The aspect of sustainability of ferroalloy processes has long been a serious matter for consideration in many of the world?s industrialized countries. A number of countries can be named where ferroalloy plants that were once flourishing, have all but disappeared. One of the most important factors playing a role in this type of occurrence is the cost and availability of quality raw materials. Given that all natural resources will be depleted with time, users are compelled to develop new processes that are sustainable in the changing environment. The DC arc smelting furnace is one such process that has proved itself, and has gained increasing popularity over the past two decades. This process, amongst other benefits, directly addresses the use of more readily available and more affordable raw materials in ferroalloy production. Since early in the new millennium, GLPS has been involved in various studies for different clients of furnaces for the production of ferroalloys. Two of these recent studies have culminated in the design, construction and commissioning of DC arc furnaces for the production of ferrochrome. One of these furnaces is a 10 MW unit at Mogale Alloys, and the other a 60 MW unit at the Middelburg plant of Samancor Chrome. This paper discusses the approach taken in the design and construction of these two furnaces, which, although varying significantly in size and capacity, are very similar in many other aspects of their design. The catalytic converter industry is composed largely of global multinational manufacturers who supply to vehicle manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers ? OEMs) from facilities strategically located internationally, including plants in South Africa. The South African catalytic converter production facilities were established at the request of the OEMs and commenced manufacture in the early 1990s. This near 100 per cent export focused industry exists in South Africa because of the incentives offered by the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which ultimately provide the OEM with import duty rebates. The South African catalytic converter industry is a complex vertically-integrated supply chain with a local content in excess of 85 per cent, substantially more than any other exported automotive component. The industry remains one of the very few downstream manufacturing industries where South Africa has a significant global footprint. This is even more important when it is considered that this industry is the key end-user for two of South Africa?s most important mineral resources, namely platinum group metals (PGMs) and chromium, and is in an industry which will see massive global growth as the developing nations of the BRICs grow their auto industries. In over 15 years of existence in South Africa, the catalytic converter industry has achieved remarkable growth, averaging compound growth in the region of 14 per cent per annum. The industry is the highest contributor to automotive component export revenue. South Africa holds >8 per cent% of global PGM reserves. During 2011, South Africa supplied 59 per cent, 29 per cent, and 72 per cent of the global demand for platinum, palladium, and rhodium respectively, as well as over 50 per cent of the global chromium demand. Global autocatalyst production remains the largest consumer of PGMs, and South Africa alone beneficiated 15 per cent of locally mined PGMs in the production of catalytic converters ? all is converted from PGM sponge (powdered metal) into PGM solutions for coating onto catalysts. Beneficiation of PGMs also takes place via the production of jewellery and electronic goods; but compared to catalytic converters, this volume is negligible. The industry is also the largest consumer of locally produced stainless steel (>50 000 t/a), exceeding 38 per cent of local consumption. The industry is a substantial generator of highly skilled employment, with over 5 000 direct jobs (excluding OEMs and stainless steel manufacture) and an estimated more than 30 000 indirect jobs resulting from upstream and side-stream suppliers. The industry places a high focus on skills transfer and development, with all companies providing high-tech training and education both locally and overseas. The industry has invested in excess of R5 billion in plant, equipment, people development, and process development over the last 15 years to support transfer of production and new technologies to South Africa. This has resulted in significant skills development in the support industries as well as within the catalytic converter industry. The current projections for local PGM beneficiation via catalytic converters reflect a downward trend as a result of production being moved to other global locations due to uncertainty around changes to government incentive programmes. The industry is currently capacitated to support 23.7 million units per annum. During 2011 it utilized about 70 per cent of this capacity, but forecast projections suggest that this will be at 46 per cent of this level by 2016. At full capacity the industry would represent 19 per cent of global autocatalyst production compared with the current 13 per cent in 2011. The industry believes that there is potential to make South Africa the preferred location for catalytic converters worldwide, given suitable support from the mines and Government.

