In this paper, closed expressions have been obtained for the frequency spectrum of a Born-Karman square lattice in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic integrals. This work is part of continuing research by the Bureau of Mines with the thermodynamic properties of metals and minerals. Although other workers have obtained various types of approximations for the general case of the frequency spectrum of a square lattice, no one previously has obtained closed analytic expressions for this spectrum. To understand the optical and thermodynamic properties of crystals, several investigators have studied the distribution of frequencies of normal modes of vibration of the crystal lattice. Born and Karman3 laid the foundation for the theory of lattice dynamics and obtained detailed results for the case of a one-dimensional lattice. Blackman4 used numerical techniques to estimate the frequency distribution of a two-dimensional square lattice. Mbntroll5 analytically determined the frequency distribution of a square lattice for a particular value of the force constants. He also studied the more general problem and obtained some analytic approximations, using the method of moments. However, the calculations by this method were so difficult that it was not always practicable to carry them out. This work was done to provide thermodynamic, electrical, physical, and compositional data on the seeded combustion plasmas of seven coals for the design of MHD generators. The systems were assumed to be at equilibrium, and the design data were generated by solving for the composition of both gas and liquid phases with a digital computer. The coals reported in this study include a western subbituminous, a Pennsylvania anthracite, and five representative bituminous coals. The data include dewpoint temperatures of both slag and seed. A Mollier diagram for each coal is given to allow graphical generator calculations.

Expansion measurements of platinum, added as an internal standard, are used for thermal calibration of X-ray cameras and diffractometers. Accuracy of the temperatures derived by this technique depends on the precision of expansion measurements and the reliability of reference expansion data. Temperature measurements to ± 1° C. require ?d or ?a to be determined within ± 0.001 percent. Selected expansion data are concluded to be reliable to 2° C., 5° C., and 25° C., over the temperature ranges 0° C. to 700° C., 700° C. to 1,000° C., and 1,000° C. to 1,700° C., respectively. Tabular expansion values from 25° C. to 1,700° C. in 2° C. intervals were calculated from the following equation; Expansion, percent = [8.91 + 1.28 x 10-3(t-25) + 0.04 x 10-6(t-25) ] [t-25.104 ] These tabular values facilitate future corrections of published temperatures as more reliable expansion-temperature data become available.

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. The IS countries that constitute the region accounted for 26% of world crude petroleum output, 17% of world natural gas plant liquid production, and almost S% of world dry natural gas production. About 66% of total world crude petroleum reserves and 31 % of total world natural gas reserves are in the Middle East. Transportation and port facilities in the region are geared to expediting efficient and rapid shipment of these materials. U.S.-dollar-denominated export sales of these fuels, estimated at $120 billion in 1989, provide funding for further diversification of the mineral industry. This is usually through development of downstream facilities for producing energy intensive metals such as aluminum and byproducts of the fuels such as petro-chemicals and fertilizers. Earnings from the industry are also channeled by sever-al Governments in the region to mineral industry projects in Africa and elsewhere. A fairly wide range of nonfuel minerals is produced in the region. However, the variety of minerals produced, output levels, and the size of the overall nonfuel mineral economy is dominated by Iran and Turkey. Turkey, with a diverse mineral production and strategically situated between Europe and the Middle East, ranked among the top three world producers of boron, chromite, pumice, and strontium. It was also a significant world producer of magnesium com-pounds, mercury, and sodium sulfate. Iran had generally lower output owing to 9 years of neglect to the mining sector between 1979 and 1988. It was a significant producer of gypsum and fifth in world production of strontium. Despite a very small domestic mineral industry, Israel was second in world production of bro-mine and a significant producer of phosphate rock and potash. Jordan ranked fifth in world production of phosphate rock. Iraq ranked about eighth in world production of sulfur, a commodity of major importance in the metallurgical, petrochemical, and fertilizer industries.

The Farlin Creek study area encompasses 610 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Beaverhead County, Montana. A mineral survey was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey in 1984. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature and county mining records, and examined prospects or mineralized areas to determine its mineral potential. Geological Survey personnel evaluated the area by geochemical sampling and geophysical surveys. The study area is included in the Mount Baldy mining district. Nearby mineralized Quartz veins or tactite bodies apparently do not extend into or exist within the study area. No significant gold or economic detrital minerals were found in samples from streams draining the area. All of the study area is leased for oil and gas.

