"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis report supplements a previous report on work done in this same area 4/ but covers only the period from November 1945 to November 1946. The project was established in 1943 to investigate magnetite deposits in the northwestern Adirondacks by geophysical surveying and diamond-drilling for the purpose of increasing iron production in the eastern United States.In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the primary objective of the Bureau of Mines is the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, that they may make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy. The policy of the Bureau is to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. Maps showing the detailed magnetic surveys of the deposits and anomalies discussed in this report are on open file at the offices of the Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., and at the University of the State of New York in the office of the Director of the State Science Service, Educational Building, Albany, N. Y.The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary exami¬nations, performs the actual investigations, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, Oliver C. Ralston, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests.The chemical analyses included in this report were made at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., under, the general supervision of J. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GA's) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's). GA's are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by loosely modeling the search procedures of natural genetics. FLC's are rule-based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision-making. Together, GA's and FLC's include all of the capabilities necessary to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and an adaptive element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. The control system also employs a computer simulation of the problem environment. Details of an overall adaptive control system are discussed. A specific laboratory acid-base pH system is used to demonstrate the ideas presented; all results are from the physical laboratory system and not from a computer simulation.

Ten proposed processes for the recovery of manganese from domestic resources as a high-grade oxide product are described. Nine of the processes employ sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid, or a combination of both for leaching. The tenth process utilizes sulfur dioxide to sulfatize the ore at 600° to 850°C before water leaching. In addiction to these ten complete processes, six processes from the patent literature are described. Methods for receovering MnSO4?H2O are also reviewed.

The quantitative separation of tantalum from columbium has been obtained through several liquid-liquid extraction processes. The valuable metals are separated by selective extraction from organic feed solution using a mineral acid or by selective extraction from aqueous feed solutions employing an organic solvent. The greatest degree of separation was obtained when organic ketones, particularly methyl isobutyl ketone, were used. Approximately 200 combinations of various organic solvents and mineral acids were tested as possible separation systems in which the tantalum or columbium content was extracted from organic solutions of the anhydrous pentachlorides.

Mineral resource studies by the Bureau of Mines indicate three areas within the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness have mineral resource potential. Regional studies suggest that a granitic stock on the south side of the Wilderness has high potential for a Climax-type stockwork molybdenum deposit (pl. 1, no. 8); but detailed surface investigations failed to recognize a deposit. The Elk Summit area on the north side of the Wilderness contains subeconomic resources of columbium (niobium)-bearing ilmenite in placers (p1. 1, no. 19). Subeconomic silver-copper-lead resources occur in a vein on the northeast side of the Wilderness at the Clift Mine (pl. 1, no. 2-5). The study area has no known deposits of oil and Haas, coal, geothermal resources, or other energy-related commodities.

"INTRODUCTION At various times, North Carolina has supplied small quantities of brown-iron ore to the furnace o the South. Between 1917 and 1920, the quantity reported to the Federal Geological Survey was 126,000 tons. Most of this came from Cherokee County. 3/In furtherance of the program initiated by the Bureau of Mines to develop additional reserve of iron ore during the emergency, the Cherokee County deposits were examined by an engineer 4/ of the Bureau of Mines, and work was recommended on,12 properties.The project was begun in April 1944 and continued intermittently until April 1945, when work was stopped. During this period, eight properties were explored, and an additional property was mapped.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Until recent years the term "whiting" was applied exclusively to the water-ground chalks of certain north European countries. In many industries these are still considered superior to the whiting made from domestic limestone and marble. However, the latter material has replaced much of the European whiting in the American market, largely due to improvements in grinding and classification by American manufacturers.4 To encourage the domestic industry, the Bureau of Mines in 1931 undertook a study of the preparation of whiting from American raw materials and a comparison of the finished products with European whitings.