In accepting this fact we can be proud in this country of what has been achieved, not only in obtaining the best efficiency from labour but in ensuring that their working conditions are reasonable and that their health and well-being are adequately cared for. When one visits our gold mines, one cannot help being impressed with what is being done to ensure that we have a satisfied, happy and healthy labour force. The Human Sciences Laboratory with its scientific approach has assisted greatly in promoting a better understanding of the problems associated with labour under the conditions experienced on our mines. It has certainly been an eye-opener to those of us not familiar with this work and I believe it is very important that everyone and not only people in the gold mines should know about it. "The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. This paper addresses the challenge to define a concept of entropy (state of order) for a textured particle system. Both the particle texture, the intergrowth respectively, and the particle size influence the order of a particle system. The smaller the particles become, the more particles form the solid system and the more permutations of the structure of the particle bed are possible. The texture within a particle is fixed, as long as it is not subjected to changes due to comminution, flocculation or agglomeration. The paper will present a definition of entropy, which is able to reflect qualitatively and quantitatively the intergrowth and the size (distribution) of the particles. Theoretical examples will show how different breakage mechanisms can be identified using the entropy definition. "A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource in which apatite is the main valuable mineral. Flotation is the most commonly used method to separate apatite from middle-low grade phosphate rock. Selective flotation separation is based on the difference of physical and chemical properties of minerals occurring at the three interfaces of mineral/bubble/water. Surface and interface chemistry of mineral have been playing an important role in interpreting and governing its flotation phenomenon. In-situ, visualized and high-precision analytical techniques, such as Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulation, have been applied to explore and uncover microscopic nature of apatite flotation. Consequently, a great progress at molecular or atomic level on surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation has achieved in the past decades. In this paper, the research progress of surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation such as surface wettability, surface-charging characteristics, surface dissolution behavior, adsorption mechanisms of fatty acid collector and depressor on apatite surface were systematically reviewed. This review will be helpful for the development of more selective reagents and efficient technologies for apatite flotation. Biooxidation, and especially the BIOX® process, is a viable, economical and environmentally attractive process to liberate gold hosted in refractory sulfides by oxidatively leaching the sulfides as soluble sulfates. The moderate to high cyanide consumption during the subsequent cyanidiation of the washed biooxidation residue is probably caused by the retention on the solids of labile sulfur species formed during the multi-electron oxidation process of sulfide to sulfate. In this work the nature and mode of transport of the cyanicides in the products from the mesophile BIOX® process, as well as that of the combined mesophile and thermophile bioxidation process, were considered and strategies to reduce cyanide consumption evaluated. It was found that labile sulfur species were the major cyanide consumers in the mesophile biooxidation product, forming predominantly thiocyanate during cyanidation. The transfer of labile sulfur species was only marginally decreased by more intensive and thorough washing of the biooxidation products with warm and hot water, intense stirring and warm caustic leaching. A major reduction in cyanide consumption was however achieved by using a combined mesophile and thermophile biooxidation process. Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

The flotation plant tailings at Kamoa Copper Mine concentrator were found to contain a high proportion of extremely fine particles. The potential issues with settling these fine solids were resolved by the use of a poly-di-allyl-di-methyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) coagulant, Flobead DB 45 VHM, in conjunction with a standard anionic polyacrylamide flocculant. This paper outlines some of the issues encountered and how they were resolved at the Kamoa concentrator. The potential to use this process and technology at other sites is also considered

The Unki Platinum Mines concentrator, employing an MF2 circuit configuration which includes fully-autogenous primary milling of run-of-mine (ROM) ore, was commissioned in November 2010. The project was Anglo American Platinum?s first PGM concentrator in Zimbabwe and would form a significant contribution to the group?s platinum production. The project financials demonstrated that the project was operating-cost sensitive. After reviewing the metallurgical testwork, mineralogical examinations, and the history of similar operations, it became apparent that the Unki ore characteristics rendered it amenable to autogenous milling. The primary ball mill, structurally designed for 30 per cent steel load, could be operated at the required initial phase throughput with fully-autogenous primary milling, realizing savings in both power requirements and grinding media consumption. The original mill sizing had been done with fully-autogenous milling in mind, but allowing for flexibility and mitigation in case of varied mining fragmentation. Since attaining steady state, target grinds have been achieved. This paper looks at the Unki ore characterization programme, design considerations, and the operational and control philosophy for a successful comminution circuit, and discusses the design to produce a flexible, low opex, mitigated comminution and overall MF2 flowsheet that is easily expanded in line with the potential for optimum exploitation of the orebody.