When the original version of this study was published in 1972 it was evident that a problem was developing on the energy scene. The ability of the United States to find the energy supplies it needed within its own boundaries--at least in the forms desired--was declining. Production of crude oil in the United States had peaked in 1970 and was declining slowly; environmental restrictions had begun to hamper the production and consumption of high sulfur coal; natural gas reserves were beginning to dwindle; and the development of nuclear power was proceeding more slowly than originally planned. Shortfalls in energy supply were being met through the importation of increasingly larger quantities of petroleum, but supplies were adequate and the price of the imports was below that of domestic production. The energy problem was more prospective than current. In October of 1973 the prospective problem became the "Energy Crisis' when the Arab petroleum exporting countries reduced crude oil production, imposed an embargo on the shipment of crude oil to the United States, and then raised the price of crude oil in a series of large steps. This crisis was a clear demonstration of the dangers of the dependence of the United States on imported petroleum, and of the Nation's vulnerability to the actions of the oil exporting countries. "INTRODUCTION In view of the large tonnage of low-grade iron ore and iron-bearing material known to exist at the western limits of the Gogebic range, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the area for the purpose of evaluating the iron-bearing formations as sources of iron for possible future utilization.After 6o years of exploration an, development on the Gogebic range, the area investigated by the Bureau represents the known western limit of direct-shipping ore mined from operations on the Gogebic range.An area about 2 miles in length between the villages of Pence and Iron Bolt in Iron County, Vic., was selected for investigation, and trenches wore excavated through the overburden and fully across the iron-bearing formation to obtain 108 bulk samples for beneficiation tests. Exhaustive tests involving gravity and flotation methods, magnetic separation, and magnetizing roasts followed by magnetic separation were conducted on the samples to determine the ammability of the individual formations and the entire iron-bearing zone to beneficiation.Empirical data on the character and mineral content of the formations arc tabulated herein, as well as the results of the beneficiation tests."

Bus drivers represent a large segment of the US transportation industry and research has shown an association between exposure to Whole Body Vibration (WBV) and the high rates of low back disorders. Impulsive WBV exposures have been recognized as a risk factor for low back injury and new guidelines exist for their measurement and assessment (ISO 2631, Part 5). Methods to accurately and better characterize the impulsiveness of WBV along with the temporal patterns of the exposures are needed. The development of a hardware and software system to measure continuous TWA and raw, impulsive WBV exposures and the design of a subsequent study are presented. Methods Using two Larson Davis HVM 100 as accelerometer amplifiers, small external batteries, and a Pocket-PC (PDA) with 1 Gb of compact flash memory, we can collect up to 16 channels of data for a full day 600 Hz. Tri-axial WBV exposures will be measured and characterized at the frame of the bus and at the driver/seat interface (seatpad accelerometer). Using a repeated measures design, 20 bus drivers will drive on selected routes which include both city streets and highways, and within and between subject components of variability and exposure determinants related to the bus, bus seat, the bus driver, and the route will be identified. Global Positioning System (GPS) data will also be collected and integrated with the WBV exposure data to facilitate the identification of the location, velocity and type of road associated with high average TWA and impulsive WBV exposures. This system may be used to develop administrative (alter speed and/or route of bus, systematically vary type of routes) and/or engineering controls (identify and trigger the need for street repair) to reduce high WBV exposures. Results Our portable Pocket-PC based data acquisition system is up and running and we can collect seven channels of WBV data (seat pan tri-axial accelerometer, bus frame tri-axial accelerometer and GPS data) continuously for a full shift. The software analysis of the data is complex but nearing completion. We have incorporated the vibration dose calculations from ISO 5321, Part 5 and have obtained a Matlab-based routine to appropriately weight the continuous signals. Discussion In summary, the measurement of WBV is complex but new technologies open avenues of collecting and assessing WBV exposures that were previously not possible. The standardization of impulsive WBV exposure assessment methods is needed to further the discipline and better enable comparisons across studies.

