to the recommended scheme, it is not possible to obtain high-quality concentrates of lead and zinc, with high metal recovery. The paper presents the results of studies of preliminary gravitational enrichment of lead-zinc ore in the Shalkiya deposit. Based on the fractional analysis for the particle size range of -40+8 mm, Henri- Reingard enrichment curves were constructed, separation density (2730 kg /m3) was established to isolate the light fraction with the lowest possible lead and zinc content, and gravity enrichment indices (0.7-0.71) were determined. It was found out that when using gravitational enrichment of the original large-sized ore in the Shalkiya deposit, tails are released at the beginning of the technological process with a yield of up to 20% with the extraction of silica up to 30%, calcite up to 11% and carbonaceous matter up to 12%. As a result of the studies, it was found that the beneficiation of crushed lump ore could be conducted in heavy suspensions. One of the positive aspects of the use of gravitational enrichment is the reduction of energy costs for grinding the heavy fraction, which was experimentally proved in this article. In order to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for metals and address the numerous technical, economic and environmental challenges within the current mining context, a holistic approach to process design, which is grounded in mineralogy, is needed. This would ensure that the impact of varying process mineralogy (and associated chemistry) on technical considerations and the associated economic implications and environmental consequences are taken into account upfront. This investigation focuses on the commodity zinc due to its strategic value coupled with limited resource availability and the wide variety of substantially different process technologies in existence. As the most commonly processed zinc ores contain zinc sulphides, the mineralogy/chemistry of these ores and their associated process routes will be discussed. The findings have been generated through the analysis of two case studies, Teck’s Trail Operations (British Columbia, Canada) and Hudbay Minerals’ Flin Flon Operations (Manitoba, Canada). The flotation of zinc sulphide ores to produce concentrates with varying mineralogy, represents the starting point for both case studies. The hydrometallurgical process routes for the further refining of zinc and other valuable metals include roast-leach-electrowinning (RLE), and zinc pressure leaching (ZPL). The effect of process route choices on primary metal recovery (Zn), coproduction of other base metals (Cu, Pb), potential for other valuable metal production (Ag, Au) including less well known, but increasingly important trace elements (In, Ge), and the production of other by-products (H2SO4, S0) are discussed. The economic and environmental implications of these aspects will also be considered. It is concluded that a quantitative modelling approach must be taken where waste management is integrated into process system design and simulation as a key unit operation. The inherent weakness of the Zincor and similar iron removal processes is the relatively high undissolved zinc loss associated with the iron residue. High soluble zinc losses also occur due to poor filterability of the iron residue even though it may be limited to intermittent events. This work focussed on defining the optimum operating window for the Zincor iron removal process where iron is mainly removed in the form of amorphous, intermediate iron phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite. In terms of the main operating conditions, optimum filterability was achieved under the following conditions: pH of 3.0, temperature as high as practically possible (70C), at least 25 kg/m3 seeding, and a retention time of at least 4 hours. When increasing the temperature from 60C to 70C, the required residence time decreased by almost 50%. Undissolved zinc loss was also reduced from 8% to between 2% and 3% by using a basic zinc sulphate/zinc oxide mixture as neutralising agent to effect iron removal.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and the rate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

The Gautrain rapid rail link project is currently Africa?s largest infrastructure project connecting South Africa?s major airport (OR Tambo), Johannesburg and Pretoria. Phase one is planned for completion in time for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and involves 80 km of track and 15 km of underground tunnels. The key shaft sinking blasting issues revolve around maximising advance and improving blasting cycles to meet the tight deadlines as well as environmental control which, in some cases takes place only 15m from the city infrastructure. To achieve success, DetNet South Africa supplied a range of electronic detonator systems to cater for the different blasting applications involved (tunnels, portals, shafts and viaduct foundations). One such product, QuickShot, was used for the first time in a major civil engineering project and has been used in most of the shaft sinking blasts to date. The QuickShot system combines pre-programmed electronic detonators with special on-bench components that enable the user to quickly and easily design the firing sequence solely by using the order of connections. This precludes the user from having to deal in absolute delay times. The connecting system enables benches to be hooked-up speedily by multiple users who have differing levels of experience. This paper provides details of how, after 33 months, the system has been embraced by the project by aiding in maximised advances, improved cycle times and meeting the required environmental constraints.

Rockburst events have been a serious problem for many years in many mines worldwide, and in particular at El Teniente mine in Chile. El Teniente is the largest copper mine in the world, located in the Andes Cordillera where high stress levels are present due to intensing mining activity in addition to complex geology. Consequently, the study and management of the rockburst threat are necessary. In this work, the case of the Diablo Regimiento (DR) mine within El Teniente is studied. The energy capacity of dynamic support systems is determined for different tunnel geometries based on two kinetic methodologies, using data from DR. Initially, rockburst potential is determined by means of a stress analysis around different tunnel geometries through the boundary elements method. In the first methodology a yielding zone (YZ) is estimated for each excavation geometry using the finite element method FEM. The second methodology involves the definition and determination of a critical strain energy (SE) around each excavation geometry using a FEM numerical analysis. In both cases, peak particle velocity PPV is estimated by a scaling law, which is subsequently adjusted due to tunnel amplification effects. According to the results, and knowing the working energy capacity applied in DR mine, it was found that the values of energy capacity for the rock dynamic supports were better estimated by the YZ-PPV approach than by the SE approach.

A new approach to the -study of human factors in stope productivity by A. C. LAWRENCE B. Econ., D. Com. (S.A.) (Member) The extent of the improvement in mean performance which could be achieved by reducing the variance between stoping gangs is examined, and it is shown that a worthwhile gain would result if variance were reduced by as little as 5 to 15 per cent. The problem of identifying human factors which contributed towards variance in gang performance was examined in one gold mine. A total of 342 'observations' on 49 stoping gangs were gathered, each observation consisting of a set of figures for 36 variables for one gang for one week. The variables included 'stope factors' such as face length, 'gang factors' such as the ethnic composition of the gang, and 'supervisory factors' such as the experience of the miner. These variables were related to 'tons trammed per week' as a measure of work performance. The findings showed that certain of the predictor variables accounted for 66 per cent of the variance in gang performance and about two thirds of this could be attributed to gang and supervisory factors, that is to the 'human factors'. The method suggests a basis for a new approach to the identification of human factors and is a promising step towards optimizing gang performance.

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.
