A novel instrumentation system has been developed which enables simple, quick, and accurate measurement of vehicular dynamics within low speed ranges. The system, consisting of a microwave transceiver and microprocessor data acquisition and reduction system, measures the deceleration dynamics of low-speed mining and construction equipment. It makes the basic measurement, calculates key parameters such as average deceleration, initial velocity, stopping distance, and brake system delay time, and produces autoscaled graphs of velocity, acceleration, and displacement versus time.

The objective of this study was to prioritize the potential risks nuisance and biologically active dusts and fumes present in metal and nonmetal mines. This was accomplished by ranking numerical values derived from a matrix formula calculation that took into account dose, mine population, and sampling size. Data used in these calculations were obtained from the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS). The dusts determined to have the highest risk potential were quartz respirable particulates, mine dust, cristobalite respirable particulates, welding fume components, and nuisance respirable dust. Other dusts and fumes that were not ranked in this study, due to small sampling population, but which show a potential risk, include asbestos, talc, hydrogen cyanide, organic compound dusts, arsenic, metal dusts, and metal and nonmetal fumes.

During the current business depression the Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries concerning placer mining, the prospects for men of small means to make wages by small-scale placer operations, the locations of placer deposits in the United States, methods of working placers on a small scale, and allied subjects. It has therefore seemed desirable to prepare a circular covering, in nontechnical language, the principal questions which have boon referred to the Bureau of Mines for answer. There are a number of bureau publications dealing with placer mining, most of which are now out of print, but which may be consulted in the larger libraries. Other articles on placer mining nave appeared from time to time in the technical press and several good textbooks have been written on the subject. A partial bibliography of this literature appears at the end of this paper. A recent pamphlet published by the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology to assist the prospector and inexperienced small operator has received wide and favorable attention and is recommended as a useful reference. In the present paper no attempt will be made to cover the subject of placer mining in a comprehensive manner, but discussion will be confined to elementary questions of particular interest to persons of limited experience.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated techniques and instrumentation that measure accurately the airblast overpressures from surface mine blasting. The results include equivalencies between broadband research instrumentation and commercially available impulse precision sound levels meters measuring: root-mean-square, peak, fast, slow, impulse, A and C weighting, C-weighted sound exposure level (CSEL), and "linear" (flat) response. These values were obtained from field measurements and broadband FM tape recordings of production blasts at area and contour coal mines, limestones quarries, and iron mines. Frequency response was determined for 14 commercial systems.

This study advances the use of elemental sulfur in structural materials by demonstrating its value in bonding high-strength, well-graded basalt aggregates to form sulfur-basalt concretes. Sulfur is an excellent bonding agent, and the strength of a thermoplastic sulfur-aggregate mixture depends, to a large degree, on the strength and grain-size distribution of the aggregate used. A 3-cubic-foot, electrically powered mixer with heat applied to the barrel was used to mix the sulfur and aggregate. Sulfur content of several mixtures was varied to obtain the best workability with a minimum of sulfur in excess of that necessary to fill the voids. The average grain sizes and grain-size distributions were also varied to determine their effects on strength. Unconfined compression tests of forty-five 6-by l2-inch cylinders yielded average strendths of 3,348 psi to 10,398 psi. The highest strength single cylinder was 10,717 psi. The cylinders were tested from 24 hours to 6 days after pouring; after 24 hours the rise in strength was very slight. From the results obtained it appears that sulfur can be a useful construction material. An evaluation was made of a high-vacuum application for sulfur concrete. Sulfur has a high vapor pressure at elevated temperatures, 50° to 100° C; consequently, significant losses by sublimation can be expected. At lower temperatures the losses are not significant; however, this factor will limit its use at a higher temperature.

The Bureau of Mines compared longitudinal strain energy output of a percussive drill to energy determined by measuring maximum piston velocity. Strain gages were used to determine the strain-time waveform and its amplitude at seven levels of operating pressure and eight levels of thrust. The longitudinal strain energy was found to be approximately 14 ft lb less than the maximum piston energy at comparable operating conditions.

