In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

Namibia's newest mining enterprise, the Navachab Gold Mine, was officially opened by President Sam Nujomo during June 1990. The mine is a joint venture between Erongo Mining & Exploration Company Limited, Metal Mining Corporation of Canada, and Rand Mines Windhoek (Pty) Ltd. Erongo has a 70 per cent interest in the mine, while Metal Mining and Rand Mines hold 20 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Anglo American Corporation and its associates hold two-thirds of Erongo shares and CDM (Pty) Ltd one-third. The Mine is managed by Erongo Mining & Exploration Company. The property is located some 10 km southwest of the town of Karibib and 170 km west-northwest of the Namibian capital of Windhoek (Fig. 1), the name of the Mine being taken from the farm on which the gold deposits were discovered. Navachab is an opencast operation and was brought into production in December 1989 at a cost of around R84 milion-RS,2 million under budget. The plant is designed to treat 840 kt annually at an average gold grade of 2,6 g/t. This wil produce 1900 kg of gold per year, which at today's prices will earn Namibia more than R60 million in foreign exchange.

The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. The response was good-one of the best the SAIMM has had to its various questionnaires. 231 replies were received from 2768 members representing a response of 8,35%. For fellows and Members together, the response was 13,7%. The spread of responses based on respondents' work situation appeared to be well balanced with some bias from those in consulting organizations. Members' perceptions of their employers' positions withrespect to environmental management looked somewhat optimistic, but it is encouraging to note that they reported that more than half were developing environmental management systems. Training of varying degree was taking place at al levels in their organizations. Members saw their Institute as an important agent inlifting environmental awareness, literacy and responsibility not only through the journal and symposia, but also by liaison with government departments and educational institutions. Most respondents saw environmental legislation both from local and overseas sources as affecting their organizations, their products and services with the emphasis on corporate image, core business and sales.

This article captures the intrinsic differences of thermal coal products, their utilization and their substitution characteristics. South Africa produces approximately 245 million tonnes of coal annually. Eskom consumes 46% (approximately 112 million tonnes), 26% (approximately 65 million tonnes) is exported, and SASOL Synthetic Fuels consumes 18% (approximately 44 million tonnes) and a further 9% (approximately 22 million tonnes) is consumed by domestic users in various different industries. Marketing theory contributes significantly to understanding the importance of technical product and quality appreciation and comprehension, encompassing elements of price, distribution, and promotion. Coal product specification is determined by the inherent geology of a resource and the number of complex actions to market the product to a specific consuming market. Sampling, analyses, beneficiation application, and an array of parameters contribute to matching thermal coal products to the value-in-use it provides to the different markets and its consuming industries. Coal producer shave come under increased scrutiny since South Africa has been experiencing electricity shortages since early 2008. General misunderstandings were declared on public forums and in the media by both legislators and the South African public since a perception developed that South African coal producers are exporting coal that could be utilized by Eskom.

By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to more than 40 small, medium, and relatively large sized copper solvent extraction sites. To date, solvent extraction reagents supplied in this region have never exceeded 50% of ketoxime content. We generated laboratory extraction and strip isotherms and used these with the BASF IsocalcTM modelling software to assess the benefit of using higher ketoxime blends on the main metallurgical performance indicators such as copper recovery and net transfer. Pure ketoxime extractants combine a relatively low strip point and a decent loading capacity, which are most effective as the pH of the pregnant leach solution gets closer to 2.