In the spring of 1944 the Congress passed Public Law 290 (58 Stat. 190, 30 U. S. C. Sec. 321) "authorizing the construction and operation of demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, agricultural and forestry products, and other substances, in order to aid the prosecution of the war, to conserve and increase the oil resources of the Nation, and for other purposes." Section 2 reads: "In order to carry out the :purpose of this act, the Secretary of the Interior is authorized- (a) to conduct laboratory research and development work, and, with pilot plants and semi-works plants, to make careful process engineering studies, along with structural engineering studies, in order to ascertain lowest investment and operating costs necessary to determine the best demonstration plant designs and conditions of operation;

Although chromite deposits occur in California , Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming , Pennsylvania, Maryland , New Mexico , North Carolina, Alaska, and the Phillippine Islands , less than 1 percent of the ore used in the United States is obtained from these deposits . Most of the ore in peacetime has been supplied by imports from South Africa, New Caledonia, Turkey, and Cuba . The mineral chromite , the most important chromium ore , is an isometric spinel with an ideal composition of FeO Cr2O3 , but commercial chromite has the variable composition (Fe , Mg) Oʻ (Cr , Al , Fe) 203. Chromite has a black color , a specific gravity of 4.4 , and a hardness of 5.5 . In thin section the color is reddish -brown to black . Chromite occurs in dunite and pyroxenitic ultrabasic rocks , which are composed of iron- magnesium silicate minerals such as olivine , saxonite , serpentine , and enstatite . These are also the gangue minerals . Com mercial ore occurs at random in the country rock in kidney- or lens - shaped deposits , which have no apparent relationship to each other . Stringers , veins , and bands often cut the country rock without regard either to fracture or to other deposits . Some beach sands , such as those in southern Oregon, contain chromite .

Previous work done by the authors of this report indicates that hydraulically-placed backfill can be strengthened several fold by various placement methods. Sunshine mill tailings were tested by these placement methods and strength increases up to thirty times were achieved over the ordinary placement methods. A computer simulation study of the test stope in the Sunshine Mine showed that a high-modulus fill absorbs up to 27% of normal stresses versus 7% for "normal" fill while reducing maximum convergence 28% versus 8% for "normal" fill. Although high-modulus fill was not placed in the test stope during this contract, various instrumentation was purchased, designed and built to record necessary data in the stope. Stress gauges were placed in the pillars and recorded data corresponded quite closely with theoretical projections.

"INTRODUCTION Corrosion of sections of piping used in steam-heating systems is frequently regarded as unavoidable, and periodic replacement is provided. Surfaces exposed to newly condensed steam appear to be especially vulnerable to attack. As an added nuisance, solid products of the corrosion tend to accumulate, plugging return lines.The trouble is ascribed in the main to carbon dioxide and oxygen 3/ 4 / 5/ 6/ dissolved in the condensate. When oxygen is the principal factor, the corrosion usually is characterized by pitting. Carbon dioxide tend3 to cause an acidic condensate which dissolves the metal more uniformly and produces the familiar failure at threaded areas where the piping is relatively thin, and where high stress may tend to acceletate the attack. Carbon dioxide enters the system with the feedwater, generally in a combined form such as carbonates and bicarbonates. Oxygen enters both with the raw feedwater-and as air leaking into lines under partial vacuum. The larger central-heating plants have sought to reduce corrosion by eliminating these gases as much as possible. A smaller plant ordinarily lacks the equipment and technical supervision required for this purpose."

Oxidation of mixed lanthanide solutions with ozone at pH 4.5 and at ambient temperature resulted in precipitation of 98 percent of the original cerium present. Corresponding cerium purity was increased from 50 to 98 percent. A second ozone oxidation-precipitation step produced cerium of 99.9 percent purity in high yield from the 98-percent-pure material. Alternately, ozonation at pH 6.5 and 85° C differentially precipitated cerium and rare-earth elements heavier than cerium and left 89 percent of the original lanthanum in solution at a purity of 95 percent. Subsequent recovery of cerium from the heavier rare-earth elements in the precipitate was accomplished by dissolving the precipitate in dilute mineral acid and reoxidizing the cerium with ozone at pH 4.5 and at ambient temperature. The filtrate contained an enriched praseodymium-neodymium-samarium-europium mixture that is amenable to separation by ion exchange or solvent extraction.

