GOLD 100, the most comprehensive international conference on gold ever held anywhere in the world, took place in Johannesburg from 14th to 18th September, 1986. The Conference was followed by a series of one day visits and an extended technical tour. The Conference was organized jointly by the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek), the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, the School of Business Leadership of the University of South Africa, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

The prop is the most important part to ensure the proper functioning of hydraulic support. When the hydraulic support is impacted by the roof, the prop is prone to extrusion deformation, expansion, and even bursting. In order to study the stress on a doubly-telescopic hydraulic support prop under impact load, an impact simulation was carried out based on the drop weight method. First, the impact model of the hydraulic system of the prop was established in AMESim software and the dynamic response curves of the bottom and middle cylinder of the prop obtained. Then, according to the conservation of energy, the pressure formulaes in the hydraulic cylinder of the prop under impact load were derived and verified by the AMESim simulation results, and the maximum pressure on the inner surface of the hydraulic cylinder of the prop obtained. Lastly, the transient dynamic simulation of a hydraulic support prop was carried out in ANSYS Workbench software, and cloud diagrams of stress and deformation of the prop obtained using Workbench simulation. The AMESim simulation process describes the change in fluid pressure in the prop, and the pressure formulae can be used to estimate the internal pressure of the prop under impact load. The finite element analysis results show that the stress of the middle hydraulic cylinder is much greater than that on the bottom hydraulic cylinder under impact load, which can provide a reference for prop design.

The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. "A statistical analysis was done on the locations of 718 copper and 1 257 gold deposits in Abitibi. This area of about 20 000 square miles is one of the better-explored metal-producing areas of Canada.Patterns of clusters were studied by harmonic analysis. Several two-dimensional power spectra showed a number of distinct peaks. Sets of crest lines for patterns of interfering waves were constructed on the basis of these peaks. They pass through elongated clusters of deposits which are spaced more or less equally. For copper these periodic regularities in location may coincide with geological structures largely of Archean age (major fractures and sedimentary belts indicating synclinal structures). A directional relationship with swarms of diabase dykes of known ages and distinct attitudes indicates that the gold mineralization is, in part, younger than the copper mineralization."

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

Tungsten carbide is a fine grey powder. It can be formed into shapes by compacting with the addition of a binder. Spherical particles are generally preferred in additive manufacturing as they pack together more efficiently than non-spherical particles, promoting a uniform powder bed density, better flowability, and elimination of internal cavities and fractures, resulting in a better quality of final product. The particle shape of powders can be transformed into spherical through the process of spheroidization. However, due to its high melting point, tungsten carbide could be difficult to spheroidize. Tungsten carbide was spheroidized using an inductively coupled radio frequency plasma at various plate powers between 9 and 15 kW. The influence of additional H2 in the sheath gas on the chemical composition of the tungsten carbide product was also investigated by means of XRD, which indicated that WC is converted to W2C at higher H2 concentrations. Optical analysis of SEM micrographs indicated that the spheroidization ratio increased with increased plasma energy.

Krige: The stimulating contributions from Messrs Cooke, Curtis, Martus, Johnston, Van Wyk, Van Rensburg and Wroth are appreciated by the author and provide clear evidence of the importance not only of the principle of assistance to gold mines, but also of its scope and form. In general all the arguments, raised by Messrs Cooke, Martus and Johnston in favour of extending the scope of the new assistance scheme can be accepted as sound.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. Many valuable and highly pertinent contributions were made spontaneously and usually in reply to some controversial topic raised by the discussion group.

In a flotation process of copper ore three factors were measured: copper grade in concentrate (β), copper grade in tailings (J) and recovery of copper in concentrate (e). The experiment was conducted by means of the Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were particle size (d), time of separation (t), type of the collector (k) and dosage of the collector (s). The considered vector function was then [β(d, t, k, s), J(d, t, k, s), e(d, t, k, s)]. Optimisation achieved was based on determining the values of the adjustable factors (d, t, k, s). The goal was to obtain the highest possible values of functions β and e (maximum) and the lowest possible values of function J (minimum). To this purpose the taxonomic methods were applied. One of the main tasks in exploitation of mines is to select a method suitable for the deposits, specific features including geometric, geo-mechanical and geological features. The purpose of selecting a mining method at this stage is to choose one or more method(s) having the most coordination with the deposit?s conditions and external factors, including the allocated budget and local technology for detailed feasibility studies. Several methods have been developed in the past to evaluate suitable mining methods for an ore deposit, based on its physical characteristics. These approaches can be classified into three groups: (1) profile and checklist methods, (2) numerical ranking (scoring) methods, and (3) decision-making models. Most of these methods have shortcomings. Considering the fact that most of the specifications of mineral deposits, such as dip and depth, are linguistic variables, absoluteness of the explaining parameters by previous methods can be mentioned as the most important disadvantage of these methods. This paper discusses the Fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (Fuzzy TOPSIS) to determine the mining method. The fuzzy decision making (FDM) software tool is employed to develop a Fuzzy TOPSIS based model. Application of this model with various values (crisp, linguistic and fuzzy) of the deposit eliminated the existing disadvantages of other methods. Two empirical illustrations demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the evaluation procedure. These show that the proposed model performs better than its alternatives. "Both Polish and European hard coal mining nowadays faces the need of deepening shafts (significantly in some cases) or extending mining hoists, due to the exploitation of deeper coal deposits.In order to protect the crew working within a shaft, rope safety platforms (artificial shaft bottoms) are employed. Old solutions, based on rigid steel constructions with the external damping layers made of e.g. slag and up to several tens of metres long, are intended to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t mass falling a distance of 700 m. However, current requirements often assume a drop of 20 t to a depth of 1000 m or even more.More modern safety platform structures, made of one or more support rings with steel ropes stretched on them (rope platforms), are more compact (up to 3 m high) and lighter than traditional solutions. Multi-ring rope platforms with additional damping layers filling the empty spaces between the ropes are able to absorb sufficient energy to meet the current requirements.Single- and double-ring platforms have been employed in Poland to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t dropping to a depth of 900 m. They have been developed (and some have already been implemented) by SADEX Ltd. and are protected by various patents and patent applications.This paper presents a design for a triple-ring platform structure with six rope nets. FEM analysis was used to model the performance of the platform. According to the simulation, a 20 t mass falling from 1000 m (>100 m/s) will destroy all the nets, breaking most of the ropes and deforming the support steel boards placed on the nets, but will ultimately be stopped by the platform, as its kinetic energy falls to zero."

MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS COMMITTEE MEETING The minutes of the Committee Meeting held on the 19th January, 1972 were taken as read and thei r adoption was proposed by Mr J. M. Meyer and seconded by Mr E. T. Wilson. There were no matters arising from these minutes.

Since 2001, the Hybrid Stress Blast Model (HSBM) project members have developed a software suite to model the complete blasting process from non-ideal detonation to muck pile formation. To preserve the physics and improve solution time, the breakage engine uses a combination of analytical models and 2D axisym-metric finite differences to model near-field crushing, coupled to 3D discrete lattice fracturing and distinct element numerical methods to model throw and muck pile development. The model has been validated by comparison with laboratory and field tests in kimberlite. Multiple blasthole simulations are used to demonstrate how changes to blasting parameters can influence downstream efficiencies. Case studies of wall control blasting show that the presplit design must balance the two opposing effects of increased damage with increased charge and decreasing attenuation of the seismic waves with decreasing charge. Modelling of decoupled explosives needs further development. Reducing the charge towards the back of the trim blast results in a much more significant decrease in back damage than altering the timing. The model demonstrates how separation along the weaker planes in a jointed rock can coarsen the fragmentation, leading to inefficient beneficiation, and extends the damage to a distance of at least twice the burden behind from the blasthole, severely compromising the wall stability.

Geometallurgy represents an integrated approach to mine planning and operation whereby the naturally occurring ore variability and its effects on all key downstream activities in the mine life cycle are considered. Process mineralogy is one of the key components of this integrated approach. This paper focuses on understanding some of the mineralogical variability across the Swartberg Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide ore in South Africa and its consequent effects on flotation performance. This process mineralogy project is motivated by the planned changeover and expansion of the Black Mountain Mines concentrator to process solely Swartberg ore compared to the run-of-mine blend currently being treated at the plant. Eight samples spanning the main lithological units of the ore body are described using quantitative mineral-textural data and bulk sulfide batch flotation performance to establish five process mineralogical or geometallurgical units comprising: quartz-pyroxmangite-magnetite, quartz-amphibolemagnetite, quartz-magnetite, garnet-magnetite-quartzite and mica-quartzite ores. Important mineralogical characteristics affecting Cu, Pb and Zn recovery, grade and selectivity specific to the different ore samples are discussed. Ultimately, the use of ore-specific process mineralogical and geometallurgical knowledge allows for better mine planning and plant optimisation. Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. Mining machinery integrated database for open cast mine operations is under going testing in a State company, Coal Mines Tuzla. Ferritic stainless steel is utilized to fabricate automotive exhaust systems using a ferritic weld metal. Ductility of the weld metal is higher if its microstructure contains a significant proportion of equiaxed grains. The formation of equiaxed (rather than columnar) grains is favoured by a higher titanium weld metal content. In this study, the Ti content of ferritic stainless steel weld metal was changed by using Tifree (Type 436) and Ti-containing (441) ferritic stainless steel as base metals. The metal-cored welding consumable contained 0.4% Ti. Gas–tungsten arc welding and gas–metal arc welding processes were compared. The weld metal Ti content ranged from zero to 0.5% Ti, as determined from scanning electron microscopy supplemented by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Cross-sections of the weld beads were subjected to point counting (to estimate the fraction of equiaxed grains) and image analysis (to estimate the average grain size). Point counting proved to be more reliable. The fraction of equiaxed grains was sensitive to the Ti content, but not to the welding process. Below 0.4% Ti, the fraction of equiaxed grains gradually increased with an increase in the weld metal Ti content; above 0.4% Ti, the fraction of equiaxed grains rapidly increased with increasing Ti content. The transition in behaviour at 0.4% Ti corresponded to a Ti content at which Ti-rich precipitates became stable at the estimated liquidus temperature of the weld metal.