This is one of a series of reports covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It describes briefly most of the known tungsten deposits in Yuma, Maricopa, Pinal, and Graham Counties, Ariz. Most of those described were examined by the author. An effort was made to determine the position of the various deposits by section, township, and range and to give accurate road direction to each property from a prominent landmark. All available maps have been used in making these determinations, but in unsurveyed areas it was necessary to make approximate projections of subdivisions. The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian.

Black lung disease, or paeumocomosis, is a serious health hazard for workers working in a coal mine. Though the exact cause of black lung disease is not known, it is certain that prolonged inhalation of fine coal particles, ever present in the mines, does give rise to black lung disease. For a long time, it also has been known that limestone applied to coal dust mine surfaces tends to hold down coal dust thus preventing it from refloating in the air of the coal mines. Since the humidity in the mines may be generally high, this also might be an important factor in the particular substrate system behavior. Fine solid particles stick to other particles and surfaces very indiscriminately. The term adhesion is used for the phenomenon of attachment of particles to surfaces whereas cohesion is used for the phenomenon of attachment of particles to each other. The measurement of the force of adhesion of coal particles to coal substrates presents a great problem, especially in the case of particles in the size range of a few microns. These micron sized particles are at the limit of the resolution of the optical microscope and therefore an electron microscope has to be used for this purpose. The forces of adhesion between these particles and substrate may be very strong and can exceed the weight of the particle by four to five orders of magnitude.

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). Two channel polarity coincidence and polarity difference statistics are analyzed. The signal, common to both channels, consists of sinusoidal bursts where the exact frequency of the signal is nearly known, but other parameters such as amplitude, phase, and pulse starting time are unknown. The noise inputs are dependent, narrow band, Markov processes. It is shown that the performance depends not only on the signal uncertainties, but on the precise shape of the cross-correlation functions between the noise in-puts. By using two polairty difference statistics in addition to the polarity coincidence statistic, it is shown that the decrease in performance, as well as the cost of hard limiting due to correlated inputs, can be made small.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among operators of mobile equipment used in mining and construction. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy mobile equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of ingress/egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Five hundred and eighty six operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. Science Applications, Inc. has developed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines a rapid response radon monitor capable of accurately responding within three minutes to changing radon levels of magnitude from 100 to 10,000 pCi/1, typical of the levels in working uranium mines. The instrument weighs 17 pounds, is sized 12" x 10" x 6", and is capable of 8 hours of continuous portable operation with a self-contained, rechargeable battery power source. Residual chamber contamination from a radon level allowed to remain in the chamber for 90 minutes is about 10 percent, decaying about a factor of two in one hour. The instrument sensitivity is a nominal 0.1 cpm/(pCi/1), with a background count rate of less than 1 cpm.

The domination of Bangladesh's mineral industry by natural gas was in for some possibly significant changes. A modest flow of crude oil was struck in a gas development well in the northeastern corner of the country. This was the first commercial flow of crude oil in Bangladesh. All crude oil was being imported, which cost a significant proportion of the nation's foreign exchange earnings. The development of an oilfield producing only a few thousand barrels per day would be a welcome help to the economy. Additional exploration at a 1985 coal discovery in the northwest indicated a considerable reserve of good-quality coal at a depth suitable for mining. If the coal is mined, it would be a boon to the local economy because natural gas was not available in the area.