The productivity indices of the Republic of South Africa compare poorly with those of its competitors in the rest of the world. The theory of productivity is relatively simple, and various models are available to demonstrate this. The problem is how to apply the theory in practice and to convert it into a practical management system that will guarantee results. The secret lies in a management approach that aims at a continuous improvement in achievement and that involves the entire work force down to the lowest level in the process. Good management systems ensuring the necessary attention to, among others, management by objectives, finance, personnel, maintenance, planning, and control are a prerequisite for continued improvement and staff involvement. The net result of such an approach is described by the term performance management, which encompasses the total integration of al a company's management systems.

The South African mining industry plays a significant role in the economy of the country. Nonetheless, the negative impacts on the environment continue to prevail. In regions where mining exists in proximity to communities, mining activities have led to the disruption of modality. Rural communities are mostly affected as they depend on land use for agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. The conversion of land for mining activities often leaves the communities vulnerable when mines close because of the limited life span of mines. An ongoing discourse focuses on how the mining industry can contribute to sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. Post-mining transformation offers an approach for the mining companies to contribute to sustainable livelihoods post-mine closure by strengthening rural-urban linkages, which ensures inclusive development of both rural and urban areas. The paper employs a case study approach to Richards Bay Minerals and the adjacent rural communities of Sokhulu and Mbonambi. It sets out to understand the post-mining transformation employed by RBM and explore the rural-urban linkages that manifest as a result. Findings show that sand dune rehabilitation employed by RBM is successful in restoring soil fertility and establishing the natural ecosystem. The casuarina planted to rehabilitate the dunes is used to spur an alternative charcoal industry post-closure. The main rural-urban linkages that manifest are flows of people due to job opportunities and flows of goods from the sale of charcoal produced. However, there is a lack of communication and lack of authority to ensure responsible management of the casuarina plantation and equitable sharing of benefits. The paper recommends that other post-mining transformation strategies such as eco-tourism should be explored and that the government, at both national and local level, the community and the mine should be involved to ensure overall success and sustainability of the strategy. "Reference materials have always been important for validating and controlling analytical methods', They have recently become even more important as quality requirements have become more stringent and customer demands for properly verified and controlled results increase. Clients, especially from the resource exploration industry demand critical validation of all results reported. Mintek has been producing geological and semi processed ore references since the early 1970's and recently due to increase in demand other manufactures have entered the South African Market.This paper describes Analytical challenges from the customer's perspective. The customer being the metallurgist, mine geologist, environmental scientist and geologists from resource companies. Reference Materials and their appropriate use and good understanding of them can aid greatly in building confidence in the results, choosing the right Laboratory for a project, deciding which set of results arc correct and providing evidence to the customer's clients that the results obtained are the very best possible.Throughout the world there are hundreds of reference materials produced by over 80 organisations and these are mainly ores, rocks, semi processed ores, metals, and many more. Mintek is one of the top 10 producers with over 75 products. Many of these producers including Mintek and their respective standards organisations belong to the ISO REMCO committee and their respective work groups. This committee's main task is to draw up guide lines for the use, manufacturing and certifying reference materials. In South Africa a mirror committee has recently had its inaugural meeting the function is to give clear mandate to the South African representative on the main ISO REMCO committee, the South African delegate bas an opportunity to influence the contents of the guides.Tile SARM program has since the year 2000 increased its sale three fold, the question is why? There is more accountability needed in our world. That means Analytical results have to be the very best possible and risks associated to them must be well quantified. Consider that the risk of wrong results of wrong decisions made from a result is trivial to laboratory, in comparison to the laboratories customers. "The mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a significant expansion in copper and cobalt production in recent years. The greater proportion of this expansion has arisen through processing of oxide ores. The design of metallurgical processes for these oxide ores is based on the conventional equipment and layout for processing of sulphide ores, and comprises milling followed by leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The physical characteristics of the oxide ores, however, provide the process design engineer with an opportunity to examine critically the principles on which equipment selection is based and to design processes better suited to these ores. In 2015, ERG Africa began a project to expand the leaching capacity of the Luita hydrometallurgical facility. A number of innovative changes to the conventional process design were included in the modified flow sheet, which were validated when the project reached design throughput in November 2017. Of these changes, the most novel presented an alternative approach to mitigate the impact of colloidal silica on the operation of the solvent extraction plant. Introduction ERG Africa operates the Luita hydrometallurgical facility located at Kakanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), treating malachite and heterogenite minerals to recover copper as electrowon cathode and cobalt as a hydroxide precipitate. The process was originally conceived as a heap leach operation followed by direct electrowinning of copper, with solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) of cobalt. In preparing the sized ore for the heap leach operations, the undersized ore fraction at a P80 of 625 µm was discharged to a fines storage facility for later processing. This fraction carried with it approximately 30% of the copper contained in the run-of-mine (ROM) ore feed, and an equivalent proportion of cobalt.In a subsequent development, the cobalt SX section was converted to a copper SX facility, the leached cobalt being recovered from a bleed stream from the copper heap leach circuit. The operating cost for the process as then installed placed this facility well in the fourth quartile of the industry cost curve. The initial Luita operation was established in 2010 at a time when metal prices were above long-term averages (copper above US$3.00 per pound; cobalt above US$20.00 per pound), and the drop in prices in 2015/2016 presented a major challenge. The London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price dropped below US$2.00 per pound, with cobalt dropping below US$10.00 per pound in Q1 2016. This set in motion a range of improvement initiatives for the Luita operation. Central to this was the installation of a tank leach circuit to process the discarded fines and a modified SX circuit to manage colloidal silica. The revised Luita circuit reached design capacity in November 2017 and has proven to be well suited to processing of the oxide ore feed. This process design challenges the boundaries of conventional thinking in the areas of leaching, solid/liquid separation, solution management, impurity management, and metal recovery, and is the subject of this paper."