A pilot plant for treating mine drainage by neutralization with limestone was designed, fabricated, and operated by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of (1) producing a very fine (minus 400-mesh) limestone slurry, (2) mixing the slurry with the mine water, (3) aerating the resulting mixture to remove carbon dioxide and precipitate iron, and (4) separating the solids from the liquid by sedimentation. A mine discharge of pH 2.8, containing 1,700 ppm total acidity, 36 ppm ferrous iron, and 360 ppm total iron, was treated at rates from 300 to 400 gpm. The treated water ultimately reached a pH of 7.4 and contained no detectable iron. The resulting sludge compacted to approximately one-third the volume of sludge from mine water neutralized with lime. The advantages of the limestone process, compared with the conventional lime process are as follows: Widespread distribution and lower cost of run-of-mine, indigenous limestone; simplicity of plant design; reduced hazards and plant operating and maintenance costs accruing from the use of a less reactive chemical agent; higher solids concentration of the precipitated sludge; and no deleterious effect caused by accidental overtreatment. While total process costs could not be determined, it is conservatively estimated that the cost of treating mine water by the limestone process is one-third to one-half the cost of the lime process, depending on the characteristics of the water to be treated and the availability and quality of limestone used.

Two samples of the Lower Hartshorne (Spadra) bed were collected: A sample of the raw coal with the machine cuttings excluded, and a sample of the machine cuttings exclusively. Analysis of the 5-inch by 200-mesh size fraction of the raw coal, excluding machine cuttings, showed that a product meeting minimum quality specifications could be produced by washing at 1.60 specific gravity, yielding a theoretical 93.7 percent of clean coal. A negligible amount of near-gravity material at the separation gravity indicated an easy washing problem. The sample of machine cuttings had a maximum size of 2 inches and contained about 50 percent ash. Washability tests of the 2-inch by 200-mesh size fraction indicated that a theoretical yield of 30.0 percent of specification-grade coal could be achieved by washing at 1.49 specific gravity. As the machine cuttings represent an estimated 10 percent of the total coal mined, their inclusion in the mine output would increase the theoretical net yield of salable coal by only 3.7 percent. Because the machine cuttings contained a high percentage of sink 1.80 specific-gravity material, they had neither an effect on the separating gravity required to clean the raw coal nor on the difficulty of separation. Gabbing underground versus transporting the cut-tings to the surface for disposal or washing either separately or combined with the raw coal involves a number of practical, economic; and intangible factors; hence, no specific recommendations could be made. A discussion of some of the factors involved in dealing with a similar problem is given by Gandrud and Riley.4

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have investigated seat design issues for the occupants and operators of underground mine transport vehicles relative to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shock. Considering the ergonomic and engineering improvements made to underground mine shuttle car seats, this study has focused on reducing injury risk by improving seating on transport vehicles such as scoops, mantrips, personnel carriers, and rail-mounted locomotives. Similarly, proposed seat design improvements included layering of various types of viscoelastic foam padding to isolate vehicle occupants and operators from adverse health effects of jarring/jolting exposure. This paper discusses the results obtained from laboratory vibration testing of new seat padding materials in seven configurations at the NIOSH – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) showing that careful use of configuration and materials can reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. In addition, results for four mine transport vehicles are presented from field data collection efforts at a Southwestern Pennsylvania mine showing that a NIOSH based design does reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. Finally, the authors discuss efforts to develop and field test seat padding interventions using new padding materials and configurations based on the laboratory test results [The findings and conclusions in this report are those of the author(s) and do not represent the views of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.]

In Germany the extraction of lithium and its salts has been handled mainly by units of the two major concerns - Metallgesellschaft A, G. and Deutsche Gold und Silber Scheide Anstalt, both with headquarters in Frankfurt. Zinnwaldite, which belongs to the mica group, is the major source of the lithium-containing raw material in Germany. Lepidolite and amblygonite also are used when available, but they are imported, as there are no major deposits of these two minerals in Germany.

"INTRODUCTION Of the phosphate rock deposits of the United States that are being exploited actively at present, the land-pebble area in Florida is the largest producer. In recent years the land-pebble district, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties, has produced about 80 per cent of the raw phosphate rock that has supplied the requirements of the several national industries based on this essential commodity.In the land-pebble deposits sizes finer than 16 to 22 mesh are below the commercial limit in phosphate content, and washing-plant practice has been directed to the recovery of the coarser material. Recently, more extensive control of the washery plan has resulted in the saving of additional amounts of phosphate, the loss of which had been considered unavoidable. However, strict requirements of the trade regarding the lowest acceptable grade of phosphate rock prevent the inclusion of more than a very small proportion of the low-grade phosphatic sands with the washery output of phosphate roe:. Further advances in practice resulting in larger recoveries of phosphate can only be effected by the application of processes that are based on other principles than merely a difference of particle size. Research is be conducted actively along these lines by the industry and by cooperating agencies.Flotation has been studied for several years by the International Agricultural Corporation and its allied company, the Phosphate Recovery Corporation. In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control f anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/ These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating before a dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