In 2023, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies accounted for about 62% of the global fuel cell market share and this demand is expected to grow. Commercialisation requires technologies capable of cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing. The membrane electrode assembly is crucial and represents a significant cost to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. Manufacturing the electrode components for membrane electrode assemblies at high volumes can reduce production costs while delivering on the forecasted industry demands. Roll-to-roll is a mature coating technology applied in various manufacturing industries such as batteries, printed electronics, microelectronics, photovoltaics, printing, paper consumables, etc., with significant potential for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell manufacturing. While the high-volume production process for membrane electrode assembly manufacturing differs from laboratory-scale, the membrane electrode assembly structure remains unchanged. Roll-to-roll is a continuous coating process with speeds of 10 m/min being achieved. In this work, MicrogravureTM and slot-die coating methods have been adopted and have shown promising outcomes for producing gas diffusion electrodes for membrane electrode assemblies. An overview of the MicrogravureTM and slotdie coating methodologies is provided, and a discussion on preliminary results and challenges are presented. Work on MicrogravureTM gas diffusion electrode manufacturing has already achieved comparable performance with spray-coated gas diffusion electrodes. The influence of coating parameters and drying on the coated catalyst layer quality is discussed.

Mixed integer programming (MIP) has been used for optimizing production schedules of mines since the 1960s. The major problem in the long-term production scheduling for an entire orebody is that the number of integer variables needed to formulate an MIP model is too large to solve the formulation. This number may reach well over one hundred thousand. To overcome this difficulty, this paper presents two new algorithms to reduce the size of the problem. These algorithms assign an earliest and latest possible start date for each machine placement, eliminating the integer variables that correspond to machine placement before its early start date and after its late start date. A case study based on Kiruna Mine, the second largest underground mine in the world, is summarized in the paper. It shows substantial improvement in the solution time required using the new algorithms. This increased efficiency in the solution time of the MIP model allows it to be applied to Kiruna Mine, with the potential to increase substantially the net present value (NPV) of the project.

"Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

Mining is a significant economic activity in most Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, and mineral beneficiation has been identified, and controversially discussed as one of the possibilities for industrialisation. With many member countries being economically too small to muster the human and financial resources which beneficiation requires, the recently adopted Regional Mining Vision (RMV) envisages interventions at a regional level. An opportunity arose to ask industry role players to what extent the SADC appears to support regional beneficiation policy interventions undertaken by member countries, and what the challenges are in undertaking beneficiation regionally, as a complement to, or substitute for country-specific beneficiation policies. Twenty-five semistructured interviews were conducted with experts from SADC member countries during the 2019 Mining Indaba. Participants were divided on whether beneficiation should be carried out nationally or in the SADC region. While beneficiation could support value-keeping, key challenges were found to be infrastructure development (i.e. energy, water), scarce skills, access to technology and related costs, but also lack of free trade and movement. We submit that a more integrated beneficiation strategy for the SADC region, as is being developed through the RMV, would indeed be relevant in the future. "Underground coal gasification (UCG) is recognized as an efficient mining technique capable of chemically converting the coal from deep coal seams into synthesis gas. Depending on the main constituents of the synthesis gas, chemicals, electricity, or heat can be produced at the surface. This paper provides a high-level graphical method to assist practitioners in developing preliminary gasification processes and experimental programmes prior to detailed designs or field trials. The graphical method identifies theoretical limits of operation for sensible gasification within a thermally balanced region, based primarily on the basic coal chemistry. The analyses of the theoretical outputs are compared to actual field trials from sites in the USA and Australia, with very favourable results. A South African coal is studied to determine the possible synthesis gas outputs achievable using various UCG techniques: controlled retractable injection point (CRIP) and linked vertical wells (LVW). For CRIP techniques, an important result suggests that pyrolysis, and subsequent char production, are important intermediate phenomena allowing for increased thermal efficiencies of UCG. The conclusion is that South African coals need to be studied for pyrolysis-char behaviour as part of any future UCG programme. The results also suggest that UCG with CRIP would be a preferred technology choice for Bosjesspruit coal where pyrolysis dynamics are important. Lastly, the use of CO2 as oxidant in the gasification process is shown to produce syngas with significant higher heating value. Introduction and literature surveyCoal is a commonly utilized fossil fuel, providing over 40% of global electricity demand and about 90% of South Africa’s primary energy needs. However, less than 20% of the known world resources are suitable for possible extraction using conventional surface and underground mining techniques (Andrianopolous,, Korre, and Durucan, 2015). Underground coal gasification (UCG) has the potential to recover the energy stored in coal in an environmentally responsible manner by exploiting seams that are deemed unmineable by traditional methods. The UCG process, if successfully developed, can increase coal reserves substantially. For example, in the Limpopo region of South Africa alone, the estimated potential for UCG gas, based on existing geological records, is over 400 trillion cubic feet (TCF) natural gas equivalent – this is about a hundred times more gas than the existing 4-TCF Pande-Temane natural gas field reserve in Mozambique (de Pontes, Mocumbi, and Sangweni, 2014)."