Globally, the demand for mineral products is ever increasing. Extraction of these mineral resources results in the continuous production of a huge volume of waste material, including tailing dumps. The mass of tailings usually exceeds the actual resource and often contains hazardous contaminants. This study investigated the effects of tailings disposal on soil, water, and air quality in the Nampundwe area. Water, soil, and dust samples were collected from different locations in the surrounding communities. The constituents analysed in the samples included copper, cobalt, iron, sulfate, and silica. According to the results obtained, some seepages occurred from the tailings impoundment to the shallow aquifer in the area. However, the general water quality meets the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) statutory limits. Recorded concentrations of sulfate (1500 mg/l), copper (1.5 mg/l), cobalt (1.0 mg/l), iron (2.0 mg/l), and silica were between 0.003 mg/l and 705 mg/l, which is far below ZEMA’s statutory limit. Silica concentration was also evident in the air. The highest concentration recorded was 260 ppcc (particle per cubic centimeter) recorded in July 2019 from the northern direction of the tailings dam. The concentration was below the statutory limit of 350 ppcc. The topsoil from the northern part of the tailings recorded a silica dust concentration of 39.9 ppcc. Iron was evident in the underground soil with a concentration of 8.01 ppcc, cobalt 0.005 ppcc, copper 0.051 ppcc, while sulfate was recorded as 0.41 ppcc.

This study examined an alternative technique of extracting tungsten from wolframite ore using a fusion method with ammonium phosphate salt. Current techniques use alkali salts to decompose tungsten ores and use various purification methods to produce ammonium paratungstate, which is a key intermediate precursor in the extraction of tungsten. In this study, a two-step extraction process, which involves thermal decomposition of the ore using fusion and a separation stage, is examined. The novelty of this technique is the ability to completely decompose wolframite ore and form an unstable tungsten oxide phosphate (WO2(PO3)2) compound. The instability of WO2(PO3)2 in deionized water enables selective isolation of tungsten as insoluble precipitates of WO3 and WO2. The decomposition reaction of WO2(PO3)2 is influenced by the presence of oxygen and determined to be first order under ambient conditions. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis showed above 80% of the tungsten precipitated compared with the amount that remained in the filtrate solution.