To allow the controlled yielding of mine walls in order to reduce rock-burst hazards and reduce maintenance caused by excessive squeezing forces. Approach Rock bolts that elongate and continue to sustain a load, have been fabricated and tested. This device is an adoption of a concept originally developed in South Africa for use where unusually adverse conditions may warrant the added cost. How It Works A coupling in the rock bolt allows controlled elongation if the load increases beyond the bolt's design strength. (The load can build up either slowly, as during heaving, or rapidly, as before a rock burst.) The elon¬gation of one or more rock bolts surrounding a mine opening, allows the rock to move from its original position to c new position in a controlled manner. This report presents the results of studies of Kennecott Copper Corporation's tailings embankment at Magna, Utah. The stability studies described were performed on only one cross section of the embankment, utilizing; data obtained from drilling, sampling, and testing, which was limited in nature. The main objective of the data collection was to provide background information to support the overall research effort. Because of this limited scope, it is not possible to evaluate the degree of safety or adequacy of the embankment or disposal system, and the information and data contained in the body of this report must be judged in that light. The first part of this report contains discussion of site geology and seismicity, pertinent information on the refuge disposal system, a discussion of the tailings materials characteristics, a summary of the engineering analyses, and A bibliography. The second tart (appendices) contains basic geologic and engineering data supporting the discussions in the first part of the report.

Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

Water pollution problems associated with surface metal/nonmetal mines throughout the United States were assessed. Three major problems were identified: acid mine drainage (AMD), toxic concentrations of heavy metals and excessive sedimentation. Several factors affect the type and amount of pollutants generated at a mine site. Among these are hydrologic regime, geology, mineralogy, topography, climate, size of the mineralized area and mining method. Nine surface mines situated in distinctly different settings were visited and their pollution problems studied. These mines were located in Morenci, Arizona; Hayden, Arizona; Sauharita, Arizona; Cobalt, Idaho; Spruce Pine, North Carolina; Iron Mountain, California; Butte, Montana; Fernwood, Idaho; and DeLamar, Idaho-Oregon. A detailed evaluation of the pollution problems at the Morenci mine indicated that a diversion system and treatment pint would be the most effective means of abatement for the existing water quality problems. Based on the study of the Morenci mine and three other porphyry copper mines with differing problems a water management plan was conceived for a new source copper mine. A companion Appendix Volume containing detailed reports on the mine site visits is on file at the US Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Federal, State, and local health services, and the mining companies, and miners? organizations, has for several years been carrying on sanitary surveys of mining districts in various states, with the purpose of collecting information on good and poor practices in mine sanitation, construction of approved wash-houses and change houses, the measures being taken to combat preventable diseases, the essential features of good houses for mining towns, and other conditions affecting the health and efficiency of miners and their families. The knowledge thus gained is disseminated for the common benefit of the mining industry. The sanitary conditions in the coal-mining districts of Alabama, as found by a recent survey made by the writer, are presented in this report. In addition to the towns on which this report is chiefly based, at least twice as many were visited where no details :were taken, but their general conditions are taken into consideration in summing conditions in the coal districts.

A study of the accident statistics in the coal mining industry convinces one that an organized effort must be put forth to prevent the vast destruction of human life in this industry . The fatality rate in Pennsylvania has not improved in the past several years and during 1928 it was higher than the average for the period 1916 to 1927 , inclusive . Although the accident rate for this State is less than that of the coal mines of the United States as a whole , nevertheless the rate is unduly high ; however , there are many companies which have exceptionally good records as regards both fatal and nonfatal accidents . A study of the methods used by some of these relatively good- record companies to reduce accidents in their mines shows that they exert an organized effort to prevent accidents , and that their safety organizations usually affect every employee in and about the mine from the highest official to the check boy . The chief executive must be actively and personally interested in accident prevention if real safety results are to be obtained ; when he shows this interest it is almost invariably reflected in the officials under him and throughout the organization . Safety organizations vary in form and are readily changed or adapted to the varying conditions found in the bituminous field . The companies whose organizations were studied in preparing this report are all getting good results , and it is their opinion that the safety organizations have been a big factor in obtaining these results . At their request the identity of some of the companies whose organizations were studied has not been divulged in this paper , but this does not affect the value of the information concerning their safety organizations .