This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

Discussion R. E. Rarnes (Member): The original concepts and the pioneering work now brought to the practical test stage by the Mining Research Laboratory team deserve our highest praise. The authors of this comprehensive paper rightly stress the urgency of establishing the extent to which the apparent potential can profitably be realised in practice. It is to be hoped that adequate funds will be made available by individual mining companies, the Chamber of Mines and manufacturers to attract the necessary staff and maintain the high rate of achievement of the last two years. From the Seventy-Eighth Annual Report of the Chamber of Mines and its members we see that, in 1967, with a Working Revenue of R759.8 million from gold and R54.6 million pit mouth coal sales and with profits from gold and uranium and pyrite of R307.9 million, only R1.9 million was spent by the Chamber on all forms of Research. It is considered unlikely that the associated mining companies and manufacturers exceeded this investment expenditure. Assuming a total of R4 million spent by the industry on Research and Development, this is less than half of 1 per cent of sales of gold and coal. This percentage, so low in comparison to North America and Europe, is no worse than that of Exploration expenditure which, in 1967, with South Africa's total mineral production of R1,287 million, was estimated to have been R6 million (Pretorius 1968). In a primary industry with ever present depletion of ore deposits and with cost escalation, expenditure on Exploration and on Research and Development is not a risky luxury but a tactical obligation. The potential rate of return on research expenditure into rock breaking is high. Stores consumed by gold and coal mines, members of the Chamber of Mines, totalled R316.2 million in 1967. Except for purchased power costing R42.2 million the highest cost group was explosives, drills and drill steel totalling R33.8 million or 10.7 per cent of the total stores consumed. In the paper under discussion it is claimed that the low 'effective stoping width' should greatly reduce the likelihood of rock falls or rock bursts to the extent that permanent support can be dispensed with. Insofar as this narrow cut is only 12 in. in advance of the working area which, with a 10 in. channel, is unlikely to be much reduced in width from that achieved by current methods, this claim is not readily understandable. Were it to have been based upon the regional support gained from packed waste it would have been more acceptable. Pre-developed stope drives may give serious trouble at depth and for this reason it is questioned whether a stoping area can avoid periodic sub-development blasting-the spoil and fumes from which will interfere with the rock flow and continuous mining of the rock-cutter. If, in the mining method proposed by the authors, stope drives are cut as small as possible (6 ft by 6 ft) then 25 per cent of the total tons handled (excluding resued waste) and 5 per cent of the gold will be blasted conventionally in the stope. At this stage one cannot envisage tunnelling machines economically or practically capable of such work. The various methods described by the authors and subsequent contributors for breaking waste are most interesting. It was noted that the 'bull wedge' and 'explosives' in Fig. 1 of the paper were no further from the ideal point 'A' than was 'cutting'. The writer considers that the bold and imaginative steps taken by the Mining Research Laboratory Team, the mining companies and the manufacturers concerned will eventually lead to a successful rock cutting machine with universal application largely independent of rock type. This may take many years. In the meantime other methods of improving productivity of saleable metal by rock breaking teams should be investigated even if such methods have local applications only. In 1955 the writer conducted tests with a wire saw similar to those used in quarries in the Northern Transvaal and elsewhere. Jeppestown shale, the immediate footwall of much of the East Rand gold field, was cut at the rate of 6 in. per hour using sand, water and a special endless rope driven by a low h.p. motor. A hypothesis on its application was submitted to the Office of the Government Mining Engineer in 1955 and to other mining institutions in 1966 after the writer returned to South Africa. By inference, rope sawing was classed as less promising than other methods tested in the Orange Free State Goldfields (Parker 1969). With highly resilicified hanging and footwall quartzites this was not surprising and confirmed the writers findings when testing hanging wall quartzite from the East Rand in 1955. The relatively uniform conditions, the low strength, hardness, and silica content of the Merensky Reef platinum deposits (Gray and von Bardeleben 1969) and in particular, the existence of overlying Merensky pyroxenite (Cousins 1964) make this and the East Rand attractive areas for larger scale testing of wire saws. It is envisaged that in suitable rock types the 5/8 in. slot would be advanced down dip or down a minor dip. In undisturbed areas 'faces' of up to 200 ft in length could be cut several feet in advance of breaking which could then consist of light blasting to the second free face or some of the methods now being tested for breaking waste in rock-cutting operations. A wire saw is an inexpensive and simple machine which, in some areas, could make significant and early gains in rock breaking efficiency as well as in ground and stoping width control.

Carbon-concentration Meter The latest of these, the ultrasound-based carbon concentration meter, was developed by Mintek with original sponsorship by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, and is now being manufactured and marketed worldwide by Debex Electronics in Johannesburg. Testing of detonators* The Chief Mining Engineer has asked the South African Bureau of Standards to monitor locally manufactured, as well as imported, detonators. This could ensure greater safety in fiery mines.