"Typical operation of industrial Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) used in copper smelting results in several common phenomena such as excessive splashing, slopping, tuyere blockage, and low converter campaign life due to high tuyere line refractory erosion. These phenomena give rise to an inefficient operation from both a process and an energy perspective.This investigation presents numerical and physical models of flow patterns, mixing, solid-liquid mass transfer, and slag-matte phase distribution in a slice model of an industrial PSC. For physical simulations, a 0.2-scale cold model was developed. Water, kerosene, air, and sintered benzoic acid compacts were used to simulate matte, slag, injected gas, and solid additions into the PSC. The two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k- e (RKE) turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial computational fluid dynamics numerical code FLUENT.Both numerical and physical simulations were able to predict, in agreement, the mixing and dispersion characteristics of the system in relation to various blowing conditions employed in the investigation. Measurement of mass transfer characteristics conclusively indicated that fluid flow in the PSC is stratified. Both blowing configuration and volume of slag in the converters were found to have significant effects on mixing propagation, wave formation, and splashing.The splashing and wave motion in these converters are known to cause losses of metal/matte and potential production time due to the requirement for intermittent cleaning of the converter mouth, resulting in reduced process throughput. To prevent these losses and hence to increase process efficiency, we propose a combined blowing configuration using top lance and lateral nozzles. The numerical simulations were conducted on combined, as well as lateral, blowing conditions. In comparison, the recent results of the combined blowing concept were found to be encouraging."

"The accurate modelling of geometallurgical data can significantly improve decision-making and help optimize mining operations. This case study compares models for predicting copper recovery from three indirect test measurements that are typically available, to avoid the cost of direct measurement of recovery. Geometallurgical data from 930 drill core samples, with an average length of 19 m, from an orebody in South America have been analysed. The data includes copper recovery and the results of three other tests: Bond mill index test; resistance to abrasion and breakage index; and semi-autogenous grinding power index test. A genetic algorithm is used to impute missing data at some locations so as to make use of all 930 samples. The distribution of the variables is modelled with D-vine copula and predictions of copper recovery are compared with those from regressions fitted by ordinary least squares and generalized least squares. The D-vine copula model had the least mean absolute error. IntroductionIn this paper we compare the use of D-vine copula, generalized least squares (GLS), and ordinary least squares (OLS) for modelling geometallurgical data from an orebody in South America. The first objective is to construct models for predicting copper recovery (Rec) from the Bond mill index test (BWi); resistance to abrasion and breakage index (A*b); and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) power index test (Spi). This involves fitting a D-vine copula and regression models fitted by OLS and GLS. The second objective is to investigate the performance of the fitted models for predicting Rec (Willmott and Matsuura 2005).Traditional resource model approaches either ignore the mineral processing characteristics of extracted tonnages or treat processing as an independent component of a mining operation. The net present value (or any other objective) can be truly optimized only by considering the mining operation as an integrated system in which net value is defined as the end-product that the company sells. This approach requires the resource model to be extended to include all relevant rock properties and processing responses."