The European Union (EU) completed a new directive 2002/44/EC1 called the Physical Agents Directive (PAD) that establishes action and limit values for hand-arm and whole body vibrations. The directive specifies that: “…workers shall not be exposed above the exposure ‘limit value’.” 1 and “…once the exposure action values … are exceeded, the employer shall establish and implement a programme of technical and/or organisational measures intended to reduce to a minimum exposure to mechanical vibration and the attendant risks…” 1 The PAD limit value is effective for new machines starting July 6, 2007 and for used machines by at least July 6, 2010. These requirements apply to the users of machines, but machine manufacturers will be challenged to provide machines and information to help the users comply with the directive. Caterpillar manufactures machines with the goal of enabling our customers to comply with all regulations dealing with health and safety. Caterpillar designs all of our machines to provide a safe, comfortable and productive work environment. This study was to determine if seat suspensions could provide a reduction in the vibration environment experienced by operators of Caterpillar mid sized (<50,000KG) Track Type Tractors Methods Seat manufacturers were asked to provide seat suspensions that provide improved isolation over and above current seat suspension. Each supplier was provided with ride profiles and was asked to demonstrate the vibration reduction on a shaker table. Two suppliers provided suspensions that were compared with the current seat suspension in a field study. Three full factorial experiments were conducted. The first experiment was to evaluate overall suspension performance for four operations. The second experiment was to determine the benefit of the adjustable vertical damper at three different levels and the third experiment was to determine the effect of the fore/aft and side/side isolators. Six operators were used for the study. Acceleration was measured at the seat base and at the operator seat pad. Both the transfer function and the ISO 2631 RMS ride values were used to determine the seat suspension’s effectiveness of isolating the operator from vibration. A structured questionnaire was used to determine the operators’ subjective assessment of the seat suspensions. Results There was significant operator-to-operator variability in the vertical direction (>35%), however there was little variability in the fore/aft and side/side direction based on seat base

This report is a self-contained User Manual for a computer program called SPASID -- Subsidence Prediction and System Identification. The program has two primary functions: (i) Precalculation of ground movements due to underground mining operations using the influence function method; (ii) Computation of influence function and site parameters from measured displacements. SPASID is written in FORTRAN and consists of four modules: (i) Preprocessor Module that prepares and maintains surface and mine data bases; (ii) Subsidence Computation Module that predicts movements of the surface; (iii) System Identification Module which is used to calculate the optimal influence function parameters, and (iv) Postprocessor Module for generating graphic displays of subsidence data. The last module is somewhat machine dependent but has internal documentation to indicate potential changes. All of the modules may be run in either batch or interactive mode. The manual does not assume previous knowledge of the influence function method or programming competence.

"Although coal-mine explosions rank third among causes of underground fatalities, they receive more wide-spread attention than any other accidents in mines because frequently many persons lose their lives in a single disaster. Each bituminous coal-mine explosion endangers the lives of approximately 100 persons--the average number employed underground in a commercial mine. A critical analysis of coal-mine explosions in a restricted district gives a cross-section of relative existing explosion hazards, of common causes of ignitions of gas and dust, and of effective prevention measures. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is collecting data on coal-mine explosions in the various States, and this circular is one of a series analyzing the causes and recommending methods for thy prevention of similar occurrences,The data on this circular are based on records of the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines. Unfortunately practically all of the early records were destroyed by fire in the State House at Charleston, W. Va.; the remaining records were made available to the authors by N. P. Rhinehart, chief of the Department of Mines, and his cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.The earliest available reference to coal in West Virginia is that made by John Peter Lally who in 1742 found ""a great plenty of coals"" near a river later called Coal River. In 1809, Nicholas Roosevelt found coal along the Ohio River and used it on the New Orleans, said to have been the first steamboat west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1810, Conrad Cotts opened a mine near Wheeling and sold coal for domestic purpose in 1812, a mine was opened on the Ohio River opposite Mason City and produced 1,200 bushels of coal that year. In 1840 the total West Virginia coal production was 298,691 tons; in 1863, the production had increased to 444,468 tons, and in 1883, to 2,335,833 tons. During this period apparently most of the coal was extracted from coal outcropping on the hillsides; little danger of gas ignition existed at that time, but explosions from blown-out shots occurred frequently. On February 22, 1383 the West Virginia legislature enacted legislation providing for a mine inspector to inspect the mines of that State, to prevent mine accidents, and to insure properly ventilated mines.In a special report to the Governor on December 31, 1884 the Inspector of Mines reported:We have 5 shafts, in 4 of which there is more or less gas; and in 1 of our drift mines there was an explosion on the 27th day of March 1880, whereby 2 men were killed and a boy badly burned.Table 1 lists 287 explosions in West Virginia coal mines. Several early explosions were listed in the annual reports of the West Virginia Department of Mines as ""blown-out shots"" or ""powder explosions"". The injuries usually were described; explosives accidents have been eliminated from these and other available data, and only those in which dust or gas were involved have been included in this paper as explosions."