Few efforts have been undertaken to date to assess the quality of mandated coal mine health and safety training for new miners and for experienced miners. This study was concerned with the quality and effectiveness of existing classroom health and safety training programs. The study involved field data collection through pre- and posttesting of trainees, audio-taping class sessions, and administering short feedback forms with trainers and trainees at 14 sites in West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Results indicate that goals, methods, materials, and outcomes of existing training programs vary widely among trainers and sites. The report provides less by way of solution to problems, than it highlights the breadth of issues that relate to the question of training effectiveness and quality. The report concludes that additional work by industry, labor, government, and academia is necessary in order to improve health and safety training programs. Recommended steps are: (a) to develop performance standards and measurable criteria in each of the types of mandated training, (b) to develop better training of trainers, (c) to develop expanded training support services. and (d) to undertake further research and development in health and safety training in the mining industry

The research described in this report is the first phase of a comprehensive program for the development of a characterization for the structural properties of rock masses. The mathematical expression of the characterization is especial' tailored for use in conjunction with modern structural analysis procedures. The objective of the first phase of the project is to determine the feasibility of representing the structural properties of rock masses in terms of the analysis of an appropriate "representative volume" the results of this investigation are described in detail in the body of the report. The current state-of-the-art concerning the understanding and description of the fundamental mechanisms of rock behavior are determined from a survey of existing literature. The development of a representative volume that captures the most important of these mechanisms is described, In order not to unduly obscure the fundamental aspects of this development, the mathematical analysis of the representative volume is limited to plane strain conditions. A subroutine for the numerical evaluation of the proposed model (i.e., the analysis of the representative volume) is presented. The steps necessary for the incorporation of the subroutine directly into existing two-dimensional finite element structural analysis programs are described. Comparisons between the predictions of the proposed characterization and published results of simple laboratory tests are presented and discussed. Finally recommendations are given concerning suggested improvements of the model and the extension of it to the general three-dimensional case.

Early in the nineteenth century, coal from Clearfield County entered the eastern commercial market. Ashley reports that coal was moved down the Susquehanna River by ark from Clearfield to Columbia, a distance of 260 miles, as early as 18o4. Around 1850, the famous Moshannon or Lower Freeport bed was discovered. Several years later the Moshannon Basin was developed extensively, and the coal from this area soon acquired an enviable reputation as a high-quality industrial fuel. Today much of the original Moshannon Basin coal is worked out, and the Lower Kittanning bed has replaced the Lower Freeport bed as the principal source of production in southeast Clearfield County. With depletion of the thick underground deposits, the importance 'of Clearfield County as a coal Producer would have diminished rapidly, if it had not been for strip mining the thinner beds. About 60 percent of the coal produced in the county is strip-mined, and the trend toward this mining method is expected to continue as the older underground operations are exhausted. Many strip mines are working in beds that are too thin to be recovered economically by any other method.

It discusses fundamental theory and the vital aspects to be considered in planning and designing mine electrical power systems. The report is divided into three major sections. The first presents the history of electricity in mining and the fundamentals of electrical phenomena and components. The second focuses on power-system components: motors, grounding systems, cables, and protective equipment and devices. The final section includes mine power-center equipment, switchhouses and substations, batteries, and mine maintenance.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale physical tests conducted on a steel-set arch and tri-set. The purpose of the analyses and tests was to evaluate the suitability of these structures for use in roof-fall prone areas. The arch canopy test and design procedures previously developed by the Bureau were utilized in this evaluation. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of the experimental behavior of the structures. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri-sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that these two structures may be considered for use in roof-fall prone areas and for rehabilitation work, provided the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

The purpose of this report is to document the fire experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine, NM during March 1990. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is concerned with improving and validating the predictive capability of the mine ventilation and fire simulator, MFJRE. To accomplish this, fire experiments were conducted at the Waldo Mine and temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire. These tests then provided data for verifying the heat transfer model in the MFIRE mine ventilation and fire simulator. An initial analysis of this data indicates that it will serve this purpose well. This report summarizes the data obtained during six fire tests at the Waldo Mine.

As report covers the installation and testing of a permanent seismic monitor system at the Loveridge Mine in West Virginia. The testing of the system showed several things: 1. Getting the seismic data hack to the central computer in a usable form is possible 2. It is possible to detect small explosions. 3. The use of this system as a auxiliary system to detect hammer blows from miners trapped in the area of one of the geophones is possible.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the unit cost procedure for estimating direct development costs within a cave block in an undercut block caving mine. Costs of supervision, labor, equipment, and supplies are combined to build a unit cost for each type and size of mine development opening in the block. These costs are then combined to estimate the direct cost for developing a ton of ore. Operating data from several domestic metal mines are combined with a hypothetical mining system to illustrate the costing procedure.