"Fatigue is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is a causal or contributing factor in many incidents and accidents. Fatigue can be caused by work- and non-work-related factors. There is a lack of information about associations between demographic and other non-work factors, and fatigue. This study aimed to assess associations between demographic, work, living, and socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle characteristics, and fatigue at a platinum smelter in South Africa. Eight interviews with management and two focus groups with production workers were conducted, and 75 questionnaires were completed by production and other workers. Both work- and non-work-related factors were considered to be causes of fatigue. These factors included overtime, shift work, high workloads, activities performed outside of work, age, race, housing tenure, diet, sleep disorders, stress, and job satisfaction. In general, higher levels of fatigue were reported by younger participants, those who rented accommodation, ate less healthily, had a sleep disorder, and those with high levels of stress and low job satisfaction. As various demographic, lifestyle, and wellness-related factors were associated with fatigue, both work and non-work contributors should be addressed in fatigue management plans. BackgroundFatigue may be defined as ‘a state of impaired mental and/or physical performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of, or a combination of, hard physical and mental work, health and psychosocial factors or inadequate restorative sleep’ (BHP Billiton, 2005). Williamson et al. (2011) define fatigue as a biological drive for recuperative rest. Sleepiness and fatigue are related, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, sleepiness, more specifically, can be defined as sleep propensity, or a person’s tendency to fall asleep (Hossain et al., 2003; Shen, Barbera, and Shapiro, 2006).Increasing levels of fatigue and sleepiness are associated with lapses in attention, errors, response slowing, fluctuations in alertness and effort, and impaired attention, working memory, long-term memory, decision-making, and creativity (Alhola and Polo-Kantola, 2007; van Dongen and Dinges, 2000). Fatigue is also associated with adverse effects on mood and impulsive behaviours (Alhola and Polo- Kantola, 2007; Minkel et al., 2011; Schwarz et al., 2013). It is a significant concern in the mining industry as it is commonly identified as a causal or contributing factor in many accidents and injuries (Schutte, 2009). Fatigue can also lead to long-term health problems, including digestive problems, heart disease, stress, and mental illness (Shaw, 2003)."

Dry air classification is a well-known technique used for decades in the cement industry to separate material in the size range of 0.01-1.0 mm. Additionally, in corresponding dry grinding circuits with effective machines such as High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), the energy consumption can be reduced compared to wet applications. These dry systems are not state of the art in minerals processing plants, but first prototypes have been installed and an increasing number of projects are starting to evaluate this option. One challenge in this field is the mineral composition of ores, which have, by far, a higher variety in density and size than those of cement. High density particles such as iron- containing ones have higher settling rates than low density silica particles of the same size. The main question to answer in this paper is how to evaluate this effect, so a quantitative method using Mineral Liberation Analyses was developed to calculate two-dimensional partition curves. Additional statistical analyses allow for isolation and quantifying the interaction of density and size, enabling engineers to consider this effect for the sizing of process plants. "After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."

"A recent amendment to Section 36(11)(e) of the Income Tax Act, 53 of 1968 (Tax Act) now extends the allowable deduction of ‘capital expenditure’ incurred by mining companies pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA). In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB 2016), the allowable deduction has been extended to include expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements as per the MPRDA. Interestingly, what necessitated the amendment was the need to recognize SLP requirements and to circumvent administrative difficulties for mining companies and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in differentiating the use of developmental infrastructure by employees or the community. The successful implementation of such a deduction hinges on a sound SLP system. However, given the challenges within the current SLP system, this amendment could be considered somewhat premature. IntroductionSection 36(11) of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 (Tax Act) enabled mining companies to deduct certain capital expenditure in lieu of its other sections. In particular, it made provision for mining companies to deduct capital expenditure incurred pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA), but excluding capital expenditure incurred in respect of infrastructure or environmental rehabilitation. As such, mining companies could only deduct such capital expenditure that related directly to their employees and not to the wider community (Clegg, 2018).In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB, 2016) (South Africa, 2016a), the recent amendment to Section 36 extends the relief provided under section 36(11)(e) to include capital expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements of the MPRDA. In other words, the capital expenditure incurred by the mining company for the benefit of the people living in mining communities. To qualify for such a deduction, the infrastructure erected or developed by the mining company should reflect what was agreed between the mining company and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) as per the SLP requirements of the MPRDA (TLAB 2016)."
